I also just noticed that the amount of the gap changes as I turn the base.
Got the same, contacted Hermann Miller, and decided to return the chair and order a new one (because they said it is in the tolerance range). This is now better.
I’m glad i found this post. i’ve had my embody for nearly a year and i’ve had a hunch that it’s crooked for almost the entire time. did you ever find a solution to this?
Some pictures would help, mine just got a bit looser over time but not out of alignment.

Seems pretty bad, are you sure wire not the wheels?
I had assumed the cylinder wasn't installed plumb, but I'm not sure. Are you thinking some of the wheels aren't seated fully into the housing?

Send it back and let them send you a new one.. don't even try to fix it IMO
