No Paul, you're supposed to assert dominance by not telling your players when they will be making their debuts so their families won't know either and after the game you belittle them infront of the media
Go the extra mile and tell them they are playing and let them buy 20 tickets for all their friends and family but then tell them you changed your mind a half hour before puck drop while their family is already in the building to truly emulate Babcock
i'll never ever be able to get over healthy scratching a player right before their first game with their whole family there. Was it babcock that did it or am i just projecting that onto him?
Chelios at the outdoor game Holland and Mike illich(?)(owner)Wanted him to play.. Babcock wanted to healthy scratch him. So Babcock benched him after one shift. Chelios got trainers to get his son's to buy him beer chelly was hammered by the 3rd period. Babcock wanted him to play a shift chelly told Babs to fuck off. Their relationship had already been wrecked earlier i.e Modano etc. Babs was never going to be re-signed in Detroit or in Edmonton.
Spezza didn't do anything, Dubas did.
Babcock wanted a shutdown, penalty killing, grinding 4C. Dubas pulled rank and signed Spezza instead. Babcock was making the point that the lineup was his decision.
It's probably worth calling out that Spezza was one of the best 4Cs in the league, did a great job of driving possession, was a great locker room presence, and massively outperformed his contract.
No one should EVER forget Rick Bowness for that shit. Always thought very highly of him as a coach until I heard the way he embarrassed that kid. Fuck this guy, never forget.
He was a rookie on the Stars who was from Minnesota and was told he would be in the lineup playing against the Wild in Minnesota, so he spent a ton of money on tickets for his whole family to come see him play (teammates even chipped in to help after he ran out of money). Bowness then changed his mind and scratched him an hour before game time.
Blashill did that to Dennis Cholowski the first time he would have played in Vancouver (where he's from).
Cholowski wasn't playing great and needed a healthy scratch at some point to reset, but damn pick a different game
That screams "I need to send a bigger message" though. Like, maybe not only was he not playing great but also he wasn't putting in the work and needed more than just a healthy scratch to kick his ass into gear.
Should force the rookies to spill dirt on teammates, promise them you won’t share what they say, then share it anyways. Maybe make players scroll through their pictures on their cell phones too.
Babcock gets such a bad rep when, in reality, he’s an alpha male who understands how to win at both life and hockey. You think Eddie Shore didn’t push around rookies, fuck with players’ families (mentally and financially) to build character, or look through players’ cell phones? You do whatever it takes.
>Maybe make players scroll through their pictures on their cell phones too
what about not being a bitch and just scrolling through their photos yourself? way more coach-like and manly
Fair. Babs isn’t perfect, and I’m sure he’ll learn from this mistake. Hopefully he doesn’t publicly admit it, though. Alpha males should never admit wrongdoing.
>Babcock gets such a bad rep when, in reality, he’s an alpha male who understands how to win at both life and hockey.
Eddie Shore and Babcock come from 2 different eras.
The huge difference with Babcock is he continued with his bullshit when it's no longer tolerated. If Eddie Shore was doing it he was doing it during the 30-70s it was something that was tolerated and accepted during a time mental health didn't matter and it was just about "sucking it up".
Not to mention there is a plethora of players and coaches who have won and life and hockey with the nonsense "alpha male" approach.
That one really broke me. Modano, Spezza, were classless as fuck. But that comment was just mean spirited.
How many games did you play in the NHL you fucking loser.
> Don't forget to look through their phones too.
Incoming rant...
Wouldn't it be illegal for an employer to demand to look through your personal phone? There's an obvious imbalance in abuse of authority. I've yet to hear of even one of these kids having the nerve to refuse. And I'm willing to bet Babcock saw a few nsfw pics of the players, and/or their gf. What if one of these kids are less than straight? Imagine how Babcock would react to seeing a player holding his boyfriend's hand...
There's gotta be a bucket full of criminal conduct in Babcock. I'd love to see a reporter look into the criminal angle.
Coaches have gotten too soft! Back in my day they'd ask to look through your photos to know what kind of guy you were! I've had enough of the PC woke bullshit! /s ofc
These quotes imply some sort of self reflection, which is required to adapt and adjust to changing environments.
A stark contrast to compare to a coach that refers to themself in third person and gets a last shot in the league and yet hasn't seemed to change at all.
People hated this hire until about Game 6 of the first round. I remember the thread that Panthers fans were pissed they made the playoffs because that meant another year of Maurice.
