Laurence fishbourne is only 6 years older than Cuba gooding Jr yet Larry fish played goodings father in boyz in the hood. Looked convincing too cause when I picture a put together adult Fishbourne in that movie is what a picture. Meanwhile gooding looked like his son

DogmaticPragmatism

Not a movie, but a similar father-son situation is Brian Cox and Alan Ruck on succession. Cox is only 10 years older than Ruck, but they absolutely look like a believable father son duo

TakeOffYourMask

Alan Ruck was playing a high schooler at 30.

quaxoid

29*

nancylikestoreddit

What the fuck. This broke my brain lol

Hydrokratom

They made a joke about that in the parody movie Don’t Be a Menace to South central while Drinking your Juice in the Hood The guy’s father is only a couple years older than the son

DrunkenWarriorPoet

So that’s what that joke was. I never quite understood what they were getting at when that movie came out. Makes sense now.

whackadoo47

Furious is such a mf Dad character that this is easy to overlook

denny__

Laurence Fishburn is also just 9 years older than Anthony Anderson, yet I never questioned him being his father in Black-ish.

Ssutuanjoe

Sean Connery was 12 years older than Harrison Ford but they played father and son in Last Crusade. I guess even if you don't consider a 10+ year age gap "close", they certainly looked worlds apart in age haha

overtired27

I’m guessing that’s why Indy’s stubble that he often had in the first two films is gone in Last Crusade. They wanted to make him look younger and Connery older.

GreasyAndKickBoy

Also feels plausible that Sean Connery was a dad at 12

qweef_latina2021

Trebek's dad lol

SoMuchEpic95

With his MOTHER huh huh huh

TakeOffYourMask

Same age gap as Frasier and his dad.

akanefive

On a related note, Sean Connery was three years younger than Roger Moore, who replaced him as James Bond in the early 70s, but you wouldn't know it based on Connery in 1971's Diamonds Are Forever and Moore in 1973's Live and Let Die. (Of course, Moore looked to be about 20 years too old for the role by the time he retired in 1985, but that's neither here nor there.)

typhonthetitan

Relatedly, in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Sean Patrick Flanery (who plays young Indiana Jones) is one year older than Lloyd Owen who plays his father.

Own-Tomatillo-8733

Mrs Robinson is only 8 yrs older than Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate. Well, the actors are

mranimal2

In defense of the movie there's a scene where Mrs. Robinson reveals she had Elaine in college so, if Elaine is about 18-20 and Benjamin is 21, she could easily be around 36-40, which is still a bigger age difference than Hoffman and Bancroft had in real life but not as big as people think

akanefive

Well, nice to know I'm now the age of Elaine's parents in The Graduate. Excuse me while I walk into the ocean.

mranimal2

People tended to look older back in the 60s if it makes you feel any better

Llamaa_del_rey

Same 😭 I’m coming with you, should we hold hands or?

hales_mcgales

The actual issue is that Hoffman was playing 22 as a 30 yo.

HueRooney

Angela Lansbury was three years older than Laurence Harvey when she played his mother in The Manchurian Candidate (1962).

Lycaeides13

I was just reading up on her. She really got the short end of the casting stick, constantly being cast as older than she was

Turakamu

Partly because she keep carrying that typewriter around with her

Mahaloth

I'm pretty sure Jessica Fletcher was killing those people.

JonathonWally

Cabbot Cave is the murder capitol of the US

violetsprouts

In Bedknobs and Broomsticks, she was 46. She seemed younger to me, but that might just be because David Tomlinson was 54 and he really seemed it.

Darmok47

For an opposite case, 29 year old Angelina Jolie played 28 year old Colin Farrell's mother in Alexander. There were a lot of problems with that movie, but the fact that they were basically the same age made their scenes very odd. Jolie's bizarre accent didn't help.

Musclebottomfan343

In that movie's defense, the movie spans like two decades and it's easier to make a younger actor look older than an older actor look younger. Looking at House of the Dragon and how hard it was for audiences to connect some of those recasts, I can sympathize with Oliver Stone keeping Jolie as Olympias for the whole movie since there are three different actors for Alexander and the 15 year gap between Connor Paulo and Jolie is much more reasonable. Plus Jolie's scenes with the Farrell have her in a silver wig and old age makeup so they certainly don't look the same age unlike some of the other examples other people have mentioned.

NuclearTurtle

When Love Actually came out Keira Knightly (18) was closer in age to the actor playing Liam Nesson's young son who's in elementary school (Thomas Brodie-Sangster, 13) than she is to her on-screen husband (Chiwetel Ejiofor, 26) or her husband's best friend that's also in love with her (Andrew Lincoln, 30). Speaking of Thomas Brodie-Sangster, he's only [a year and a half younger than his Game of Thrones costar Hafthor Bjornsson](https://i.imgur.com/YaQsnn8.jpeg), and Hafthor is 19 years *younger* than the actor who plays his younger brother on the show

chrisdrinkbeer

The lady who played Johnny Depp’s mom in Blow is 3 years younger than Depp

[deleted]

Karate Kid 3: Daniel-San was supposed to be 17 years old. Ralph Macchio was 27 years old when he played the role. Thomas Ian Griffith played a crazy Vietnam vet who was tormenting Daniel. The character is roughly 40 years old. Griffith was also 27 and is actually a few months younger than Macchio in real life.

