Installation 00 actually pitched an idea for this (something to do with campaign DLC 10 years down the line) where a Flood outbreak the size of the Forerunner-Flood war occurs, and Chief is forced to activate Halo. Definitely an interesting concept.

ADeadlyFlamingo

Love this idea and that would be hell of a last mission. Essentially everyone would likely be trying to stop you. Humans, all the covenant/banished races, and what may be left of the forerunners. The Galaxy vs The Master Chief. With a story like this, I feel the Halo 5 commercials/trailers would actually make sense.

ljkmalways

Imagine Chief being hunted by Arbiter bc Arbi wants to stop him. This would literally be the best story of my life

Bro-lapsedAnus

I just want to SEE Arby again.

ernie-jo

He’s busy selling roast beef Edit: coming back to this to say imagine The Bear but it’s The Arbiter. I would watch the heck out of that show

Bro-lapsedAnus

His Buffalo Chicken sliders are surprisingly tasty.

Imnotarunnaway

Your welcome, I'm the one in the back making them.

The_watched_bat

Pity the customer that has a problem with their meal. “Excuse me. This slider…” *Energy sword hisses to life* “…is the best slider I have ever had. “

ernie-jo

There’s more than one way to get a 5 star rating on yelp..

Bro-lapsedAnus

pauper_gaming

Were it so easy

Gjallar-Knight

Imagine one last warthog run to activate the ring. Once you get to the chamber or whatever, the Arbiter would be there, waiting to stop you.

HappyGecko117

Like a dark souls NPC quest ending

LtCptSuicide

Arbiter is helping hunt down Chief, but not to stop him. But instead to stop anyone else from stopping him. Idk how feasible it would be, I just want to see Chief and Arby back to back against the enemy one more time.

Sablesweetheart

Chief: "I expected you to try to stop me." Arbiter: "For once I have finally cought you flat footed demon. No, I have come to help you, because it is the only way. Now go, the Swords of Sanghelips will hold them back. As you would say, finish the fight."

LtCptSuicide

I legit read that in his voice and now I need it to happen. Idk if their are any artistically inclined person lurking but I would absolutely pay like... Idk like $10 because I'm unfortunately a broke ass motherfucker to see this created in a comic.

Sablesweetheart

Just typing it I could hesr his voice. And yeah, I would actually be very happy with that ending from a narrative perspective.

LtCptSuicide

So would I. But Arbiter saying "Finish the fight" absolutely has to be punctuated by him activating his energy sword.

Sablesweetheart

Oh you know it! And to form a coda with how the legendary ending is a little different, have the Arbiter toss John his energy sword, and John looks at it, then grabs his assault rifle off his back and tosses it to the Arbiter. But that's only the Legendary ending, the others are as you describe.

InsertCleverNickHere

...I just peed a little.

ZombieAppetizer

He wouldn't say anything, but he would be so pissed off inside that in the end, 343 Guilty Spark was correct all along.

Nineflames12

The narrative flip of Arbiter now becoming the one to oppose the activating of the rings when it was his religion for so long and Chief being the one to do it would be so fantastic if executed well.

the_fuego

I feel like Arby would either be the final boss or most likely be with Chief. He's pretty reasonable overall and would know that the Chief wouldn't be activating Halo just for shits and gigs. If it got to the point where Chief is convinced that the rings needed to be activated Arby knows shit has officially hit the fan given that Chief has destroyed two of them and left the Ark in shambles.

EpicGamer94500

Gives them an excuse for PvE against humans. I know people think this is stupid and rightfully so, but having missions where you fought againsy UNSC marines and ODSTs would be a interesting concept. The only times Marines were enemies in the games was the crazy guy in 343 guilty spark, the secret path in Halo 3 ODST, and Halo 5 Warzone. I thought when I was playing Halo 2 for the first time I was gonna fight against the UNSC as arbiter, shame we never saw that. I know people are gonna be like “playing against them would be boring” or “Aliens are cooler to fight” which are fair points, but I still think it would be a neat little thing.

