I always thought Mark was jealous of Derek and wanted to be him. Makes sense he would go after women Derek is with if that's the case. I think Meredith had a small physical attraction to Mark, but not enough to actually get with him, especially considering the circumstances. I always wondered if they would have gotten together (or even just had a one night stand situation) if Mark had still been alive when Derek died.
It’s honestly not uncommon for a widow or widower to end up with their dead spouses sibling. It’s not common, but it’s definitely something that happens enough that it is heard of.
I don't think it's all that weird. I've known a lot of people to date other family members after they end their relationship with a person. I also know several siblings who got with the sibling of the person their sibling was with.

Meredith to see if she’s really all in with Derek or maybe he just trying to sabotage his already broken relationship with Derek by making it worse! Cause there is no way Derek would forgive him for hooking up with Meredith! We’d have that season 5 fight between them in season 3!!!
Mark on top of sleeping with Derek’s ex wife has also slept with all his sisters! It’s beyond weird lol! He’s always been jealous of Derek in the past and always looked up to him and put him on this pedestal.
Meredith tho I don’t think would ever go there because she knows how hurt Derek was by the Mark and Addison betrayal! She might’ve thought Mark was attractive and even had a physical attraction for him here which is natural but It’s a line she’d never cross. She’s supposed to be the anti-Addison in that regard! And for all her faults cheating has never been one of Meredith’s faults! She was raised in the middle of an affair and it destroyed her family! She and Derek weren’t even together there so it wouldn’t be cheating but he’d see it as a betrayal and Meredith would never cross that line.
I think they're discussing things in the abstract. "You could " is said, but what isn't said but is assumed is: "You could, but you won't, because you love him" and I think Mark respects her for that. But who am I to say.
I think of this as a sort of wistful “what if” conversation. They both know it’s never going to happen but a part of them wishes they were not weighed down by the baggage of their involvement with Derek/Addison.
I agree, they were both self sabotaging and had a lot in common. I don’t think either one of them seriously considered a relationship with each other but they could relate to each other. I always enjoyed their interactions and friendship.
I would have loved to see Meredith and Mark have a friendship like the one he had with Callie, minus the sex. They had such great chemistry, and though it was used for flirting and innuendo here, I think it could have transitioned really well to platonic siblingship-esque chemistry. Like with Alex.
After these initial moments together, Mark and Meredith don’t interact much. They interact as doctors, and because of Derek and Lexie, but not as their own people who get along.
But really, Derek would never trust them if they were close. Fair not to trust Mark, burned definitely take it out on Meredith.
I think if he ( or he and Lexie ) had a chance to stay around longer we may have gotten to see more of their friendship. I miss him , he really was a good guy!
They both wanted something that neither could have after having it before. So it was kinda a no brainer for their minds to wonder to each other. But ultimately, nothing happened lol
Hurt people hurt people. Derek and Derek's family were the constants in Mark's life. Just the way Meredith pushes Derek away, I think Mark is trying to push everything away. The very misleading and damaging thought process of "You can't be hurt if you don't care about anyone."
I do think he was jealous of Derek and made awful choices, just like Derek made awful choices. Derek lied by omission to Meredith about being married. Meredith had abandonment issues and is abandoned by Derek for Addison despite her infidelity.
There's a lot to this scene and to these characters. The good thing is they both grow into better, more healed people.
