Vegas when there’s a new big name on the market

Vegas: “Do not try and bend the Cap—that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.” Every Other GM: “What truth?” Vegas: “There is no Cap.”
I feel like they should make an offer for Marner. They have so many young prospects and picks that they could easily afford him, give him the money he wants, and put him next to Keller.
They see a new shiny toy on the market and they must have it, picks and prospects be damned. They really want to stay stacked with big flashy names and contend for as long as possible. Quintessential Las Vegas style.
I mean it has worked out well for them.
More teams should be like Vegas, go for the win no matter the cost.
Again the ltir shit was within the rules they didn’t break it.
Vegas attitude is why they are still contending despite a revolving door of players on the roster.
Honestly tho marner to Vegas would be insane and actually break thr league
I agree I like that our team swings for the fences every year, but I'm not sure that losing Theodore, Marchessault and Thompson for Marner makes us a better team.
I don't know about that. Marchy and Theodore had 111 points combined last year with Theo only playing 47 games. Plus a big chunk of Marners points are assists to the best goal scorer in the league, I think he'd have a drop off on points especially since we're losing our best goal scorer.
He's had the same rate of points playing with Tavares instead of Matthews, so could most likely do well with any decent scorer. Vegas is much more offence by committee than the Leafs though so would be interesting to see
I mean it is Vegas they are the definition of a ruthless mob boss who does the move because it is strictly business not personal.
Forget mcdavid or makar or kuch or Igor the biggest game changer in the league right are the Vegas golden knight’s management.
They get 7 more to trade away each year, and can trade future ones if that doesn't cut it. No need for picks when you can get the players you want anyway
Could you imagine if Vegas put someone in player assistance only for them to return for the playoffs? I wouldn’t put it past them but holy shit that would be insane.
They'll get him addicted to coke and then send him to Player's Assistance for the entire season UNTIL game 82, where Marner will go down with a lower body injury (i/e the prostitute they pay to "take care of him" takes care of him a little well and his dick gets rubbed raw).
That's Vegas baby.
I mean, would they trade Stone in this instance? Normally trading a cup winning captain would be odd, but it's Vegas we're talking about.
How long does Vegas want to keep dealing with an injury riddle Stone that can't stay healthy? Especially if there are rumours swirling about the LTIR changing in the next CBA. Would Vegas trade Stone (and maybe more?) for Marner?
Honestly the league is better off with a team that makes moves like Vegas in it. They make the trade market way more entertaining to follow, even when the end up playing the villain by getting creative with LTIR.
It’s an addiction at this point, and they make these big flashy moves on a regular basis, it’s a wonder why other teams have never tried it. It took 6 years but it got them a Cup.
It would happen with a Vegas vs Toronto final culminating with Marner winning the Conn Smythe and lifting the cup in Scotia Bank Arena. The ensuing riot would be quite the spectacle.
I'm not a Leafs fan and even I know Leafs fans would give their first born child to even be in the SCF, because at least that means the team has made progress.
The Leafs literally made a feature-length movie about the 1993 team when they returned to the conference finals for the first time in a while. A finals run would be treated like six cups right now. A cup like twenty cups
Ok hear me out
- Bring Marner in
- Stone's lacerated spleen flares up beginning of season
- Marner carries regular season, puts Knights in a better seed as Stone said
- Marner gets migranes in Feb, goes on LTIR, doesn't come back
- Vegas trades for Konecny, whatever other big pending UFAs there are next year
- Stone comes back for game 1
- Lose to Stars in first round
I think I’d cry tears of joy if they got a return like that for Marner. Top pairing d-man, a goalie who has shown some great upside (while making close to minimum for another year) plus a young forward coming off a .5 PPG pace in his first real NHL season. I’d eat at Boston Pizza for a year straight if Treliving pulled that off
You know, I don't hate this as long as Korzack is ready to make the jump. I'd rather Roy than Doro so that Roy has a chance to grow tbh. That's just me being picky though.
Feels heavy from Vegas for me, but I guess it's what Theodre and thompson are seen as.
I view theodre as a legit #1d and Thompson is a bonafide starter.
But I guess if you see Theodre only as a good top 4 and Thompson as a 1b it's fair.
It would make the Leafs a much more well rounded team forsure.
Honestly Theodore is def a 1D but the way Vegas acquires players they can have Hanafin as 1D to replace him and then cycle him out in a few years as well.
