Don't forget the banh cuon at Banh Cuon Ba Oanh. Go early as it gets busy!
It's a steamed rice roll that gets Vietnamese crowds from ALL over Sydney. There's a few other places in Marrickville that does banh cuon, but BCBO is the best.
Across Illawarra Road from BCBO is the Marrickville outlet of Lox in a Box, which is a well regarded bagel and breakfast place from Bondi.
Brooklyn Boy Bagels has its factory on Campbell Rd if you want to get the bagels directly from the source and keep them in your freezer. Absolute win.
Hellenic Bakery on the south side of Marrickville station has amazing pastries and greek treats which you can still buy by weight! Nice assortment of traditional and modern pastries for your enjoyment, great for gifts and when hosting parties.
A hidden gem is Pho Viet Xua 1919 where you can get amazing northern style pho, complete with fried long donuts to dip into the broth. Very unique if you haven't tried it before!
I think an underrated place is BBQ Prince on Marrickville Road, which does Cantonese style BBQ; char siu pork, roast pork, soy chicken and roast duck. Great little place, no frills and fantastic meat.
Don't forget about Donut Papi on the southern side of Marrickville Rd, down near Victoria Yeeros, for your donut fix.
You can also go to Paesenella next door to the Anytime Fitness for some *excellent* Italian deli selections if you fancy cooking up a storm at home. So easy to make your own tiramisu when you have all the key ingredients right on your doorstep.
Let me know if you got any other questions! I'm a Marrickville local so pretty familiar with a lot of the hits and misses.
Agree with all recommendations so far.
Re. Marrickville cafes, can't go wrong with Two Chaps, Roastville, Double Roasters, Valentina's, Matinee Coffee, Petty Cash, Koul and Ona.
If you like wine, Nick's Wine Bar is great too (renamed recently, I think... Goblin or something?)
Oriccos chicken in dulwich hill. Actually dully has a fun music scene - see butchers bar and lazy thinking for some live shows.
Can’t go past Alex and rolls for the best Bahn Mi you’ll have in Sydney.
Grumpy donuts, the general eatery at Dulwich hill, dulwich hill pork roll (better than Marrickville dont come for me), frangos petersham, lunas petersham, fich petersham, double roasters, pizza madre, babas place, all the breweries, I could go on forever!
Fellow Marrickville boy here giving you a warm welcome.
There are plenty of great places both in Marrickville and neighbouring suburbs such as Enmore, Newtown and St Peters.
Don't forget to try the breweries, there's plenty of them and half the fun is discovering them yourself.
I rarely if ever rate the food trucks at these venues but the beers are great!!
Really good for dairy free/vegan pastry options. You can definitely taste the use of coconut butter in their more delicate pastries, but I happen to love coconut so it's a win!
Pizza Madre lives up to the hype, Messina HQ for dessert afterwards, then good vibes at the Vic on the Park.
Check out Silvas and Sweet Belem nearby in Petersham for delightful Portuguese!
Pho Phd Vietnamese, amazing deep fried mushrooms
Baby Reys burgers for burgers
VN street foods for cheap and filling meals
Post Cafe and Froff and Brew are my favourite places for coffee
Gelato Franco is the best Gelato in the area without trekking down to Messina
Some of the Bahn Mi joints can be hot and miss, cant go past Marrickville pork roll for consistency
No idea how anyone that is a foodie cannot be excited about moving to the inner west especially marrickville lol but anyway
Double tap coffee in marrickville during the week for breaky or Lunch my personal favourite
Also lunas in Petersham
Peoples burger truck next to vics pub
Brickfields factory for bread
A few I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
The restaurant in the Bob Hawke Brewery - it’s called the Lucky Prawn and it is excellent. Their prawn toast is the stuff of dreams.
Banh Cuon for flat rice paper rolls just like in Vietnam.
Goodwood Bakery for amazing sourdough and croissants.
Agreed, but I can’t get past the fact that they market themselves as an all day diner and shut their kitchen at line 2:30… It’s definitely going for the up-market American diner vibe but would be nice if they could abide by their own marketing. Not everyone wants to eat lunch between 11-2:30.
There's a (comparitively) new Malaysian place that I am a HUGE fan of. Always packed with Mayalsian folks, not a huge menu - but what they do is fantastic. As is typical of a lot of marrickville - it's not a fine dining experience, but a nice down home vibe and my god, the Nasi Lemak is goooooood.
'Authentic KL flavours', 393 Illawarra road.
A little bit away from the main drag, but totes worth the 5 minute walk!
Cairo Takeaway in Enmore for fresh, top notch Egyptian falafels and sundry.
