Most games? You're generally put into the role of the protagonist who drives the story of major events.
You're defeating the great evil ______
You're a soldier fighting _____ war
You're the prophesied _____ hero destined to do _____
Mass Effect sort of? Though it’s part of a cycle I suppose.
Baldur’s Gate 1,2, and 3. 1 is canonically set in motion by Bhaal’s actions during the Time of Troubles though.
Uh...no they don't
The vast majority are during the major event. That's like the whole point. Most of them had *other* major events that happened prior, but that's just how history works.
In Star Wars X-Wing you destroy the Death Star. In Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance you destroy Death Star II, so it plays next to the whole Original Trilogy.
Command & Conquer is always about its major wars.
Wing Commander I-III & Wing Commander: Privateer plays during the Human-Kilrathi War, which is a major event in its universe.
not FFXV, thats for sure.
now that i think about it: also not FFXIV since its relaunch. FFXIII i'd add too because they told the story out of chronological order for absolutely no reason other to seemingly frustrate players. XVI was fine but didnt need the random intro sequence that happens again an hour later. this series has been weird with its early game story pacing lately now that i think about it.
Halo would be it, right? Master Chief is the central character in so much of it
I kinda feel like Reach was closer to the major lore events, back when they had a lot of spartans and were in the main war on the covenant
Reach was the very start of the covenant incursion, so really from there until 3 is when the major lore events take place.
The Fall of Reach occurs 27 years into the Human-Covenant war, near the very end (which are the events the games cover).
You're thinking of Harvest, which was first contact

The *Metal Gear* series pretty much covers all the major events of its lore
I can't speak for 1&2, but Elder Scrolls Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim all take place at significant points in their lore.

Metro 2033 considering at the end of both the game and book Moscow gets nuked again in order to stop the “threat” the dark ones posed
any tomb raider game
This might be a deep cut, but Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. If you know, you know.

Pretty much every game??
nah, plenty of games are based on previous events that lead you to the current conflict.
Hollow Knight immediately comes to mind
Xenoblade 2 DLC Torna The Golden Country
Titanfall

Literally all of them. Otherwise there wouldn't be a reason for the game to happen.
Bioshock starts after the major event of that world has happened.
Same with every fallout game. Even in, say, 4 where the nukes are part of the intro sequence the game is played well after it happens.
conflicts aren't a one time thing..... most events that you play in are the result of previous conflicts
