Northern Vermonter here and can confirm the influx of people was crazy, also we had some big snowfall earlier so skiers were chasing the powder as well.
Drove through our town at 9:00 tonight on the border of Vermont/New Hampshire. Traffic jam all the way through on one of the smaller state roads. Just Mass plates all the way. Restaurants was putting out signs that they could not take people in without reservations.
Can confirm as well- I-75 between Ohio and Michigan was essentially a parking lot. Someone was launching and flying a drone out of their sunroof to pass the time in 3 mph traffic.
We were staying in Columbus visiting family and drove about an hour northwest to see the eclipse in totality. We experienced almost no traffic.
Left close to one in the afternoon and meandered our way to the spot we had in the middle of nowhere. We knew there would be traffic coming home so we stuck around the countryside and checked out the small towns. I kept looking at Waze/Google Maps and could see traffic building up on I-70 but it really never got too bad and by the time we got on it, we didn't hit any traffic whatsoever. Got home just before 8. I'm glad we overprepared because I'm sure there were folks getting stuck in some of the highways northwest of the city, but we really had a lovely time!
Eh, I keep checking Google maps all day. it said 3.5 hours home when I left. There was a lot of drive 20 minutes, Eta only goes down 5 minutes. it took 4.5 hours. Hubby took a different route that was listed as 4 hours. He left an hour before me, arrived literally 2 minutes after.
I was really disappointed in how inaccurate the Google maps ETAs were. Where the hold ups were was accurate. But the time to get through was significantly off and I am searching for answers to why.
Screenshot is kind of potato quality, basically every major road leading out of the path of totality and to a major city is a mess. Drive safe folks.

Omg were you also on that 4 hour bumper to bumper line?
No, I was just trying to cross US 4 from one side of the street to the other to get home and I barely could get through the bumper to bumper.
Took us one hour to get to our destination, four back
And then there’s DC and Maryland, just being shitty because that’s the way it is
Hey I’m in one of those red spots!
Wow way to dox yourself /s
Can confirm—western Kentucky was a nightmare headed back to Nashville!

I live in Montreal and it was so chaotic. Usually takes me 17-20 mins to get to work, it ended up taking me 90 mins lmao

Our 8 hour drive home took 11 so count your blessings haha
Oof sorry to hear that. Hope you still found it worthwhile!
Absolutely

Meanwhile, I-90 from Cleveland to Buffalo was totally traffic-free!
Can confirm, Toronto to niagara falls is crazy busy

That is a real r/phantomborders
It is funny how many ways we can use the internet to figure out where people are.
Took us 3 hours to drive up to watch the eclipse in Northern Vermont. The drive back home was 6.5 hours (and only 100 miles).
Evidence that dc traffic is worse than Nyc