Ad_Meliora_24

After playing Halo 3 and the books available at that time, with the Covenant gone, I thought the next logical enemy was ONI, and then Hunt the Truth made it seem like I guessed it. I could imagine a story where MC or Blue Team is against Spartan Vs that are enforcing ONI imperialism. But as for a story that could happen immediately after we left off in Halo 6, something like this: Cortana with Rampancy and Logic Plague connect to the Domain at the end of Halo 4, but in the Domain Cortana is able to basically undergo defragmentation and cure Rampancy, and she’s able to recognize and contain the Logic Plague. Cortana’s solution to separate herself from the Logic Plague is to basically put all the damage and infected portion of herself into one Fragment. However, the only way she could assure that the fragment didn’t recombine with her was to delete what remains, and the way she does this is to modify a Composer, and she puts herself into a human body, basically looking like a young Halsey in her prime as Cortana had her exact and complete genetic map. So, Cortana puts herself into a body, the damaged and infected fragment recombines with what Cortana left in the Domain, and the Halo 5 “Cortana” is this damaged Logic Plague Fragment of Cortana, and the Cortana we knew from Halo 1-3 is in a human body somewhere and Chief is on a mission to find her. Spin Off: James was picked up by a small stealth Covenant ship of atheist archaeologists hiding from the Covenant as they knew the truth about humans, halo rings, forerunners, and the Flood. They need James because they need a Reclaimer and a capable fighter on a dangerous quest to the edge of Covenant space in search of ancient human knowledge and technology to fight the flood as they assumed their zealous brethren would release the flood from containment. Fast forward and James’ armor is very battle worn and in desperate need of maintenance or replacement. Towards the end of the game a total shift, new enemies, like in Halo: CE. Introduction to a new character, an ancient human, just as things look bleak and near hopeless. The ancient human takes James and his alien crew to a small ancient human ship where he gets a new set of ancient human armor to replace his old failing mjonir armor, in return the ancient human wants help fighting the new enemy to save the universe. She removes her armor before they take off in their new ship towards imminent danger, and it’s Halsey, physically around age 24, DNA damage repaired, arm regrown, ready for a redemption arc to save the universe herself, with the help of James and his alien crew.

Pearse_Borty

Chief would finally earn his title as Demon at the end of that; he would have brought the apocalypse, and total annhilation.

PlushieGorbachev

I love that. Very poetic

JimBones31

If we're going to light the rings, I want there to be a plan to re-seed the galaxy.

343GltySprk

It's a good thing the forerunners came up with a solution for that and have made reseeding installations, like some of the shield worlds, that are ready to resume production at the next firing.

Sablesweetheart

Yup. Upload everyone's mind, fire the rings, clone them, upload their mind, get back to fighting over the galaxy, minus the flood.

THX450

This is just making me realize that if 343 ever wanted to do a very hard soft reboot of the franchise, this would be their ticket there.

JimBones31

It could play out like a crossover between fallout and halo. Everyone emerging from vaults with forerunner experiments in half the vaults and ONI ones in the other half.

AdonisGaming93

Activation of Halo would be fine by as a franchise conclusion. But....we need some GOOD campaigns before that. It can't be Halo 5 and infinite that is the ending....

Deluxechin

From what it sounds like, is it would be a series of games which is a Human v Flood war, that ends like that, although I’ll argue, how engaging is fighting the flood to have that pretty much be your only enemy for multiple games

Tabub

I mean they could easily revamp the flood and make them a lot more intelligent fighters

Einar_47

Flood infected spartans would be nice to see, they're hyped up a lot in the other games.

BioMan998

Honestly those should be mini bosses. Like ho the HVT system in infinite worked

LtCptSuicide

Or include more forms. One thing I love about the Flood in both Halo Wars is their variety in forms to fight against. In the FPS titles we got... Popcorn...bigger popcorn... Infected fungus zombies until 3 which gave us mighty morphin, Shooty, Looty, and Carl. (Turret form, Stalker form, and Tank form) which were cool in theory but just having one unit constantly shape shift between them in the most annoying way didnt really translate well as far as good gameplay goes.

SparsePizza117

That would actually be a great ending. Holy shit that would be sad.

atatassault47

Cortana: Did you finish the fight? Chief: Yes. Cortana: What did it cost? Chief: everyone...

LCDRformat

Master chief, mind telling me what you're doing on that Halo? Sir, ending

Sali_Bean

Would chief have found a way to reseed the galaxy or is he just going to wipe out all life?

doctortrento

He'll use the stored genetic material from his autojacker.

calamitydanon

johnny spreading his appleseed all across the milky way!

