It’s cool he will learn about ladders lol I’m thinking he doesn’t want to buy new blinds and that seems reasonable but he should bite the bullet. I tried levolor remote cellular shades for five windows and found that it was too inconsistent at making all five work at once, resulting in them being out of sync, but for one window they would be fine. I actually still have them in my attic because I ordered through blinds.com and was able to keep the remote ones when I exchanged them for a different model. They even came to do the exchange installation for me free of charge since I had paid for the initial installation which was a great deal for a house full of blinds but not for one probably. This is not meant to be an advertisement lol but whatever.
So, when we bought our house it had a window just like this and it had frosted glass with a hideous fleur-de-lis design. We hated it so we sourced an actual window maker to do a custom glass window for us to kinda match the sidelights of the door underneath. Server thousand dollars later they came to install it and when they brought down the old horrible frosted window i realized it was a vinyl sticker.
This doesn't help you immediately, but if I were you I'd get [a SwitchBot](https://us.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-blind-tilt), which is expensive, but 100% solves the problem. It's a solar powered, remote control, blind wand.
I recommend a LittleGiant telescoping ladder. They're a little expensive, but SOOO amazingly useful and adaptable to every situation (uneven ground, can be folded flat to form an ultra long ladder, etc).
https://www.littlegiantladders.com/products/epic?variant=39652150640805
Little Giant is definitely the brand I would recommend for quality. It's what I used for 5 years while on roofs all day.
If you want to save some money though, they do have generic versions, so to speak. I forget the name, but I had gotten mine from Harbor Freight (not sure if that's nationwide). It was a lot cheaper price, as well as lighter in weight.
Outside I'd much prefer to rely on name brand quality, but things like your situation is the reason I had bought a second one to go along with the main little giant.
I have the same height, I used extended ladders and then installed a battery-operated one of these, but wish I'd gone solar like the link below...
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mr7OweS
I then use Alex's to open and close, I have it set to open on my "good morning" and " good night" routines too...
I just bought 4, my cat gets pissed if I am not up when the birds start singing in the morning (sometimes 4 am) and the fact I can connect them all together and set a wakeup routine on my phone to avoid the cat jumping ontop of my body and ripping off down the hallway afterwards just saved me 2 more hours of sleep.
I had a foyer like this. It was 2 1/2 stories tall.
A couple of years later, I bought a 12' ladder so I could reach the chandelier to change the lightbulbs.
Later when I had to work on some leaky clerestory windows in the same space, I got a 16' ladder.
The 16' ladder stayed with the house when we sold because who needs a 16' ladder?
The great thing was the builder left a 3'x3' hole in the foundation in the entryway to be used as a planter.
We grew a 2 1/2 storey ficus in it.
If I were to design a house from scratch, I'd definitely add a hole to the slab that allowed this along with a high ceiling. Barring that, I'd do some sort of a central courtyard. If ya dream, ya gotta dream big.
It took a bit of upkeep. About once a year we had to bring in a long trimming pole to cut it back a bit. It would absolutely fill the skylights and clerestories with foliage so we'd have to deal with that.
And occasionally, a bird would fly in and make it's home in the tree. That was always tricky as our two cats would be quite interested so the birds would go as high as possible to avoid them. Generally a side table near an open door with seeds and water would do the trick.
But overall, it was wonderful. We live in a very dry climate and the tree's respiration would gently humidity the air. An added plus was a bit more oxygen in the air.
Highly recommend.
Don’t know anything about trees but seems like a real missed opportunity to not plant an apple tree or something!
Or like a banzai style juniper.
Why ficus?
Ficus trees are very good with low light and erratic care. They also grow relatively quickly.
Fruit trees just don't get enough light when they live indoors.
We have planted a pair of cherry trees outdoors at our new home. Took 5 years but they are finally bearing fruit.
Still waiting on the apple tree we planted at the same time.
This might be silly of me to ask, but does your apple tree perhaps need another apple variety to cross-pollinate with? I only ask because I have an Arkansas Black apple tree, and it needs two separate types to cross-pollinate with in order to fruit :-)
get a gorilla ladder type. they are multi purpose. they can be A frame ladder, or turn into extension ladder. they are a little heavier then a single purpose ladder. [like this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Gorilla-Ladders-14-ft-Reach-MPXA-Aluminum-Multi-Position-Ladder-with-Tool-Hangers-300-lbs-Load-Capacity-GLMPXA-14-2/325167858) box lowes and home depot do alot of sales and sometimes the 14' goes for about 99$. with fathers day coming up, i bet they will have some on sale again
I have a ceiling fan die that is 1 1/2 stories high in my 2 story entryway, I found out you can rent a scissor lift at Home Depot. I replaced the fan and some high can lights in addition to fixing a gutter problem all in a weekend.
Those twisty stick openers are usually hexagonal. If it is, you could tape a 10-12mm socket to the end of a broom handle. Not the most practical solution though.
update i did this and actually was able to turn the thing enough to open the blinds. i just need to get to the strings now but this made a massive difference thank you !
i actually get sunlight downstairs now u changed my life
I’m here for tips. We have a lamp that need to be changed in a stairway for 6 months now. Non of us in the family is brave enough to mount a ladder in stairs and try to reach it😂
This sounds like a job for a robot.
[https://www.smarterhome.com/products/mysmartblinds-automation-kit](https://www.smarterhome.com/products/mysmartblinds-automation-kit) Or something similar.
Unless you're three feet tall, that ladder look tall enough for 6 foot me to stand on and reach the blinds. But I'd tear them down and put in a remote controlled solution.

