My dog loves pro but because digestive issues were using purina one with digestive health. She's been non runny ever since. Pro plan worked for a bit. Purina one is the one that made her tummy happy and she chomps it down.
As for puppy stage, talk to your vet but I'd still get puppy food over adult.
SAME! Purina one is the only food that agrees with my boy. I used to buy Merrick, Canidae, Orion, or whatever is āthe bestā; but it turns out that itās all too rich for him. He can digest purina one and itās a dog food that I can find at almost any grocery store.
And so much cheaper! Shows price doesn't matter. I also feed her salmon and eggs, ground turkey and occasionally steak. Since Purina one, she can have her treats and since I'm lactose intolerant, she gets occasional lactose free milk :)
We had a very similar situation with our girl back when she was about 2/3 yrs old. Her previous owners (my grandparents) had died very quickly after each other and she took it very hard. We actually had to spoon-feed her so she'd eat. If your dog's just picky maybe try mixing in some chicken hearts, stomachs or necks.
Right now my 11 week old is getting mostly Purina pro plan puppy dry food. In the mornings he gets maybe 2 tbsp plain yogurt mixed with pumpkin, followed by chicken/rice wet food mixed with pre soaked dry food. He also gets 2 scrambled eggs with shredded Colby jack at around 7:30pm.
Yes my dog eats better than I do!
Fromm large breed, green bag. Weāll mix in some chicken, pork, beef pretty regularly, sometimes eggs. Basically weāll cook a little extra at dinner. Heāll eat the kibble dry, he just takes his time eating, by far the slowest eater weāve ever had!!
You give him meat and heāll pick a piece out and run away and spit it out in the living room and give it a good sniff test to make sure you are not trying to poison him.
Weāve had good luck over the years with the Fromm and we can get it at a few places so we are going to stick with it. Weāll buy a different flavor every few bags to change it up for our pups.
Iām a professional service dog trainer who went to college for this, and I feed my GSD the Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Salmon formula. I absolutely love it for my GSD, itās a well researched and put together food that has had feeding trials done of it to confirm its healthiness for pups unlike a bunch of foods on the market. The sensitive skin and stomach part is just because GSDs notoriously have stomach issues and my pup is included in that bunch!
Great to see someone else using this. I did hours of searching to figure out what to switch our pup to and chose this one. Our vet was super happy when they asked what he was eating as well. He is spoiled though and does get mix ins of cheese, yogurt, carrots, eggs, and fresh meats.
Iām glad I found this comment and a food that wonāt break the bank. Iām picking up a bag at my tractor supply after work! $71 a bag is worth it to have her stop itching ā¹ļø
I know my GSD is also a little allergic to some plant we have growing in our yard, but we don't know which one. It's all a bunch of weeds that look like grass lol
We actually use the Taste of the Wild pacific stream. Grain free salmon recipe. Our GSD was having skin issues on regular stuff. So we tried some grain free and then salmon stuff(no chicken.) He eats about 8 cups of it a day. 4 in the am when I have my breakfast and 4 at night when we have dinner. He only eats when we eat.
I feed this to my 5 year old Bernedoodle. Just got an 8 week old GSD puppy last night and found they make this food in puppy formula. Will be using that until transitioning to the adult version. Very glad to hear the positive comments about it.
Do you still feel this way? Iāve been feeding my dog the exact same Purina Pro but Iām switching after years. They took the probiotics out for starters and my GSD is having digestion troubles with it. Thinking about switching to royal cain or hillās science.
I do still feel this way! I donāt mind having to get my probiotics somewhere else (like Purinaās FortiFlora or VisBiome probiotics). I just love Purinaās quick reactions to problems with their foods and how easily they will recall a dog even if just one or two got sick. My organization feeds ProPlan exclusively and I donāt think we will be changing any time!
We make our own food consisting of turkey, rice, cut green beans and carrots. We also add a doggy vitamin. She really enjoys it and the health benefits are numerous.
Good to know. I feel like you're on to something, and these box store foods just ain't cutting it. I want to incorporate this into his current diet, and then maybe in the future I'll create a system that is completely comprised of homemade meals.
Thanks for sharing!
Hello, We are thinking of doing something like this for our 3 GSD's Purina Pro has been giving out youngest stomach issues so were willing to try anything.
Could you give some info on how much of the mixture you feed? And how frequently? Maybe a breakdown of what each ingredient quantity is
What dog vitamin? Have you done research to conclude that there's enough of each nutritional element in this recipe? I'm curious for my own research no judgement!
Vetriscience multivitamin is what we use.
Thereās other good brands out there Iām sure.
Thereās some Good publications from universities Veternarian departments and videos explaining whatās in dog food, itās history and recommendations. We ourselves had great results from our recipe. Better coat, more energy and what not.