It's true, we looked like a shell of our President's Trophy team under PoMo and none of us felt like he was the answer. He just kept talking about playing "playoff hockey" while we were well outside the playoffs. Then, we magically came alive to end the season, and saw what PoMo puck was all about.
Still do, I have zero faith the Panthers will win anything with him at the helm. He's never had an issue being a good wordsmith, it's coaching winning hockey that has eluded him for damn near 30 years.
He has that perspective of getting so close to the NHL and not making it. He knows as much as anyone what that is worth. Some of the best coaches are cut from that cloth.
One of the few from that era that didn't age badly either.
I tried re-watching How I Met Your Mother, and while I will always love the show, it did not age well whatsoever.
I'd argue S4 is mostly bad and the later seasons are kind of weird/uneven, but the show has aged pretty well overall. It was one of the last big network sitcoms to launch as streaming kind of killed the mid-week sitcom format, and I think it shows throughout the show's run. HIMYM feels like a product of the mid 2000s, even if it ran well into the 2010s.
With that said, the first couple seasons are starting to feel like a time capsule for sure. I'm getting old.
I think it aged poorly because of how much TV comedy was changing and streaming rising at the same time. It’s kind of the last big TV sitcom of that style, and anyone used to the newer comedies will find it hard to watch. Even Big Bang Theory or Two and Half Men mostly had staying power at the end with boomers, which wasn’t HIMYM’s demographic. I don’t think it’s any less funny, but it’s much slower and takes way longer for the plot to develop compared to shows like Barry or Modern Family. Parks and Rec, the Office, Modern Family, and Community all have a style that is much more palatable today. The multi-camera format with a laugh track in general now feels incredibly dated. Big Bang Theory feels closer to The Honeymooners than it does anything that came out around its last season. I’d wager the majority of popular TV comedies today and especially the finished ones that are really popular to stream are single camera.
Sutter is nothing like Torts.
Torts very openly and demonstratively cares about his players. But he also cares about winning and he won't tolerate players who aren't committed.
Sutter is a grumpy old douche who uses mind games to motivate his players into... something.
I don’t think so. I think Torts just expects so much from his players. And he’ll let them no in no uncertain terms if they’re not meeting those expectations. Honestly I’ve always responded well to that kind of leadership and would love to play for Torts, if I could play hockey
When pissed he's horrific to be around, and that happens kinda easily. A lot of people don't get to see when he's in the teach/coach/mentor mindset that he's genuinely a gruff, but nice guy to be around. He is fiercly loyal, which is what gets him loved in the locker rooms.
I remember watching some random, meaningless regular season game Tampa won once, and Cooper was still in the tunnel giving fist bumps to all his guys and I remember thinking "that's the coach I'd want to play for"
I also always loved this moment with Stamkos lol
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ganqs7D7ew8
Also when he was interviewed mid-game when Tampa was going for the three-peat (but behind) and he just shrugged it off like "eh, we've already won two, I'm coaching in the greatest league in the world, I'm happy to be here." Just seems like a chill, down-to-earth dude overall
Quotes like this make me appreciate how much of this stuck with Rod after Paul Mo coached him.
Really was clear listening to Paul talk before and during the ECF last year that he’s very much focussed on getting the most out of guys but also letting them enjoy the moment.
That really is an all time great sports quote. I hope that gets remembered, seriously. That's like "Field of Dreams" quality. Just someone talking about the pure love of hockey. So humanizing and somehow relatable.
No Paul, you're supposed to assert dominance by not telling your players when they will be making their debuts so their families won't know either and after the game you belittle them infront of the media

That was all babs. Pettiness is his thing.
Welcome to Toronto, Jason Spezza! *sike*
Psych*
Psych my balls lmao
Lol got em
what did spezz even do to Babcock to deserve that? It still doesn't make sense to me to this day.
Babs doesn't need a reason to pull bullshit, it's just how he treats everyone.
Mike Modano game 1500? NOPE. Sit down. Babcock is just a giant dick to his very core.
As a lifetime Oilers fan, thank fucking Christ. And good on chelly. I'd have gotten fucking drunk and told him to fuck off too.
I think we should dress him for a shift or a couple just to get him that 1500.
Spezza didn't do anything, Dubas did. Babcock wanted a shutdown, penalty killing, grinding 4C. Dubas pulled rank and signed Spezza instead. Babcock was making the point that the lineup was his decision.
Thanks, i just wanted to understand the motive, that's all. I didn't know that part. And damn....
It's probably worth calling out that Spezza was one of the best 4Cs in the league, did a great job of driving possession, was a great locker room presence, and massively outperformed his contract.
