I'm guessing he wanted to stay in the Midwest and was just playing hardball. Stevie must have known he really wanted to be there and didn't bend on the term.
From Friedman:

- $4M base
- $1.5M at 10 games
- $250k at 60 games
- $500k if they make playoffs
- $250k for 60 points AND playoffs.
Total is $6.5M
To answer the question you’re getting at, whatever team the player in question is on has to pay the PB.
For example, Blake Wheeler had a cup winning bonus this year. If the Rangers had traded Wheeler to the Panthers, Florida would be on the hook for that PB
On the flip side, Sean Monahan had a PB for playing something like 15 games. He earned that in Montreal, and Winnipeg therefore didn’t have to pay any bonuses when they traded for him
I was getting at the team incentive of him giving it his all on the ice and in the locker room for detroit for a playoff push. 1 yr contracts are easy to sell to playoff teams say if detroit isn't going to make it. In my eyes (depending on where the deadline is) a bonus for 60 games would be the incentive to put all of his chips into detroit, and not necessarily looking at who's gon a take him to the cup. But then again, any player would laugh at 250k versus a real cup chance
He got a full NTC, which has much more bearing than any bonuses. I see your point, but this is more about Detroit not having a bigger cap hit on their books this year
Haha, the Leafs should start offering $1 billion bonuses for Stanley Cups. They will, likely, never pay it but if they do win the cup no one will really be all that upset to see a once in a lifetime occurrence.
Bonuses like that tend to be entirely about guaranteed metrics to get the player a large chunk of bonus money.
Basically guarantees Kane that $1.5 without having to add it to the cap hit
It depends on how much cap space the team in questions ends the season with. If the Wings end the year with $2.5 million in unused cap space and Kane earned all his bonuses, they wouldn’t rollover to next season
Or, if he earns all of it and the Wings end the year with say $1 million in space, then only $1.5m would rollover to next year as an overage
Teams that don’t use LTIR accrue cap space, if the wings start with say ~$500k in cap space that space will grow daily. So they may finish the year with enough space
Do you know if you can partially carry over? As in they finish the season with $750,000 in space and he earns $1.75M in bonuses. Is that $1M next year or $1.75M. Couldn’t find a definitive answer
To use your example, it would be $1 million. Whatever cap space the red wings end the year with apply to any earned performance bonuses (Kane and any ELC players).
No, that's the one he'll definitely get. They do this to postpone some of the cap hit until next year. This is essentially a $5.5Mx1 contract with a $1M performance bonus from his perspective.
Importantly here I think it allows you to roll it over. Essentially adding 1.5MM in flex for this season although it will count against DET next year should it be rolled over.
Every year I try to get more into the money/contract side of hockey and now with Capfriendly going away and trying to understand what the hell you're talking about I guess I should just give up.
Essentially you can build your team out to the cap without factoring in performance bonuses — so base salary only, in Kanes case this is 4M. So at the very least 4M of his salary will count towards this years cap.
So the wings build a roster to 88MM (or whatever it is) and Kane achieves all of his bonuses. They would in this case roll over — the argument being that performance bonuses aren’t guaranteed but need to be paid when achieved. So DET would have next years cap less Kanes bonus.
So say Detroit only ends up spending 86.5MM. Then they can afford to pay Kane 1.5MM in bonus this year, bringing them to 88MM and then the rest rolls over against next year’s cap. If they say only spend 85MM then they can afford to pay out his entire bonus and nothing will roll over.
I am not sure how this works if a team has a player on LTIR. To the best of my understanding a team with LTIR relief is considered capped out for the days they have players there.
Interestingly I think performance bonuses are only available in specific cases — age 35+ contracts, rookie contracts, and a very specific injured player contract. Connor Brown on EDM had the latter this year and his bonus will roll against EDMs cap this year.
Patrick Kane hates Jake Walman confirmed. The moment Jake was traded, we started getting news about Kane wanting to stay. The Swedish Mafia has aged out and now the Ramen Hair Cartel is running Hockeytown. I hear Kane is currently mentoring Lucas Raymond to be his lieutenant.