Beautiful pup! I wish I could give you a short, easy answer but for us it's been... Interesting
I have an 11 month old we started on royal canin large breed puppy at 8 weeks. She decided that wasnt good enough after a few months and would refuse to eat, so we added some generic wet food on top. She loved it.
A few months goes by and we ended up back where we started, she wouldn't eat it. So we switched to victor hi chew and the same generic wet food. Again, loved it, but after a few months decided nope, not eating this. So we kept the victor dry and went to blue buffalo high protein wet food and that seems to do it for her... For now. If we end up switching again we'll most likely try instinct dry and wet or some kind of raw diet. My sister feeds her dog instinct and my GSD goes NUUUUUTS for it.
I cook up a big crockpot of sweet potatoes, turkey, rice and eggs along with some beef bone broth. I put about 1 cup each into ziploc bags and freeze. When I feed her, itās a cup of Acana limited ingredient kibble (cuts down on allergies/scratching), the homemade food heated up, some frozen blueberries, her joint supplement and a little olive oil over the top. Sometimes Iāll throw a scoop of peanut butter on top if Iām really feeling crazy. This girl LOVES her food and her coat is super soft and shiny.
Then again, she eats everything from cucumbers to carrots. She loves food so š¤·š»āāļø
Victor performance dog food. Our boy had various issues with Purina Pro Plan and Royal Canin, but Victor has been the best for him, his coat, and our wallets.
Hills Science Diet dry and canned food mixed with dried brat, salmon oil, and sometimes an egg too. Sometimes ill add other things but thats been his diet since he was a pup.
i just read that yours is on hills too and just wanted to add lack of interest might be because he has access to food for too long or wants to eat something else. This was rlly hard for me but when my pup did this both my trainer and vet suggested i put his food out for 15-20 mins max and if he doesnāt eat to bring it out again at dinner time and if he doesnt eat repeat. Eventually he will eat. I didnt like doing this but it did work and obviously this doesnt apply to every situation. If your dog were to be eating abnormally and or acting different its definitely something you wouldntl want to just do that for. Likely would need a vet visit. But mine missed like 2 meals then started eating again. Mine likely lost interest because i would give him treats, pieces of chicken, etc. all day. The first time he started losing interest though i dtarted mixing in hills beef stew canned food and now he wont eat it without. Like i said context is everything though because we had a pup that almost died because she wouldnt eat when i was little and it happrned because our other dog her littermate/brother passed away. Luckily after sitting w her and feeding her by hand for like a month eventually she got a little better. She got significantly better when we got another dog tho.
My current GSD has a sensitive stomach, so I give him Blue Buffalo Sensitive Belly kibble and topper.
I mix in other good toppers, but his stomach does the best on this kibble.
Purina pro plan dry food.
As treat he would get rawhide or other treats I buy from Costco.
Very rarely my kids or my wife will give him something we eat.
He does not beg for food when we eat/cook.
He will eat only when hungry and specially after exercise even when bowl is full of food before exercise.
Main exercise = play fetch in backyard for about an hour.
Secondary exercise = walk (lately I have been lazy to wake up early morning to take him on walk and supplement it with extra time of playing fetch)
We did Science Diet puppy for the first year, he's on the Costco Salmon stuff now with his older sister.
Our boy got picky at about 8mo too, we'd mix in some boiled chicken, pumpkin, or crush up a bit of freeze dried liver on top to keep him eating. Even now at like 1.5yrs he gets in his moods where he won't like the kibble and just skip a meal then eat it right before his next.
Barf food is the best food you can give to any dog. If you find out what is good or fits to your dogs health and want be 100% sure what's in the food, then Barf is the way. That btw means to make your dog food yourself :) Mine loves it as it is attuned to her health, weight and what she likes. Sometimes it looks even more delicious than some human food xD
Diamond Naturals Large Breed Puppy. My Golden Retriever has a super sensitive belly and neither he nor my GSD really ate well on Purina Pro Plan. When a friend recommended Diamond Naturals salmon and rice it was a total hit! They LOVE it and no belly issues!
Our guy is 7 years old so weāre trying to cut back on too much fat. We mix in low-salt boxed chicken broth and cooked ground turkey with our guyās food. He tends to get upset stomach from beef and too much grain like corn. We feed him Proplan for sensitive stomachs food. We find it has less fat than even the weight loss kind of food and is mostly fish and potatoes.
Raw diet. 2 meals a day. Each meal is 1lb of ground up bone in, skin on chicken thighs, a handful of green beans and a handful of blueberries. I'll throw in an egg or some organs etc from time to time to keep it spicy but he loves it and he's very healthy.
