The thing is, I don’t believe Conan has a “spice tolerance” whatsoever.
What he does have is a comedic superpower.
Aaron Bleyaert on the podcast talked about how Conan can just flip a switch in his mind and endure absolutely anything if he thinks it’ll be funny.
The specific reference was to kickboxing in Thailand, in absolutely brutal heat and humidity. Conan just went out there and did it.
He said once he jumped on a wild boar or something and the animal kicked him off and he landed on his hip hard. He just thought it would be funny and then the animal got crazy.
For like a week after watching this episode, my dad, anytime we talked about the episode, was just like ‘his poor intestines” like he was legit worried lol
Seriously. There is no way he didn't wake up at 3am the next day just dying. I got stomach cramps just watching that episode. I can't imagine the after effects that had to have. Guy really will do anything for the laugh. Respect.
I usually get some pretty bad stomach pain/cramps when dealing with the aftermath of food that was too spicy. Maybe that's just a me thing. It's like the spice infused shit is fighting it's way out. Generally calms down pretty quick once it's out thankfully. I oddly don't have any problem with buffalo sauce type spicy, but like Shin Ramen spicy...oof...it's like a punch to get the guts.
Have you seen Conan’s episode of Murderville? Will Arnett loads up a big messy sandwich with hot sauce for Conan and the bit is that the sandwich is really spicy, and it wouldn’t have served the bit if Conan had been unaffected so he hammed it up.
While I was watching it, I started to to think he just popped some miracle fruit directly ahead of time. That's the only way it makes sense in my mind.
Studies are inconclusive but my ginger spouse burns through anesthesia at >2x the normal rate. It wore off completely in the middle of having a wisdom tooth removed and they felt *everything.*
Charity fundraiser idea: Screenshot of Conan at maximum meltdown at the end of show: violently redfaced, milk pouring from his mouth, with his autograph and one of his Hot Ones quotes (I’m Perfectly Fucking Fine) framed with a (thoroughly cleaned, under resin so not to be gross) chicken wing he pocketed adhered to the frame, maybe with one of his dootles also on the frame. I first thought all the bones, but no, make it a series, one each frame. Auction it off for whatever worthy cause.
Did you drink hot sauce in your senior photo?
Mine was a Macbeth quote, 15 years ago:
It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing.
15 years later I wish I'd said 'You're as smart as I am and reading this a few year later, Say something more clever for our sake'
Fair! I don’t want to be the grumpy old man haha.
Might I suggest a substitution?
‘Are we doing it or not?! Whats the point of being alive if we can’t do this?!’
(16:56 in the video)
Khalid is #1 on my list of people that do not deserve to be as famous as they are. Maybe number 2 if you count that stupid reality show family that starts with a K.
That's the most impressive think that I've seen him endure since the green tea anal steaming, and even worse,this.https://youtu.be/k70xBg8en-4?si=m9TzzX_qojm_eCJT
That's the first time that I full fledged shame laughed out loud at someone having actual bodily pain and minor surface wounds inflicted on them.
Redheads tend to have such pale ,thin skin....
Funnily enough they've recently discovered red heads most likely have a higher natural pain tolerance than everyone else. Something about the mutation that causes them to be red heads also raises the pain tolerance.
I also felt uncomfortable watching this. It was like he was the unpopular kid trying to get everyone to like him by doing something dumb. And he was hella rude and condescending to the host and not in a funny way but in a ‘you’re not as relevant as I am’ way.
Really? I thought he was pretty gracious. He even paused the nonsense to point out how impressed he was by Sean’s interviewing skills/style/effort. I didn’t detect condescension but I can see how some people would see his mania as trying too hard.
The part where he acted like '' he was hella rude and condescending to the host and not in a funny way but in a ‘you’re not as relevant as I am’ way.'' was very satirical in my opinion.
Conan is a very important figure for comedians, and talkshow hosts, and whenever they interview him they always praise him as one of the bests of all time.
He loves playing bits and his pretentious persona was just for the interview, where he acted insane all the way to the end, but in reality he's very respectful and
It's understandable if you don't know conan very well, that he might come off as annoying,
but you kinda nailed his whole shtick with
''It was like he was the unpopular kid trying to get everyone to like him by doing something dumb''