FerNunezMendez

This one wil always blow my mind. Even in Cobra Kai, Griffith looks way older than Ralph

dmreddit0

John Rhys Davies played Ronald Lacey's father in Sword of the Valiant when Lacey was 10 years OLDER than Davies. They both crush their roles and make perfect sense if you assume that there were two casting teams that didn't communicate. Each works in a vacuum but next to each other it's hard to sell the father son dynamic.

TakeOffYourMask

Pierce’s dad on *Community* was 12 years younger.

filladellfea

Heath Ledger was only 4 years older than Kate Mara when Brokeback Mountain was filmed, but he played her dad. To be honest, this is probably a bad example because he didn't really look that much older than her in the later scenes when her character was an adult.

ScantmanSpecial

In "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," Sean Connery played Harrison Ford's father even though he’s only 12 years older (Connery was 58 and Ford was 46).

plinkett-wisdom

George Clooney (61) Brad Pitt (59)

i_nobes_what_i_nobes

120% handsome.

thedeepfield79

Estelle Getty was the same age as Bea Arthur on Golden Girls. They played mother and daughter Sophia and Dorothy

GoodwitchofthePNW

I came here to make sure someone said this!

wholewheatscythe

First thing that came to my mind as well.

DvdB868686

The Irishman. Frank Sheeran was born in 1920 Bufalino was born in 1903 Hoffa was born in 1913 Angelo Bruno was from 1910 Anthony Provenzano was from 1917 Felix “Skinny Razor” DiTullio was born in 1907 De Niro is from 1943 Joe Pesci is from 1943 Al Pacino is from 1940 Harvey Keitel is from 1939 Stephen Graham is from 1979 Bobby Cannavale is from 1970 So Keitel is 31 year older than Cannavale while his character is 3 years younger. And thats just them. Edit: typo

Turakamu

Harvey Keitel has always looked like an old man too. He just has that big pumpkin so I guess it is the sun damage or something

Quintonjamin

31 years between Keitel and Cannavale

DvdB868686

You are right. A typo.

TakeOffYourMask

Mila Kunis looked the exact same at 35 as she did at 15.

redhotbos

Glenn Close played the mother of Robin Williams (Close was 4years older) in The World According to Garp and Mel Gibson (9 years difference) in Hamlet

2KYGWI

Some more examples involving Hamlet and Gertrude: * Eileen Herlie and Laurence Olivier in the Olivier-directed 1948 film; Eileen was nearly 11 years younger than Olivier * Tony Richardson's 1969 film cast Judy Parfitt as Gertrude opposite Nicol Williamson as Hamlet, despite Williamson being only a year younger (and Anthony Hopkins, who played Claudius, was a year younger than Williamson) * The BBC's 1980 adaptation saw Derek Jacobi play Hamlet with Claire Bloom as Gertrude, despite Bloom being only 7 years older than Jacobi * Bruce Ramsay's 2011 adaptation, in which he played Hamlet, saw Gillian Barber play Gertrude despite being only 8 years older than Ramsay

Chen_Geller

An extreme example is Lee Pace being very convincing as Orlando Bloom's father in The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies: Bloom is four years Pace's senior.

DJZbad93

I mean using immortal characters is kinda cheating

Turakamu

That and citing the hobbit movies is a sin of it's own

megmatthews20

Two years, but yes. Also, I was tickled pink at that casting!

Spire

When production began on *Forrest Gump*, Tom Hanks was 37 and Sally Field was 46.

mranimal2

Didn't they have, like, 2 scenes together? And she actually spent most of her screen time with the little boy playing Young Forrest?

rpgguy_1o1

Yeah, they aged her up quite a bit for her scenes with Hanks too

mranimal2

Honestly, while I do think ageism is a huge problem in Hollywood, and that many times studios unfairly cast women in roles they are too young for rather than finding age appropriate actresses, I wish people would stop using movies that have a passage of time as its main plot as examples of that Like of course they're going to put someone under heavy makeup to show their character has aged about 10-20 years rather than cast another actor and, ergo, of course that means the main character's parents will be played by people around the same age as them, both man or woman

i_nobes_what_i_nobes

The only movie that I have ever seen, where the young and old versions of the main character played by different actresses, that was spot fucking on was Geena Davis and Lynn Cartwright in A League of Their Own.

knightm7R

I…think I thought that was Geena Davis.

nancylikestoreddit

Sally Field has unfortunately always looked older. Hollywood ages women faster than anything. Margot Robbie looked old as shit in the Wolf of Walstreet and I think she was like 22 in that film.