Mostly pre made raw food(includes vitamins), chicken, turkey, pork, lamb and beef. Gets an egg each morning, with a bit of fruit(blueberries is a big fav) and goats milk on the side. Same for the 2nd feeding(no egg or milk), and I'll add in chicken hearts, sardines or an some additional protein and often mix in homemade bone broth that include celery and carrots.
My boys are on a grain free raw diet, normally consists of blueberries, plain greek yogurt, tuna oil, salmon and bone broth in the mornings. And chicken, chicken hearts and liver, chicken fat, green beans, and some more bone broth for dinner. With a snack or two in the middle :)
Bella And Duke (premade raw food, based in the UK) - I've got a 9 month old puppy, she absolutely loves it. It's expensive, Ā£5 a day, but when she's around 2, we'll switch her to a homemade raw diet, which will be a bit cheaper than premade.
My boy, now 8 years old, had problems with puppy food and at 7 months I had to find an adult food he could eat without causing diarrhea. Found out that beef was the problem. Since he still was growing and needed more protein that is in adult kibble I added cooked chicken thighs to his food. Since he had so many gastric problems he had been getting pumpkin and rice. Now he is on Nalo chicken and green pea kibble with the addition of rice, pumpkin, chicken and a vegetable mix that has carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and green peas. Our vet is happy with his weight and has not had any concerns about his heart (the rice is good for heart health and has stopped his snoring which can be a sign of heart problems).
I feed my dog Gentle Giant. It is made for big dogs, designed by nutritionists brought together by Burt Ward ( Robin on the 60s Batman TV show) he was tired of his big dogs dying young. It's available on Chewy and my 95 lb GSD Cleo loves it! I use dry, but it comes in cans as well.
My 6 yr old GSD would go through periods of the same thing. Sometimes as they get older their tastes change just like ours and sometimes they simply get bored with the same flavor.
I always mix a little canned food with her dry and change up the flavors. Keeps her happy and you don't have to go through the tummy upset and farts from changing the base food.
I give mine a bowl of decent-quality kibble and a bowl of some kind of meat each day (and scraps and treats). My current GSD gets an upset tummy if he has more than a little bone, so I limit that. Some dogs can't handle a lot of bone because of all the calcium. They're all different. The current one generally won't eat unless I'm eating. He believes the pack has to dine at the same time.
Purina Pro for our 18 month old female who is not the least bit picky.
Howeverā¦ we had a male that I believe would have starved before he ate something he disagreed with. We tried all the brands, all the flavors. He just didnāt particularly like anything.
The bizarre (and only) thing that finally worked? A recipe. Pedigree dry mixed with pedigree cannedā¦ but that wasnāt the magic. The magic was a bit of Meow Mix on top.
Yep. Vet laughed but approved, and the dog was 14 when we lost him,
Having the same issue with our 14 month old Maverick. He is on Hills prescription food because of a weak stomach, which started when he was around 3 months old. He has done much better and his vet said we could try to wean him off of prescription. We tried to slowly switch to Purina pro plan for sensitive skin and stomach. It was a good time I thought, since he seemed to be tired of Hill's (not eating all his food, turning up his nose, etc). He started getting itchy a few days after we mixed both brands so went back to his regular prescription kibble.
I've been adding shredded boiled chicken breast or crumbled freeze-dried beef liver as a topper. He'll eat his food with these toppers, but will back away when he feels he eats all the topper. By then, he's eaten half of his bowl. I'll add more topper, and he'll eat the rest of his kibble.
I also tried the Nulo toppers with his kibble, as well as mixing the wet version of his prescription food with kibble. These were both hit or miss. He seemed to like the Nulo at first, but then after a few days he was back to refusing to eat.
Yesterday, I tried just leaving his morning food for a half hour then took it away if he wasn't going to eat. For his dinner, he reluctantly ate most of his food with no intervention. So I don't know... I guess he'll eat when he's hungry.
I used purina pro plan for years until recently switching to blue Buffalo wilderness . My GSD LOVES it and has actually put on some healthy weight since he was the skinny runt of the litter. I also use raw meal toppers and salmon oil to make sure his coat stays shiny.
Been feeding Avo Derm for years. Our dog eats like crazy-she is on a diet now. As a younger dog she did lose interest. Our vet prescribed a white powder don't recall the name, vet called it 'dog cocaine'.
Mine is 8 years old, but we feed her Purina Pro Plan 7+. When she was younger we fed her one of the shreds purina pro plan. Before we got a second dog, she sometimes would not be very interested in her food and we would pour a little chicken or beef broth on top.

He gets about 20 minutes to eat. After that his bowl gets put up and he has to wait for the next feeding time. He gobbles it up. About 2 cups twice a day.
i give my pup purina pro plan large breed. she doesnāt eat it right away but she will when sheās ready. when i add a little wet dog food (also purina pro but not large breed) she gobbles it right up
Also I stopped giving her the yogurt because sheās dealing with allergies and trying to rule out her food BUT you could try adding a scoop of yogurt. My dogs love getting yogurt and dry food!
