Bigangeldustfan

That rocks

savva61

Niceee, I just played it, its pretty surreal

slavik_christopher

Thanks there's a secret room no one ever found lol on the bottom level you will see a blueish light on debris floating and have to gauss jump in a particular way 😊

JabroniBomb

woah alright grandpa

slavik_christopher

πŸ˜†

Brickhead16

crazyyy

LegitimateAd8793

I remember that it was a recreation of my house, and it was also complete garbage, I didn't know how to use the snap to grid, so all the walls and furniture were about a meter long, and on top of that, I didn't know how to place props, lights, or doors, and I had no idea how to make the skybox, so you can imagine what it was like

ShidWit

A indescribable mess of rectangles. All exposed to the v o i d

WinslowWorldwide

To this day, every project I work on seems to yearn for the v o i d

Regnars8ithink

That's why I never do big maps.

themilogamer8e6

It was in gold src and it was a huge map that lagged my pc down to 68 fps. It's one of the most detailed maps I've seen and I'm planning on publishing it once it's finished. Basically an entire game in one map.

themilogamer8e6

Also it took around half a year

GamerMcNoober

β€œlagged my pc down to 68 fps” pardon me?

themilogamer8e6

Usually goldsrc runs at around 217 fps.

GamerMcNoober

Lucky

FFox398

My first map EVER was this: [https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1656725161700343654/A84EC194E4803594D2F44C96B6791D951618102D/?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=false](https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/1656725161700343654/A84EC194E4803594D2F44C96B6791D951618102D/?imw=5000&imh=5000&ima=fit&impolicy=Letterbox&imcolor=%23000000&letterbox=false) Which eventually became this: [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2318454933](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2318454933)

ShidWit

You made Bora? Thats one of most favorite maps in Garry’s mod! My first map was a gigantic mess of rectangles. But recently I made an Aldi map. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2951743586

FFox398

thanks and yeeeep. matter of fact I actually hate it... because its development was chaotic in every way you can imagine. I was mapping it as I was learning in real time.... but well, not that terrible I guess. Somehow I got tied with Nita during the process (author of resortmadness) which decided to give me a hand letting me use all of the asseets you see. Thats how it all started. Now I am where I am. And Im still a lazy F. in terms of productivity. xD

GamerMcNoober

oh my god i love this map

Brickhead16

okay. didn't have to flex so hard damn

denes-i

I swear, gmod mappers have pulled off some crazy undertakings over the years

Brickhead16

Absolutely. I spent a good part of my teenage years holding NPC battles on maps like Black Mesa Sigma and destructible building maps and im still impressed by how great they were

denes-i

Get this, as a teenager I spent maybe a 1000-1500 hours on my first a map, and I never got to finish it. Looking back at it, I should've started with an easier map.

Brickhead16

WOW. RIPPP. I can't top that, though I spent hundreds of hours on different maps, some close to completion that I never finished because I would always encounter bugs or issues that made me give up. Actually made one for HL2VR last year and it had scripted sequences, big zombie junkyard fight, a simple puzzle, aaand just stopped working out of the blue so I gave up. Damn Source engine!

denes-i

My reason for giving up was that I was forced to learn how to create custom textures and 3D models. It's not that difficult to learn, I know, but it would've taken another 500 hours to finish the map the way I wanted. And I realized this at a time when I completely ran out of motivation. That motivation never really came back. And now, that source2 is here, even the finished map would be obsolete.

Brickhead16

wow. Totally understandable. Before prop scaling in source 2, needing custom models was a common problem. I was not interested in doing that either. I usually found premade textures and used a program to make auto textures and VMTs so that part wasn't as troublesome

FFox398

I mean well is not about flexing, actually about how cursed it was, just look at the change notes 134 of them lol... does that give you an idea that is not how you release a first map

Brickhead16

Gotcha man. Just complimenting how much better even the first image was than my first map. I was joking

DJGluuco

A CSS map of a skyscraper rooftop with a helipad. I put in enough assets to get it running and start learning how to do things and somehow it got shared to the workshop without my knowledge or consent; I learned of this because a friend said he had played on it

potatoinastreet8

I made it only like last year but it was something like a big grass plane with a concrete house that had a cheaple inside

