People need to realise opinions are subjective, and someone consider x artist as better than another is entirely their opinion. There is literally no right or wrong answer, haha.
I prefer big pun cuase he’s more diverse and leagues more technical. Not to say big L ain’t good (I’ve listened to both his albums, they’re really good) or that I’m a technical elitist, just that the shit pun does is nuts.
Biggie is one of my all time faves and one of the very most important figures in hip hop history, but I dont think I could get behind saying biggie would be top 15 all-time in pure rap skill. There’s quite a few people I could see out-rapping him, the greatness of Biggie is severely elevated by his character and everything surrounding his life outside of specifically his rapping. It did help that he was the man.
Doesn’t mean he isn’t a super respectable GOAT choice though. Just saying it all depends on what someone bases their list on.
I understand he’s a god, but I don’t think he’s better than those other rappers. Kinda the same problem with guru, both their flows are incredible and their voices sound incredible, but the actual content is lacking.
Big pun had incredible breath control. Some of his lines leave me stunned. Little did we know we was middle manned by 2 middle men who didn’t do diddly (yeah i probably butchered that but you know the line 😆)
Punching in rapping is when your verse consists of multiple recording takes attached together. For big pun's songs you can tell some the vocals almost overlap sometimes, or appear a little louder like background vocals would. I don't know how often it is, you can also hear him breathing so I'm not sure. Maybe he just punches the last word for effect?
One example of punching is "The Way I Am" by Eminem. On that first verse: "I sit **back** with this **pack** of zig **zags**". You can hear the last word louder, because I believe each one of those last words is from an entirely different take, to emphasize the last rhyme hitting on the kick. It sounds cooler but if it's done for the sake of hiding your rap skill and breathing technique, it can be an issue.
I also heard that the official rap god fast part is consisted of two recordings in between but can't confirm. He does perform those verses live though. I don't know any other rap examples of punching.
That's because he had incredible breath control. Hearing the breaths doesn't mean anything except that he wasn't a studio rapper using punch-ins. He could actually spit his shit and it wasn't studio magic.
Ok, are we saying big like fat or big like the word. Cause Big Daddy Kane is dope but he ain’t got the sugars and shit. Fat rappers: Heavy D held it down, Gift of Gab and Big Pun on that list for me. Rappers with “Big” in their name: Big Daddy Kane, Big Boi, Big Pun, and Big Mike.
Killer Mike would be on mine. Sometimes I think of him more as just “solid” built, then I see a pic of him without a jacket. As a life long big dude myself I always keep track of who is fat and doing the damn thing.
If you’re asking the next best rapper with “Big” in his name, then I’ll go Big L. If you’re asking for the next best morbidly obese rapper then probably Big Pun
I like Pun for his versatility. Was able to create very complex rhyme patterns, had a great flow, could tell the occasional story or speak out on a political issue. And had some of the funniest sktits lol. Unfortunate he didn’t live long enough to release more music. Also wish he had been a much better person towards his family members especially his wife.
Are are we talking Big as in the name, or Big as in fat?
If we're talking as in the name:
Big Daddy Kane
Then probably Big L
Big Pun
And then Big KRIT
Followed by Big Boi
BDK number one though
If we're talking Big as in fat that's a whole nother conversation
I don’t think biggie was the best “big” rapper at all. To me big pun, big l, big boi and especially big daddy Kane are better rappers, biggie is just more popular and I guess got a more compelling story associated with him and a bigger part of hiphop mythology. Heavy d was also a heavyweight (no pun intended)
Fun fact: in Brooklyn, Biggie, Craig Mack and Big L were on tour. Biggie was on stage, and the crowd booed him off chanting “We Want L, We Want L” … referring to L of course… NO DISRESPECT to Biggie but I have a feeling a lot of people don’t have friends from the area during that time and know this story, and it just goes to show you how BIG Big L really was.. people were expecting him to be the bigger than anyone else … he was that nice… truth … 1
Hear people compare themselves to big a lot
You know B.I.G. and Pac, you know to get it hot
I guess after I live I wanna be compared to BIG Anyone,
Big Pun, Big L or Notorious
Big Pun arguably the best Latin rapper to master the flow, some say he was blacker than coal.
Big L, short lived but damn did he shine bright and Ebonics taught a generation of (suburban) kids how to speak with criminal slang.
Big KRIT, Big L, Big Pun, Big Daddy Kane, Big Boi
Add Big Boi, fat Joe, Big daddy Kane and we can just close the thread.
Please take my hip hop fan card away, I can’t believe I forgot them. 🤦🏾
& the Big Tymers
Don't forget the bog Tymers
Big Sean
Big pun is the Big I have highest on my all time list (15) then Big daddy Kane (17) then Bigboi (18) then Biggie(19)
Lets see the list because biggie at 19 is way too low.
I love Big, but him being at 19 is not that wild of a take.
Thank you bro, finally someone in this thread respecting my opinion
People need to realise opinions are subjective, and someone consider x artist as better than another is entirely their opinion. There is literally no right or wrong answer, haha.
I put it up in this thread.
You forgot Big L. The greatest.
Bit of a one trick wonder, I have him 25th all time
Big Pun over Big L is wild. Especially if you’re gonna claim one trick pony.
I prefer big pun cuase he’s more diverse and leagues more technical. Not to say big L ain’t good (I’ve listened to both his albums, they’re really good) or that I’m a technical elitist, just that the shit pun does is nuts.
How the fuck you gonna have Biggie at 19 bro, your list is a disgrace
Biggie is one of my all time faves and one of the very most important figures in hip hop history, but I dont think I could get behind saying biggie would be top 15 all-time in pure rap skill. There’s quite a few people I could see out-rapping him, the greatness of Biggie is severely elevated by his character and everything surrounding his life outside of specifically his rapping. Guru said himself it’s mostly the voice
Yeah, that’s what I’m saying
That’s a lot of firepower. I can see why the switch to Lil happened.
Large Professor
Big Boi, Big Mike and Large Professor
lol Sneaking in Large Pro.
Big pun had incredible breath control. Some of his lines leave me stunned. Little did we know we was middle manned by 2 middle men who didn’t do diddly (yeah i probably butchered that but you know the line 😆)
dead in the middle of little italy little did we know that we riddled some middleman who didn’t do diddly or something like that
One of the best all time lines
Iconic
I need receipts for this. I've been told he punched in for stuff.
Never heard he punched in. I do know at the end he was lying down in bed with the mic right there to record next to his bed
Punched in?
Punching in rapping is when your verse consists of multiple recording takes attached together. Yeah but he still was breathing mad heavy on his albums
Big Pun's breath control was bad. That's like his most obvious issue.
I don't know about that. You can hear his heavy breathing all over Capital Punishment.
That's because he had incredible breath control. Hearing the breaths doesn't mean anything except that he wasn't a studio rapper using punch-ins. He could actually spit his shit and it wasn't studio magic.
Pun punched in a lot and you can always hear him breathing between bars. He lost some of his breath control as his health diminished.
If we mean large dudes then Killer Mike has to be in the conversation
Killer Mike would be on mine. Sometimes I think of him more as just “solid” built, then I see a pic of him without a jacket. As a life long big dude myself I always keep track of who is fat and doing the damn thing.
Yeah he wears the weight well but he's big big
Fat pat anyone?
Hell yeah
Rick Ross gotta be on the list just based on size
He used to be…. It’s sad. Dudes on his way to Al Roker country he keep on like that

I don’t think biggie was the best “big” rapper at all. To me big pun, big l, big boi and especially big daddy Kane are better rappers, biggie is just more popular and I guess got a more compelling story associated with him and a bigger part of hiphop mythology.
