One time an assaultron was crawling for her life and I got cocky and just stared watching it because I also had never seen a robot crawling around lol. Forgot she could still shoot out her laser beams of death from her face 🙃
All bipedal robots will crawl like this if you cripple the legs. If you cripple the arms, they will trigger a reactor overload and charge you, before exploding.
I once crippled the legs of an assaultron and made the mistake of thinking I was safe, so I ignored it and explored the area. Everything was going well until half an assaultron dragged its body into the room and vaporized me with the head laser.
I had an Assaultron do this for the first time just yesterday. I had a moment of pity as it crawled toward me while Dogmeat worried at it's tattered torso. It stopped when it got close, looked up in agony, turned red and self destructed. First time I had died in days.
Had that happen yesterday. It was kind of flailing for lack of a better word.
I've shot off both legs or both arms on an enemy but never all four at the same time without ending them.
Before I could do anything else Ada destroyed it. 😪

So this is actually a fairly common thing if you actually aim for limbs. If you listen to raiders or supermutants you can hear them complain about their arm / leg missing.

That came in with Automaton update, I think. Before their legs slowed them down but didn't break. Now only sentinel legs are nearly unbreakable
