Played with a 78 year old the other day who shot 81 on a par 72 with a slope of 119. +2 on the front 9. It was a masterclass of ball positioning and playing the course - I got to see real golf that day. Of course I was peppering the long grass and smashing drivers for whatever direction the ball wanted to go. Shot a +23. I feel like I should take my driver out of the bag after seeing this specimen of a golfer.
I shot the best round of my life (76) playing a match against a 70 year old I met on the first tee. Course was open but 7200 yards. He beat me by 4 and took my money
I feel like short game doesnāt have anything to do with what tees you play from? Maybe Iām crazy, but if you hit your irons and woods well, you should be able to get there in relatively the same amount of strokes, no?
Iām not here to tell you how to play tho lol. But I will say itās a different flex telling people you play blues rather than whites, and seems like your distance could handle it. Shit I went to the range today and was hitting my 3 wood about as far as my 5 iron every time. And thatās not a compliment to my 5, but a diss to my ability to hit woods.
250 with a 5 wood is pretty damn impressive imo. Donāt sell yourself short man. I wish I could hit a 5 wood 250š
I did not mean to be disrespectful. It's a subject I deal with in my own game. For years, I was long and accurate off the tee. But bad with irons and FWs. By handicap, I should play the whites. But when I'd hit a drive 265, my group would gripe that I'm on the wrong tees.
Now I only drive 225 or so, and the tees are a more clear choice. I hit irons and FWs much better now and my index is lower. I'm learning the senior game.
I didnāt think you were being disrespectful man, I was agreeing with you! Other guy said he doesnāt play back because his short game. I donāt feel like short game has much impact on what tees you play from tho. Someone who hits a 5 wood 250 and hits irons well seems more than capable of playing blues to me, regardless of short game!
Played a local qualifier for an amateur championship and a guy in my group was a retired mini tour pro. He was the only person in the field to birdie all four par 5s. Masterclass is right.
Heās 200-220 up the left side with a fade to dead center of the fairway. He uses a utility wood on anything outside of 150 but he has hands like Scottie on day 4. Anything short or off is going to be within a couple feet
Sober for 10 here at 35ā¦.passion for golf those first few years made me realize thereās so much more to life. Congrats to your pops, I spend 8 hours a weekend with my father on the course and that Time with him is the most cherished. He just turned 70 today and still competes.
Happy for him and for you. Ā What a round. Ā Find a way to celebrate it a bit if you havenāt alreadyā¦take him for a beer, buy a cigar, whatever you guys do. Ā Thatās 40 years of effort paying off!Ā
This.
Played with a late seventies golfer who told a story about 2 incredible weeks he had 15 years earlier shooting low 70s.
He was so focussed on "I'm gonna shoot high 60s soon" he said his lifetime regret was not appreciating the moment, and said he now had to live with knowing that that was the best golf he would ever shoot in his life, and in the moment he just looked past it...
Sometimes, the journey really *is* the destination.
Good for both of youā¦. What an accomplishment that he achieved at his age.
Youāre so fortunate to have your Dad to play rounds with.
Wish my Dad was still here and I could watch him bogey every hole. Iād ask him what did you have on that hole Dad ? āA Bogart sonā was his standard reply. A bogey golfer after 4 back surgery, he was ok with that.
Unfortunately I still have to go to workš he plays with a group of 8-12 guys for $1 holes a couple times a week. Thatās how I know the score is legit these dudes do not fuck around for their $1.
He regularly bitches about the ābull shitā these grumpy old men make him play out of. āI nearly broke my wrist today because that dickhead bill made me play off a tree rootā they have been playing together for decades at this point š there is no love once they tee off
He exclusively played with a group of 8-12 old ass men for $1 holes and they go hard hard. Thatās how I know the score is legit. These old men take their $1 seriously
My grandma played 4 or times a week from when she was in her 30s till she was 98 and (whisper cancer) took her. She would shoot under her age quite often once she turned 80, sounds like your father is going to do that even sooner. She had 3 hole in ones and one time she was playing with my little brother she hit her tee shot in the water teed another one up and holed that one. She used the same putter for her entire life, why wouldn't you if you never 3 putt with it. We buried her with it in her favorite golf outfit. Her game was 150 straight as an arrow chip close to the hole and one putt, off to the next hole. Like everyone else I was busy seeing what was behind every tree, how deep every body of water was, how much sand is in the bunker. Never was able to beat her score, I could win some holes but the consistency would win the day. It's like pepe le pew that would just lightly bounce along after the girl rabbit while she was zooming everywhere but he would always catch her when she ran into something.
Tell your dad congratulations from me and I hope you both have many more rounds together.
> Beaver island golf course
Thanks, I've [added what I can to the wiki](https://golfcourse.wiki/course/beaver_island_golf_course-grand_island). Whoever named those holes should be banned from hole naming for life. š The level of bad pun wordplay is really off the charts.
Thatās nys for you. Itās a state course. Iām sure they paid a healthy amount for an āexpertā to name these and make the brand new hole signs with the hole name
Good for your pops! Iāve been shooting high 80s/low 90s consistently for a few months after starting back up at the sport a few years ago after not playing for 20 years. I thought I had finally got a hold of my driver. Turned 43 on Monday and shot 100 and 102 this week with my driver slicing hard which I had been used toā¦ made me smile about humbling this game can be.
My dad loves golf and plays 3-4 times a week, I've only played with him like twice ever, I tend to make up fake scenarios in my head about us playing together. Wish I cared enough to actually go out and play though lol.
Normally, I absolutely hate the pretentious fart-smelling names designers (or courses) give each hole. That is, until today. This course/designer gets it. Where is this course?
And congrats to the old man!
Well stated @TwoSauced1115!
I just wish Golf Clubs were inclusive of all the wannabe golfers who would like to shoot for the fences! I guess Iām talking about the expensive nature of the Game to non-Proās.
But yes, not giving up: Never give up; Never surrender! :-P
And I do suppose Public Clubs have decent Membership Packages in my area, but here is to playing in FL one day!
At 61 Iāve started to play forward like the modified tees Pinehurst has here, called the maples tees, combo of green and white. I enjoy the game more and GHIN has the slope for them
Bravo....but im not sure how much merit it holds...I shot a 10 on a par 4 like a hour ago. Earth must have increased its spin for a couple hours or something ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)hahahh
If I live to 101 I can finally shoot my age.
On a good day? š
If every hole is downwind and every cup is middle of the greenā¦ and every green is bowl shaped. Then YES!

