The idea of cursed scar was probably inspired by Le Guin's Earthsea when Hayao Miyazaki made Princess Mononoke. The design of the foggy curse is probably under the influence of Daijiro Morohoshi's manga. Tears of the Kingdom inherited those elements via Hayao Miyazaki's works.

valkrycp

I love Le Guinn and Earthsea

ReallyGlycon

So does Miyazaki!

Chackiesaur

I love them both! Sad that we will not see Tales from the Earthsea directed by Hayao himself and not his son. That would've been a great film!

OliviaElevenDunham

Same. It's such an amazing series.

N_L5

The depths in Tears of the Kingdom is a deliberate nod to Nausicaa. Zelda and Ghibli often go hand in hand with style and love for each other.

Cats_Parkour_CompEng

On that note. I heard rumor, following the Mario movie's success, of a Zelda movie. The only way I can see that being half decent is if it's basically just princess Mononoke but in Hyrule.

Jet_Jirohai

Princess Mononoke is a masterpiece and a large part of its success is the characterization and morally grey presentation of humanity, both the good and the gritty reality of the human condition Given Zelda can't go that dark and characters are as deep as- well, Zelda game characters, I hope they don't go the route of trying to emulate Miyazaki's style. I don't think they'd nail it

not_mueller

Zelda & Mononoke definitely have a lot in common and have since the series debuted. Whether it's common ancestors or influencing each other I can't say, but generally Ghibli & Zelda definitely have similar ideas floating around

Ye, that's why I think Zelda taking from Mononoke solely isn't a complete viewpoint, when I think there's similarities that Zelda has had since its early days that Mononoke has as well. I see it more as just similar creative goals/influences/spaces

-ProfessorFireHill-

Uh have you seen [this?](https://youtu.be/Z6BeAtdoELY?si=oAGXKCTQ2izkqIw8) Its almost a straight rip of the beginning of Princess Mononoke.

SonicTheFanhog

Yeah. Lol There's no way Zelda doesn't take at least a little bit of inspiration from Ghibli. And that's in no way a bad thing.

Gorego22

There’s a fine line between inspiration and copying…

he_chose_poorly

Breath of the Wild feels like playing Mononoke Hime. They even recoloured Link's trusty green garb to Ashitaka blue...

DrQuailMan

There's also a certain castle that rises into the sky just a bit. https://i.imgur.com/WsojI0G.png

SonicTheFanhog

Skyloft reminds me of Laputa. Yeah Zelda is definitely Nintendo's most Ghibli-esque franchise.

claud2113

Homie, Breath of the Wild is a giant homage to Ghibli and Hayao Miazaki

Weekly_Bathroom3629

i’m pretty sure the creators of zelda have mentioned that they take inspiration from ghibli a lot. It’s not uncommon! I really don’t think it’s a bad thing

Maximousey

No shit 😂

LikeLikeChoi

That's a bit of a what I am supposed to do before I exercise.

A couple of great videos about how Ghibli inspired botw/totk. https://youtu.be/2fPz7kGduT4?si=QFLOxK7ym4ShEHqA https://youtu.be/gtDPr2hcyZY?si=h1k4Vqe7RE9HYAqP

Early_Accident2160

This is an excellent video describing Ocarina of Time and the ties of Shinto-ism.. worth a watch But it describes how similar these stories are. https://youtu.be/GyUcwsjyd8Q?si=wbUVdZ3uztJnby2Z

OliviaElevenDunham

Both BOTW & its sequel have been influenced by Studio Ghibli. There is a creature in BoTW that is similar to the Forest God from Mononoke.

chainsawmovie

Totk got inspired by ghibli a lot. [(SPOILER)] Just look at the ending when Zelda falls from the sky. It looks like that girl from the castle in the sky. There are probably many more similarities and personally I love it

ghirox

What? A character with a wounded arm that persists through the whole story? Surely it was invented my Miyazaki and only TOTK has copied that /s, I do think TOTK borrows from a lot of stories, and Mononoke is likely one of the stories they borrow from even since BOTW

ParttimeCretan

If it did it's all the better for it.

fanran

The first ten or so hours of TOTK felt like living inside of a Ghibli world. Then the magic wore off when you start to notice repetitive elements.

itrashcannot

Not unless you try to build the most batshit insane stuff you can lol. And mess around with enemies.

Gekkuri

Yeah I also pieced a lot of Ghibli stuff and totk together :'D [my post about the similarities (beware of spoilers)](https://www.reddit.com/r/tearsofthekingdom/s/YQkue3qQ3O)

TrustThePressNot

HAHA!! And it doesn’t go far enough!!: https://www.reddit.com/r/Breath_of_the_Wild/s/9BZoAWVHEJ “Good artists steal.” -Neil, Artist

TrustThePressNot

[SPOILER: They’re all based on Japanese Forest Spirits called ‘Kodama’]

zenkat

Both BOTW and TOTK are huge love letters to Miyazaki. The Koroks. The background scenery. The floating sky cities. The castles. Pretty much everything is a big wet kiss to Studio Ghibli. I'm OK with that. 😸

mrchumblie

If you search on YouTube for some Mononoke / TOTK comparison videos you won't be disappointed. Same goes for general Studio Ghibli influence for the BOTW + TOTK

Fair_Bat_8058

Oh really? Just a bit??