I have a white shepherd so notoriously sensitive to, well, everything. Stomach included. Been on a mix of science diet and baked chicken for about 3 years now and itās been great! Just bake 4-5 pieces, get a chicken shredder bowl from Amazon for like 15 bucks, give her science diet in the morning with a sprinkle of chicken and she eats the whole thing. She typically just needs a ākick startā to get her to eat, give it a try!

Iāve only had rescues for the last 40 years, soānot knowing the previous ownerāI had to play āguess what I previously ateā with most of them. In Lexiās case, she was given to me by the breeder who said this is what she fed all her GSDs. Because her poop was fairly hard when fed Victorās alone, I split a can of Beneful Incredibites as a mixer/topper over her two daily meals. One 40 pound bag lasts me at least 6 weeks.
All GSDs my family ever had started with raw chicken and tripe and then to either Royal Canin or Purina kibble. At 4-6 months old, they all went on a hunger strike and rather throw-up and starve than eat the kibbles. We now feed them 1.5 lbs of raw chicken/bone/organs/carrot/bok choy mix we get from our local pet raw shop that has worked with Breeders to find the perfect ratio of raw feed, 2 tbsp pumpkin, handful of tripe and a probiotic snack chew. Handful of Acana kibbles just before bed at night (the only time they're willing to take a little kibble). Little devils know when we short change them on their raw too.
Our Shepherds love "Taste of The Wild". In our area, we can only find it at Tractor Supply. It's a bit expensive, but they have had no digestive issues and seem happier/more energetic with this brand.
Origin & Acana at first. Then we switched to the Farmers Dog. We tried that for a 2 months and thought it was too expensive. Now we make his food at home from scratch using recipes from the Farmers Dog and vitamin/supplement packs they sell.
Ours is on Acana large puppy kibble. We give her 4 cups of that a day split between two meals. Each meal also has some plain rice with pumpkin and yogurt mixed in to help harden her stool.
She also gets two kongs a day. One filled with peanut butter, apple sauce, and pumpkin. The other filled with canned dog food and yogurt.
Treats are sometimes a frozen carrot, more often diced cucumber or a lettuce leaf. If we're training outside, she gets the high value treats from the store to keep her focussed
Science Diet Large Breed Adult - My GSD sometimes takes forever to eat, especially if Iām outside with him. Iāll put his food away for a bit and try again half an hour later.
He eats once a day in the evenings while we eat dinner.
Science Diet Large Breed Adult - My GSD sometimes takes forever to eat, especially if Iām outside with him. Iāll put his food away for a bit and try again half an hour later.
He eats once a day in the evenings while we eat dinner.
Our dog eats his entire days allotment of food always only at night. When he first started doing this I was so nervous until I realized thatās just what he does šš¤·š¼āāļø
PURINA HA with added meat for protein and a pancreas additive. She has allergy issues and she's done well on the HA, but needs animal protein so I give her pork or beef with each meal, and some eggs once in a while.
Our dog is allergic to chicken so we use the purina pro plan large breed. the salmon and rice mixture. And once a day Whenever possible we give him apples, bananas, cottage cheese, pumpkin or rice in a kong.
Our shepherds do the same thing. They'll absolutely love a certain brand of kibble and after a few months decide it tastes terrible. Right now they're on Purina One kibble with Lamb & Rice.
I do a mix of homemade food (beef, rice, beans, carrots and sweet potato) with Victor Active kibble and some raw. They get beef liver and chicken daily. Including kibble into the mix helps keep the cost down, but they still get all the benefits of real food.
Rice (or other vegetables) with meat or chicken liver (her blood iron levels have always been a little lower than they should). I cook for her every single day, she doesn't like dog food, not even the premium ones.
She likes to eat cat food, suplements we give to cows, *FISH FOOD* and will literally chew grass and earth and moths
I really don't understand my dog's brain, or stomach, in fact
Edit: she also hunts, so she gets to eat raw meat and sometimes she finds some already dead thing and eats it. I tried to stop her from eating a dead dove (it was rotting already) and she growled at me :/
Ty for this thread, been wondering if I should stay with Hills or switch. I wanted a more āhomemade dietā. Always thought Iād do that if I got my pupper which I finally have. saving this thread haha
My GSD has a sensitive tummy, tried a few brands when he was a puppy and got tired of the same food all of the time.
Purina pro plan worked really well for him, even the nonsensitive stomach food worked well for him. After nearly 2 years, he wasn't happy with the same food, so we just switched to Nutro Ultra a couple months ago. So far, so good. Nutro got my beagles to 14yrs, so it can't be too bad.