That's weird, maybe Detroit is actually a hockey destination for players who know and love a city full of rich history.
Maybe Kane saw the direction Detroit is going and wants to be a part of it.
Also how many players have requested a trade away from the Canucks v the Wings?
Zadina demanded a trade, bet on himself and lost big time, San Jose doesn't even want him.
I agree with you . There is alot of bandwagoners from different states who doesn't understand the deep love we have for our hockeytown . He said it himself and detroit energy is unmatched . Let's go detroit vs everybody !
Stoked. Dude is such a beautiful passer, scorer, stickhandler, and hockey player. Glad he is back. Great mentor for younger players. He is just an electric player. Super happy.
Said it in the Wings sub but with how easily Kane slotted into the lineup and how good he looked, a full offseason of working with the team is going to be huge.
He's 107 points behind Brett Hull for the all-time scoring record for American players. Hopefully he can stay healthy this upcoming year because he'll probably be able to break it the year after.
Loved that OT goal in Chicago, literally jumped outta my chair and celebrated… even you know in your biased brain that it would mean a lot more if he broke the record as a Hawk.
100% it would. Even though I still hate Chicago despite us not being conference rivals anymore if he leaves Detroit next year it makes the most sense for him to go back and have his final hurrah with the Hawks
Fair enough, I respect that. With that being said, I'll be rooting for the Wings (again) this year as my secondary team for as long as they have Kane! I was very disappointed at the end of last season with how you guys barely missed the playoffs... Literally couldn't have been any closer imo.
Man that final game where we made an insane comeback with 2 seconds left to force OT only for Washington to score an empty netter 30 seconds later was gut wrenching. Hopefully we'll both be relevant again soon, Bedard is so much fun to watch
Agreed. And yes for sure! I really miss the Hawks-Wings rivalry too… the NHL and hockey in general is so much better when both our teams are relevant (preferably dominating).
picked up a Team USA Olympic Kane jersey a few right around when the offseason started knowing he might not come back, I’m so happy to be able to wear it all season
Great video but I had to stop after hearing some idiot mention “6 strides that” Perron took before cross checking Zub. The number of idiots that see 2 strides and blathered on about 6 was embarrassing. That suspension was a joke, ruined the season for the wings.
Wow, that's a really smart contract. Just a 1 year deal. And just a $4M cap hit this year so it wont harm their ability to give Seider and Raymond term. Then the bonuses kick in next year when he's gone and probably gets replaced by an ELC player.
I love the way it’s structured. Beyond excited to have him back. Stoked I get at least another year out of my #88 jersey. 2013 me would be so fucking confused lmao

I think we could potentially do both just Kane and Stamkos shouldn't play together at EVS except for favorable matchups. Kucherov is better than Kane at this point in their careers but Kane to Stammer PP1 would still be lethal. I really want to see it.
Except getting better year after year after taking on the 2019 wings who were absolutely abysmal and by some metrics one of the worst teams of all time?
The problem - mostly- is while we’ve been bad for a while pretty much anything pre Yzerman (besides Larkin) is gone.
If you look at what we’ve drafted since (with our lottery luck), the pool is there. Seider, Edvinsson, Sadin-Pelikka on the back end has a lot of potential, but even Ed just broke in the end of last year.
If you look at the Yzerman tenure for the increase in overall competitiveness we’ve seen, and the current quality of the prospect pool it’s not bad. We’ve just spent a lot of time plugging holes waiting for them to get here IMO. They’re going to lack a franchise player up front, but it should be fine.
Next couple seasons will say a lot about how much this did or didn’t actually work. All of the “bad” contracts are pretty manageable compared to the value some other players in the conference offer.
Took a while to get a reasonable response.
I have no doubts about your prospect pool. I think it’s strong.
Where I’m confused is the allocation of contracts. Chiarot, Holl, Petry, Compher, Copp, and Husso were weird. I understand bringing in veteran presence, but I don’t think these were the right guys to offer term and AAV.
You're acting like a bit of a dickhead for no apparent reason, but setting that aside for a moment, Holland salted the earth in Detroit when he left.