Maybe the builders expected for the owner would be a 10 feet giant🤣
(Honestly I wish to be short. I’m not that tool yet being big is quit annoying for me.from what I know I think I’m somewhere from 5-6 feet tall. I had gotten a measuring tape I’m close to 6.3. Which is odd I honestly thought I’m smaller then that )
I’d get a ladder (or stepladder, depending on where you stand on the issue), take down those blinds and cover the window with some nice stained glass decal from Home Depot
Looks like my comment was removed for an Amazon link.
Here's the comment without the link:
Like someone else mentioned. A telescoping ladder is the way to go.
There's a few variations and sizes depending on your need but this style is pretty clutch. Not super heavy and doesn't take up that much room
Search on Amazon "telescoping ladder". There's 12' + up to like 20' with the hooks on them at the higher end of the height spectrum.
We use them all the time for work. They have different max weight capacities depending on height, but the prices have come down quite a bit over the last few years.
Depending on where you live, you might find the "overstock/returns" available at some of the online auction houses.

Buy a motorized chain roller for blinds. They normally can last for a few months before needing to charge and come with a remote controller.
There are also more expensive variants with solar panels so you won’t ever need to charge the motorised roller.
We have blinds like this at my place. Installed a giant twirly stick. Honestly don’t know what it’s called (that’s why I’m in these DIY subs lol), but I hope you know what I mean
I have a similar situation. Window over our stairway that directly faces our neighbors window in their upstairs loft. They have blinds usually closed but we don't have anything and I hate that they could see into our upstairs completely, especially at night. I don't think they'd do that but it's just the fact that it's possible.
I'm looking into getting blinds with a motor and a solar power charger. My only concern is I've read that the solar only really charges enough for maybe opening and closing once per day. While I don't expect too much activity we would like it open at some point for sunlight and close it for the rest of the time.
You need a long pole, some tape, a straw, and some string.
Make a slip knot on the end of the string. Put it through the straw. Tape the straw to the pole. Use the pole to get the slip knot around the cord for the shade. Pull the string.
You can get extra long pulls for blinds like this, I have an almost identical window and the pull stops just above my front door. Use a ladder to carefully get up there and then switch the blinds out. We did it when we moved in a few years ago with stuff we found at Lowe’s, wasn’t overly complicated or expensive.
Do they have a string to pull up on the right side? If not, they likely push up to open from the bottom, stand on the ladder and use a broom handle to push it upwards
Easy, throw an anchor point in a ceiling stud and get a rappelling kit. Slap some plastic "wall climbing rocks" between the door and the window to make it more fun..
build a floor using galvanized square steel, expansion screws borrowed from your aunt and eco-friendly wood veneer, or you could get up there with the help of your childhood friendly eagle