We have a Great Dane German Shepherd mix.
She was on Kirkland brand whatever for a while, and we added Kirkland canned food when we needed to incentivize her to eat before going to doggy daycare (so she wouldnāt starve all day long with her friends!)
Soon, that was not good enough. No mixture of kibble, canned food, freeze dried proteins, oils, toppers or any other additive would suffice. This dog throws up bile from not eating if you donāt get it right.
Now weāre doing Science Diet large breed kibble. Once a week we throw chicken or ground turkey, rice and peas and carrots into the instant pot. She gets 50/50 kibble and heated rice mixture and that MOSTLY gets her to eatā¦.she still rejects it sometimes. At least itās cheaper than the canned food we were buying!
Purina pro beef; my couch-wolf has a *very* sensitive tummy, and will explode out both ends fo hours if she so much as licks poultry or fish of any kind. Eggs are fine though.
Contrasted to my Pyr or old lady ultra-mutt, who could both eat raw sewage and rat ass and probably be fine.
10 plus years of Diamond Naturals large breed formula. Two GSD and now a Corgi mix. We tried the regular Diamond food, but the Corgi would only eat the big dog food.
As other have said, it's my arms. Otherwise we do the members mark salmon and pea from Sam's club. Ingredients rival blue Buffalo for about 75 cents less per pound.
Inukshuk performance Marine 16. It's 26% protein and 16% fat. I also add Primal Raw frozen nuggets in beef variety. It's a complete and balanced raw diet. I just thaw it with warm water. My girl is very picky and sensitive. But she eats this no problem!
We feed ours Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Lamb, the dry kibble , and some canned wet food of the same brand. We tried Purina Pro Plan sensitive stomach salmon, but it did not work for our girl. She would refuse to eat it sometimes, have very soft stools, and her stools smelled awful. When we finally found the Natural Balance brand, that all cleared up.
My girl, Tsubaki was allergic to EVERYTHING! Grass, meats, grains, trees, fruits... everything. We bought True Acre chicken and vegetables, grain free from Chewy. She ate it up until the week before she died. She was 8. I miss her. š¢

Purina Pro Plan. Compared to what other companies do, Purina really is playing 4D chess. With all the DCM scares and the suspicious claims from boutique brands, PPP is the answer for us.
I have two, 5 Yr. Old girl and a 4 years old boy. I buy 40 pounds if raw chicken quarters and 10 pounds of ground beef from a local GFS. I grind them down and give each dog a little less than a pound, that lasts about 2 weeks. I add some bone broth, vitamin pills, glucosamine and salmon oil. A little historyā¦.. I lost a 7 year old golden retriever to cancer and I believe kibble is the main cause. So Iām trying to give them the best chance at a good healthy life. Your dog looks very healthy!,
I've had 4 German Shepherds over 30 years and have fed them all raw. I've never had a sick dg and have never had to have any of their teeth professionally cleaned.
Mine are on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach Dog Food Salmon and Rice Formula - canned and dry. They also get pumpkin, Calming Care Probiotic, Fish Oil, and Glycoflex. They are 9.5 and 10 and are absolutely healthy and happy.
one of my dogs is sensitive/allergic to chicken. That narrows down my options considerably.
We have settled on Simply Nourish - Ancient Grains; either the Pork or Salmon/White fish.
Has a decent ingredient list, no chicken, and a somewhat higher calorie content, even has a decent fiber percentage. (these are all things that are required by this one dog, the other four just get what works for him)
as far as the price, it is pretty middle of the road for dog food.
(all 5 are GSDs)
I feed my 2 shepherds a raw blend diet. Its called k9 kravings located in the area I live in. Itās AAFCO regulated and USDA certified, the owner actually used to be a shepherd breeder and created this brand with sheps in mind. We also supplement them with raw goats milk every few days for healthy probiotics and occasionally fish oil for their coats (NEVER give cows milk, they have a hard time digesting lactose).
My older and larger shep would have bad GI issues on kibble, we tried purina pro plan, hills, and even prescription z/d and k/d. Once we switched to raw he started doing much better.
Warning:
Just never mix raw and kibble, they are digested differently and it may cause a stomach flip. If wanting to switch ALWAYS fast them for a day until the kibble is out of their system.
Raw food. Source our own products from butchers and the grocery store.
I donāt believe feeding your dog a 70% carb kibble everyday should be considered normal.
Too much (or even worse, ONLY) kibble is definitely not good for goods. Some con points would be stuff like:
Highly processed foods: "dead food", Frequently no sufficiently open declaration, low moisture content, High vegetable content, Contains antinutrients, Not species appropriate, Contains food mites, Usually too many different ingredients and Lower digestibility.