Korti213

Oh it was really nostalgic, I had made my school and we had a cs 1.6 match between classes on it

hurB55

School + Counter-Strike is not good

GoldKghtRT

[Instantly remembers the guy that got suspended for making a 1.6 map out of his school](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SrHAw_V5UMM)

denes-i

"virtual reality looks fully realistic"... what a line!

brodydwight

Very bare bones, but i tried https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2111901823

Disastrous-Map-8574

It was for CSGO, basically a copy of mirage with a hollow skybox, didn't even knew how to make stairs, so I made ramps, had no idea how to add props to the maps, neither environment entity, I spammed light in every bit of the map. I took a break from hammer because I was trash, then I made this map on paint and tried to make it on hammer, back then there was no hammer++ and I had a PC that couldn't even open CSGO, so I had to compile 4K numportals everytime, about 8 hours of compile not kidding, it took a day to compile. send it to my friend for him to test it, it had about 25 different versions then I got a better PC and worked in this map for the whole year. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2369403166

SuperVGA

My first map for an FPS was a modification of Wolf3D's E1M1. I remember clearly, because all of a sudden there was a big room connected to the original map. MAPEDIT was pretty easy to use, and screw with the existing maps. Then I started with DoomEd, and I cannot remember exactly what my first map there was, only that there were many, and I hated stairs but loved columns. I managed to make my cousin's apartment by instructions, without having seen it. That was fun. I started using BUILD for Duke3D in '98, and that was much better: sector-over sector tricks, doors and rooftops. Much fun was had, but I never did wrap my head around water sectors. I think the first map I made here was just a bunch of sloped corridors in grey stone. Then I started using Deathmatch Maker and QEd Lite Both were good, but i didn't learn vertex manipulation for a while, so I used DMM more despite QEd being more mature. It was a mess of prefabs put together with gaps. By the time I started with QEd proper (after messing with hl), I made a level set in a multi-tiered cylindrical level. I did a simple platformer-like map for Unreal tournament, and loved messing with skyboxes and mirrors in it. I only did make a few maps here though, I didn't have a lot of friends that played UT. I then began using hammer; I think it was around 2000, and my first map was an outside area with a little shed that had func_brekable glass in it. It was so cool to finally work with brushes. I made some more quake levels, but stuck with WorldCraft, eventually Valve Hammer. I then picked up TrenchBroom for making Quake stuff again, and i also fire up old hammer versions now and then. I'm just not fond of the editor for CS2. Something about the UI and frame, I suppose. I guess I'll have to deal with it eventually. My first map for CS2 was an existing example map, with some extra brushes. I'm not sure if it counts.

crashtestman

[My first (but small) map made for Half Life 1](https://youtu.be/bxODvjSNyuE?si=PO6T-_BDCSkMcNi6) It’s pretty small, I did some CSGO mapping before that one but no real finish map. [My real first map for CSGO, unfinished, and never will be](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2170319678) Now I’m trying to do some kind of Wingman Map for CS2.

HUMAgus

my first map was called "kill the metrocops" and you had to kill 3 metro cops with a revolver (and breen)

smallsynth

Currently its looking like a baseplate and a singular house wall

TheNikityKot

Sewer canals with rain and houses with trees outside

Michelle-90

Technically goldsrc mapping tutorial map. After that was level set inside of the BMRF. Since it was after the tutorial it did worked. Mostly...

Fallout76Boyoffical

sadly i lost it but i still remember it

CosmosSakura

I know the exact tutorial video.

Haunting_Hornet5203

koth_advantage. Still up on TF2Maps I think.

klasdhd

A L4D map with a oversized warehouse building that let to a (very blocky) forest area. Think I went at it for a good month before wanting to start ""proper""

Aperture465

mine was terrible and it was for portal here https://gamebanana.com/mods/464924

tredI9100

Literally just a giant plane of grass floating in the void. Didn't know that I needed to add skybox brushes.