Mr_Gobble_Gobble

How is that interesting? That’s treading the exact same ground from the og trilogy aside from the scale of the flood being limited to the population of high charity.

SzyGuy

It would be the opposite. OG trilogy we’re trying to stop the rings from firing, last game would be trying to fire the Halos

wrproductions

I believe they mean that was the plot of the first trilogy to begin with, we were just the ones trying to stop it from firing. Making Cheif the one who fires the rings doesn’t ultimately change the story it just changes the characters and motivations. It’s still in general the same story they were originally telling. I don’t agree with them though I think it’d be an awesome ending personally, full circle kind of moment.

Bro-lapsedAnus

Yeah, I think they were equating story and plot. The same plot from a different perspective IS a different story imo.

Captain-Wilco

In Halo 3 you fire a halo to stop a flood infection

Deluxechin

I mean, sure but not really, you activate the ring before it’s finished construction causing it to pretty much self implode, and it wasn’t entirely to stop the flood but more so, kill the Gravemind

_phantastik_

I feel like that'd dampen the grand idea of his and humanity's goal to defeat/contain the flood without firing the ring. Stopping the ring in fact. I liked that and if the story ended culminating in Chief firing the ring it feels like it goes away with that sense of perseverance in the face of an impossible enemy kind of thing.

Wonderful_Ad2298

Mass Effect level disappointment

Dominoze56

Chiefs Journey end but then we get to the half baked spin offs

the_glutton17

That would be cool, but very different than the first time. The forerunners had like 10000 years while they built the halos to also genetically catalogue as many species as possible for reseeding after firing the array. No such timeline (at least with Chief firing the rings) or attempts to do the same exist. Still a really fun idea though.

onesussybaka

I want Kwan voicing MC and Makee voicing Arbiter.

TheTrueButcher

Cool, I just discovered that my limit for arousal has a new ceiling!

Acidman0123

Or… they could recast him. They’d have to do it well, but that’s another option. Although I agree, Chief needs to die or step aside at some point

dkgameplayer

I don't know how Reddit will respond to this, but if Steve signed off on AI Master Chief after his passing, I would love that. Chief rarely says anything and when he does, it's only a few words. He's also very monotone with little emotion in his speech. If that isn't the ideal scenario for AI voice-work then I don't know what is. I don't think the technology is there yet, but it's damn close. Close enough to make me laugh at classics like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbfelxg9F60).

OdiiKii1313

For a brief appearance or shitposts I think it's fine, but there's also a part of me that derives a lot of enjoyment from the media I watch and the games I play in knowing that the voices are actual recordings and not just trained AI models. With Chief especially, I really feel like Steve is a core part of who he is, and it only feels respectful to retire Chief when Steve passes. There's also a lot of secondary concerns I have, like IRL events where you can no longer have the actual actor or VA present, as well as the fact that I don't really trust companies to properly utilize or respect a dead person's voice to the same standards as the actual VA would use their own voice even assuming that it's consensual and regulated by some kind of contract. Microsoft in particular strikes me as a company that I definitely wouldn't trust.

dkgameplayer

What, you don't want to show up in a [Dove chocolate commercial](https://youtu.be/sB44n4ADg2Y?si=4hcG8UA9APz4nAqW) 21 years after you died?

lordofpersia

Have you seen the "master chief teaches you" series of vids? The AI voice that guy uses is pretty good.

SonofthePleadies

I see lots of chief dying ones. I just want big man to relax lol. End the war with the covenant and banished, chief gets his dues and gets to (try) to live a quiet life.

BurnStar4

Literally this. I don't get why he has to die lol

Here-Is-TheEnd

I just don’t see him ever stopping. Him retiring to a beach with mai tai seems super unlikely.

SonofthePleadies

That's why I said try. Honestly I just think he deserves a happy ending.

No-Warthog5491

I would agree that the Chief would need to die for that game to end but I hope they don’t do it like they did to Cortana. Maybe give the Chief a happy ending and reunite him with Cortana some how.