I've learned that stuff by a person who very much learned about dog food over several years. They did some very nice pro's and con's posts about kibble food, wet food and barf food.
Purina pro plan large breed sensitive skin and stomach. Our pups are sensitive to chicken so we have to cut it entirely out. We mix the dry with a rotating stock of different wet foods. Koha, signature , weruva, fromm and something else I cannot think of at the moment.
Ours get bored with too much repetition so we have a bunch we rotate through. Whitefish, lamb, kangaroo, beef, pulled pork, etc. They also gets eggs and peanut butter as well as fish oils.
They eat better than we do tbh lol
Each of pups(2GSDs+3 Black Labs)always start on a grain free plan. At about 9 months we have a full spectrum blood panel done for allergies and sensitives. That is a $200 bill from our local vet. Those tests have served us and the pups very well
Our puppy has been on Purina Pro for a while but at the end of winter developed some itching and scratching. The vet said that it might be some food allergy, and suggested switching. Two months on hydrolized protein food - and less itching. Might be also spring, better humidity, etc. Switched to Royal Canin after that, so far so good
Keep in mind that kibble is pretty much void of any real nutrients. It's produced by extrusion, which requires high heat, which destroys most of the nutrients that were in it before. I only give mine a little kibble, now and then and never mix the 2. My boy is 98 pounds and a small 8lb bag of kibble lasts me 2-3 months because his diet is really all raw.
My girl has been a picky eater since I got her at 8 weeks old. She also has a chicken sensitivity that leaves her super itch and losing hair at her ears. Iāve gone through pretty much all the non chicken kibble and she still wonāt eat unless I add Petfresh, sardines, and an egg.
Her 1yr old brother gets purina which she magically wants to eat now š«
Royal Canin GSD formula because it's $110 a bag so it must be good right? He loves it! But then again he also loved the last formula...and the plumerias in the backyard ... a 2x4 and bananas HE LOVES BANANAS.
Mine is fed a raw diet formulated by myself to meet NRC guidelines. He is 2 and a half and has been eating raw since he was 7 months old.
He is a very healthy, happy boy.
As a dwarf my dog is really skinny and was same when I was giving her Purina One mini only + some adds like a yogurt, chicken hearts and little bit of vegetables but now sheās with my mom for year (I moved to another country for 1 year) and she got like 3 kilograms!!! My mom feed her with meat, eggs, milky things, fish, fruits and other things. So when I will come back I think I will give her more natural food because she loves it more and it will keep her weight on the normal point
Our dog Doug has been on Royal Canin Large breed Puppy since 8 weeks. he is also given fish oil every morning and sometimes an egg He has a great coat, is super healthy so far and no issues, except that the food is $150 a bag here and he eats ALOT!
So we are slowly transitioning him to Purina Pro Pet puppy, because it comes up a lot in many different dog food reddits as highly recommended - so why not try it. Plus its only $100 a bag which is still insane and the most amount Ive ever paid for dog food out of the other 4 dogs we've had but for some reason this jerk convinced me he deserves the best.
But Ive also had dogs who lived a healthy 12 years and ate whatever grocery store food was on sale when I was younger so who knows.
Orijen. Itās pricey but sheās been doing good on it 2-3 years and normal shedding. Tried switching her back to natural balance or something slightly cheaper and sheāll sheād like crazy.
I feed mine quinoa, green beans, chicken, and some of his kibble (the Rachel Ray brand because he refused to eat any other brands). He does get table scraps time to time when heās really good lol
Last night was my left shoe, and the day before that, it was my right arm. As for actual food, it's the Purina Pro Plan.
This. š¤£

Yeah we use the beef mash and our GSD loves it!
How sad. Thanks for taking her in.
That was never the question. Going "yeah, we're taking the house, but not the dog" would have been a dick move.
Your dog eats better than I do.
Green tripe is found to be mych better than yogurt But yogurt is easier to get.
Also not as stinky lol
This is what I feed as well. My girl also has a sensitive stomach.
May have to try the sensitive skin and stomach! My GSD is so itchy and miserable right now.
Mine is itchy too! I'm going to try this. She's so picky.
We wipe her off after playing in the yard and that helps a bit.
I take mine to fetch at my parents almost daily so it could be something in the yard but she was itchy in the winter too which makes me think food.
This formula didnāt work for my pup unfortunately ): tried the lamb and salmon version. Lamb was a little better than the salmon.
Most commercial brands lack the complete nutritional needs for dogs.
Thanks!
Beautiful pup! I wish I could give you a short, easy answer but for us it's been... Interesting I have an 11 month old we started on royal canin large breed puppy at 8 weeks.
Appreciate you sharing! Sounds like this is pretty common, which is no surprise. They're such intelligent dogs and easily get bored.
