To be fair you could just sync it to your phone via Bluetooth to serve the same function. I left my gd200 in airplane mode for a month and it was 3 seconds off. Synced it and now it’s spot on. I don’t mind since I prefer this watch in ‘dumb’ mode and don’t want notifications. Also extends battery life as well.
it's not the lighting, it's the panel itself is different. It's called an MIP (Memory In Pixel) display, as opposed to regular G shocks that use LED panel.

I've put a screen protector on mine.
Everything "smart" about this watch is completely useless, the menus etc you will need an hour glass to navigate, the bluetooth connection drops when notification centre has too many notifications waiting, its too big compared to original squares and the plastic stuff between the watch and straps basically pulls every hair out of your arm.
The MIP screen is cool tho, but Casio really released this to early and from what I read is that a lot of these things are actually fixed with the newer HR model, but yet they refuse to at least push out one update to fix at least the stuff that could be fixed software wise. Which makes me think they maybe even forgot to make the firmware on this watch updatable. For example for the bluetooth connection bug instead of releasing a FW update to address this they just updated the online manual to clear your notification centre if you have problems connecting.
