There are companies that specialize in this so just like windows call a few to get some quotes. I had this done in 2009 and it was around 2k. Be aware that the chimney will likely need a new liner but that wasn’t a huge cost in my case. Also your current hvac is not a factor, and yes they have remote control. I don’t recall if ours worked during a power outage. In short it was a great upgrade for us and we loved it. Good luck 👍

Thank you for the advice. My area is prone to losing electricity so I definitely want it to work when that occurs. I’ve been told there are models that have electrical starters and those that do not.

Yeah some have a blower too and adjustable vanes, I’m not sure how you would get the spark to ignite without electricity though. I’m not kidding ours put out a lot of heat and like I said we were really happy with it.

There are usually fireplace/chimney stores that specifically sell and service this type of thing as well as providing chimney sweeping and similar services. A word of warning on doing this though. We swapped the woodburning fireplace at our last house for gas and weren't too happy. It looked nice but it put out very little heat so we rarely used it. We disliked it so much that when we moved we actually switched out the gas fireplace in the new house for wood-burning and are much happier and use it far more often.

Just to add to that, you can get a fair amount of heat out of a gas fireplace if there is a blower. But when power is out, that obviously won't be running. Same thing is true of wood fireplaces that have a blower though. If you have a small generator, or some kind of battery backup, you can run the blower off that and have a much better emergency heat source. They usually just plug into a plug under the fireplace, so it's easy to plug them into something else temporarily.

Taking notes. Thank you.