Bradleyisfishing

I wouldn’t even hate the idea of Chief activating the rings, but being safely inside a shield world in a crashed UNSC ship, ending like halo 3 going into a cryo sleep for potentially millennia. You know he will never be found, but there’s nothing left for him to fight for, so it’s a way for everything to end and him to finish without dying.

NoNotThatMattMurray

Honestly wouldn't mind sending Chief out like the ending of No Time To Die

Greyman1995

Go into the Domain maybe finds her there

I dont think Chief needs to die, but perhaps gets damaged beyond operationally recoverable. Final scene could be him with two robotic legs instructing new spartan recruits in tactics

Hey man you might need to lower your expectations there pal. Only so much a multi-million budget can do being backed by the one of the biggest contenders in the gaming market. Best they can do is 24/7 shop with reoccurring items at prices the cost of triple a games.

Elliot_Mess

If only it was a flagship franchise...

Internal_Mail_9366

We beat the game and then Chief takes off his armor and it’s revealed like the first Metroid with Samus that Chief is actually a woman. Would add a layer of depth to the ah… armor discussion. I am trolling btw

Purdaddy

A woman with a big mole.

uncharted_bread212

How much a woman would need to smoke to sound like Steve Downes?

Gabo7

Ah yes, a Haloid reference.

Greyman1995

More than likely, Microsoft will milk halo until it's a really dead horse and have a disappointing ending. Not with a bang but a whimper Then maybe 10 or so years later reboot the whole franchise.

sonicbeast623

I'm betting they figure out a way to loop and basically remake the first 3 games with weapon and a new chief.

ComprehensiveSell649

The sangheli are in the place of humans this time.

neurodoggo117

Exactly what I'm thinking. They'll reboot it, maybe God of War style or at least to the same extreme POV difference (not necessarily same game style, just entirely different). B/c at this point, they've changed everything so much other than the actual game style. I do think it would benefit to just change the game entirely instead of tweaking it while trying to retain OG players. I'm an OG player myself but at this point it aint happening, just change the game style entirely, might as well or just end it forever.

AstronomicalAnus

With a well written and robust campaign and with a fully developed at release multi-player offering.

BlindMerk

Pick one

AstronomicalAnus

Porque no los dos? Chief went to Mexico.

hotshot117

People are pretty crazy for suggesting the ending to be Halo firing...again. Great way to undo everything done and accomplished in the last 100.000 years. Let humanity prove why they are better then the Forerunners and let them win in a different way without having to kill everything.

wookieetamer

Yeah. If the rings go off, everything was for nothing. The only way I could see this being plausible is if the humans created a planetary shield. The rings don't even kill the flood. Just their food.

Hernia17

Its the same result as fireing the ring, A shield world would just let everyone die.

Obvious-End-7948

Go with the Dyson sphere like in Ghosts of Onyx. Do a campaign with Chief and Arbiter again. Chief pushing forward to activate the rings while Arbiter fights with the remaining races (or maybe just humanity and the elites) to reach one of the Forerunner shield worlds and then prevent the Flood from getting inside before the rings fire. After the rings go off they have to wait for the majority of the flood starve to death (seriously though, how long is that if they survived on the rings?). Could provide The Endless an opportunity to take over in the meantime. New spinoff games deal with that after a bit of a time skip. Maybe take Red Team with them and throw them in cryo at the end so Jerome can become the new protagonist.

Ridley666

I'd like it if we didn't just get a gigantic reveal on what the flood is and how firing the Halo's would absolutely not solve any problems with them. If the Halo's actually worked against the flood it would maybe be a decent way to end it but it's not that simple any more.

Some-Mathematician24

Massive space orgy with all species

Chemical-Tadpole6209

343 and Microsoft do not deserve to be cowardly and end the series without earning it.

merlinrising

Precisely

iizakore

“As the humanity-covenant coalition begins to rebuild, this planet will remain barren. A memorial to what we endured as two species joined together, and the bonds that were forged in the fires of their struggles, our struggles. Though our history is gone and our civilizations starting over, our new world will thrive thanks to the sacrifices of these heroes and many more. They will not be forgotten.” Camera pans to the only surviving picture of the chief and the arbiter as they fly towards the ring that they used to exterminate the flood with cortana 2.0 on the holo projector with them. A small scene plays showing human and sangheili children both in class with an elite teaching them, another shows humans and elites working construction to rebuild as jackals and grunts bring supplies. The next scene shows a barren brute homeworld with scorched and broken brute armor, and a prophet crown shattered at the helm of it. The final scene pans to chief’s and the arbiter’s armors, broken and cracked. This then shifts to a new young doctor, doctor S. Halsey who plugs in a chip to a barely working computer system, the system powers up and Cortana 2.0 starts up. “Chief, did we stop the flood?”