Low(ish) cost, fast, and so trendy you might walk right past it and never know it’s there unless you know it’s there - if you know what I mean!
There are so many good food options in the Inner West. I'm going to recommend Sweet Belem in Petersham for Portuguese egg tarts because I haven't seen it mentioned here yet.
Enjoy all the good food and coffee the Inner West has to offer!
Fabrika is a newbie and worth a try.
The yeeros shop is an institution, you have to go for the hand cut chips.
Goodwood bakery, amazing bread and croissants especially the ones with jalapeño and cheese!
A little bit relate-able (ex city/east), I wasn’t overly keen to move there either but these places kept me happy.
- VN Streetfoods
- Sweet Belem
- Lunas
- Cairo
- Baba’s
- Miss Sina / Nutie for cakes
- Dulwich Hill Pork Roll
- Kurumac
- the seafood joint down near the industrial bit (?) for fresh seafood.
Koshari Korner is an Egyptian hidden gem at Addison Rd Community Centre.
Gelato Franco has the best gelato - don't even bother with Messina.
Marrickville Pork Roll is an absolute OG Marrickville must-do.
Don't need to try too hard to impress with food in the inner west since it's filled with good options. One suggestion is way hard to do given so many neighbourhoods have their own feel.
If she's not averse to longer dining sessions I'd say either Lumi in Pyrmont or Sixpenny in Stanmore are very good choices. Lumi is consistently tasty and Sixpenny is impressive for anyone who is interested in the nerdy side of food culture.
No-one mentioned the Sunday markets at Addison Road! Great set of local food stalls every sunday. The first food stall you'll see is the gozleme corner, but push on and there's WAY more (and better) food there.
Last time I went, there was a place that did Malaysian style skewers with satay sauce in a bread roll and pickles; kind of like a Malaysian banh mi. Absolutely fantastic.
So the yeeros shop, best chips in Sydney, made in house from potatos like back in the day. They also do great yeeros and what not. Ice-cream shop next to victoria yeeros is pretty tasty too.
We lived in Lower North Shore, there was good surrounding suburbs like Chatswood that was pretty foodie friendly but overall we found it quite uninteresting for our tastes.
Try hitting up Burwood, too. Better than Chatswood/Chinatown. Heaps of food choices (quite foodie friendly), lively atmosphere and great prices.
Also, great coffee at Ashfield’s Normcore. Try the Magic coffee if you haven’t!
Baba’s Place, Pazar (Canterbury) these are fun fusion cuisines for date night. Also head up to the factory area around Sydenham for desserts from epicure, and pasta from the pasta factory. Bob Hawke brewery for the Lucky Pawn. Honey and Walnut for cake. Pho from many of the places on Illawarra road for I can’t be bothered to cook. Kin which is another date night fusion place.
Kurumac
Aslan in St Peters is also good
Two chaps
Azuki in Newtown
Hakiki Newtown
Huong Giang in Marrickville for Pho! Owners are super nice, we're regulars there
VN Vietnamese street food in Marrickville. I highly recommend the Bun ca (vermicelli noodles with grilled pork)
Don't forget the banh cuon at Banh Cuon Ba Oanh. Go early as it gets busy! It's a steamed rice roll that gets Vietnamese crowds from ALL over Sydney. All good stuff! Just to correct that Brooklyn Boy is on Carrington Rd
Ah yes, thanks for the correction!
VN Streetfoods is great! Bun cha is the grilled pork. Bun ca is a noodle soup with fish which is also excellent but not served at VN.
Literally about to head out to get this
Two Chaps in Marrickville. It’s all vegetarian, but super tasty and has good coffee & house made pastries too.
Their dinners are awesome, too!
I can vouch for that too. Their pastas are sooo tasty!
So good! When I went, they had two pasta courses (not sure if it's always like that), which is the way I want to live my life 😁
Agree with all recommendations so far.
Seconding Where’s Nick. Goblin is the bottle shop next door.
Bazaari - Not been there recently but my last visit was epic.
Still absolutely amazing!
Oriccos chicken in dulwich hill. Actually dully has a fun music scene - see butchers bar and lazy thinking for some live shows. Can’t go past Alex and rolls for the best Bahn Mi you’ll have in Sydney.
When I left to go travelling in January, they weren't doing banh mi anymore.
The rolls are back
Wooo good to hear!
Hello Auntie, Pepito’s, Semola, D’s, Koul Ona (coffee) Paesanella, Lamia (deli) Gelato Franco In Dulwich Hill: Tamaleria, The Larder
I second Hello Auntie. Great food, and super flexible with dietary requirements.