The problem with Theodore is Vegas decided to go trade for Hanifin, sign him to an extension, then give him Theodore’s spot on PP1 almost immediately. With only one year left on his deal it’s very likely they wouldn’t be able to extend him afterwards.
I imagine Leafs would retain a bit on Marner for next season to balance the cap a bit more, and then the Leafs would have the money to extend Theodore afterwards. And Vegas then hopes that either Marner takes less or Stone decides to retire and then they have the space for Mitch regardless.
I could be completely wrong here, but Toronto feels like it's in "win now" mode, which means they'd want every dollar of their cap to go into active players. It'd take a crazy scenario for them to feel like they're coming out ahead while retaining a chunk of Marner's salary.
Retaining a chunk of marner's salary wouldn't be that great, but retaining something for a worthwhile return wouldn't be the end of the world. At the end of the day, it is a bargaining chip like any other asset.
The nightmare scenario which is very possible is that he walks for nothing and next year does feel like a mini retool (if you can call it that) with the amount that is coming off the books after 2025. We have traded our futures and 1st round picks for win now assets for the greater part of a decade and its an opportunity to bolster the farm a bit.
I love Stone but he hasn't contributed in the regular season in a meaningful way in a while and this last playoff just wasn't himself. I'd rather have a 100% Marner than a 50-75% Stone
Yep. Sucks cause before the spleen he was having a great season, would have been in the running for a selke nomination. Still finished tied for 20 in takeaways playing a little over half the season right at ppg.
I 100% expect Marner will be a playoff beast for whatever team he gets traded to. That said, I do think it's time for the Leafs and him to part ways, ideally via trade so we don't lose a superstar for nothing.
I assume a starting point for a deal would look like Marner for Theodore plus another roster player and a prospect/picks? Seems like a decent start, Vegas gets the best overall player, and we reallocate salary to positions where we need more help
Vegas would also probably send like, Logan Thompson right? Idk what the situation is regarding Woll, but I’d imagine a platoon scenario would be good for Woll transitioning to a full-time roll and it’s a situation Thompson is familiar with
I keep seeing people online connecting Brossoit to us. But he would obviously be through FA rather than trade. Maybe Thompson gets asked for if Brossoit prices himself out? I dunno.
So is Theodore just not that good anymore? I haven’t been up to date on him, but he want from Vegas undeniable 1D to a trade target? I know Hanifin is really fucking good but shouldn’t Pietrangelo be the one out considering his age.
Hanifin took his spots on Vegas so I think he’s expendable. But on the leafs I think he would be their #1 dman or at least #2. I think it would be beneficial for both teams. With stone’s injuries a player like marner would be so good for Vegas on the regular season to help them get in with more ease and rest players like stone to let them come back for the playoffs
Not bad per se, but he went a bit invisible under Cassidy and our d depth has been good enough that we need to make some room. Also hanafin has been a stud, which makes Theo the odd man out with the most value in a trade. Petro also has a full NMC so nothing going to happen unless he wants it.
He has not been invisible. He just hasn’t been scoring. He has been flying under the radar with a ton of assists. Let’s say he gets 7.5x8 next year. VGK can afford it and then when Petro is done we have two top dmen.
They should be trading off McNabb and Whitecloud this summer. Korczac can def fill one of those roles and they will need to depend on Hutton to fill the other and hope Cormier can take a step this year. Doing this still allows them to resign Dorofeyev and have around 8.75 million to spend on Marchy/Stephenson/ufa(guentzal, lindholm). Not to mention we keep Thompson and have above average goal tending
That roster is way better than giving away Theodore and Thompson for Marner…who doesn’t really fit what we need. Stone and Eichel are both excellent passers. We don’t need another. We need a goal scorer, whether that’s Marchy or someone else like Guentzal.
So what does a potential trade look like? Toronto knows what they got, and despite the memes, Vegas does have to consider not only the cap space for this year, but the raise that Marner (and Pappa Paul) will demand.
Treliving isn't going to give him up for anything less than a haul.
