Disco Elysium.

Only because they gutted the studio. It's a shame, I loved disco but without those same writers I simply don't want another.

Reddit is going to be pissed over BioShock 4 if that ever comes around, it’s just what happens with toxic fandoms

It was even said that Bioshock never really needed a sequel, but got one anyways.

Old game, probably older than a lot of redditors, but Lunar: The Silver Star Story. Lunar: Eternal Blue was good, but the first one was just so much better. The fully animated cut scenes were also insane for when it came out in 1996. The localization for North America was top tier, they took their time making sure that everything translated. I wish they'd make a remaster of it, but I don't think it was a big enough game in the US, since it was pre-Final Fantasy 7 (came out the following year).

Bloodborne I think a sequel could be made, or at least simply another game in that universe instead of a direct sequel, and while I do think they can greatly improve upon the base game, the experience as a whole would be hard to beat. The Last of Us Well, with hindsight and all…we should’ve known, perhaps. I would’ve also said Destiny, in some way. It, too, was shit at first but it’s the experience as a whole, by or towards the end of its service that would be difficult to beat. The game needed to be worked out/on further as well, rather than having a greedy sequel that’d do away with most of the built-up goodwill and quality.

I don't think destiny is that great of a game that people make it out to be. Overpriced dlcs and a rocky launch kind of permanently damaged its reputation. D1s crucible was fun and i enjoyed the game... Before any of the dlcs released.

Hello, good hunter. I am a Bot, here in this dream to look after you, this is a fine note: > *Ah hah hah ha! Ooh! Majestic! A hunter is a hunter, even in a dream. But, alas, not too fast! The nightmare swirls and churns unending!* - Micolash, Host of the Nightmare Farewell, good hunter. May you find your worth in the waking world.

Putting aside my personal frustration with Persona 5 Royal - easy IMO for them to do better with a follow up. I would say that it is always possible to do better because the hardware will allow developers to do more, design more. I think you also have to answer in the context of the hardware at the time. As well as where simplicity is a key part of the game. My suggestions would be: Wordle, Hollow Knight, Chrono Trigger, Tetris and Fall Out New Vegas.

Hbimajorv

Fair points, exactly what was wrong with P5r though?

Badevilbunny

So this is just my personal frustration/view, we all like different things. The voice acting is excellent, but the main character (you), never say anything! The only animation (when not battling) of your character is a miserable sulking nod of the head and a limp lowering of the hand in acknowledgement. Your character, when not Joker (which is the majority of the time) is just so lifeless. In a game about emotions, our character shows none. Too many dialogue options which have little or no impact. Way too much pointless running up and down stairs, or in and out of subways. And my big one, the first story is about a teacher physically abusing boys and grooming young girls, and yet the game itself needlessly still fetishizes girls and female characters. I really like what the game tries to do, the core mechanics, but it misses the mark for me.

Hbimajorv

All of these are valid criticisms. The yakuza series has a lot of the same flaws. I personally think it's just cultural differences and while that doesn't make it ok it does help me understand and parse out why it was written that way. It's easy to forget the game wasn't really made with a more western audience in mind.

Badevilbunny

Agree. And sadly it is also true for Yakuza series.

Manjorno316

I wouldn't say it's the same since Kiryu as a character is written to not show much emotion. That's simply who he is as a character. There are people like that in real life after all. With Joker isn't he just mute/doesn't show emotion since he's supposed to be a blank canvas for you to project yourself on? On the other parts I agree tho.

I think Tetris Effect was a very solid answer on what more Tetris could be. The gameplay is rock solid, so focus on the experience of it. On how you can feel while playing Tetris. That game had some of the most interesting ideas on what playing a game actually means. Lumines by Mizuguchi was as close an answer to Tetris as could be, so you could tell the guy had Tetris on his mind for a long time before he actually got his hands on the prize pony.

Badevilbunny

That's my point, I think you have to take into account the hardware of the time. So I am looking at Tetris purely on the Game Boy.

farbekrieg

games that have had a ton of work put into them after launch like minecraft, dorf fortress, bloodlines

Fallout New Vegas

I honestly thought the original God of War on PS2 was this game. At the time I was like yup, that was one perfect experience, and fully complete in its storytelling. They're not topping this nor should they try. Needless to say, GOW2 came and blew it out of the water. To say nothing of EVERYTHING else that came later and we know of today. So I'd say a game can always be improved upon if done right. The world is endless on its possibility. On a similar note, I'm dying to see what they're doing with Persona 6, though. I know the studio's been hard at work on a fantasy title that's taken years and years at this point so who knows when we'll see even a hint of a P6.

ballthyrm

* Journey -> It's a one of kind experience, I don't think they will ever make another one * Stardew Valley -> I don't know what they could do to make it better, it has been patched so much already. * Kerbal space program -> They are making a sequel but let's hope they get good mod support. I really, really want it to work but it will never have the wow factor of "let's make education game fun" the first one had.

BufosTaco

Hard to say as sequels are generally better in the gaming world