GDPIXELATOR99

Halo activates again to stop the flood. Everything comes full circle. The cycle continues.

Not_a_Psyop

I always felt like a major theme of Halo was the courage and tenacity of humanity in the face of overwhelming odds. I feel like a total reset would defeat that theme. At the very least a sizable portion of the humans and Sangheli would have to survive to prevent us feeling like all our efforts throughout the series weren’t a waste.

slvrcobra

I agree. I think it should be a firing of the Halos, but humanity has discovered a way to use them to kill the Flood for good, sort of finishing the work that the Forerunners started but weren't able to finish in time. It would be the reason why they left Flood specimens on the Halo rings; They wanted their successors to study the Flood and figure out how to kill them. I'd love to see an Endgame-style massive battle where all the races of the galaxy band together to push back the Flood and fire the Halo Array. It would be so fucking sick to see Chief and the Arbiter fighting alongside Hunters, Brutes, Jackals, Spartans, Marines, ODSTs, Grunts, etc. all in a giant last stand where maybe Chief sacrifices himself to fire the Halos, but it saves all life rather than killing all life in the galaxy.

Not_a_Psyop

Yeah, I could be wrong, but our place as a species in the Halo universe never felt cyclic to me. I just don’t get the vibe found in other works.

Synmachus

> I always felt like a major theme of Halo was the courage and tenacity of humanity in the face of overwhelming odds. I feel like a total reset would defeat that theme. That's what I was thinking... Why would Master Chief annihilate his own kind? I feel like people want some sort of poetic, tragic end because that's the "mature" way to handle things, because it "rhymes". But Halo is about hope and human resolve first and foremost.

Not_a_Psyop

Yeah halo doesn’t need a tragic ending. It’s about finishing the fight, not suicide.

SuperBAMF007

It’s the only viable ending tbh. The only way Chief could die believably (without just feeling like “ooohhh 343 HAD to kill him EVENTUALLY….”) would be by firing a Halo Ring to stop the Flood.

GDPIXELATOR99

Have him and Arbiter in the control room just like in Halo 3 but this time they’re activating the Halos instead of stopping them

Pearse_Borty

You could have a whole philosophical dialogue at the end, them locked in the control room with the sounds of absolute carnage outside as humans, aliens and Flood are trying to force their way in in a desperate but futile attempt to stop the end. Its made abundantly clear that they can still open the door, that Chief can pick up his gun and continue fighting like always and maybe he would hold off the Flood for the umpteenth time. You could have Master Chief trying to talk themselves out of it, but have the Arbiter explain the duty he had to take on and that realistically this isnt the "end", its just the annihilation of all life as they know it. Which would sound insane to Chief given he is the living definition of being too stubborn to die (whereas Arbiter is too loyal to die) - then you have the Weapon explain that she will still survive and that this time there'd be no attempt to contain the Flood and they'd be wiping the slate completely clean. And finally - point out their age. Its been a long time fighting and Chief HAS to pass away eventually. Soon humanity won't have him, and there will be no adequate replacement. Its basically an inversion of the Death Stranding ending (if you've played it), where instead of fighting to the bitter end knowing you're going to lose, instigating extinction means survival and that some element of humanity may still survive through the AIs.

danidimes8

The Great Journey is the friends we made along the way

rojasmig000

And then they share one last dialogue and maybe even finish with a hug to have a nod to the first game's legendary ending. That'll be perfection imo

Noble1xCarter

Yeah, I can't imagine killing Chief off if it's not of his own volition. I have trouble thinking of ways other than activating. Reclaimer reclaims. John Halo halos. Kinda full-circle, in a way? Or like, prophecy-y? God, I just hope 343 would actually write it well.