Vegas operates a lot like playing Monopoly. You start making your way around the board, landing on properties and buying every one you land on. Eventually you might get both Park Place and Boardwalk, then you'll be set. It works until it doesn't and you're broke
Tired - Vegas is scrambling to fit this under cap while CapFriendly is still around
Wired - During me writing this comment, Mark Stone went on LTIR until the 2025 playoffs
I called this far before anyone even thought of this possibility because Vegas are legitimately insane enough to trade for Marner, and I severely doubt that any playwr would decline the chance to play in a market such as Vegas. Seems like a slam dunk for Toronto and Vegas. What just matters is the terms and trade pieces
Vegas should totally do this. He's a great playoff performer and will definitely help them win another cup. This is a rock solid move.
Ignore my flair.

Don't be sad, 6x11 ain't bad...
You took the words right out of my mouth.
The Salary Cap is a concept. Purely theoretical
If CapFriendly doesn’t exist, neither does the Cap itself!
Only ones who know the truth are the Capitols and maybe the league. Just gotta grease the Capitols and it’s all gravy for Vegas.
Vegas: “Do not try and bend the Cap—that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth.” Every Other GM: “What truth?” Vegas: “There is no Cap.”
Bend the Cup? Can do! - Aube-Kubel
More of a guideline than an actual rule
Aye, that be true!
what *IS* a salary cap anyway? Some kind of expensive hat?
/takes off celery hat. Yeah. Salary cap. That’s what I heard all along.
Genius move by Leonsis. Buys CapFriendly, takes it away from everyone, and suddenly the salary cap is no more.
You just wait: they'll find a way to get Matthews too
Bettman kicked the coyotes (his pet franchise) out of Arizona so that Mathew’s wouldn’t go anywhere. Or wait maybe it was so he could go to Vegas 😳
Utah from the top rope!
I feel like they should make an offer for Marner. They have so many young prospects and picks that they could easily afford him, give him the money he wants, and put him next to Keller.
It's fiction. We made it up. It never happened.
I mean it’s safe to say Vegas is in on literally everything. They are the embodiment of an agent of chaos in the NHL.
I agree I like that our team swings for the fences every year, but I'm not sure that losing Theodore, Marchessault and Thompson for Marner makes us a better team.
Marner should in theory match the number of points both those skaters get combined, and you can get a goalie this summer.
Vegas is much more offence by committee than the Leafs though so would be interesting to see
I like those players, though. :(
I mean it is Vegas they are the definition of a ruthless mob boss who does the move because it is strictly business not personal. Forget mcdavid or makar or kuch or Igor the biggest game changer in the league right are the Vegas golden knight’s management.
How the fuck do they even have any picks or prospects left at this point?
They get 7 more to trade away each year, and can trade future ones if that doesn't cut it. No need for picks when you can get the players you want anyway
And what use does Toronto have for any of those anyways? They're in win-now mode and need contributors.
And they won the cup doing it lol seems like more teams should copy them
Or the Rangers the 1990s and early 2000s
I swear to god Vegas...
If they trade for him today what injury does Mark Stone immediately sustain that has about a 46 week timeline?
Seasonal affective disorder
Seasonal allergies
He’s allergic to the regular season.
mitch’s allergies flare up as soon as the playoffs start
[удалено]
Equipment allergies
Well... Hossa actually had/has that. That's why he had to retire.
Vegas medical staff probably have Hossa locked in their facility and are sequencing his DNA to give Stone an allergy to his gear too
Could you imagine if Vegas put someone in player assistance only for them to return for the playoffs? I wouldn’t put it past them but holy shit that would be insane.
Marchessault gets back on Instagram and has to go to player assistance for rageaholics
Marchy about to go play for Toronto if we’re in on Marner somehow.
Marchy having to deal with Toronto media/fans wouldn't end well.
It would be entertaining tho
There would be pasta here for decades
I personally would love to see Marchessault tell Steve Simmons to go suck on his mummies titties
Steve Simmons your dog is as ugly as you!
“Shut the fuck lil dick and go suck on your mummy’s titties and stop wasting my time.” Marchessault to the Toronto media every day.
Seasonal ineffective disorder
The regular season
That would be very sad
He lost his smile
So Marner will be the next head of NXT?
"YOU DONT HAVE THE INSIDES TO SCORE GOALS!"
I understand that reference
I'm gonna go with being turned into a newt.
His spleen has pollen allergies and went to sleep after taking benadryl, so he’ll be out from March to May.
Lumbago
Count Choculitis
Sausage fingers
Anal fissures... someone has it...
Or watch, he'll be traded to Toronto but then retire halfway through the season
Gingivitis
Gestational diabetes?
