The other nominees are Clive Wyvern Rosfield of Final Fantasy XVI and Princess Zelda of Tears of The Kingdom.
It's funny that this penniless ronin is up against a son of an archduke and a princess of a kingdom lol, and they're both coming from long time classic video game franchises.
They made a last minute bid to keep Kojiro from getting “last-seasoned” by throwing in that Iori sees his own TG as the inferior version in the latter’s FGO profile.
Not that untraditional.
Trained by the best mentors (Musashi and Sasaki), protective of a younger (adoptive) sibling that got kidnapped, parents are dead, got a third mentor that doubles as a supernatural mascot/guide, causes the female leads to fall for him (Dorothea and Yui), have a serious personality about duty, defeats gods... You could find tons of JRPGs whose main character overlaps with Iori.
That’s not his character so much as stuff that he happens to him, Iori’s character, personality, and motives are pretty unique. Well the deeper aspects of his personality, him being a calm swordsman isn’t completely unheard of. He’s an exceptionally True Neutral style protagonist who you think is Neutral Good for most of the game.
I think Iori is just too muted a character to win it. That doesn’t make him a bad character by any means, but the impact of his lines and posture are usually subtle, which is typically not in line with contests like this, which favor vibrant, exaggerated characterization.
Honestly I don’t think that would be a large issue, that type is very popular in Japan. The bigger issue here is that Iori is simply way more niche than his two competitors, Sam Rem and Iori aren’t quite on the level of flagship titles from Square and Nintendo. The fact he’s here at all really speaks to how much people who played Sam Rem liked him I think.
Just for reference, the previous three years' nominees (winner in bold):
**2022**
- **Arven / Pokemon Scarlet and Violet**
- Kirby / Kirby and the Forgotten Land
- Ruka Kayamori / Heaven Burns Red
**2021**
- Alphen / Tales of Arise
- Ethan Winters / Resident Evil Village
- **Gold Ship / Uma Musume: Pretty Derby**
**2020**
- Cloud Strife / Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Ichiban Kasuga / Yakuza: Like a Dragon
- **Jin Sakai / Ghost of Tsushima**
I'm also pretty pessimistic Iori would win against Clive and Zelda since he's niche compared to the two. But who knows... Would be funny if he does tho.
Well, he was ultimately my favorite protagonist in games last year.
Oddly enough, my second favorite, Elise from Little Goody Two-Shoes, had a lot in common with him, arc-wise.

That is super funny.... And now I'm imagining Iori challenging Clive to a fight.
Inb4 Wyvern is just a bigger swallow >!dragon is also just a bigger swallow!<
Iori vs Savior of France, who win?
Kojiro has one sword, Iori has two swords. Two is more than one, therefore Iori wins.
Twice the Tsubame Gaeshi. Twice the power.
They made a last minute bid to keep Kojiro from getting “last-seasoned” by throwing in that Iori sees his own TG as the inferior version in the latter’s FGO profile.
Well he doesn’t say “inferior” just “not necessarily better”. More an implication that they’re equal
People love murder hobos
Lol
Pretty based nominees, honestly.
Nah that is wild lmao
I would probably voted for Zelda, Though I understand that her screentime isn't really that much
That’s fucking crazy, he really is the goat
Nah I’d win is real.
*cue Takeru giving Iori a bouquet and a smile*
You scared me so hard 💀 in my language, "bouquet" got another one meaning
Mr Iori "These hands are rated E for err'body" Miyamoto everyone
>Nah, I'd win >Actually won
Iori deserves it. Legitimately a fantastic untraditional main protagonist that I'll remember for quite a while.

I think he was talking about... Well, the OTHER side of Iori that is kinda untraditional.
That’s not his character so much as stuff that he happens to him, Iori’s character, personality, and motives are pretty unique. Well the deeper aspects of his personality, him being a calm swordsman isn’t completely unheard of. Seriously? Tho my personal bet is Clive
This is a hard one for me. I love both of these guys so much, and they each have their own pros and cons.
I think Iori is just too muted a character to win it. That doesn’t make him a bad character by any means, but the impact of his lines and posture are usually subtle, which is typically not in line with contests like this, which favor vibrant, exaggerated characterization.

Okay, I was not ready for Golshi and Kirby being there, the whiplash compared to all the others is pretty damn funny
And Gold Ship actually won too lol. Wild.
A part of me is mad kirby lost. Other part is happy that my boy arven won... What do i do?
Be happy since Kirby would also be happy. He also probably got a sandwich from Arven.
>Ruka Kayamori / Heaven Burns Red Honestly surprised at this one
As much as i like fate series and typemoon, i think clive in ff16 is a better written character
Yeah, he has Won.
Well, he was ultimately my favorite protagonist in games last year. Oddly enough, my second favorite, Elise from Little Goody Two-Shoes, had a lot in common with him, arc-wise.
Congratulations, penniless hobos.
Funny that AC6 actually got bunches of nominations, Rusty's VA even got norminated for Best Voiceover.
Huh
Hmmmm
Iori : Bring me Cloud now
Love both but clive it is for me, his story is just beautiful.
did he win or was nominated. either way grats!
I just don’t see it. Is it just the Japanese buff? Or is it the PS5 exclusivity of FF16.
my guy, its a japanese contest.... also, ff16 is japanese too
Iori is a Japanese figure though. Clive is not. He’s from a fictional country.
