Tbf Slug has a lot of accolades imo. Can make good music, good lyrics, has battle rap experience, can freestyle off the cranium, been holding down the underground for a long time. Dude's a legend.
The chorus of it's all sunshine is the only time I've really gotten into his flow ever
that said he has a few good songs, but I mostly attribute that to the fact that Ant is incredible and he sometimes rhymes with dope emcees
slug had a sick verse on that track where he goes 'back in 89 I would've tagged my name up on your window frame'
Is a chorus really a ‘flow’ though. The chorus is really just the hook, and in that track, he’s just repeating the same line over and again (I love that track, but the chorus is catchy, not complex).
Slug is usually the best rapper on any track that features multiple emcees, imo.
Glad I was able to put you on. His opening verse on "Breath of Fresh" 🤌 [Dynospectrum - Breath of Fresh](https://youtu.be/yiR1Zzli5GI?si=G8cMpRvihs96F4qu)
I can get behind that. GhostFace definitely has the better catalog and is a better artist. However I can understand Deck being a better rapper especially when looking at the Wu Tang albums instead of solo albums.
He does. But don't forget that Socrates, philosophies, and hypothises, cant define how he be dropping these, mockeries, so that he can lyrically perform armed robberies.
I love the Genius. Liquid Swords is my favorite HH album ever. And even I discredit the rest of his catalogue. I recently revisited Beneath the Surface and Legend … and each of those albums is full of greatness. I always loved Grandmasters too, so no surprise there. Pro Tools is his “worst” album but it’s still good. Words from The Genius is just a fun bonus record imo.
>Words from The Genius
It's an interesting one because it's from before 36 Chambers was released, which more or less single-handedly changed the production paradigm of the East coast from what might be considered "old school" and kicked off what is thought of as the "golden age" from '93-'00(ish, maybe goes as late as '03-4).
All of which is to say - it's Wu before Wu sounded like Wu, which is interesting to listen to.
Hot damn this is basically my list:
Aesop, MF, Thought, I'd throw GZA on there and I dunno about #5 ....possibly JID just because I've been fucking with him a lot lately. First 4 are pretty set though
Most people don’t know him. Most big rappers don’t want to know him. I think he’s the most underrated ever.
You scrolled a long way down, didn’t you? I tried finding Crook and Iso, but couldn’t find them, so I commented this.
Excellent list. This is my personal list. I tried to factor in lyricism and skill (possibly most important thing) as well as personal preference, enjoyability and discography. In no particular order
Rakim
Tech N9ne
Eminem (the old stuff)
Kurupt
Redman
Honorable mention to Project Pat
Fr. And thank you. I think because they don't rap real fast is one reason. Also a lot of folks, especially in the sub, consider NY boom bap to be the epitome of hip hop.
The South got it's best mainstream exposure in the 2000s.
The younger kids aren't checking for that type of sound either
I would said Three 6 possibly too but they're a group not an individual
I'm an oldhead and former elitist who basically was that guy. Now that I'm more seasoned, I've become a late convert to the awesomeness of Memphis rap and Southern rap in general. Good music is good music.
Aiyyo, we comin' through with the fifth and glock, rippin' shots
And hittin' blocks, leavin' kids rocked, put in a hidden box
Splittin' tops, leave his face hot, dotted like chickenpox
Cursin' cops with bloodhounds, sniffin' socks, sniffin rocks
Pharoahe Monch
Black Thought
Eminem
Ghostface
Since for some reason you left Jay off your requirements, I’m going to skip him because it’d be too easy and put Doom instead. Boom.
Kendrick, MF Doom, JID, Mac Miller, Tyler the Creator. Idc about the same old answers from old heads. New school gets slept on in this discussions cuz people just wanna be right. These 5 give me the most joy, the most replay value for me, someone born in 98. I wasn't around or old enough to appreciate the traditional answers.
3k, black thought, pharoahe monch, Redman…..the last slot can rotate between Kendrick, Conway, Common, MF Doom, Pun & Sean P….
I would normally have Nas in there….no way biggie makes the top 10 list
**Rakim, Black Thought, KRS, Eminem, MF Doom** Honourable Mentions: GFK, Pharaohe Monch, Big Daddy Kane, Big L
If we putting KRS and Rakim, I think Kool g deserves spot there too
I don't disagree. In fact, I probably enjoy G Rap more that Big Daddy Kane but, objectively, I have to go with Kane.
This. This is the correct response. If we’re including groups though I’d say Sugar Hill Gang, Wu-Tang Clan, Terror Squad, OutKast and NWA.
Bone Thugs N Harmony would like a word.
Oh yeah should’ve included them.
HUGE credit to you for saying KRS
all caps when you spell the man’s name
I would be nervous with a gun to my head: 1) 2pac 2) biggie 3) Nas. … Am i ded?
Bro died 3 times 💀
Ice Cube Andre Nickatina Eminem Big L Mac Dre Honorable Mention goes to Soulja Slim
Nickatina is so good
Dylan Dylan Dylan Dylan Dylan I spit hot fiya
this is the best answer considering the "gun to the head" stipulation
Gun to your head? Let’s keep it a hundo… It’s the only answer.
Now cross the Brooklyn Bridge and get me a piece of cheese cake!
“You choked out a legend!”
Came here to say this 😅
🤣
Damnit you beat me to it lmao
My man was on that pure Cambodian breast milk
Rakim Kendrick MF DOOM Jay-Z Eminem
I see a lot of MF but admittedly I’ve never listened to him
Look how many times he is mentioned in these lists. You need to remedy that.
Listen to Madvillainy and MM FOOD
You’re missing out, he changes your whole perspective on rap
How so? I’ve only listened to a few of his songs
You will soon learn he's one of your heroes. He's one of mine. Rapper/Producer.
He’s everyone’s hero. And yet he’s a villain.
Educate yo self