SuperBAMF007

The only other thing that could happen is if they give Chief a retirement of some sort (I could see a really meaningful conversation with Fred convincing him to put down the gun. I wouldn’t mind seeing that), let Jerome or some other Spartan take over, and then they’d be able to do whatever without ruining Chief

delta453

Oh man I do not mind this one actually

gohuskers123

That’s just mass effect

KezuSlayer

I feel like i’m the only one whole wants the series to end without chief dying. Kinda just want a wholesome ending for the guy.

Zaxari

Chief ensures the survival of the human race one last time. At the end, he leaves his armor to ONI (with the optics totally fried and the power supply dead and damaged) then disappears from the public eye. He then returns to the recently resettled Eridanus II system where we find John on his own small plot farm land on the outskirts of Elysium City. He's sitting on the porch in a chair, watching the sunsetting skyline in the distance. The camera pans around where we see Cortana's empty chip sitting next to him. The shot continues to pan around until we only see the bottom half of John's face, as he cracks a light smile of relief as the scene fades to black.

Its_a_Glass_of_milk

Solid

Johncurtisreeve

Halo Infinite is Halo 6

Bokenobi

Chief wakes up. It was all a cryogenic dream.

Unfortunatewombat

I’d kill Chief. Yeah, I said it. If it really was the final game for Chief, I wouldn’t want an open ended “oh he’s still out there fighting the fight”, because that wouldn’t really feel like any kind of ending at all. I don’t see him retiring, so the alternative is him dying. Give me something like Logan, where he basically gives his life to keep the Weapon safe. Let him die going out like a hero.

[deleted]

I don't know if this could ever be pulled off now after the Halo 3 ending and then the Halo 4 nuke.

wombatix

If nothing else, giving his life to save the Weapon somehow would be solid closure since Infinite's story was largely about Chief feeling like he failed to do the same for Cortana

[deleted]

Honestly I’d be fine with it if it goes down like Arthur on rdr2 where it’s more of chief finally gets to rest after achieving the mission

swans183

I was expecting Chief to die in this one. Instead we got emotional wheelspinning for the nonexistent DLC

VAVA_Mk2

Halo Infinite was Halo 6

iiitme

I was thinking more a steamy love triangle with Cortana involved know what I’m saying

VivaLaJam26

Halo’s story ended for me with 3. Quality over quantity. I’ve always felt that “4s” onwards in series generally are directionless, and none have been more evident than Halo after Bungie. Everything set after then I’ve just thought has been a crazy fever dream Chief has been having while in cryo sleep. So for me the end of Chief’s story has already happened.

Halo 3’s ending absolutely felt like a perfect end to the Halo franchise

RelativelyDank

the sombre ending of chief in cryo sleep with cortana drifting through space without knowing if/when they'll ever be found while the rest of humanity never knew whether he even made it out alive or not was honestly the best ending i think it ever could have been, for chief and cortana at least don't get me wrong i like them in the games after that but it's true they never had that same spark that the bungie stories had. i think any games after 3 should have been prequels or spin offs to continue the story with spartan 3s/4s or ODSTs in future wars where chief is a legacy to them instead of a continued character

Gamma_249

That would explain the disjointed story of the new three 343 games. Chief is having different dreams

Nid45h

You mean Halo 7? Infinite is Halo 6

Beast-Blood

Everyone saying Chief needs to die forgetting we already had a perfect ending that didn’t include him dying…. Having him stuck adrift in space after saving the galaxy. “Wake me, when you need me.” Perfect last words to hear from him. Chief just isn’t a character you can kill. Especially with everything he’s already been through and overcome.

Lazy-Lookin-Headass

I feel like the 🤓guy for pointing it out, but Halo Infinite is Halo 6.

BobSagieBauls

“Why are we here?”

Moorpheusl9

Chief activates Halo and then sits on the edge of the Control Room like Thanos does at the end of Infinity War...

delta453

Chief has to compose himself in some noble sacrifice and he is then granted access to the Domain upon completing his mission where his armor is removed from his avatar and he is granted a peaceful "afterlife" after everything thing he has given up.

Gravemindzombie

Master Chief blows up the entire covenant armada, then we get a post credit of a bunch of brightly colored morons in a box canyon

anangrytaco

Master Chief opens a military car dealer ship in Sierra Nevada and dies in a tragic traffic cone accident. That's the ending in my head.

Welllllllrip187

I wouldn’t. 🥺
