McSheeples

I usually wear seam free boy shorts, they're soft and don't cause any issues.

CozJeez85

Thanks, I'll have a look for some.

RainInTheWoods

Look for tech or wool fabric, not cotton.

SubjectOrange

I wear seamless running panties from under armour or new balance as well. They are a little lighter on the wallet than full merino wool undies and great for day hikes or running. Fully support wool for multi days but long distance running causes chafing as often as hiking so the "technical" thought put into them is good too!

rahnster_wright

I need to switch to boy shorts. My butt cheeks chafe on long, sweaty hikes.

McSheeples

I live in them, they can't ride up, they cover everything and don't leave visible lines. Also, I feel a little bit like I have a superman costume on under my clothes...

sluttymctits10

Not sure what you're currently using, but I've seen multiple people swear by merino wool undies as the way to go, so that may be worth looking into. Many common athletic brands like Nike, Reebok, Under Armour, etc. make moisture-wicking/"second skin" undergarments, so that may be more your style if you're sweaty like me. You may want to check out longer boy short or boxer-brief styles, too.

ValleySparkles

My hiking underwear is all merino - it will definitely perform better than cotton. Also the fit of your pants - make sure they're not too tight or bunching or riding up.

tee2green

Exofficio mesh

PuffPipe

I swear by these

wyrd_sasster

yes! especially if you're hiking somewhere hot or if you'll be out for awhile; best i've ever used

-UnicornFart

Commando. What you are describing is like my worst nightmare scenario that I will avoid at all costs lol.

skipow

you might look into chaffing creams.

CozJeez85

It's not skin to skin though, so I wondered if that would make a difference? Its clothing to skin that has caused the damage.

ewgrossdayhikes

Gonna second this. Used to work as a wildland firefighter and used Body Glide on skin to skin areas and Vaseline where my pants and pack straps would tear me up. Edit, coming from another dude. Also to add that some of the women I know putting in hella miles just use lined running shorts or go commando.

Lizcervantes88

I just got a chafing stick. It is awesome!

No_Blacksmith2847

Doesn't matter. Soldiers use stuff like vaseline to stop chaffing, I'm sure it'll work for you. Coat that part of the fabric which rubs, with a generous amount of vaseline or similar. Do likewise with the skin area that's chaffing as it'll lock in the skins natural emollients and keep moisture away from the skin. This stuff has been a staple in the soldiers med kit since WW1...

skipow

I would think that fabric to skin is harsher...i would try it.

Tiny_European

Before his ultramarathon runs, my bf covers senstitive areas (nipples, downstairs areas, seams of shirt and shorts, etc) in vaseline to stop clothes-to-skin chafing, might be worth a try. Or try a different style of underwear - I mostly wear thongs which aren't sexy but minimise contact, if that makes sense

Clovespumpkin_

Not sure if this has been mentioned but deodorant is excellent for preventing chaffing. I use it for skin on skin and skin on fabric

historian2010

Are you comfortable going commando? I don't wear underwear when I hike, but I can't imagine not wearing underwear with my regular non-hiking clothes.

jlt131

Oh man I'd have the opposite feelings! I'd rather be commando at home than while hiking.

historian2010

That's so funny! Everyone has their own relationship with underwear!

Tony_Barker

Commando đź’Żđź’Ż

Fickle_Collection355

Same!

SinfullySinatra

I absolutely swear by Monistat anti-chafe gel. I use it on my thunder thighs and haven’t had the need to but it on my bum but I don’t doubt it would be just as effective. It’s hard to find and comes in a tiny tube but you only need a small amount and it lasts all day.

MeanSecurity

That stuff is awesome!!

Fickle_Collection355

I just wear lululemon leggings/spandex short and don’t wear underwear. Or I wear their shorts that have underwear them built in. Also they sell products at sephora for chaffing that I’ve heard work well. Maybe first aide beauty or some similar brand?

Froggienp

Ummmm I wear workout leggings w/out undies

flamingmaiden

The most comfortable option, IMO! I'm in the southeastern US, and if it's not your own sweat making things chaffed, it's the humidity. A great pair of workout leggings sans undies is đź’Ż where it's at.

Pomdog17

Patagonia makes nice ones that don’t chaff.