When Yzerman arrived in 2019, Detroit had literally no NHL-quality prospects, and our roster only had 4 or 5 legitimate NHL players on it. 2019 wasn't just a bad team, it was historically bad, and there no prospects to give us hope.
Our lottery luck has also been league-worst, with our best pick being 4th overall despite being a glorified AHL team.
Five seasons later, we're 1pt out of the playoffs with (arguably) the best prospect pool in the NHL.
I don't love the contacts you mentioned - none of us do - but our young prospects can't develop properly on non-competitive cannon fodder teams. Constantly getting spanked by everyone you play stifles prospect development, shatters confidence in young players, and instills a loser mentality through demoralization. Every single shit contact Yzerman has inked is set to expire right around the time he expects us to stay playing meaningful playoff games; before then, the goal is to play competitive hockey so our prospects develop properly.
Given that Yzerman walked into a literal dumpster fire and has had god awful lottery luck, the fact that he has managed to turn the Wings into a competitive bubble team with exciting prospects in only 5 seasons is pretty incredible.
The overpay to middling vets is a death by a thousand cuts scenario. If we only have two of those, it's probably fine.
I would even say that if it was Compher and Chiarot, I'd be a bit annoyed by Chiarot's first year, but ok about it now.
Copp, Holl and Petry though....absolute misses.
Stop deflecting and give me something with substance
Otherwise, you can’t prove my point inaccurate. Not to pile on how much everyone complains about Toronto coverage yet they somehow they can’t avoid talking about us in discussions
Steady improvement in our prospect pool and in pts since he emptied the cabinets and started rebuilding. It’s been slow, there’s been a few missteps but we were 1 win from the playoffs last year and had our first relevant season in like 7 years, all the while having the worst draft luck.
What’s with Van, Ott and Tor fans talking shit on Yzerman all the time? Y’all are just toxic weenies.
Right. In that case, he's overseen an average improvement of 10.4 points in the standings every single season. In addition to fully stocking the prospect pipeline from empty to at worst top 3 in the league. So just do yourself a favor and shut up
As a matter of fact I have.
Tell me what he’s done to progress the team closer to success rather than handcuff them to lower mediocrity with the contracts he’s dished out.
For what he started with I think Detroit is in a better position. The record has improved every year and he has rebuilt a good prospect pool. Some of the contracts he has signed are fair to question, but I see it as a placeholder and in his mind by the end of those contracts is when younger players should be ready and taking those roster spots from them.
Not saying he’s infallible, but I think he has developed a plan and is sticking to it and the team is trending in the right direction.
If I remember right it's only at 4 million, and the extra bonuses are tagged on at the end of the year if they ended with enough cap space, or they roll over to next season's cap if they didn't
I think Wings will be a lot better next season. I know they came close this past season but I think Y will make the right moves to make this at least a round 2 playoff team during this coming season.
I think more deals need to look like this.
Teams should be able to insulate from big drops in performance from players. They can do this by structuring salary as a taper with more and more of the contract coming in bonuses as terms progress.
Absolute steal. I can’t believe he only went one year on the term.
I'm guessing he wanted to stay in the Midwest and was just playing hardball. Stevie must have known he really wanted to be there and didn't bend on the term.
i kinda wish we did give him term with how good he looked
He was told stamkos and trouba are coming so he said ya I want in lol
From Friedman: Kane contract has bonuses. Per sources: - $4M base - $1.5M at 10 games - $250k at 60 games - $500k if they make playoffs - $250k for 60 points AND playoffs. Total is $6.5M
Hang on. Is the trade deadline typically before or after the 60 game mark?
To answer the question you’re getting at, whatever team the player in question is on has to pay the PB. For example, Blake Wheeler had a cup winning bonus this year. Ah I missed the NTC aspect. Thanks! Yeah there's some more signings to take care of.
The majority of buyers at the deadline will be teams with a shot at the cup, who Kane might waive to go to if Detroit were in that position
For a real world example, Kyle Okposo had a Cup winning bonus with his Sabres contract so the Panthers are on the hook for that bonus now
Seems like a safe clause for Sabres management to put in contracts
Haha, the Leafs should start offering $1 billion bonuses for Stanley Cups. They will, likely, never pay it but if they do win the cup no one will really be all that upset to see a once in a lifetime occurrence.