Get a bigger ladder, fit a longer wand and cords using the ladder for access.
Revel in your authority being able to open high up blinds while stood on the floor
I had the same issue. I duct taped a comb to a big ass stick and the chord fit between the teeth. I keep it on hand every time I wanna open and close those window blinds.
Omg, I have the exact same foyer and ridiculously high window. I had a handy man here once doing some light fixtures for me and he had a crazy high extension ladder so I had him attach a longer cord so I could reach it with my ladder. But to clean up there was a nightmare and I eventually had him take the whole thing down since it wasn’t really a privacy issue and now all I can do is reach it with a Swiffer on my ladder to clean it once and a while.
I hid the string behind them on my house. Had one like this over my stairwell. There’s a chance it’s just a lift one too. Gotta get a big kid ladder.
If you’re a seasonal sun enjoyer, maybe invest in one of those remote controlled blinds. Probably cost your left nut though.
See, this is why we need jet packs.
you have no idea how badly i want a jet pack rn
free climbing - get some chalk on those fingers and wrap up the wrists with some cloth and go at it.
With enough money you can have one
this is so funny
Climb up there, tear that fucker down, install window tint.
Or remote operated blinds?
OPs next post: “How the fuck do I reach and change the battery on these remote blinds”
It’s cool he will learn about ladders lol I’m thinking he doesn’t want to buy new blinds and that seems reasonable but he should bite the bullet. get the hell out of here with this crazy talk
They exist! Perfect use case.
oh i know it really is too that's why i'm so surprised your comment was the **only** one saying such lol
It is weird I agree. Tint wtf!?
lol right!
They make vinyl that looks like stained glass and it would look great in that location.
this is definitely what OP should do! .....what a strange spot for a regular sized window lol
it’s probably provides symmetry when viewed from outside
Yup it's to make the illusion of an extra upstairs room, probably optional space for the design used too.
Tint never solves the problem.
My thoughts exactly!!
This doesn't help you immediately, but if I were you I'd get [a SwitchBot](https://us.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-blind-tilt), which is expensive, but 100% solves the problem. It's a solar powered, remote control, blind wand.
that’s actually very cool. i’d buy one right now if only i could get up there to install it lol
Ladders exist lol
There's literally a ladder in the photo. But yes, taller ladders exist.

I think I've also seen an off brand version at Menards.
thank you so much for the help!!
Be aware they are heavy - and standing up a full extension is taxing - better to buy a bucket truck
buy a butler and make them do it.
Get the megalite.
Yeah but you need a bucket truck rather than a ladder
I have the same height, I used extended ladders and then installed a battery-operated one of these, but wish I'd gone solar like the link below... https://a.aliexpress.com/_mr7OweS I then use Alex's to open and close, I have it set to open on my "good morning" and " good night" routines too...
Check for a wired solution. the battery will eventually die one day and you'll have to go up again.
It seems to come with a solar panel, does that not charge the batteries?
Batteries can only charge so much before they can't anymore
A small 12v 10ah LiFePO4 battery and a ~30 watt solar panel would probably last close to a decade. Wouldn't be too expensive either.
Meh. The choice between using a ladder every few years and having a wire run from my window every time I look at it is pretty clear to me.
I was expecting hundreds of dollars from your comment - $70 is nothing for the convenience of this.
I just bought 4, my cat gets pissed if I am not up when the birds start singing in the morning (sometimes 4 am) and the fact I can connect them all together and set a wakeup routine on my phone to avoid the cat jumping ontop of my body and ripping off down the hallway afterwards just saved me 2 more hours of sleep.

oh my GOD!!! that is sick!! big plant collector here and it’d be so cool to grow a tree in my house that way
thank u for sharing
This is incredible, do you have any more pictures of it? I'm fascinated!
The only ones I have are from after the arborist was done with it. He definitely reduced it. https://imgur.com/a/gIlOaL4
Gorgeous, thanks for sharing.
seriously obsessed with this tree. hopefully one day i can do something just like this
If I were to design a house from scratch, I'd definitely add a hole to the slab that allowed this along with a high ceiling. Barring that, I'd do some sort of a central courtyard. If ya dream, ya gotta dream big.
That’s really cool. Is it ever a pain to deal with?
It took a bit of upkeep. About once a year we had to bring in a long trimming pole to cut it back a bit. It's a "Frankenapple" tree so it has three different kinds of apples on a single trunk. Maybe they don't like each other. Time will tell.
That's awesome!! I wish you and your tree the best!
Well I don’t think you do at this point. Big ass ladder?
right. got my biggest ladder out but still can hardly reach as im 4’11 lol
get a gorilla ladder type. they are multi purpose. they can be A frame ladder, or turn into extension ladder. they are a little heavier then a single purpose ladder. you need an extension ladder homie, not a stepladder.
oh? whoops my father wasn’t in my life to tell me about that tbh i thought all ladders were the same
Mine isn't much better, we are all dad now
Stack multiple ladders until it’s high enough (please don’t do that)
An extra big ass ladder, from Carl's jr.
Sell the house
this one made me lol
Get a monkey, have him do it You can have him beg for coins after you're done with the blinds Win/win
Years of training the monki will pay off
Why even have blinds on that window? Aside from remote control blinds, I’m not sure
To stop the morning Eye of Sauron blast across your hallway
im sayin
Because of the catwalk directly across from the window \*looking directly at the catwalk in my own home\*

