I still don't know why someone thought it was a good idea to cut the sing in the remaster. Now I have to switch to the old graphics in the right moment to hear it.
I always imagined it was licensing issues. Same reason why "Follow/2nd Movement of the Odyssey" was replaced. The songs still playing in old graphics don't add up with that theory, though.
The strange thing is that Breaking Benjamin wrote that song specifically for halo because they wanted to be a part of it. Clearly they must have not had that same relationship with the 343 staff.
Same with John Mayer playing guitar on Halo 2 for free just because he wanted to. That’s also not in the remaster.
Canonically, Chief isn’t a big fan of “flip music”, which is to say the 26th century’s version of metal. Thus I imagine that writes off most similar genres.
Given that Halsey likes classical music, and I mean classical to us 21st century folks, not classic as in Kelly listening to 580 year old Queen tracks, classic. I’m willing to bet that’s probably his jam too. Butcher teeming hordes of Covenant to some 1812 Overture. Mix things up a little.
First Strike chapter 6.
>"Amen," Sergeant Johnson added. "Now shut up and let the lady drive." He removed a mission record unit from his pocket and inserted a chip. The screen blanked; a rhythmic cacophony blasted from its single tiny speaker. The Chief recognized the sound as "flip" music—a descendant of some centuries-old noise called "metal." The Sarge had peculiar tastes, to say the least. "Just shoot me now, Sarge," Locklear protested, "and get it over with. Don't torture me with that crap first."
It doesn't specifically say he doesn't like it, but it definitely seems like he doesn't. Johnson is obviously a fan though \\m/
Hmm... so forgot it then. Makes sense honestly. I really only have a vague recollection of the story. I know I thoroughly enjoyed it, but not much beyond that.
I thought to myself "he he, Barbie Girl because it would be so unexpected" but apparently not *that* unexpected because you went and said it. Have an up-vote.
you are /u/tacassassin87 both commented this same song within a minute and a half. This made me happy.

He just emits whatever song is currently playing in thr game. I don't mean through helmet speakers, either; the music follows him around in a paranormal fashion.
Military cadences, most likely. He doesn’t strike me as the kind of person to be all that into music.
They probably couldn’t even use any of the good ones since they occupied such a niche rank/position in the UNSC.
Blow me away.

Yeah it was licensing.
The license probably only covers using the songs in the exact way they were used in the original.
Yup, same reason TV show soundtracks are sometimes changed for streaming services vs the original broadcast or DVD versions.

Kelly listens to Queen? That’s fucking awesome.
One of the books has Chief observing Kelly keeping time to "a song about a killer queen."
Same book also mentions a song, “something about biting dust” as well.

Where is it mentioned in the lore the he doesn’t like metal? I kinda wanna look into this
Somewhere in fall of reach I'm pretty sure, maybe first strike EDIT: It was first strike, see my comment below
I read First Strike and I don't remember that, but that was close to ten years ago and my memory can be pretty shitty sometimes.