Just barely after
Ah okay. I figured as so, which would make my point mute.

Yeah, it adds flexibility unless he gets injured and doesn’t play after like game 3.

In 5 years he’s gone from not making the playoffs to still not making the playoffs
Yes
Steady improvement in our prospect pool and in pts since he emptied the cabinets and started rebuilding. It’s been slow, there’s been a few missteps but we were 1 win from the playoffs last year and had our first relevant season in like 7 years, all the while having the worst draft luck. What’s with Van, Ott and Tor fans talking shit on Yzerman all the time? Y’all are just toxic weenies.
How many cups has he won as a player? How many years as a captain? The GM thing has gone better than most in the league. Chill bro.
In this context, we’re strictly talking about his tenure as GM.
Right. In that case, he's overseen an average improvement of 10.4 points in the standings every single season. In addition to fully stocking the prospect pipeline from empty to at worst top 3 in the league. So just do yourself a favor and shut up
You haven’t been watching obviously
As a matter of fact I have. Tell me what he’s done to progress the team closer to success rather than handcuff them to lower mediocrity with the contracts he’s dished out.
For what he started with I think Detroit is in a better position. The record has improved every year and he has rebuilt a good prospect pool. Some of the contracts he has signed are fair to question, but I see it as a placeholder and in his mind by the end of those contracts is when younger players should be ready and taking those roster spots from them. Not saying he’s infallible, but I think he has developed a plan and is sticking to it and the team is trending in the right direction.
Steve Yzerman has sex, wow
Wait… you can issue actual performance targets for performance bonuses? Somebody tell my hockey team please
I like Kane in Detroit. Hope either they or Philly (or both) make a playoff appearance this year.
Does this go on the cap sheet as 6.5MM either way?
I think incentives apply to next years cap?
Gotcha thanks!
I was half right. If we go over the salary cap due to incentives it goes to next year, if not it stays on this year.
Ooo sign every single FA to a 1 year $750k contract and put their actual contract as a 1 game bonus! And then don’t field a team next year
Well only 35+ contracts and ELCs are eligible for incentive bonuses I believe.
Plus you can only exceed the cap with perf bonuses by 7.5%.
Foiled again
I mean it could still work for a team going all in one year and signing a bunch of vets.
If I remember right it's only at 4 million, and the extra bonuses are tagged on at the end of the year if they ended with enough cap space, or they roll over to next season's cap if they didn't
This just in, Wings spooky as shit
YZERPLAN
This is a better contact than I'd even hoped for.
Dude was looking cooked until this year and suddenly he's looking good again. Nice contract.
Wings are gonna be scary next year. About time playoffs come back to motor city
From your keyboard to the Hockey God’s ears🙏🏻🙏🏻
Lot of work still to do
I think the culture and identity are set. Just need to add the right roster through free agency and trades starting tomorrow.
Agree!
I think that's something Larkin and the rest didn't get enough credit for. They kept redwings culture going through the terrible years
We are going to be scary?
I think Wings will be a lot better next season. I know they came close this past season but I think Y will make the right moves to make this at least a round 2 playoff team during this coming season.
I'd hope we're a playoff team with how close we were this year
Along with all the other scary teams. They just have to be scarier.
Frigging Atlantic man
The team is changing direction and starting to build good momentum
I think more deals need to look like this. Teams should be able to insulate from big drops in performance from players. They can do this by structuring salary as a taper with more and more of the contract coming in bonuses as terms progress.
Showtyme is BACK I love the structure of this deal
How does the cap hit work with bonuses? Is his cap hit just assuming he hits all the bonuses?
4m for sure, then incentives hit this year until they’re over the cap, then apply to next year
So just recycle the goodbye letter for next year?
so 5.5m
4 this year though. The bonuses will likely be pushed to next when we have some cap relief coming.
Good. I don't want that ancient floater.
The Wings want to be as awful as the Hawks?