He has a NMC. So he’s not going anywhere (unless he wants to, which he probably wouldn’t)
Coma. He could wake up at any moment.
I remember when PK Subban gave him micro fractures, so I vote for that.
Mark Stone and that darn hip/leg/arm/knee/foot/blot clots
Ruptured gizzard
Maybe they’re thinking if Cap Friendly isn’t around anymore no one will bother to check how over the cap they are 😂😛
[удалено]
Yeah, but watch Vegas make a man out of him and he becomes an elite playoff performer.
Will they defeat the Huns after?
🎵 *Let's get down to business* 🎵
with all the strength of a raging fire
He'll sign for longer term, less money and perform better. It is the way.
Marner? Less money? Lol
He'll do it for anyone but the leafs.
Paul Marner will not allow it.
Going from Keefe to Cassidy will be an insane culture shock for him. Although I guess that’s true with Berube, too.
Wasn’t Jack Eichel a locker room cancer before Cassidy ?
Honestly the league is better off with a team that makes moves like Vegas in it. They make the trade market way more entertaining to follow, even when the end up playing the villain by getting creative with LTIR.
We don’t want this dude
This feels like stating the obvious. It's Vegas and a blue-chip talent on the trading block, I don't think they know any other way.
They’ll just flip their last couple first round picks and a high salary player and voila
It’s an addiction at this point, and they make these big flashy moves on a regular basis, it’s a wonder why other teams have never tried it. It took 6 years but it got them a Cup.
Teams think it’s worse to do something big and flashy that fails than to do nothing and fail
Yea GMs don’t wanna speedrun to getting fired
Cowards
Holy Shit haha
Never a dull moment with the Vegas Golden Knights lmao
I mean yes Vegas being Vegas and in on every blockbuster, but of the teams who have D to sell for him, it sort of makes sense.
Marner suddenly hit with a season long injury
Unfortunately for Vegas, it’s better for them if Marner is injured during the playoffs and healthy during the season.
When Maner is traded to another team, his soul will be freed and he will be a playoff superstar and i will be happy for him
Would the city of Toronto survive if Marner wins the Cup his first year in Vegas?
It would happen with a Vegas vs Toronto final culminating with Marner winning the Conn Smythe and lifting the cup in Scotia Bank Arena. The ensuing riot would be quite the spectacle.
I'm not a Leafs fan and even I know Leafs fans would give their first born child to even be in the SCF, because at least that means the team has made progress.
The Leafs literally made a feature-length movie about the 1993 team when they returned to the conference finals for the first time in a while. A finals run would be treated like six cups right now. A cup like twenty cups
Yeah you’re right. There’s a part of me that does hope they finally get there. The Leafs faithful deserve that.
Or he’ll be the next Gaudreau where we barely hear about the guy. I’m very curious.
Johnny went to one of the worst teams in the league. If Mitch goes to Vegas he’d likely play with Eichel and Hertl. That’s a filthy line.
Ok hear me out - Bring Marner in - Stone's lacerated spleen flares up beginning of season - Marner carries regular season, puts Knights in a better seed as Stone said - Marner gets migranes in Feb, goes on LTIR, doesn't come back - Vegas trades for Konecny, whatever other big pending UFAs there are next year - Stone comes back for game 1 - Lose to Stars in first round
I approve this.
Had me in the first 99%.
I know this is a constant trope, but isn't Marner nearly a PPG player in the playoffs?
He racks up points in games 1-4 but freezes up in games 5-7
A particularly bad case of the shambles
Stone's gonna have a sudden case of boneitis.
This kind of thing would be impossible to pull with a guy like Benn because we know he doesn’t go down.
God damnit take your upvote
He has 69 upvotes right now. I would upvote it, but I can't.
Benn is licking his lips at this slippery comment
That's the only thing he licks.
His one regret will be not getting cured for boneitis
Dun dun dun duh duh duh dundudndu
Kelly McCrimmon: "Dont you worry about blank, let me worry about blank"
I think they are calling TBD right now, but I suspect it will be graph versus host when he tries to get hair plugs.
What kinda gymnastics will they have to do in order to make this work? There's no way Toronto will want to retain salary.
Theodore (who they probably won't keep in the long run) + a forward
Gonna be something like Theodore + Thompson + Dorofeyev for Marner.