Apeateite

Yeah but she looks incredible for a 76 year old right now.

Vioralarama

Lol, what? Sally Field started as a teen star as Gidget. Her career has actually coincided with her ages. (One of the few, for sure.) She's in her 70s now and still getting roles.

funsizedaisy

> Margot Robbie looked old as shit in the Wolf of Walstreet how does she look old as shit? i'd guess her no older than late 20s in that movie. she has zero signs of aging in that film...

knightm7R

Their coupling in Punchline always feels weird.

Forsaken_Republic_98

In the movie "Earthquake" Lorne Greene played Ava Gardner's dad. He was only 7 years older but Ava's heavy drinking aged her face so that she appeared older than her 49 years. They were better suited as a married couple. It was weird to see her refer to Lorne as "daddy"

not_thrilled

It's not exactly what you're asking, but in Lethal Weapon 2, Roger Murtaugh turned 50 but looked older. In reality, Danny Glover turned 43 the year it was released. I never watched the Fox TV series, but the actors playing Riggs and Murtaugh both looked younger than the movie counterparts, while Damon Wayans (Murtaugh) was 56 when the series started (vs 41 for Danny Glover) and Clayne Crawford (Riggs) was 38 (vs 31 for Mel Gibson). Speaking of Mel Gibson, he was 31 in the first film and looked older; I'm not sure how old Riggs was supposed to be, but he was special ops in Vietnam. In reality, Gibson was anywhere from 7 to 17 during the US's official involvement in the war.

boblywobly11

In all fairness glover kept saying he was getting too old for this shit.

forever_wow

Murtaugh turns 50 in the first Lethal Weapon.

Harold3456

In Community, Britta (Gillian Jacobs) is around 26 in the first season while Annie (Alison Brie) is 18. They even looked it, with Jacobs nailing it as this world weary young adult returning to community college while Alison Brie was convincing as this baby-faced innocent schoolgirl. IRL they’re only a couple months apart in age, with Brie (I think) being slightly older by a couple months.

willbeach8890

Desmond Harrington and Aimee Garcia in Dexter I was surprised to find out their ages were so close

byneothername

Amy Poehler plays Rachel McAdams’ mom in Mean Girls but she’s only about seven years older than her in real life. That being said, Poehler’s character is clearly a very plasticky trophy wife so it totally worked in the movie.

TeaCakeMaxUK

Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and George Clooney are exactly the same age.

LazyCrocheter

In Pacific Rim, the actor who played Herc Hansen was only about 13 years older than the actor who played his son, Chuck. I think in Boardwalk Empire Gretchen Mol was +/-8 years than the guy who played her son. She was supposed to have been pregnant at a young age but not that young.

Hage1in

Ethan Hawke played Alexander Skarsgards father in The Northman (although to be fair he was the father for his character as a child) but they were born only 6 years apart. If I had to guess, I would’ve thought Hawke was 50 (which he was at the time of filming) and Skarsgard was 30

haroldangel

Eliza Butterworth and Millie Brady in The Last Kingdom

Turakamu

Hang on, she is only 29?

redjedia

Christopher Plummer (RIP) was about seven years older than the actress playing his character’s mother in “Knives Out,” Katherine Callan (or K Callan, as she’s billed).

mranimal2

Can't help but give an exception to that because Plummer was 90 when that movie came out; anyone whose old enough to be his mom is dead.

Snarkybish03

I laughed unnaturally loud at that. Dang

redjedia

That is true, but his character was still lucid enough to have extensive conversations with everyone he interacted with in the movie, whereas his character’s mother is supposed to not be *nearly* that lucid, and kept to herself for much of the movie’s runtime as a result. And hey, you can certainly say that Plummer *looked* young enough to be her son.

Seamlesslytango

Famously Sally Field plays Tom Hanks mom in Forrest Gump while only being a few years apart in age.

potatotheghostmonky

Ashton Kushner and Katherine Heigl. Ashton Kushner and Reese Witherspoon. Ashton Kushner and Natalie Portman.

Ameryana

Can we PLEASE stop with these low effort posts? Flicks used to be a place in which higher quality subjects used to be debated, not this kind of gossip level questions. This adds nothing to movies at all. There's no debate, no inside knowledge, it's just hey let's compare how person x looks compared to person x. It's such a lazy subject. And yes, I know I'll be downvoted with this and I don't care. This subs quality has been plumetting and it's awful to see.

StrengthConfident

Bollywood where Superstars Playing a college student at the age of 40 and 30 years old actress playing the role of his mother: LOL

[deleted]

In Mean Girls, Tina Fey plays a teacher and Rachel McAdams played a high schooler. In real life, Tina Fey was 34 at the time and McAdams was 26.

mranimal2

Ehh the age of a usual High School Graduate is 17-18 and high school teachers in their mid-20s do exist so it's possible Fey's character is 8 years older than the main characters I don't remember them ever specifying her age
