Gas prices will never be too high because we have become so car dependent/addicted it’s become an inelastic commodity. Blows my mind from a geopolitical resiliency point of view that our gov allows us to rely on a single energy source so completely that can be so drastically affected by other nations.
Maybe I'm crazy, but when petrol blasted past £1.60 a litre (still above that everywhere) I started driving even less than before. I try to walk more anyway, but when it's that much, I'm not driving until I have to. It peaked at about £1.90 or so, dropped back to about £1.75ish.
I can't be arsed converting to dollars and gallons, but it's way more expensive than even the peak of American fuel prices.
$7.35/gal, the conversion is easy with Google: [https://www.google.com/search?q=1.60+gbp%2FL+to+usd%2Fgal](https://www.google.com/search?q=1.60+gbp%2FL+to+usd%2Fgal)
This is a criticism I've heard against a carbon tax. The theory is that a tax on carbon emissions would get passed to consumers as a higher price of gasoline, and therefore people would drive less and seek out other modes of transportation. But humans aren't perfect number crunching budgeting machines, and are vulnerable to all kinds of biases and cognitive flaws. Many would simply accept the higher cost of transportation, continue driving, and budget elsewhere or go into debt. This is especially true for people in or near poverty who don't have the time or focus or ability to make wise financial decisions, and tend to think short term (like getting a cheaper gas car instead of the electric car that could save them money in the long term or continuing to heat their home with natural gas). A carbon tax is attractive because it's basically laissez-faire - the externalities are accounted for and decisions continue to be made by a self-regulating free market. But the decisions made by consumers are not necessarily efficiently self-regulating. If government is to intervene, it has to (possibly *in addition* to a carbon tax) include things like building infrastructure that encourages walking and cycling and public transportation, and PSAs to change how people view these things, and possibly restrictions on manufacturing gasoline cars or economic incentives to make electric cars (which doesn't solve the car problem, but it could help solve the carbon problem). There's an attitude in many places that if you're walking or taking a bus, you're poor. That needs to change.
I mean.... that is literally what hazard lights are for.... (assuming you mean stop not park as I've never seen some parked in the middle of the street)
I meant park. Sorry for the confusion.
Hazard lights are to signal other drivers that your vehicle is a hazard, i.e. stuck in the middle of a freeway. It is absolutely not a free pass to break traffic laws at your convenience.

I think even stopping is often legally dubious. Which is annoying as it's very hard to find a space to enter GPS coordinates and I want to do it safely so I don't want to do it while driving. I would love to just stop next to curb somewhere for 30 seconds but often there are 'No stopping' signs everywhere. Of course I saw UPS trucks parked on the bike lane on next street over so I don't think I would get a ticket if I did it.
(And yes - I would use public transport if it didn't take a few hours to get from point A to B if I can drive there in 10 minutes...)
well obviously assholes do exist I just meant I haven't seen it in person. And yes that guy even has a space he could have parallel parked into.... but my point remains that hazard lights are literally meant for stopping in middle of the street... just in actual emergencies of course
I get it if you're dropping something off and are only gonna be there for like 30 seconds, but the people who think it gives them special privileges to park anywhere for a long period of time is absurd. No Derek, you can't park your neon green Ford F-450 on the sidewalk because it couldn't fit in the parallel parking spot.
I saw this the other day too. Got close and looked inside, there was a dog inside of a crate.
Edit: It had the AC on and the window wasn't rolled all the way down.
Not really because a sting is targeted at an individual where bait cars are (usually) just left to see if someone will steal it/break into it. Doesn't always have to be a running car either - a properly parked car with a bunch of stuff visible inside can also be one for instance.
We'd get delivery trucks parking by our restaurant's back door with their engine running, the chef would always calmly go in and turn off the engine so the place wouldn't get smogged out. Respected him for that and he never got into any arguments over it.
wait, window down, engine running, unattended, no visible steering lock, parked like a jackass, wow, that car is liable to be stolen, I'd honestly guess that it is bait.
If there's something I got an enormous fear for it's the car engine running with nobody in it and the doors being closed. I always link this in my head with terrorists in movies.
I think of secret service. Since car bombs are/were often connected to the ignition they leave ‘em running constantly in front of residences their protecting
Some car batteries don’t always shut off when the ignition is off it’s really annoying, and you have to unplug the battery possible he has that issue with his car and didn’t notice, as for leaving window down when it’s hot I do that too
The engine was working pretty loud, so I’m guessing the ac was on. Otherwise, if I were to park with my windows down they’d all be down and I wouldn’t be in the handicap spot either
Idiots do this in NYC and where I live in NJ with luxury cars. Leave the FOB in too and shocked when it gets stolen.
In nyc people double park and leave the car running while in the store
Leaving the car running means "I'm not parked, just a quick stop"
People do things like stop their car right in front of the doors of a grocery store, drop someone off, and then just sit there.
"if I'm in my car, and its running, I'm not parked"
Don't get me wrong, i hate this subreddit, but when people get in their car, they turn into the most disgusting people. So i agree with this sub on that front haha
The best indicator that gas prices are still not high enough...

The convenience of having air con working out ways the cost of gas OR someone else is paying the gas.