Grumpy donuts, the general eatery at Dulwich hill, dulwich hill pork roll (better than Marrickville dont come for me), frangos petersham, lunas petersham, fich petersham, double roasters, pizza madre, babas place, all the breweries, I could go on forever!
Second for the general eatery
Yeah Dulwich Hill Pork Roll slaps
I prefer Donut Papi over Grumpy Donuts so OP should try them both and see what they reckon!
Algorithm is new but it’s very good. Semola for Italian. Roastville do great breakfast and coffee.
Semola is a real hidden gem, such great pasta
I was so pleasantly surprised when I ate there. My diabesity wasn’t too happy about it though 😂
Marrickville Pork Roll, Donut Papi
Inner West is a great place, where on earth did your partner live before.
Pizza Madre for incredible wood fired pizza
Post Office Cafe does great all day Mediterranean/Middle Eastern style breakfast
Miss Sina café on Illawarra Rd is quite nice, the Vegemite caramel buns and croissant/cookie hybrid they have atm are delicious!
If you're in Petersham, Perama 2.0 is my choice.
Ooohhh I’ve been meaning to try it out! Any specific recommendations?
Pork baklava, slow cooked lamb . It’s all good really
The pork belly baklava and the baby octopus is amazing but it's hard to go wrong with their menu
Pho Phd Vietnamese, amazing deep fried mushrooms Baby Reys burgers for burgers VN street foods for cheap and filling meals Post Cafe and Froff and Brew are my favourite places for coffee Gelato Franco is the best Gelato in the area without trekking down to Messina Some of the Bahn Mi joints can be hot and miss, cant go past Marrickville pork roll for consistency
Pho phd fried eggplant too… fack moooiii
Pho PhD's salt and pepper vegetarian selection is top shelf. The tofu is consistently some of the best, and its gluten free for those inclined!
And don't forget that the Marrickville hotel serves food from pho PhD so you can kill two birds with one stone
Absolutely love Pho PhD!
No idea how anyone that is a foodie cannot be excited about moving to the inner west especially marrickville lol but anyway Double tap coffee in marrickville during the week for breaky or Lunch my personal favourite Also lunas in Petersham Peoples burger truck next to vics pub Brickfields factory for bread
Baba's place is amazing.
Ate there the other week. So delicious!

I haven’t tried it yet but Valentinas looks good
Agreed, but I can’t get past the fact that they market themselves as an all day diner and shut their kitchen at line 2:30… It’s definitely going for the up-market American diner vibe but would be nice if they could abide by their own marketing. Not everyone wants to eat lunch between 11-2:30.
Ahh that’s good to know, thanks. What dishes did u get btw and how was it? I want to try their tomato soup with grilled cheese
Sausage & Egg Muffin, Hotcakes, Chicken Burger - all solid.
Noi in petersham for a fancy date night.
Delish for smoothies 🤤 In marrickville or newtown
The yeeros shop is all you need
There's a (comparitively) new Malaysian place that I am a HUGE fan of. Always packed with Mayalsian folks, not a huge menu - but what they do is fantastic. Cairo takeaway at Newtown

Good shout on the seafood place. It’s called Faros.
Thats the one
The best part of eating in the inner west is discovering it.
Koshari Korner is an Egyptian hidden gem at Addison Rd Community Centre. Gelato Franco has the best gelato - don't even bother with Messina. Marrickville Pork Roll is an absolute OG Marrickville must-do.

Yes I go every Sunday :)
I really should go more often, but it's more of a treat for us. I usually end up with way to much cannoli in my stomach before waddling out.
😂
So the yeeros shop, best chips in Sydney, made in house from potatos like back in the day. They also do great yeeros and what not. Ice-cream shop next to victoria yeeros is pretty tasty too.
Out of curiosity, where did you and your partner previously live?
We lived in Lower North Shore, there was good surrounding suburbs like Chatswood that was pretty foodie friendly but overall we found it quite uninteresting for our tastes.
While chatswood is good the surrounding suburbs is trash compared to the inner west especially Marrickville
Good to hear! Super excited, the move can't come quicker. Especially with everyones great suggestions.
Try hitting up Burwood, too. Better than Chatswood/Chinatown. Heaps of food choices (quite foodie friendly), lively atmosphere and great prices. Also, great coffee at Ashfield’s Normcore. Try the Magic coffee if you haven’t!
Sixpenny.

Cow and Moon ice cream at the top of Enmore Rd is sublime
The lucky prawn and Hawkes brewery is amazing
Bloodwood never disappoints
Since when is Marrickville inner west?
