That's what they want you to think, but there are others. We wait on the fringes of the shield for a fleeting moment of weakness in Quebec and Ontario. Then the West and the Maritimes will strike and recreate Canada in our own image.
Then we will all turn on Alberta at the moment of victory.
But yeah, something like 60% of us live in Quebec or Ontario statistically speaking. Another quarter live in BC and Alberta. The Maritimes are another 5% or so, and there are just over a million people each in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The rest are spread throughout the north
I have on occasion worked with a woman who does trade shows across Canada, she is hilarious when she wants to be and is not focused on business. During our last show together she finally said she lives in Newfoundland and grew up there. I asked her if she normally has an accent. Well the words that came out of her mouth were pure hilarity. pr4etty sure she was doing a parody but it was still very amusing. She also knocked off a couple of other accents and they were pretty amazing. So hats off to a woman who has an ear for it and can duplicate any accent she hears.
From rapid northward expansion of mass human development...
Canada will steadily expand north in the future though, thanks to climate getting warmer on average. We can only hope that those new areas will be planned better than most of the construction going on in USA and Canada for the past several decades.
Any sane person would agree with you, but where Iām at they have been filling in the swamps and bogs for almost 20 years now for new mcmansion neighborhoods and then they all complain that it floods every time it rains.
my aunt's neighborhood in the 90s was built on a drained swamp. she had one of the first houses and we'd go catch frogs with my cousins. years later that development has been sinking and many of them have foundation and water problems
I work in code enforcement and the amount of people who call to complain about flooding after rain whose houses were built on wetlands is insane. And they get super pissed we can't do anything about it.
I absolutely agree!! I live in northern MN and they're my favorite. But that's also like 60% of the Canadian shield so if people are gonna move there, bogs are gonna go
Don't let them FL that shit up. We turned the largest continuous wetlands into canals, sugarcane, golf courses, bjillion dollar real estate and sadness..
As if we had the space required to do this or the motorization required to move vast distances
There's no way we can build efficient cities without destroying everything!!!
Itāll take 200-300 years to ābuild around themā
Construction up there isā¦ never booming lol unless itās a mine or a new road to mine, nothing gets done fast.

>Canada will steadily expand north in the future though, thanks to climate getting warmer on average.
The temps getting warmer by a few degrees doesn't change the underlying issue that there is no economic case for large scale urban development of the vast majority of the Canadian Shield.
There's a very good reason we haven't developed large cities on the Canadian shield: The Canadian shield.
There's almost no soil on top of the rock, so no arable lands. You have to blast to bury water and sewers, etc.
And the black flies.
We live in the sliver of the Shield that falls in far northern MN. I feel like Canada should just adopt us. Then I don't need to cross the border for poutine. Our climate and geography is also pretty much Canada. Also, our accents. Please take us.
From Wikipedia āA shield is a large area of exposed Precambrian crystalline igneous and high-grade metamorphic rocks that form tectonically stable areas.ā
I canāt stand these stupid ass joke comments.
More seriously I wonder if that little dip around hudson bay can be agriculturally developed as climate zones move north. Seems a huge waste for so much land to be climactically right for growth but off limits due to poor soils
You all are looking at this from the wrong angle. The Shield is not protecting Canada from anything; the Shield *is* Canada (at least some of the central portions). The real question is, what is below the Shield and aiming itself out through the gap of Hudson Bay?
I know this is a meme, but I actually thought it meant shield like the armor until right now.
It handicaps us, the land is very difficult to inhabit, and as such our population centres are split and there is little to no agriculture going on in there. If anything, it protects people outside of Canada from canadians.
I mean, a more real answer would probably be earthquakes, I think? I know we don't get many this way, and I imagine living on a giant rock probably helps
Nothing. It's a circular plateau that's called "Shield" for being circular (like a buckler). It's a natural formation and nature doesn't care about national safety.
It's actually protecting the rest of us from the Canadians
The Great lakes kind off do that. With the help of the Sheild America can still be free.
Somewhere a captain America fan just came in his pants after reading that.
Bold of you to assume I was wearing pants š„“

The great lakes and Canadian Shield collectively protect the rest of the world from Southern Ontario.

60% might be Ontario and Quebec but 1/3 of that number is JUST the Toronto area. Commenter above is totally right.
Theyāre totally right that āmostā Canadians live in the Toronto area? I think not. 1/3 of 60% is certainly not most of 100%

Is this the real answer?
Yes, thin rocky soil on a super large exposed bedrock.
From rapid northward expansion of mass human development... Canada will steadily expand north in the future though, thanks to climate getting warmer on average. We can only hope that those new areas will be planned better than most of the construction going on in USA and Canada for the past several decades.
They got a lot of bogs to drain if they're gonna make it work though
Hell no, DO NOT drain those, destroying bogs is very environmentally bad, build around them and make them protected park land
Any sane person would agree with you, but where Iām at they have been filling in the swamps and bogs for almost 20 years now for new mcmansion neighborhoods and then they all complain that it floods every time it rains.

No economic case? Our economy runs on housing now. Just build more million dollar houses to shove foreigners in.
Don't spread the truth, people will hear how much of a mess we are.

The Canadian Shield doesnāt protect Canada from anything. It protects the rest of us from Canada.
I have terrifying news for you: 90% of Canadians live within 200km of the US border.