Exist
He seems like a total psychopath. This offseason was my first time really paying attention and it's nuts what he got away with.
Babcock did that with Jason Spezza, but he wasn’t the only one - Rick Bowness did the same a couple years ago with Riley Tufte
> Rick Bowness Never won a 'ship.
No one should EVER forget Rick Bowness for that shit. Always thought very highly of him as a coach until I heard the way he embarrassed that kid. Fuck this guy, never forget.
Who is Riley Tufte
He was a rookie on the Stars who was from Minnesota and was told he would be in the lineup playing against the Wild in Minnesota, so he spent a ton of money on tickets for his whole family to come see him play (teammates even chipped in to help after he ran out of money). Bowness then changed his mind and scratched him an hour before game time.
Blashill did that to Dennis Cholowski the first time he would have played in Vancouver (where he's from). Cholowski wasn't playing great and needed a healthy scratch at some point to reset, but damn pick a different game
I remember same thing happened to Kyle Turris in his rookie year.
That screams "I need to send a bigger message" though. Like, maybe not only was he not playing great but also he wasn't putting in the work and needed more than just a healthy scratch to kick his ass into gear.
Jason Spezza’s first game as a leaf (childhood team)
It was also against Ottawa..
*squints*
Oh, piss on Eddie Shore.
Old time hockey?
Piss on old time hockey!
YER BLOWIN IT!
>Babcock gets such a bad rep when, in reality, he’s an alpha male who understands how to win at both life and hockey. Eddie Shore and Babcock come from 2 different eras. Woosh
Definitely whoosh. Too many bad takes in some threads today, had one guy feeling bad for Formenton, I took the above for being serious.
Can you hear that whooshing noise? It's the joke flying over your head.
You're late
But I got the joke
And then, 20 years from now when he's about to retire, let him hit 1499 games and then healthy scratch him for the rest of the season
“Enjoy your first game. It’ll be your last in an NHL arena”. Words of a true leader
That one really broke me. Modano, Spezza, were classless as fuck. But that comment was just mean spirited. How many games did you play in the NHL you fucking loser.
Who did he say this to again? Just awful.
Some older minor leaguer, i think on the last game of camp. With context, the sentiment was nice but the execution was terrible.
Was this Mark Stone in the preseason, or is this something entirely different?
Mike Babcock quote
Good god, I can’t believe he was even given the chance to fuck up in Columbus.
Don't forget to look through their phones too.
> Don't forget to look through their phones too. Incoming rant... Wouldn't it be illegal for an employer to demand to look through your personal phone? Nonsense, the best way to manage your rookies is to just never have them ever play in the NHL.
Make a mistake? Back to the doghouse!
Why are you playing scared!!?!?!?
Coaches have gotten too soft! Back in my day they'd ask to look through your photos to know what kind of guy you were! I've had enough of the PC woke bullshit! /s ofc
Nice babcock you got there.
PoMo always has something great to say
This is why he’s survived as long as he has over the years. He’s adapted. He may not be the best coach but he seems like someone id want as a coach.
I want him to win a cup honestly. Dude just seems like he gets it
These quotes imply some sort of self reflection, which is required to adapt and adjust to changing environments. A stark contrast to compare to a coach that refers to themself in third person and gets a last shot in the league and yet hasn't seemed to change at all.
Yeah but I want to see through your phone.
The most-human of all coaches, perhaps.
His speech to the team before the finals was amazing as well
To think I hated the hire at first too
People hated this hire until about Game 6 of the first round. I remember the thread that Panthers fans were pissed they made the playoffs because that meant another year of Maurice.

We saw this in Winnipeg. Always eloquent and thoughtful. Unfortunately, his coaching here wasn’t nearly as good as his quotations.
He has that perspective of getting so close to the NHL and not making it. He knows as much as anyone what that is worth. Some of the best coaches are cut from that cloth.
Tough guy hockey Ted Lasso
This really represents the modern coaching that we see now in the game which is actually about nurturing the players, which is good to see
You mean asking to see your gf’s nude texts isn’t a great ice breaker?
😂🤣 Not great, no
Can i please get the story for this…
Babcock probably
Babcock wanting to look through players photos on their phones
That would be Mike Babcock, legendary CBJ coach with 0 losses on his record!
Lol, reminds me of a quote from Parks and Rec. "You only get to see the second Twilight movie for the seventh time once."
god I love that show. one of the few sitcoms I can go back and watch endlessly
One of the few from that era that didn't age badly either. I tried re-watching How I Met Your Mother, and while I will always love the show, it did not age well whatsoever.
