Turns out they have different *first* names, the one who's been on the Canucks since 2018 is [Fredrik Elias Pettersson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elias_Pettersson?useskin=vector) and the newcomer is [Elias Nils Pettersson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elias_Pettersson_\(ice_hockey,_born_2004\)?useskin=vector).
Not so much with the Stars nowadays (the national guys just mispronounce 80% of our guys)
I have never heard Pekka Rinne mentioned by any human being who did not utter the entire name.
Conor McGahey (Avs radio guy) pretty much admitted during the first Avs-Sabres game last season that he goes out of his way to say Luukkonen's full name as much as possible because it's fun.
Devon Toews is probably so people don’t think Jonathon Toews. He is newly out of the league and a huge name in the 2010’s, so it’s probably to avoid that confusion.
It’s rare to hear the Avs use last names at all. Usually it’s like “Nate, to Cale, to Mikko, HE SHOOTS, BIG Val gets the rebound scooooooorees. Big Val from Mikko!!!”
It’s very strange as a neutral fan.
It’s weird it feels kinda beyond homers, makes me feel like they think they’re part of the team. Like they’re in the room and they’re just buddies with all these guys.
The wings guys, they’re homers. But in a good way. They care about the team and watch the game with red and white glasses, every penalty against is a bad call, that kinda thing. But they don’t act like they’re buddy buddy with the current players.
ANYWAY DOC AND EDZO WHEN KRISTOPHER LETANG WAS WITH VAL D’OR OF THE QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR LEAGUE HE HAD BLONDE HAIR AND WAS TEAMMATES WITH BRAD MARCHAND OF THE BOSTON BRUINS
Not on my team, but it took me years to figure out that Fedor Tyutin was a first and last name because Steigerwald would always say it so seamlessly as one name I thought his last name was Federtutin.
Technically not NHL even though he’s played a few games, but both the Monsters and Jackets announcers always say Luca Del Bel Beluz’s full name every time and always trip over themselves doing it
Every announcer jerks off with pride at being able to pronounce Joel Armia with a silent "J". I can't stand it. Not the name. Just the insistence to say the entire name as a cringe flex.
Carey Price was previously... now one I think of as a full name callout most the time is Jake Evans. Cole Caufield gets it fairly often too, but I think Evans has the edge
Not on our team anymore but, not only full name but birthplace: “Longbeach native Matt Nieto”
In a similar vein we had “Harvard Alum Alex Killorn”
Derek Ryan. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins too (although the national broadcasters do not use his full name)
Yes, it's not nuge, or RNH... it's the full Ryan Nugent-Hopkins lol
When he was with us it was Long Beach native Matt Nieto
I wonder how Long Beach Native Matt Nieto is doing. What happened to him?
He came to Pittsburgh and promptly perished.
rip LBNMN
To shreds they say
🎶Glory, glory Matt Nieto🎶
Ahh reminds me of Mimico, Ontario's Dave Bolland.
Shouldn’t that be Long Beach native Matthew Nieto or am I being excessively pedantic?
I think Randy Hahn said Matt
you beat me to it
Nino Niederreiter. It's just so fun to say.
Gimme fuel, gimme fire.
Give me Timo Fuckin Meier
Oh that's another good one!
Flows better than Nino honestly
Aw, we had so much fun with that the day of his 5 goal game. I miss him and am really glad y’all like him so much.
I did hear a lot of Niko Mikkola these playoffs, which is also fun to say!
I miss Dennis Beyak
Did he retire?
LongBeachNative MattNieto
love how at least 3 of us responded with the exact same answer. I’ll never forget you LBNMN
Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes
Canucks: All of them
Murdoch only says the "JT" part for Miller, the Crowd chants his surname.
He doesn’t say Jimothy Timothy Miller? I’m truly disappointed.
It’s downright disrespectful, in my opinion.
If we’re paying attention, we catch on at the T so really he just says the J
They had to with Henrik and Daniel so they just kept going with it?