ContactNo9992

A boring box

othersideeeee

it was a floating platform without map borders and without any info player start, pretty cool ig

Phanphanforfor

a small sewer section thing exposed to the outdoors. It had gman hiding behind a fence grate thing.

Agentti_Muumi

a box made from the default brick texture with randomly applied vertex editing exposing the void and 3 cps and an smg

Nova17Delta

thank god i learned before i first compiled anything that you cant have stuff exposed to the void so naturally, to avoid any issues ever again, i made gigantic brushes at the edges of the map to have it all sealed in

Mundialito301

It was one floor and four walls. No roof, no sky, nothing.

accountjustforfun23

First map with hammer was that I made for Portal 2, but it didnt save and it was a tutorial map for tutorials. BUT - my first map that i finished making AND posted it onto steam workshop is gm\_looproom. If you wanna check it out, [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3185309619](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3185309619) here it is.

savva61

https://gamebanana.com/mods/116023 This map, which is about to turn 10 years old. I barely remember working on it but I did remember watching old 3kliksphillip videos on hammer and binging through them. 10 years was a different era for me and I don't think young me could imagine what's in store for the future. Maybe I'll open this map again and relive some memories..

WebAdmirable8590

a brick box in gmod. i thought the info\_playstart guy looked like walter white

lumpox

This was my first map, 17 years ago: [https://gamebanana.com/mods/110547](https://gamebanana.com/mods/110547) I remember acrually hosting my own little server and having quite some fun playing it :)

Theodore_Sharpe

ctf_turbine but "better." (No skybox, leaks, a massive center with tiny corridors linking to it)

cheatcodesmag

https://youtu.be/km4XW3Rb2wA?si=F_tw0hyHQCH9vDX4 this was it, it must've taken me a long time and similarly as someone else already mentioned - I had no idea about the hammer units so I turned into a dwarf

Ihateazuremountain

a little cozy rectangle walled off by tall walls, in cloudy darkness by like 7pm

Confident-Outside438

https://youtu.be/LgzXDKIFeME?si=CbQ_EKBmfs3chx7F I was more advanced but I deleted it by cleaning my PC, now the only thing left is this video 😐

TinyDeskEngineer06

My first map was a TF2 map. It was a small Mannpower map with powerups sprinkled about, and when I made it I had absolutely no clue how to properly scale my maps, so it was 10 times bigger than it needed to be, and the spawn doors (which weren't filtered to either team or had any kind of spawn protection whatsoever) could probably fit a cargo ship.

Circle.

_The_Dash_

A room with a fridge.

uppedtrout

like that

Fearless_Kiwi_8528

oh boy was it rough, it had a skybox, but didn't have any environmental lighting, looking back on it the whole thing was a complete eyesore.

DropsOfMars

I never finished it but it was going to be a one to one recreation of the Goth house from The Sims 1 as a L4D2 survival map. Don't know if I'll ever try to again

Rileyfindsthingsfuni

My first was just a stone base plate and 3 blocky buildings similar to yours, and a random male 07 in there(I might have a screen shot of a machinima I made a while ago)

Rileyfindsthingsfuni

Got the link (https://imgur.com/a/TVlnmik)

Brickhead16

it was like 100 feet each direction, had gigantic brick walls and I think window texture? It had a 2D skybox texture (Not the tools/skybox texture mind you, but just the image of a sky) a little box office box and some movie posters that used Garry's Mod DarkRP add-on textures cause why not? I wondered why there was a leak not knowing it had no skybox lol. That was 12-13 years ago but may still be on my old pc somewhere.

Ok-Historian-7731

I made my house

EurikaDude

Mine was some kinda yard and a couple of weird looking buildings stuffed with vehicle props, the skybox was the wrong way too

iitzRayD

My first map was made for a Prop-Hunt server called Lobster Build almost 10 years ago. [https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=347201868](https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=347201868)

Zyrador

I didn't even know how to change the grid size, so everything was just massive blocks.

apchistuz

brick texture platform in the void

GMRITHERANDSCARBAGE
