The most likely thing that happened is you bought something that was more expensive than you thought and didn’t realize. It’s either that or you just misremembered how much caps you had.

That's happened to me before with treasure maps. I've not paid attention and suddenly there goes 25,000 caps. Do you have a bunch of them in you inventory? I bought thousands.

Probably bought a stack/s of plans for 250caps.
That would be my guess, especially since they said they were in a hurry to get to the event.
Possibly, who knows I bought a couple plans but only singles. Oh well. At least I don't have to worry about the cap limit for a while.