I dunno what they’re gonna do when the 2nd Elias Pettersson joins the team
I've been thinking about this more than I should
They probably have different middle names, they could always use an initial or just say all three or however many they need to
Turns out they have different *first* names, the one who's been on the Canucks since 2018 is [Fredrik Elias Pettersson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elias_Pettersson?useskin=vector) and the newcomer is [Elias Nils Pettersson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elias_Pettersson_\(ice_hockey,_born_2004\)?useskin=vector).
Would you look at that Another Nils
Having flashbacks to when the Islanders had Brock Nelson, frans Nielsen, and Anders nilson
They absolutely did not - Shorty and Cheech rarely said anything but “Henrik” and “Daniel”
I’m unironically so excited lol..maybe they’ll both play a preseason game together
Not so much with the Stars nowadays (the national guys just mispronounce 80% of our guys) I have never heard Pekka Rinne mentioned by any human being who did not utter the entire name.
Pekka Rinne walked so Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen could run.
Conor McGahey (Avs radio guy) pretty much admitted during the first Avs-Sabres game last season that he goes out of his way to say Luukkonen's full name as much as possible because it's fun.
Roope Hintz usually gets the full name treatment doesn't he? I wish they'd say it like Stewie Griffin would say it, just once.
he usually does, yeah. He does get "Hintz" often, though. The best part is how Pete DeBoer pronounces it ROOOO pee
I’ve heard “Pekka” more than “Rinne” which I find funny
I think they're saying 'pecorino'
Devon Toews gets the full name treatment every time. Logan O'Connor and Jack Johnson usually do as well.
well, Jack Johnson frequently being on the ice at the same time as Erik Johnson more or less made that a necessity
Big Val from Mikko!!!” It’s very strange as a neutral fan.
It definitely has an impact on the impression that they're Homers (beyond the level that most local guys are) when they act as familiar as they do
It’s weird it feels kinda beyond homers, makes me feel like they think they’re part of the team. Like they’re in the room and they’re just buddies with all these guys. The wings guys, they’re homers. But in a good way. They care about the team and watch the game with red and white glasses, every penalty against is a bad call, that kinda thing. But they don’t act like they’re buddy buddy with the current players.
Yea, I moved to CO about 8 years ago and found that extremely jarring. Still don’t like it. The Rockies broadcast does it too.
Toews was the first guy that came to mind.
Kaapo Kakko
I feel like they say Artemi Panarin quite a bit too
That’s cause it just kinda sounds like one mildly longish name. It’s kinda fun to say.
It's not all the time but two first names, two syllables usually prompts announcers to use his full name: Nick Paul does it all.
Canucks legend and Stanley Cup Champion Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Yes I was going to say this too. It also sort of made me chuckle because he had the longest name on the team. Yet Shorty somehow just preferred it.
Just say it fast and enough it will sound like Lossem-Tossem
Funny enough, that’s the exact name I was thinking too. He always gets the full name treatment as a Panther.
It’s just fun to say I guess
Lawsum Tassum
*thousand oaks native* Trevor Moore
I'm not sure there is anybody on the Caps right now getting that treatment, but it used to be Vitek Vanecek. Vitek Vanecek is a name to be savored.
The Habachi King.
Not a Panther but Carson Soucy gets the full name treatment more than not
carter verhaeghe. it’s not an “always” thing but its very common
I wish he'd pay for boston because I want to see their announcers wrestle with that one.
Not on my team but John Michael Liles
Wasn't he just John Michael, no surname? :P At least he was a special snowflake back in the NHL 2005 game.
"Jack Hughes passes back to Luke Hughes, back to Jack Hughes." It's a good problem to have at least 🤷♂️
Good thing both brothers have single syllable names
Seriously, mama and papa Hughes did good on the single syllable names. They had the foresight to make announcers lives easier lol
Well they kinda made a mistake with the first one so they made sure they got it right with the next two
I remember Colton Sceviour being one
When we had beyak he had a few players on other teams he loved to call. John Michael Liles was his favorite
Feel like people say Roman Josi a lot. Craig Smith and Colin Wilson were obvious ones back in the day.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Fil Hronek
KIRRRRIIIILLLL MAAARRRCHENNKOOO
Kristopher Letang
Thanks, Pierre.
