We should all remember that, while he had several standout performances, Vettel actually lost the race head-to-head matchup with Stroll over their two years. Alonso is winning 15-4. This would be an insane move

mformularacer

What exactly does Alonso performing better relative to Stroll matter here? Vettel beat Stroll 80-52 in points despite losing significantly more points & opportunities with mechanical failures, disqualifications, and COVID. He would do fine if he came back to F1. People acting like he'd perform like Sargeant lol.

_George_Costanza

Alonso is another contender for the Mercedes seat, and it helps establish just how bad Seb’s last two (really three) years in the sport were. He wouldn’t perform like Sargeant, but he’d perform like Stroll, considering he was only marginally better than that before taking a two year hiatus from racing. Is that worth a Mercedes seat?

mformularacer

Yeah. He's a 4 time world champion with bucketloads of useful experience. And he would not perform like Stroll. He'd perform better, as I just stated. Alonso is also a tough go for Mercedes considering 2007. Vettel would be a great option if Alonso doesn't take it.

GeologistNo3726

80-52 still isn’t a particularly big margin to have over Stroll, Perez beat him 177-96. When you consider that Vettel was also completely annihilated 98-33 by Leclerc and has probably only declined further with two years out, it’s hardly outlandish to think he would struggle if he returned. Obviously he wouldn’t be as bad as Sargeant, but I don’t think he would perform much better (if at all) than say Ricciardo is currently.

k2_jackal

Vettel had clearly lost some pace his final season with Ferrari and time with Aston.

Motivation and a chance of a win / podium may do wonders. The opposite is also often true, you lose motivation

mlp851

I can’t see any way that George doesn’t destroy Vettel, would be a real shame to see that.

Supahos01

Yep there's no reason to think this would go any better than daniel.

Wimpykid2302

I don't know why anyone thinks this is happening. I love the guy but he's just not what he used to be

waterstone7474

Yeah it's not happening, Vettel should have done better
