I've seen some good content from interior decorators where they explain that a certain look of cabinet doesn't make something look dated, it's the entire cohesive picture. You don't need to swap out every single piece with an updated version to look nice, in fact it's bound to look dated itself much sooner. And in this era it's how we have white everything with square cabinet pulls and black faucets. Having a blend of looks that cleverly work together makes something timeless.
For example, fresh wall paint and maybe a new matching floor would do wonders. No need to strip the entire thing to white. I would do maybe a new counter top with some updated furniture. Done.
Aw, yeah! They took out the range vent too so now your beautiful white cabinets and walls can collect all the grease and smoke that accumulates when you cook!!
lol got me there!
But There’s not room to vent it out, that’s typically the kind of setup to mount a microwave to the wall. The microwave may have a “vent” that is pretty much just a fan that pushes right back out into the kitchen.
I REALLY hate this tile. I don’t mean real Portuguese/Spanish tile, I mean this peel and stick looking live laugh love version. It already looks dated.
I don’t like the before and I don’t like the after. The after needs more warmth, the before was just old af and gross looking idk what people are talking about I guess it’s cool to hate on anything where “real wood” tones are taken out
Yeah, it wasn’t quality wood with real character either. There wasn’t anything worth preserving in it. The new kitchen is bland af but I’m sure most people would prefer to cook in it. I’d find an all white kitchen irritating to keep pristine, but it’s not like the original would ever feel clean.
I kind of like the new but the countertops look strange. However, if you added color yourself through dishware, towels, rugs, curtains, and decorative pieces, I actually think the space would look okay :)
I mean, why not? Kitchen is a functional space, It’s not a thing to hold onto because of nostalgia. The result is nice, it’s obviously not finished yet.
I don’t know if I actually have like underlying ocd or something (my brain gets kind of weird sometimes). But white kitchen so that I can see EVERYTHING that’s dirty kind of sounds nice. I would never second guess if it’s clean or not because you could tell from a glance. Plus I basically wipe down my kitchen daily anyway, so nothing would change except the fact that I could now see every little spot that needs wiping.
My biggest issue I think would be counter top stains, depending on the material of them. If the white countertops got stained it would drive me nuts.
Eh even when i cook for 2 it can get messy. Plus i grew up where a kitchen was more than somewhere we just cooked. My mom would just chill in there and we would sit at the table and talk.
Nah I think a lot of people share that opinion. But there are also people who like white kitchens.
I personally like more subtle interior colors. I even like the grey on grey, because I own a ton of colorful items LOL. So it gives a nice neutral slate for all my chaotic belongings.
Looks nice now but the white is not going to stay white long (without regular scrubbing) without a range hood. There is no where to replace and re-vent the old one they took out
These materials used for the modern kitchen facades are actually sleek, and it’s very easy to take care of them — easier in comparison with wooden ones. I don’t even think the before pic was actual wood.
My friend had a white kitchen for a decade, no problem. She renovated it recently and once again chose white.
Does she have a range hood that vents out of the kitchen? That solves the majority of the mess.
The old cabinets were wood, but they didn’t need cleaned as much because they had a range hood that vented out of the kitchen, meaning all the smoke and steam and grease got vented out, instead of settling on the cabinets and other surfaces. My parents have cabinets very similar to the original in the picture, they also have a range hood that vents out of the kitchen, out of the house. They don’t have problems with residues settling in their kitchen. I have a kitchen that never had a range hood to vent out of the house, or even out of the kitchen. It’s got a “vent” on the microwave, and I have to spend a considerable amount of time cleaning my cabinets, walls, fan, and ceiling. I don’t cook any different than my parents.
Yep, she does have the vent thing. Btw the kitchen owner is clearly planning to get one!
Meanwhile I don’t, but it’s no trouble for me. I live alone and don’t fry a lot though.
Interior design Reddit is brutal sometimes. Can confirm. They will demand you remodel your space to fit their preference. Even if you’re only asking advice about cabinet color, rug choice, etc.
The first kitchen is grandma’s, the place that wraps its arms around you when your heart is broken. The reno is what the new owners do to it after grandma passes.
You can’t go home again. Sigh.
I could have sworn I saw this in the reverse order and it was a wholesome tale of restoring a kitchen to its original charm. That’s what I’m gonna go with
I get why they’d want to update it but also I feel like the update looks like a dental office break room
This is our autoclave where we sterilize our mason jar glasses between each use.
I liked it better when it was in the eighties and there was a cat.
Omg it does 😭
Ohhh this hurts me. Redo the counters and leave the poor cabinets alone!!
Yeah it looks nicer but it’s been scrubbed of personality. Except the new wallpaper. I kinda like it.
The wallpaper isn’t bad but it reminds me of the love laugh love decor
An update might have been needed, but this probably doesn't fit the character of the rest of the home. Unless they did that everywhere.