ANYWAY DOC AND EDZO WHEN KRISTOPHER LETANG WAS WITH VAL D’OR OF THE QUEBEC MAJOR JUNIOR LEAGUE HE HAD BLONDE HAIR AND WAS TEAMMATES WITH BRAD MARCHAND OF THE BOSTON BRUINS
That's it? You didn't even mention any of the Staal brothers.
OR THE MONSTER OF THE GAME SIDNEY CROSBY!!!!!
I CAN!
Holy potatoes this is the literal first thing I thought of
Brian Mudryk LOVES calling Mike Pezzetta "Mike Pezzetta". Unless he scores, then he's "Michael Pezzetta"
Not on my team, but it took me years to figure out that Fedor Tyutin was a first and last name because Steigerwald would always say it so seamlessly as one name I thought his last name was Federtutin.
Mat Barzal and Bo Horvat Unless it’s Butch, then it’s Mark Barzal
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is very often called by his full name.
Brick township New Jersey native Jim Dowd
represent
Rasmus Andersson for us But Brayden Point for Tampa to a degree
From years ago, it was Ville Leino. Imagine my surprise when it didn't say "Villeleino" on the back of his jersey.
Not my team, but for the longest time I thought Devon Toews was his last name... Devontaes. Because that was the only way I ever heard it!
Joshua Roy
The nickname Wawa as a result is so fun
Andrew Copp
John Shorthouse - CHRISTOPHER HIGGINS
"Over to Lucas Raymond"
Idk if the Blackhawks do but Seth Jones when he was in Columbus
It was more common when we had both Jones brothers on the roster.
Lawson Crouse
Jujhar Kaira
Thousand Oaks native Trevor Moore
Jujhar Khaira
JT Miller
Sheriff Shane Hnidy
Am I tripping or do they always say “Jamie Benn“
It wasn't a trip! Jamie was just checking your skates were secured to your feet correctly, he swears.
Technically not NHL even though he’s played a few games, but both the Monsters and Jackets announcers always say Luca Del Bel Beluz’s full name every time and always trip over themselves doing it
I think Rimer wanted to give himself one last challenge before retirement.
Just had to prove to use he still had the dexterity to say names on the way out. God I miss Jeff already..
Arber Xhelaj - maybe not ALL the time but it’s close
Wee Willie Nylander
When we had beyak he had a few players on other teams he loved to call. John Michael Liles
Not Jerome Iginla. /s
I feel like Adrian Kempe gets it a lot
It was always Michael peka. I think because saying just peker would not be so good
Daniel Sedin
I can still hear Jeff Rimer saying it clear as day in my head: RJ Umberger
"Matty" Beniers sticks out as a potential example from the Kraken
Not on the Flames but never forget about Big Logan Stanley
Not on the habs but Pierre Houde would always say John-Michael Liles when we played him
Jack Johnson
The Sedins by necessity
In NHL 12, anytime Manny Malholtra had the puck the announcer would say his full name and I found it hilarious for some reason
OEL the obvious one?
This thread reminds me of Pierre McGuire. When you used to always name a players hometown or junior team.
JVR
Sidney Crosby
John Tavares
Every announcer jerks off with pride at being able to pronounce Joel Armia with a silent "J". I can't stand it. Not the name. Just the insistence to say the entire name as a cringe flex.
And then they get to his last name and fuck it up by stressing the wrong syllable.
Is it not ar-Me-uh?
Kyle Connor
Carey Price was previously... now one I think of as a full name callout most the time is Jake Evans. Cole Caufield gets it fairly often too, but I think Evans has the edge
Haven’t heard that nonsense since macguire
Mike Hunt