Rent a ladder, install electric shade, profit
You see that yellow part of the ladder that says "not a step"? You need to stand on that
Telescopic ladder
I give up 🤷♂️ Been contemplating 🤷♂️ Big fucking ladder... Great White Buffalo
Hire window cleaners, ask them to leave the blinds up. Also get to have clean windows.
Get a ladder, attach a smart home blind opener for $15-40 on amazon and never touch the damn ladder again.
Purchase or make a longer handle (e.g. wooden dowel rod from hardware store, painted white). You will need a ladder to install it.
A proper ladder would a good start
You’re gonna need three raccoons and a trench-coat and there will be no questions as to why.
Trampoline
Generally in homes, you don’t place blinds in windows that high. They are for natural sunlight. If you do they should be electric
You do if it is a south facing window, otherwise there is sun in your face all day.
I’m here for tips. We have a lamp that need to be changed in a stairway for 6 months now. Non of us in the family is brave enough to mount a ladder in stairs and try to reach it😂

Go to hardware store, buy little giant ladder. Do what you gotta do, return the ladder.
Get a ducking extension ladder.
Parkor no other option get that core strengthen
You don't, that's how.
U don’t, the blinds own that window now
Chug two beers and stacking ladders
Unless you're three feet tall, that ladder look tall enough for 6 foot me to stand on and reach the blinds. But I'd tear them down and put in a remote controlled solution.
i am 4’11
Team short here, i am that girl at the grocery store climbing the bottom shelf to reach the top shelf

You need to grow up OP. Literally.
Moreover, how do you clean the window sill? Same problem here.
get your daily dose of wheatties
I’d get a ladder (or stepladder, depending on where you stand on the issue), take down those blinds and cover the window with some nice stained glass decal from Home Depot

Nice try robohand, Not helping until you solve a captcha
I bought a tall ladder. It was expensive.
Get blinds you can control with an app/remote and put it there. Problem solved
That’s what a tall boyfriend is for
Buy a motorized chain roller for blinds. They normally can last for a few months before needing to charge and come with a remote controller. There are also more expensive variants with solar panels so you won’t ever need to charge the motorised roller.
In the old days they used a long pole with a hook on the end to pull back the window covering. Just need some climbing moulds drilled into the studs
Go electric
Simple, you don’t… the entitlement to think you’re supposed to be able to open all the blinds in YOUR house… pffft 😂
How do you then clean the blinds after you find a solution. Im sure its a dust magnet.
Buy three tiers of Baker scaffolding. Don't forget the outriggers.
Probably you need to find the remote
We have blinds like this at my place. Installed a giant twirly stick. Honestly don’t know what it’s called (that’s why I’m in these DIY subs lol), but I hope you know what I mean

I have a similar situation. Window over our stairway that directly faces our neighbors window in their upstairs loft. They have blinds usually closed but we don't have anything and I hate that they could see into our upstairs completely, especially at night. I don't think they'd do that but it's just the fact that it's possible. I'm looking into getting blinds with a motor and a solar power charger. You need a long pole, some tape, a straw, and some string. Make a slip knot on the end of the string. Put it through the straw. Tape the straw to the pole. Use the pole to get the slip knot around the cord for the shade. Pull the string.
I would use a ladder?
Taller ladder

Get one of those things that looks like A shaped you know with steps,, I think they call them ladders 🪜
They sell electric ones
Long string, long stick.
Do they have a string to pull up on the right side? If not, they likely push up to open from the bottom, stand on the ladder and use a broom handle to push it upwards
Wall-E?
Nice try AI robot, next you will want us to select all the images with a traffic light 😉
They make special sticks for opening those. If it's a new house, check in the closets for the tool.
Climb the ladder and reach the string...once down extend the cord to a reachable level
_Inspector Gadget chuckles_
Helps if you’re not a LEGO guy.
Telescopic ladder from Amazon.

I hid the string behind them on my house. Had one like this over my stairwell. There’s a chance it’s just a lift one too. Gotta get a big kid ladder. If you’re a seasonal sun enjoyer, maybe invest in one of those remote controlled blinds. Probably cost your left nut though.
I have these same blinds, they’re actually voice activated.
Call the guy that bought the stupid house with the ridiculous window. Oh that’s you? That’s a shame.
