Nowadays, he’s a defensive-minded forward who can put up secondary goal scoring. Maybe around 20 goals a season. Mid-to-close range shooting. No special skill that stands out other than having very solid on-ice awareness. Tends to shoot more, but will pass if someone else has the better opportunity. I was surprised when I saw the Rangers trade for him, especially if they do put him with Kreider and Zib. He’s a decent passer but it’s not his primary thing. Which is kinda the same thing as both of those guys too from my understanding.

SRSgoblin

His special skill is being lethal on the PK. Him and Karlsson as a PK duo was lethal, one of the best forward tandems in the league at the PK.

RLLRRR

The Reilly Smith Shorty was a beautiful thing.

Boring_Masterpiece_9

was hoping for a good passer this summer to help zibanejad score more 5v5 (because hes a powerplay merchant), maybe reilly adds to the line but im not sure he fits the scheme.

Throw_away91251952

That’s why I was pretty surprised they went for him. Seems like another shooter to add to a like of under performing shooters. I thought they’d go after someone like Tervainen or Monahan but I guess they were off the board too quickly and a bit too pricey.

Boring_Masterpiece_9

I’m very mad the Rangers missed out on turbo. Oh well, Smitty will do. Still a good player it seems.

hyrle

Very underrated player too.

Zilabus

He’s a defensive forward like the other commenter said. My guess would be they want to bring him in to take first man back defensive responsibilities. Is well rounded in offense but his shot isnt super noteworthy. At times on offense he can look very snakebitten and i believe he was very hot and cold on offense w pitt as well. More of a heady player that is in the right places. Also a big leadership presence, was known as being a players player in his time at vgk.

Knights_When

He will never be the liability on a line but he also won’t be the star. He can play any line 1-4 and has solid hockey IQ.

rowdywp

He worked a lot better with Karlsson than Eichel. Not sure who would be comparable on the rangers. Decent passing, shot and goal scoring is up and down, top notch defensively and PK

Big-Scientist-3195

Drury should have ponied up harder for Marchessault - since he and Reilly can be real good together.....Sigh.....Vegas and NYR once again have some shit in common right now.......Fanbases stressed.

bravostan2020

He, like the rest of the Knights, was better with the team and not as an individual player. See his numbers with the Penguins.

ThorlinLurch

He's very good with breakaways

Especial38

Why does this feel like Ranger Management asking Reddit guys about someone they just acquired? Ask the penguins, he hasn’t been o this team for a year.

Boring_Masterpiece_9

why would i ask penguins fans when they had a one year sample to look at? y’all had him for 6 years and some playoffs. if you didnt wanna answer you could have just not typed anything, thanks

Especial38

If he was traded after a year, that could give you some clues

Boring_Masterpiece_9

oh yeah. vegas really wanted to dump the guy who helped them win a cup and consistently scored around 50 points a season. it totally wasnt because of cap issues. you’re very bright.

Especial38

Hey buddy, have you been paying attention to what Vegas had done n the last 24 hours. Looks like you think you know it all huh?

toastygrilledpickles

Relax man, you’re the guy that wanted reaves as a player to come back. He just asked a question

SRSgoblin

It's always the people with the most outrageous takes who are general bellends even when there's no reason to be, isn't it?