Away-Caterpillar-176

I've never had this issue. I try to stick to cotton but sometimes I do the synthetic no-show ones. What kind of underwear are you wearing?

wiggles105

The synthetic no-shows are my secret weapon. It’s basically impossible for them to chafe. If it were a multi-day hike I’d worry more about the habitat I could be creating in there with consecutive days of synthetic trapping the vag, but for a single-day hike, they’re awesome.

CozJeez85

They were cotton low rise shorts. No fancy lacy bits. But they just rubbed away at my upper inner thigh like mad.

likeahike

They're making boxers for women and the bamboo ones are really good and comfy. No chafing whatsoever. Just Google them and you'll find plenty options.

CozJeez85

Oooh, I have bamboo socks and they are the softest thing I've ever worn. I will definitely look into this. Thanks.

Top-Manufacturer9226

Seconding bamboo!

ObiSyrupJazzlike

Anti-perspirant on your inner thighs. Alternatively, wear long enough underwear, so there's no friction of skin against skin.

owlybee

U.K. based and wear either “runderwear” (that’s the brand) or merino wool pants from decathlon (decathlon runs small so size up). No chafing since I switched away from cotton. You need something to wick away sweat to avoid the chafing. Make sure your shorts or trousers are breathable too. I also find talcum powder can help if it’s really hot.

Busy-Feeling-1413

Gold Bond Friction defense looks like solid deodorant but is a skin protector—you rub it on your thighs or wherever needed. Also recommend bike-shorts style underwear/knickers.

raeofsadness

second the gold bond! I regularly hike for work and i used to get bad chafing, but i found this stuff and I put it on my thighs, butt, and under my boobs and it hasn't failed me yet

lfergy

GoldBond is like adding a layer of silk between your skin & the irritant. True life saver for my thighs.

Clickdummy

I use chaffing cream used for running. It helps a lot.

jlt131

7" or 9" legs on a brief type undies can work, but I usually just wear my regular ones, cotton, just make sure the elastic part isn't positioned weirdly in the underparts. I get more chafing from my choice of pants than I do from my undies. I keep getting instagram ads for non-chafe undies and I finally decided to order a pair to try out, but they haven't arrived yet.

GodsHumbleClown

I just wear boxers pretty much all the time, not just when hiking.

SteevDangerous

The key is long legs as they're less likely to ride up and chafe. The longer they are the better they grip. StepOne pants are fantastic (but pricey). I'm a bloke, but they were recommended to me by a female friend who also swears by them.

CraftFamiliar5243

I finally bought Ex Officio briefs. I did a hike on a hot day this week and my lady bits were much happier because they weren't suffocated.

svidrod

Gold bond

thesneakymonkey

Women’s boxer shorts and body glide

sn315on

I use Aquaphor for hikes and when I run. It helps everywhere.

TonightAdventurous76

Wow!!! 17 miles is quite impressive. Ok, have you tried leggings or spandex biker shorts? I usually do leggings but I’ll be honest I wear grandma knickers they cover the whole bottom and I never have a problem.. but is it your thigh area?!?

CozJeez85

Thanks. I'm in training for a 26miler. It's where the back of the gusset is, I was wearing low rise shorts. I might try a bigger knicker.

BroncosAvalanche

Go comando...

lfergy

Gold Bond is a life saver

fireandice9710

I wear leggings without undies 🤣🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

witchycommunism

I buy men’s boxers that are moisture wicking. Also anti perspirant helps too!

Fish_Beholder

Yeah, I'm a trans guy so I started wearing boxer briefs a few years ago and they're so incredibly comfy! Especially for sweaty hiking thighs.

witchycommunism

I'm nonbinary lol! I started wearing them because I was feeling like they were more gender neutral and then I was like dang I should have switched a longggg time ago.

3rdthrow

I’ve not had this problem on long hikes and had no idea it was such a widespread problem.

Other_Dimension_89

I thought I could give an opinion until I read “17mile hike” and I’ve never done a hike that far to know what I’m talking about

CozJeez85

It was surprisingly easy to go that distance, other than the vicious chaffing.

begaldroft

I wear a skirt and no underwear. Makes it easy to pee. I sew elastic into a summer Buff and wear it on one leg to avoid thigh chaffing.

spaceykaleidoscope

I just wear thongs or go commando

RedditNorse

As a male hiker I can not answer directly, but my ex used to steal my boxers when we where going hiking together, no matter if it was only a day hike or a week hike. She said that it would not give her any chafing.