I highly recommend hills if you can keep him on it. Its great food. Ive worked at several animal hospitals and all of them used hills and swore by it.
I really like Iams products, I must say though this German shepherd is the most beautiful one I've ever seen.
Awe, thanks. He's been the best dog ever. He loves to play, does well with kids, and alerts me of any nonsense.
Zignature salmon. GF
We feed ours royal canin & primal raw patties. She loves both š
Fromm large breed (green bag). Insanely good dog food.
Our vet recommended Royal Canin GSD puppy for our 7 month old and that seems to work great for her
Mostly pre made raw food(includes vitamins), chicken, turkey, pork, lamb and beef.
Currently feeding my 9month girl nutri source for large breeds. If anyone has better suggestions Iāll take them!
Yep. Vet laughed but approved, and the dog was 14 when we lost him,
Taste of the wild
Open farm. And whatever she can beg from my parents.
Been feeding Avo Derm for years. Our dog eats like crazy-she is on a diet now. As a younger dog she did lose interest. Our vet prescribed a white powder don't recall the name, vet called it 'dog cocaine'.
Mine just turned 1. He had been on Fromm Large Breed Gold since we got him and havenāt had issuesā¦.albeit every dog is going to be different
Mine is 8 years old, but we feed her Purina Pro Plan 7+. When she was younger we fed her one of the shreds purina pro plan. Before we got a second dog, she sometimes would not be very interested in her food and we would pour a little chicken or beef broth on top.
Open farm!

i give my pup purina pro plan large breed. she doesnāt eat it right away but she will when sheās ready. when i add a little wet dog food (also purina pro but not large breed) she gobbles it right up
Kirkland brand (Costco) Salmon
Also I stopped giving her the yogurt because sheās dealing with allergies and trying to rule out her food BUT you could try adding a scoop of yogurt. My dogs love getting yogurt and dry food!
I have a white shepherd so notoriously sensitive to, well, everything. Stomach included. Been on a mix of science diet and baked chicken for about 3 years now and itās been great! Just bake 4-5 pieces, get a chicken shredder bowl from Amazon for like 15 bucks, give her science diet in the morning with a sprinkle of chicken and she eats the whole thing. She typically just needs a ākick startā to get her to eat, give it a try!
https://preview.redd.it/t1fztgdnqi0b1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8167c73142da9fed3b47624b02b198a27a15c5ab Iāve only had rescues for the last 40 years, soānot knowing the previous ownerāI had to play āguess what I previously ateā with most of them.
Victor from Chewy.com
Raw dog food for breakfast, Scrambled egg and rice for lunch, Raw dog food, rice, and either carrots or green beans for dinner. She's 6 months old.
Stella & Orijen w/ mixed of fresh meat sometimes
Farmer's Dog. It's a bit more expensive, but so worth it
Raw - My GSD has been so much healthier since the switch. Changed to raw when she was around 8 months old, she's now 11 years old and very healthy!!
Definitely not kibble. I have Perfectly Raw delivered twice a month.
the hearts of socialists
I mean... is there a dark web market for this? Would be interested to know their source. Lol
Never reveal your sources!
I was feeding mine Acana Light and Fit (itās the only food that *both* my picky beagle and my Shep would eat)
Inukshuk kibble with either egg, salmon or liver powder on top
PURINA HA with added meat for protein and a pancreas additive. She has allergy issues and she's done well on the HA, but needs animal protein so I give her pork or beef with each meal, and some eggs once in a while.
Purina Chicken and rice for dog food/ chicken thighs for dinner
Our dog is allergic to chicken so we use the purina pro plan large breed. the salmon and rice mixture. And once a day Whenever possible we give him apples, bananas, cottage cheese, pumpkin or rice in a kong.
I buy mine American Journey, salmon, brown rice and vegetable kibble from Chewy.
Purina Pro Plan (large breed).
Virbac for puppies Large breed, he's grown quite a stud...
She likes to eat cat food, suplements we give to cows, *FISH FOOD* and will literally chew grass and earth and moths I really don't understand my dog's brain, or stomach, in fact Edit: she also hunts, so she gets to eat raw meat and sometimes she finds some already dead thing and eats it. I tried to stop her from eating a dead dove (it was rotting already) and she growled at me :/
We started with Iams puppy and have slowly been switching over to Iams large breed since she turned 1 a couple months ago.
Ty for this thread, been wondering if I should stay with Hills or switch. I wanted a more āhomemade dietā. Always thought Iād do that if I got my pupper which I finally have. saving this thread haha
Awesome. I'm glad it was helpful, and also, that so many folks commented. Honestly, this is one of the most active subreddits I'm a part of.
Acana puppy formula. Daily supplement of either plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or hard boiled egg
Everything I eat.