This is the answer
Eminem, Gift of Gab, GZA, Dres, Slug in no particular order.
+ for gift of gab
slug? wow
Is slug atmosphere?
Tbf Slug has a lot of accolades imo. Can make good music, good lyrics, has battle rap experience, can freestyle off the cranium, been holding down the underground for a long time. Dude's a legend.
well said. Sluggo deserves respect. Bro been grinding.
Atmosphere is a duo, Slug the rapper and Ant the producer.
ant is Hella dope
Mans a legend
I think that he’s a good lyricist and storyteller. He admittedly doesn’t have the best flow, but he still stands out for me.
His flow is slick and has changed over time. His choruses are the only thing that has ever lacked, imo, though those have improved too.
The chorus of it's all sunshine is the only time I've really gotten into his flow ever that said he has a few good songs, but I mostly attribute that to the fact that Ant is incredible and he sometimes rhymes with dope emcees slug had a sick verse on that track where he goes 'back in 89 I would've tagged my name up on your window frame'

Slug is fly af
Slug is dope. Dynospectrum and Deep Puddle really show how he could be a top 5 for sure.
Damn, I've been a Slug fan for almost 20 years, and I've never heard of Dynospectrum, thanks for that! Man has a ridiculous discography.
Glad I was able to put you on. His opening verse on "Breath of Fresh" 🤌 [Dynospectrum - Breath of Fresh](https://youtu.be/yiR1Zzli5GI?si=G8cMpRvihs96F4qu)
Dynospectrum is great for rolling around the back streets of Minneapolis on a cold Minnesota night. It’s got an eerie vibe almost.
Couldn't have said it better.
+1 for Slug

I can get behind that. GhostFace definitely has the better catalog and is a better artist. However I can understand Deck being a better rapper especially when looking at the Wu Tang albums instead of solo albums.

Yeah I feel like some days I might have one favorite from them and some days I have another! They’re all good
ghostface is better than deck imo
That’s tough because deck bombs atomically
He does. But don't forget that Socrates, philosophies, and hypothises, cant define how he be dropping these, mockeries, so that he can lyrically perform armed robberies.
GZA over both

No Drake in these top 5s but plenty of Kendrick. Interesting.
I’ve literally never heard Drake mentioned in a top 5 outside of the internet. Granted I’m older.