Sign me up
I think I’d cry tears of joy if they got a return like that for Marner. Top pairing d-man, a goalie who has shown some great upside (while making close to minimum for another year) plus a young forward coming off a .5 PPG pace in his first real NHL season. I’d eat at Boston Pizza for a year straight if Treliving pulled that off
rip to your body
worth it
I honestly like it for both sides
You know, I don't hate this as long as Korzack is ready to make the jump. I'd rather Roy than Doro so that Roy has a chance to grow tbh. That's just me being picky though.
I'll personally piggyback Marner all the way to Vegas if we can get this return
Feels heavy from Vegas for me, but I guess it's what Theodre and thompson are seen as. I view theodre as a legit #1d and Thompson is a bonafide starter. But I guess if you see Theodre only as a good top 4 and Thompson as a 1b it's fair. It would make the Leafs a much more well rounded team forsure.

I got bad news for Vegas if they think Marner is gonna take less.
Vegas way overpaying for a guy wanting to be paid like hes mcdavid
For a year? Idk man I would.
I could be completely wrong here, but Toronto feels like it's in "win now" mode, which means they'd want every dollar of their cap to go into active players. It'd take a crazy scenario for them to feel like they're coming out ahead while retaining a chunk of Marner's salary.

Vegas turned "Salary Cap Off" before starting Chel.
its funny because if you keep the Cap on it basically takes all of the contracts on the team and multiplies them by 0.8 to stay under the cap.
So they get Marner for the regular season, and then switch him out for Mark Stone in the playoffs?
They have found the loophole
They're the only 2 wingers in the league who've been nominated for the Selke since 2011-12. So..this kind of works!
Imagine how much more exciting the league would be if there were more teams like Vegas that are seemingly in on every star player trade
So you want star players to be traded more "diversely", instead of "just" to Vegas?
Just to Vegas sounds good
Every team should realistically look into it at the least. Vegas management is far from inept so of course they would be interested.
Vegas is the living version of everyone’s NHL GM Mode saves.
At this point it's just comical and while I'm a big fuck the knights guy, I'm fucking for it. Let's see what the hell they do to pull that off.
All these LTIR jokes, but let's face it, if there's one team that will straight up dump Mark Stone or Alex Pietrangelo, it's the Knights.
He was definitely still injured.
I 100% expect Marner will be a playoff beast for whatever team he gets traded to. That said, I do think it's time for the Leafs and him to part ways, ideally via trade so we don't lose a superstar for nothing.
Yeah, and even if he does it wasn't working in Toronto. They've run it back so many times, _something_ needs to change.
i want to see this happen
I want to see the meltdown tbh
If 31 other teams let Vegas do this it's ridiculous
If someone wants to turn this into a bidding war we won't complain...
Only for Marner to refuse to waive his NMC right
I can hear Stone’s spleen re-rupturing in the distance
I assume a starting point for a deal would look like Marner for Theodore plus another roster player and a prospect/picks? Seems like a decent start, Vegas gets the best overall player, and we reallocate salary to positions where we need more help

I agree
How could they afford both Marcheseault and Marner, on top of Hertl etc?
Vegas: *hold my beer*
Don’t ask, just watch
Trade will be confirmed after capfriendly goes dark so no one will have any idea what type of financial gymnastics occurred to get it done
Even if he comes from the Leafs San Jose still has to retain 1/3 of the salary and give us picks.
I hope it happens so I don't have to worry about Vegas winning another Cup
He should just come to Vancouver to become a legend like legendary Mats Sundin
Snip-snip Marner.
Why in the hell would we get rid of Thompson. His contract is such a steal for Vegas especially.
He needs a new one following this season, just like Marner.
[удалено]
Vegas needs a lot more than simply Theodore cap space to be able to sign Marner. Stone AnD Theodore should be enough.
We’ll take him…. But only if you break his legs and guarantee he will be ready by playoffs.
Please make this happen, for the funny!
Would be a good place for him
just sign marchessault already
So what does a potential trade look like? Toronto knows what they got, and despite the memes, Vegas does have to consider not only the cap space for this year, but the raise that Marner (and Pappa Paul) will demand. Treliving isn't going to give him up for anything less than a haul.
Except when Marner gets injured before the deadline they will want him to stay injured for the playoffs.
Welp, lemme crack open CapFriendly while I still can and pretend I’m a GM
Water is wet.
A lot of media guys want to get clicks in the summer too
They can't keep getting away with this...