Community has aged the best imo.
it truly was streets ahead
Community is - and always will be - timeless
I want to believe that, but there is SO much pop culture referenced in that show, and an entire character is based around it.
Its the chair
All seasons or just 1-3? Wild take, I respect it.
I'd argue S4 is mostly bad and the later seasons are kind of weird/uneven, but the show has aged pretty well overall. yeahhhhh I tried watching a few episodes recently of HIMYM and it was rough
Yeah but there is a random Mason Raymond reference so that’s… something?
I thought it had one of the best final seasons, too.
I think it aged poorly because of how much TV comedy was changing and streaming rising at the same time. It’s kind of the last big TV sitcom of that style, and anyone used to the newer comedies will find it hard to watch. Makes me feel even better about not liking that show.
The contrast from this to Sutter last year talking about Pelletier's debut game is both very funny and kinda sad.
Sutter played 400 games in the NHL, Maurice just missed making it. Those guys that never got the chance understand how special it is.
Could be that, could be that Sutter is just a dick
Why not both
I think the root of his successes and his failures are both in his ability to be a huge dick. Like Torts
Sutter is nothing like Torts. Torts very openly and demonstratively cares about his players. But he also cares about winning and he won't tolerate players who aren't committed. Sutter is a grumpy old douche who uses mind games to motivate his players into... something.
Still dicks. I love torts. They are just good at negative reinforcement motivation
Is Torts even a dick like that?
I don’t think so. I think Torts just expects so much from his players. And he’ll let them no in no uncertain terms if they’re not meeting those expectations. Honestly I’ve always responded well to that kind of leadership and would love to play for Torts, if I could play hockey

Torts seem to be well.likwd.by most player no?
Sutter's a dick. And the people that loved it and passed it off as "dry humour" were annoying. Glad you guys are rid of him
I hope Sutter never coaches a game in the league ever again. He’s a fucking dinosaur and his coaching style has no place in the game.
If he wasn't so damn stubborn he'd be a great coach. Just unwilling to change at all.
Always liked Paul Maurice. Wish more coaches took his/Jon Cooper’s approach
I imagine Sully is a decent guy underneath that look that’s always on his hairy big toe of a face
Montgomery is like that. Something I think that helped the Bruins a lot last year.
it always makes me proud to hear ex lightning players talk about Cooper.
I remember watching some random, meaningless regular season game Tampa won once, and Cooper was still in the tunnel giving fist bumps to all his guys and I remember thinking "that's the coach I'd want to play for" I also always loved this moment with Stamkos lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ganqs7D7ew8 Also when he was interviewed mid-game when Tampa was going for the three-peat (but behind) and he just shrugged it off like "eh, we've already won two, I'm coaching in the greatest league in the world, I'm happy to be here." Could have the Kellan Lain debut where you get ejected 2 seconds in
Kellan Lain got stats in his first game, that's a W
NHL Record Holder for Fastest Ejection to Start a Career Kellen Lain?
Legend
Mike Babcock says fuck all of that shit
Sutter takes a dump this too.
Quotes like this make me appreciate how much of this stuck with Rod after Paul Mo coached him. Really was clear listening to Paul talk before and during the ECF last year that he’s very much focussed on getting the most out of guys but also letting them enjoy the moment.
Common PoMo W
That really is an all time great sports quote. I hope that gets remembered, seriously. That's like "Field of Dreams" quality. Just someone talking about the pure love of hockey. So humanizing and somehow relatable.
tldr; it’s your mom’s game
Great coach. Really shows what good looks like in the NHL and why Babcock has no place in the league anymore
I wish things were different from how they ended with us, Paul...
He's the Anti Babcock. This is just so lovely
Maurice has always been a great guy
Best interview in the business
I know there’s some debate on how effective he is as a coach, but Paul Maurice is definitely a charismatic guy
Wise words from a guy with a wealth of them.
That’s fucking awesome!
Beautiful
Now that’s the right way to look at it
This is hockey.
*Mike Babcock hated this.*
He's the Anti-Babcock.
My brain went straight to Kyle Turris and Wayne Gretzky.
Common Maurice W.
Crazy
Great quotation Paul
Maurice will always hold a special place in my heart as a Canes fan ❤️
Way to go Paul!
I like the trend of having coaches in the NHL that treat their players like human beings.
David Gustafsson
Effin’ A
You're only gonna play 8 minutes so I really don't care how you play.
That’s a really good mindset to have.
Absolute class act
Hmmm. Thought his heart wasn’t in it anymore.
He is the anti-Babcock.