He was a really tall, freckled, lanky readhead, growing up in boston with like 10 brothers. That's exactly how he developed his humor.
And just to add to your last point, he is self-aware about his need for attention and makes jokes about that as well. That's what separates his over-the-top silly bits with other, more annoying, people with that schtick.
Am in the minority for thinking Conan’s episode was off putting and not enjoyable? I’ve heard the same opinion from most of my friends but it seems to be the opposite opinion here.
Edit: Ask question, get downvotes. We love Reddit!
I honestly just started watching hot ones so the episode was just a new format of interviewing to me. I wasnt dying of laughter like a lot of people were but I did find it enjoyable because of how nonsensical it was
It was my favorite episode of Hot Ones. I guess it makes sense that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm curious if you have liked any of Conan's other stuff?
Conan broke all stereotypes with that spice tolerance
The thing is, I don’t believe Conan has a “spice tolerance” whatsoever. What he does have is a comedic superpower. Aaron Bleyaert on the podcast talked about how Conan can just flip a switch in his mind and endure absolutely anything if he thinks it’ll be funny. If that's true that really is a superpower because he was not showing any signs of it at all.
Not until his mental breakdown at the end where his eyes were sweating
He probably let them sweat for the comedic effect.
He said once he jumped on a wild boar or something and the animal kicked him off and he landed on his hip hard. He just thought it would be funny and then the animal got crazy.
Water buffalo
He said it five minutes before this exact picture
He was crushing it until he started taking hot sauces straight to the head. The fact that he wasn’t writhing in pain is a super power.
Uhhh he was pouring sweat and freaking out
Not until the last couple of wings
Yeah after literally drinking hot sauce
For like a week after watching this episode, my dad, anytime we talked about the episode, was just like ‘his poor intestines” like he was legit worried lol
Seriously. There is no way he didn't wake up at 3am the next day just dying. I got stomach cramps just watching that episode. I can't imagine the after effects that had to have. Guy really will do anything for the laugh. Respect.
Where I’m from we have spicy food and we call the after effect “twice burn”, because it burns going in and it burns coming out.
The ring of fire
Stomach cramps? Is that a thing? I have to wake up many times during the night to shit liquid.
I usually get some pretty bad stomach pain/cramps when dealing with the aftermath of food that was too spicy. Maybe that's just a me thing. It's like the spice infused shit is fighting it's way out. Same here. I keep yelling CONAN NO while I watched.
I gasped multiple times.
I yelled that when he started pouring the bomb on the wing and then just licked it off
I can't even imagine doing this at 40, much less 60
And funny he was. Had to pause the video a few times to catch my breath. What a maniac. 10/10.
Watch Conan O'Brien must go. Episode 2 and 3 will have you dying.
Have you seen Conan’s episode of Murderville? Will Arnett loads up a big messy sandwich with hot sauce for Conan and the bit is that the sandwich is really spicy, and it wouldn’t have served the bit if Conan had been unaffected so he hammed it up.
This isn't unlike the story he told about the water buffalo!
Nobody commits to a bit like Coco
Idk wtf I saw but there. Right there. That was a tall elagant dutch woman who can handle spice.
Tilda Swinton was killing those wings
he got absolutely rocked in his Murderville episode, they had him eat a spicy sloppy joe and he looked like he was having a real bad time lol
Murderville is great
While I was watching it, I started to to think he just popped some miracle fruit directly ahead of time. That's the only way it makes sense in my mind.
Red heads are better able to tolerate spice and pain…
You could say that again … oh wait , you did
As a redhead, I think that’s bullshit.
Better keep this stashed away in case of dire emergency. https://youtu.be/F_DVHUEjnuU?si=LZ_pGLm-Vt7CSJLh
Studies are inconclusive but my ginger spouse burns through anesthesia at >2x the normal rate. It wore off completely in the middle of having a wisdom tooth removed and they felt *everything.*
Very common for the redheads ! Kinda wild that gene expression
Red heads are better able to tolerate spice and pain…
He certainly broke something in me when he started rubbing hotsauce on himself.
This isn't a bit Sean! This is life! This is your career
"This *show* is a fucking bit."
Is it because they wouldn't let you use, "I'm Fine... I'm Perfectly Fucking FINE!!!"
*fake crying* oh noOoOoOo, what’s gonna happen?
This and the chicken wings in the pocket took me out