She was on Kirkland brand whatever for a while, and we added Kirkland canned food when we needed to incentivize her to eat before going to doggy daycare (so she wouldnāt starve all day long with her friends!) Soon, that was not good enough.
Purina pro plan chicken an rice or lamb. An a lil chicken or beef stick with low sodium an a little daily vitamin. About 2 cups a meal.
Purina Pro Plan. Sensitive stomach.
Acana. Sheās a year old now. Digests it well and is full at the end of meals.
I feed him people who say āthey donāt like German Shepherdsā
Inukshuk performance Marine 16. It's 26% protein and 16% fat. I also add Primal Raw frozen nuggets in beef variety. It's a complete and balanced raw diet. I just thaw it with warm water. My girl is very picky and sensitive. But she eats this no problem!
Orijen grain free
She was 8. I miss her. š¢ https://preview.redd.it/vjoy7ygicj0b1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ee36e60ca5adc386d7bf9854e787f7eb271afdd
So sorry about your lost š«
Thanks. I hope your doggo has a many wonderful, loving years with you. He's a handsome dude! Please hug him for me.
This is a great looking dog and companion
I want to come back to this thread and read more solutions. Our GSD is so itchy all the time All. The . Time .
Food usually, sometimes the souls of my enemies.
one of my dogs is sensitive/allergic to chicken. That narrows down my options considerably. We have settled on Simply Nourish - Ancient Grains; either the Pork or Salmon/White fish. Has a decent ingredient list, no chicken, and a somewhat higher calorie content, even has a decent fiber percentage. (these are all things that are required by this one dog, the other four just get what works for him) as far as the price, it is pretty middle of the road for dog food. (all 5 are GSDs)
Purina Pro Plan with roasted chicken.
door to door salespeople
Ha... don't we all wish.
Royal canin GSD as a puppy and now adult (switched around 18 months)
Warning: Just never mix raw and kibble, they are digested differently and it may cause a stomach flip.
Some con points would be stuff like: Highly processed foods: "dead food", Frequently no sufficiently open declaration, low moisture content, High vegetable content, Contains antinutrients, Not species appropriate, Contains food mites, Usually too many different ingredients and Lower digestibility. I've learned that stuff by a person who very much learned about dog food over several years. They did some very nice pro's and con's posts about kibble food, wet food and barf food.
Agreed. This thread is making me sad.
Me,too. I'm surprised at the number of people who only feed kibble.
Raw diet is what's recommended. I believe it is the best.
Hills science diet with various meats, a boiled egg, steamed veg, a little honey and whatever else I have to spare.
Neigbourhood cats.... Damn he liked to chose them.
What ever he can catch in the yard.
I fed mine āOl Roy from Walmart. They were healthy and loved it. Itās cheap, and there were no quality issues.
Food, mostly.
What I eat he does eat all Come food

I know I'm a crazy person but my GSD gets freshpet. Before that she got Taste of The Wild, which has a really good dry and wet food.
Each of pups(2GSDs+3 Black Labs)always start on a grain free plan. At about 9 months we have a full spectrum blood panel done for allergies and sensitives. That is a $200 bill from our local vet. Those tests have served us and the pups very well
Hills Science Diet sensitive skin and stomach because she's almost 13 and that's what she likes.
Our puppy has been on Purina Pro for a while but at the end of winter developed some itching and scratching. The vet said that it might be some food allergy, and suggested switching. Two months on hydrolized protein food - and less itching. Might be also spring, better humidity, etc. Switched to Royal Canin after that, so far so good
Is it bad to feed my dog only dry food ?
Keep in mind that kibble is pretty much void of any real nutrients. It's produced by extrusion, which requires high heat, which destroys most of the nutrients that were in it before. I only give mine a little kibble, now and then and never mix the 2. My boy is 98 pounds and a small 8lb bag of kibble lasts me 2-3 months because his diet is really all raw.
No. They eat what they eat. Most dogs eat dry food all their lives.
Fromm Adult kibble with an occasional soft food treat.
I feed diamond naturals all life stage and diamond puppy respectively on breed as well as an array or veggies, fruits and meats that are safe for dogs
Dr. Garyās Best Of Breed. My black GSās coat is soooo shiny due to that food
Royal Canin GSD formula because it's $110 a bag so it must be good right? He loves it! But then again he also loved the last formula...and the plumerias in the backyard ... a 2x4 and bananas HE LOVES BANANAS.
Purina one lamb hard food and purina one beef and rice wet food She also gets 3 vitamin/allergy chews a day and 2400 mcg (mg?) Fish oil
Raw food

We've been feeding our 5 year old different types of Victor foods, some grain-free. Lately we've been mixing canned Purina High Protein as well

Victor - multi pro. They seem to love it! They tried different Victor versions and were not fans of the others.