Oh yes! We were looking to buy an older home with some character. Everything had been knocked out in so many homes. It was disappointing.
It’s nicer but too nice. Personality is gone.
Aw, yeah! They took out the range vent too so now your beautiful white cabinets and walls can collect all the grease and smoke that accumulates when you cook!!
To be fair they also took out the range. No heat no smoke! I'll bet they're getting a new hood with the new stove.

I love this tile. Have it in my kitchen.
I don’t hate the new floor, but the rest of it is just… depressing.
New wallpaper is kinda nice, but not when the rest of the room follows the same stuff.
It’s not tile?
We loved kitty so much we decided to theme the room where this picture was taken after her ❤️
that old tile was so cute. i’m so happy they got rid of all the character!!!!

i mean this completely unironically but they would have been better off with white walls than whatever that hideous backsplash is.
It's like living in a frigging doctor's office ![gif](giphy|ZhS9VBccVQ1kQ)
The before photos look like my Paw Paw’s kitchen (though he kept it very tidy and repaired) which makes sense as he lived in a Sears catalog house.

Ah yes white so i can see every single stain and splatter in my kitchen.

if you have a big family with kids and cook a lot, that’s probably not your best choice. For a person who lives alone it’s not hard to keep it clean.
Eh even when i cook for 2 it can get messy. Plus i grew up where a kitchen was more than somewhere we just cooked. My mom would just chill in there and we would sit at the table and talk.
maybe its just me- but i despise kitchens that are all white and no color. they ruined the beautiful wood into a marble white asylum.
You and this whole subreddit lol

Beautiful wood? Lmao
all wood is beautiful 💯💯
Hardwood maybe, but this was laminate. Check out the bottom corners of the cabinet doors under the sink.
Easily fixable perhaps

Note to self: NEVER post a remodel on Reddit...

The one time they *don’t* use LVL flooring lmao.
You striped it of all of its warmth. It’s boring cold and kinda tacky. Too much white. The floor is nice.
yeah atLEAST they didnt use the fake grey plastic wood thing 😭😭
STOP MAKING HOUSES LOOK LIKE HOSPITALS PLEASE I mean the old kitchen was dated but at least it didn't feel like I was coming out of a coma in the ICU.
Add more pots on chairs then it will be perfect
I think the after is decent . It looks Like a standard updated kitchen
The first kitchen is grandma’s, the place that wraps its arms around you when your heart is broken. The reno is what the new owners do to it after grandma passes. You can’t go home again. Sigh.
Lost its character and charm
Should’ve kept it. In another 30 years it would be considered an incredible snapshot of time and you could do Airbnb for like $1500 a night.
I could have sworn I saw this in the reverse order and it was a wholesome tale of restoring a kitchen to its original charm. That’s what I’m gonna go with
Circlejerk aside, this is so sad to me. They took a charming rustic kitchen and made it boring. God I hate that people do this
fr 😔
Hmm, I like how the countertop is partitioned into two sections. Really ties it all together