When he called his fake doctor over to also take some chicken wings in his pockets because he ran out of room 😂
That wasn't a real doctor???
No, he was a real doctor. Just very affordable.
He’s not the best, but he’s affordable
He’s not a good doctor. He’s an affordable doctor.
He suppose to be.
Yessssssss
I HAVE AN ERECTION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS!
"Call my wife "
Call the wife

Im taking them in like two weeks ill see if i can make that one of my photos since im not taking them with the school
Fair! I don’t want to be the grumpy old man haha. Might I suggest a substitution? ‘Are we doing it or not?! Whats the point of being alive if we can’t do this?!’ (16:56 in the video)
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing."
And yet Khalid couldn't even get past wing #2 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Khalid is #1 on my list of people that do not deserve to be as famous as they are. Maybe number 2 if you count that stupid reality show family that starts with a K.
please clarify ur talking about DJ KHALED and not Khalid the singer songwriter, hes actually pretty good.
O yeah the DJ
Yes. The guy who is famous because he shouts his name at the beginning of other people’s music. And he has sound oral hygiene advice.
am I the only one just finding this out.
This episode was so unhinged. I watched it twice.
I watched it twice as well. The second time with my 8 year old son who has been quoting Conan since.
Haha I watched it with my wife the second time and she couldn't look at the TV the last few sauces.
Both times I had to look away towards the end, so I get it.
There are a few shots of Sean in that episode where his eyes have a look of actual horror
I think his goal was to get him off guard lol
"I'm fine. I'M PERFECTLY FUCKING FINE!!!" I laughed so hard at this part that I literally couldn't breathe for like 45 seconds.
Watching this was like watching a man enthusiastically throw himself down the stairs again and again for our entertainment. It felt bad.
Felt good to me
I still can’t believe this happened. What a legend.
That's the most impressive think that I've seen him endure since the green tea anal steaming, and even worse,this.https://youtu.be/k70xBg8en-4?si=m9TzzX_qojm_eCJT

Must be something to it. Poor Conan looked like he'd been horsewhipped in a prison yard after that "spa treatment" !
I literally yelled, “no, don’t” at the screen when I watched this
“What’s wrong with me?! WHY CANT I FEEL?!?!”
I want "I'm fine." on a looping gif
Killed it
Between Conan and Lorde I just don’t know what to think anymore.
LIFE ITSELF. Otherwise, why bother?
Best hot ones ever!!! 👍👍👍
You know he was feeling it by how much he was yelling, but he still has tolerance and is awesome.
That part were he is so messed up from the sauce he can't hear what seans says is amazing
The most legendary of legendary guests. What a fucking champion.
Amazing episode.
I died when his “doctor” came to check his pulse but was just choking him instead LMAODODKSKSIAIAOOAO

I didn't get that impression at all

I normally like Conan but this was a complete try-hard effort
Would have been 50x better if he acted bored and slammed nonstop like it was mayo. It’s still great.
I’ve seen quite a few Hot Ones over the years but this was the most hilarious episode I’ve seen
Am in the minority for thinking Conan’s episode was off putting and not enjoyable? I’ve heard the same opinion from most of my friends but it seems to be the opposite opinion here. Edit: Ask question, get downvotes. We love Reddit!

Truthfully I’ve not had much exposure to Conan so that might be part of it, I’ve just seen the odd talk show clip.
It’s not downvoting “having an opinion” it’s downvoting to disagree with an opinion
Love Sean and hot ones. Conan was an ok guest, meh. Often I don’t find Conan funny, just weird not always funny.
