similar advice as the other commenter: try not to think sleeping bag. i went camping two years ago in central florida in late june… possibly the hottest experience of my life. we used cots and sleeping bags, but honestly i wish i had brought a light blanket instead since that’s practically what the sleeping bag turned into. i’m no camping expert by any means but in hotter climates like florida and surrounding areas, i would say that a sleeping bag is useless and can be replaced with a blanket and pillow. sleeping bags *do* get useful in colder places though, since there are some with insulation for keeping heat in. also, invest in a chargable fan for the hotter places. i had one on that trip i mentioned—it made the time far more tolerable than it wouldve been without it.

\+1 for the fan! The air can get very still.

Yep, as someone who mostly camps in Florida there's maybe 2 months out of the year you actually need a sleeping bag. I always bring one for myself and it usually turns into extra padding between me and the ground. Usually bring and old sheet or thin blanket to use as a covering while sleeping. And battery powered fans are wonderful, both for moving air and for being a white noise machine to drown out other campers' noises

You will not need a sleeping bag in Florida maybe a hammock

Get those little fans that hold a long charge and have them circulate some air too. We use them for hurricanes too.

Big_Foots_Foot

Car camping, as in pull up to the campsite in your car and sleep at the site?

No-Cantaloupe-4435

Yes! Sleeping in a tent at the campsite. Maybe one day I'll go backpacking, but realistically that's not going to be happening anytime soon.

Big_Foots_Foot

Don't worry about sleeping bag or camping specific pillow for car camping, your home pillow and the absolute thinnest sheet you can find is perfect! Spend your money on an air or foam mattress, your body and bones will thank you in the morning, go thick if car camping since your car trunk is doing the hauling. Our summer heat is too much to sleep comfortably wrapped up in a sleeping bag in my opinion, I've been a camper since the 80's and prefer hammocks or thin sheets in the summer.

Sad-Attempt4920

Yeah dude if you're camping in Florida in the summer. You're going to sweat. No avoiding it unless you're bringing a one of those portable camping A/C, but that's hardly camping.

trtsmb

Night time lows are like 75 in the summer.

Privy_the_thought

Don't get a sleeping bag at all! Instead grab a travel sheet. You can get a silk one that keeps relatively cool. It also helps to get a sleeping pad that breathes well or just a cot. I use a thermarest xtherm and despite it's crazy high r value it doesn't sweat at all. As others have said a fan helps but what I've done to keep cool is to actually sleep in damp fishing shirts. I will run one under the water and wring out all of the water. It wicks off throughout the night to keep cool. I haven't perfected this technique yet but I think sleeping in a hammock might be the trick.

mauvelion

Everyone else covered the sleeping bag part, but if you're serious about camping here in the summer, bring along powder. The stickiness inside a tent just feels dirty and uncomfortable, and I find I sleep much better camping if my skin isn't sticking to anything

23skidoobbq

You don’t need a sleeping bag unless it’s less than 60 degrees.

ikonoclasm

Tents aren't great for Florida calling. You'd be much better off sleeping in a hammock between two trees with a rope strung up above you and a tarp tented over the rope to keep dew off. Otherwise, you'll wake up soaking wet. Expect mosquitos, as well, so lots of insect repellent.

Thanks!

DynaJim06

Another thing to be concerned with is having a decent tent if your going that route. The humidity and still air will generate more condensation than you’d likely anticipate. Summer is just a pesky puddle in the tent but winter can cause problems as being wet and cold is far worse than just cold. I’ve got a battery powered fan/light combo that hangs from the top of my tent that prevents this and really helps with heat management like an attic fan.
