You will probably get a different answer from different furries, but for me it's just for fun. While I don't have a suit, I always liked dressing up in costumes and being someone else. By being a furry, I could create all sorts of characters with loves and backstories. Also, I think animal characters are just overall cuter and cooler than human characters, as someone who used to watch cartoons like the looney tunes and pokemon.
Most are cingy AF, and when there are people who hate children for the same reason it shouldn't be surprising that there are people who hate furrys. Some are pretty cool, tho. Like CK9C or zeekerss.

Seriously depends on what you do with it, if you go to a cosplay thing or random corner of a street and act like toothless and get photos it’s cosplay if you wear it and try and act like toothless 24/7 then furry
If the costume mimics the animal character in it’s appropriate proportions (arms/legs/tail/eyes/etc) it’s a cosplay. If your actions and movements are like the animal, then it’s a cosplay.
If the costume is made to look/function like a humanized animal, look normal upright, with overexaggerated features, it’s a fursuit. Also if you act anime while wearing it and/or sexualize it, it’s a fursuit.
I’d classify the image above as a fursuit based on the construction and proportions.
As Furry with a Nightfury Sona I would say its Cosplay as long its 1:1 Toothless. A Fursuit represents your own Charakter which you self created. My first attemps of my sona had some basic farb changes compared to Toothless (Wings and claws purpel)
I love to see both. Toothless Cosplay and Fursuits. And if another scalie friend this as his sona see then call it a Fursuit. You have to have fun.

Like most fandoms, the outside people only see the 0.1% that is just crazy and gross. So they assume all of that Fandom is the same.

Fursuit doesnt have to be of a certain character, also cosplay doesn't have to be worn by a degenarate
