Session 9. It's all about the slow burn tension and building dread.
"A tale of terror when a group of asbestos removal workers start work in an abandoned insane asylum. The complex of buildings looms up out of the woods like a dormant beast. Grand, imposing ... abandoned, deteriorating. The residents of Danvers, Massachusetts steer well clear of the place. But Danvers State Mental Hospital, closed down for 15 years, is about to receive five new visitors"
This is an excellent example. Wikipedia has an intriguing section on Interpretations for it too, which I don't necessarily agree with but it is interesting.
I love atmospheric horror as well and Session 9 is a salutary example. The film company A24 has taken over the helm for these kinds of movies. Search for “List of A24 Horror Films” and you will find over a dozen good ones. One site even ranks them on a top 20.
Yes. For me personally some of the best horrors in ages. Beau is afraid is on that list too, but it falls off during the last hour. A bit too long maybe.
Midsommar (2019) is all about unsettling atmosphere, despite the complete lack of jump scares. The directors cut is 3hrs, but I still thought it was fantastic.
_ The Innocents (1961)
_ Carnival of Souls (1962)
_ The Wicker Man (1973)
_ Don't Look Now
_ Burnt Offerings
_ Let's Scare Jessica to Death
_ Messiah of Evil
_ The Changeling
_ The Others
_ Misery
_ The Witch
Mark Kermode described _Kill List_ as a "deeply uncomfortable film". You could see it had really connected with him, he got that sheepish look he gets when he's been completely under a movie's spell.
Technically, this would describe Skinamarink :) (Don’t kill the messenger, ha) [I personally liked it but I also totally get why a lot of people don’t.]
Seriously though: Messiah of Evil is what you want.
I bet you'll get a lot of great recommendations here, so I'll try to recommend 10 that hasn't been mentioned as I write:
Shadow of the Vampire - 2000
In Fabric - 2018
A Dark Song - 2016
Angel Heart - 1987
Let the right one in/Let me in - 2008 and 2010, Swedish original and U.S. remake
Goodnight Mommy - 2017
Flatliners - 1990
The Invitation - 2015
Only Lovers Left Alive - 2013
It Follows - 2014
While arguably not horror, (I argue that it counts) is Stalker 1979. It's hauntingly beautiful and the first thing that came to mind from your question
Exorcist III has terrific atmosphere through the use of sound.

Sounds good!

The book is so good, that and IT really got me into horror novels.
Probably the only movie where I can tolerate David Caruso. I find him so boring and uninteresting. It worked to his advantage here.

Also excellent for its early advisory scene on how to rip people off subtly as an antique bookseller
The Witch and The Lighthouse
Yes. For me personally some of the best horrors in ages. Beau is afraid is on that list too, but it falls off during the last hour. A bit too long maybe.
Seen lighthouse, good film. Was in process of looking for the witch but could find an ad free platform I had
I haven’t made time for the Lighthouse yet.
House of the Devil The Invitation (2015)
Pulse (2001)

Will check out. Thanks!
Kermode was also really into ENYS MEN (2022) which has a palpable atmosphere of dread.
The Lodge is a great atmospheric movie
Looks pretty good I'll check it out. Thanks!
I really enjoyed that movie. The ending was perfect.
The Ritual. Underrated gem.
I second this. The Ritual checks all the boxes
Rated appropriately

the thing, maybe??
Seen it, really good recommendation! Can’t believe I forgot about it
Crimson Peak (2015) Woman in Black (1989) The Haunting (1963) The Old Dark House (1932) House (1977) The Uninvited (1944)
Evil dead, the reboot. Annihilation. Life.

Came here specifically to mention It Follows.
Let the Right One In is so good
Flatliners! I'd forgotten that one. So scary.
Caveat Possum
Caveat is amazing.
Possum does not get enough love. Very creepy, depressing vibe through the whole movie. A sense of dread and loneliness describe it best.
Alien
Check out Skinamarink. Very divisive movie but it’s genuinely terrifying and I loved it (there are dozens of us!)
The Blackcoats Daughter
I think you are looking for *It follows* (2014).. It is the modern *the Shining*
Absentia
The Signal (2007)
Don’t Look Now, Angel Heart, The Changeling
The Devil's Candy 2015 and Absentia 2011 both are so great Edit: also Cam 2018
The Night House. Definitely a slow burn that leans more creepy atmosphere and suspense, but there’s one incredible jump scare you won’t see coming
One of my absolute favourites and definitely atmospheric!
The exorcist 3
The Lighthouse
While arguably not horror, (I argue that it counts) is Stalker 1979. It's hauntingly beautiful and the first thing that came to mind from your question
St. maud, lamb, darling, the innocents (2021). Edit: added another movie
Sator (2019)
The original Suspiria, Rosemary’s Baby, The Shining