Well said and completely agree
Car's still running with an open window... I guess you can move it for them XD
Ngl, it was tempting… soooo tempting
Move it, park it well, roll up the window leaving a small gap, pull out the key, get out, lock the car, throw the key in through the gap and leave.
free car.
Or drive away
That counts as moving it XD
Move away to sell for parts?
These types of people think because the car is still running, it's not technically "parked"
Same people who turn on hazard lights to park on the middle of the fucking street
I mean.... that is literally what hazard lights are for.... (assuming you mean stop not park as I've never seen some parked in the middle of the street)

I'm sure he means double parked.
Truck in the bike lane is generally what it is.

I think you’re on to something I’d not considered before.
I didn't consider that either - I mean what kind of fucked-up inconsiderate cu-- *(remembers America)* ...ah, nevermind.
air conditioning on full blast, I assume
Probably since their engine was working so hard
Bait car
Reminded me of gone in 60 seconds, so I decided to leave it alone
Came here to say the same thing.
Someone seems to be up for a car key safari
Leave it to reddit to find the best little sayings. hahaha i love this dude :D
I love you too, random citizen
An acquaintance of mine saw a car running with no-one in it. He hates that. So he took the keys and dropped it down the closest storm water well.
Based
Please tell me the AC is on too
They’re engine was running/revving pretty high, so I think so
Is this legal there? In Germany this is illegal, because a car has to be parked in a way that no other can abuse it.
Parking in the handicap spot should result in a fine. Idk about the rest, I never would have thought to do any of this myself.
I have heard of car idling laws in the US but I'd have to look into it
They left the window open for the baby.
they think winters are still too cold so they're doing their part to warm things up
They might not have a handicap decal, but psychological disability is very obvious given the rest of that situation.
They want you to deflate the tires.
I saw this the other day too. Got close and looked inside, there was a dog inside of a crate. Edit: It had the AC on and the window wasn't rolled all the way down.
Could have been a bait car
Oh, like the cops, doing a “sting” or whatever?
Not really because a sting is targeted at an individual where bait cars are (usually) just left to see if someone will steal it/break into it. Doesn't always have to be a running car either - a properly parked car with a bunch of stuff visible inside can also be one for instance.
Bait car
Steal it.
No way, Americans were right all along ! Cars are alive, sentient beings !
This is exactly how I picture America 🇺🇸
We'd get delivery trucks parking by our restaurant's back door with their engine running, the chef would always calmly go in and turn off the engine so the place wouldn't get smogged out. Respected him for that and he never got into any arguments over it.
I was tempted to turn it off, but being an eco-warrior doesn’t justify that action like the chef’s
Its a suburban, so oxymoronic. PS. sense made.
r/iamatotalpieceofshit is the real explanation
That’s the answer I was looking for
wait, window down, engine running, unattended, no visible steering lock, parked like a jackass, wow, that car is liable to be stolen, I'd honestly guess that it is bait.
I can't say for all US states, but in my state it is illegal to leave an unattended vehicle with the engine running.
Idlers gonna idle. It only makes sense to idlers.
Cop. Some people are saying "bait car" but it is equally likely it's just a cop going shopping.
If there's something I got an enormous fear for it's the car engine running with nobody in it and the doors being closed. I always link this in my head with terrorists in movies.
I think of secret service. Since car bombs are/were often connected to the ignition they leave ‘em running constantly in front of residences their protecting
No, no, no. You missed it. The fact they are driving this vehicle is their sign! They are handicap at making choices. Silly.
Suburbans (the actual model name of that god forsaken thing) are not only the ugliest cars, but are also driven by people with a lentil for a brain.
Some car batteries don’t always shut off when the ignition is off it’s really annoying, and you have to unplug the battery possible he has that issue with his car and didn’t notice, as for leaving window down when it’s hot I do that too

free car
We used to just get people parking on the fucking sidewalk. Guess what management did: ZIP.
That's how you get your car stolen
If it's a diesel engine then sometimes the vehicle will continue to run for a minute or so after it has been manually turned of at the ignition.
They can't afford the gas anymore and are trying to get someone to steal it
I've seen so many people lately idling their cars in the parking lot while getting groceries. I live in Florida, there is no reason for this.
"I'm only gonna be a minute" - the person without a functioning internal clock, lack of awareness, full of themselves
In my state you don't need a handicap tag or decal if the license plate # is registered with the local police dept.
Oh, that’s new to me. I’m new to GA, what state are you in?
Idiots do this in NYC and where I live in NJ with luxury cars. Leave the FOB in too and shocked when it gets stolen. In nyc people double park and leave the car running while in the store
Weak starter, battery, or other mechanical issue. Might become stranded if turned off. Placard fell from wind blowing thru window.
That’s a stretch, but I appreciate your effort to find a benevolent reason
Free car
it sounds like he really wants it stolen?
It's an abandoned stolen vehicle?
Guy need some ketchum on his seat
The engine running and window down makes it easier for you to move it
FREEDOM!!
America needs to consume all the gas they can, otherwise every military action in the Middle East since the 80’s would’ve been for nothing.
Don’t forget US interventionism in Venezuela
They're mentally handicapped.
Mentally handicapped, no doubt. Totally legit
Is it rocking? 😉
Free truck
Cool, free car!

No, I’ve seen pics showing the inefficiencies of car infrastructure
Insurance fraud
In this heat?! OMG Hurry OP! Smash the windows! That car needs to BREATHE ASAP
Free tahoe!
you cant ask them

Bait car
I would have just put it in neutral or drive and walked away
Bait car
Steal the keys and walk off.
It’s mine now
Alien abduction, spontaneous combustion? Maybe spontaneous internal combustion because guzzoline expensive.
Stolen and ditched
free truck!