CozJeez85

Ok noted. I too shall steal your boxers. Thank you.

RedditNorse

Haha! As long as you are not that girl who shows up wearing the smallest thong in the universe, for hiking... And yes I had female recruits in the military that had to ask to talk to me after a short while on a march... And admitting that they did not wear the issued underwear.. But a thong..and suddenly regretting it 🤦

CozJeez85

I can confirm I did not wear a thong, that would be like cheese wire to my bum cheeks.

LittleTatoCakes

I wear ExOfficio for hiking. They’re comfy and have a lot of styles.

maybenomaybe

I swear by Icebreaker merino.

anthro4ME

Spanx mid-thigh shorts.

Alien_P3rsp3ktiv

Quick-drying underwear for runners

bondcliff

Just leave the underwear at home.

whitedragon551

My wife uses something called thigh savers.

wolfsmanning08

Depends on the pants for sure. If I'm wearing leggings or bike shorts, I just wear a thong. If I'm wearing looser shorts, something like Innersy Modal Underwear.

GlitterBlood773

I know this isn’t quite the suggestion you’re looking for, it might help. I love boxer briefs from TomboyX as long as my thighs are on the slimmer season. They are great for fall and winter. If you find Y front men’s boxer briefs in a moisture wicking material, I’d give them a try. I don’t know if any brands who make these fitted to our bodies. I LOVE Chamois Butt’r for my thighs in the spring and summer. MUCH better than Body Glide because it’s smooth and creamy upon application. I found Body Glide much stiffer to apply. Cyclists are Butt’r fans. Hoping for find relief!!

debmonsterny

I use [Knix Thigh-saver underwear.](https://knix.com/products/thigh-saver-warm-sand?variant=40087216816201&Size=M&g_acctid=407-438-6940&g_adgroupid=&g_adid=&g_adtype=none&g_campaign=US_CoreBrand_PMax_BRN_NewCust&g_campaignid=18085746872&g_keyword=&g_keywordid=&g_network=x&no_rule=true&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7NmzBhBLEiwAxrHQ-UA2vaB3R8L46w_tdJlbHjr_qI37nQzxFW9T6np2btDFPKutrFS2-hoCC5oQAvD_BwE) Lightweight and dries fast if you do multi-day hikes. I also recommend Gold Bond.

CharacterLimit7474

Body glide or even deodorant. Merino wool undies. Or wear leggings and go commando (my typical solution.)

sabijoli

i wear lightweight merino wool bikinis without incident.

Strong_Muffin_0202

Megababe

CozJeez85

Well, thanks, you're not too bad yourself...

Pickled_Popcorn

This only happens to me with knix period underwear. Try a different type of underwear

BellaBlue06

Soft bamboo underwear. I’m sensitive to tight and scratchy seams

KamillyBadilly

Gold Bond or Lume

Acottrill1

You can’t chafe if you don’t wear any! I wear lululemon hikers and yiu don’t need the knickers …. No chafing ever!

MrD-88

I'm a man and I wear what are basically lycra boxers for hiking and running, wear them for work during the summer months too.

macaronipies

I always wear my normal M&S multipack undies and they do me just fine. on the other hand, my friend finds them uncomfortable. She just bought some decathlon running knickers (cost about 6 quid) and says they're great for hiking

Adulterated_chimera

I like skims or commando - I’d look into the cut as well? Personally I find the thongs with like one inch sides chafe less than a more traditional cut of underwear, but some of it will be down to body/ booty shape. Edit: the brand commando, not going commando

bawlsacz

For day hiking, I always go commando with leggings. I have a few pairs of Lulus that fit air-tight and literally feel like my own skin. It gives me such a sense of freedom and empowerment cuz it feels like I’m walking around completely naked down there.

dragonstone13

I like boxer briefs.

Annual-Ad2603

LOTION! seriously, I grew up in the south where it’s hot year round and lotion is the only thing I’ve found that stops the chub rub.

ChangeIntrepid7935

use body glide, a runners key tool to prevent chafing and blisters. The men's version is fine, dont get duped to spending more for the "women's" version which is smaller, has a pink cap, and costs more. The OG blue body glide is perfect.

on_holdunderu5437

Pee in it, then hike, peel them off, give to me