Just another 39 years and I'll shoot a round I'm proud of.
Lol yes
One in a million ā¦ so your saying there a chance
Watching old man golf is a thing of beauty. Congrats to your pops. 150yds and straight every damn time.

Took my driver out of the bag and it's the best thing I've ever done. My 3 wood is about 10 yards shorter but hits the fairway almost every time
I find 3 wood way harder to hit off the tee than driver. Driver goes straight, 3 wood might hook or slice. Gimmie the big stick
Same here I go 5 wood, we play from the whites so 225-250 keeps in a good position to play the course.
If you hit a 5w up to 250, you might be on the wrong tees.
Not at all, my short game is trash and I canāt control my driver. Playing 5800-6200 yds is where itās at.

To be frank, that's the round of their life for 98% of r/golf. Congrats dad š
He officially can retire as a Scratch Golfer
One shot away from shooting his age!! Awesome round but I know Iād be having nightmares about that random 5 footer I missed haha
No nightmares allowed when you finish the round of your life with two birds
Legendary shit
Love the birdie-birdie finish. Anything can happen! Have to play all 18 holes.
That was literally the first thing I said to him. āPhenomenal close popsā if it was me I would have done the math and gone double double
Buy that man a beer
Sober for 40 years. Iāll buy him a Pepsi and a steak

Par. Well done. That last putt must have been a knee-knocker.
The names of the holes over the scoring columns is a nightmare. Whoever designed these scorecards are dumb....
Thatās New York State for you š
Uggghhhhh
One stroke away from shooting his age. Thats rad.
Bravo!
Well. I had him after #1. Then It was all downhill from there.
Holy shit almost shot his age! Awesome!
Played with an 84 year old who with 5 three puts shot 78 from the whites. Par 71
I just started at 20 so I figure I should be on par with your dad for going even
Donāt look at my score card. Trust me itās double that
![gif](giphy|j6uK36y32LxQs)
Wow. Thatās great!!
What a legend. Old man golf + bombs off the tee is the most lethal combo
I like how every hole has a name on the card. Never played a place with that.
Wow!! Awesome pop!!
I love that you have such a great relationship with your dad. Cherish it.

Good pals to have around. Can imagine the conversations on the 19th hole š.
Old timer in our group shot the lowest round of his life. 77. After 40 years of golf. Man I was so happy for the dude.
Even from the yellow I canāt touch that. Mad props
I mean Biden says he is a 6 handicap and heās a decade older
Trump has a better handicap than Nicklaus and he swings like that
That was the biggest lie of the night lol
Report back when he has 2 club championships under his belt.

Congrats to him!!!
Those hole names are ruining that beautiful scorecard.
Congrats to your Dad!
Before he passed, my grandpa scored a birdie on his 93rd birthday. A true lifetime sport! congrats to your pops!
Congrats. I went -1 recently for the first time ever and was a 4 cap at the time. Now I can barely break 90. The ups and downs are so weird
Take a pic with you and him and the ball then frame it with the scorecard. Itāll bring a smile to both of your faces for decades

I hope you hugged and bought him a beer, I hope the sun shone and I hope itās a day youāll never forget.

What a finish šš»
Oh yeah!!!!!!!!!š that sick ! I bet heās going thrill beyond belief , I would be .
I love to see it. Golf is truly the game that keeps on giving
Almost shot his age!

Well done. Has he been playing for 60 years? Just curious been playing for thirty and haven't posted that yet.
Congrats Pop!

Nobody there was there to witness it? š
He plays with 8-12 guys a couple times a week. They have a designated score keeper per group and you keep your own score to compare
Birdie, birdie finish with the thought of a personal best on the way,What a beauty.
Either nerves of steel or not paying attention. I absolutely would have crumbled
ā¦. Of course hitting from shorter tees is easierā¦. 70 years olds could dunk a basketball if we lowered the hoops to 2ft off the groundā¦.
