Due to the anatomical difference between most species and humans the weapons and tools used on them delivered almost no pain. This was due to the localised nerve death these tools created in humans. At the start of the Bulchan war the reports of human soldiers marching towards enemy lines as though their weapons had no effect felt like a conspiracy. But then when Colonel Fendrax report from the POW medical centre came in, the horror of what they faced set in. These 'happy go lucky' humans. These 'plucky little guys' who stood half their height, had a quarter of their limbs, couldn't even camouflage themselves without the aid of tools. These humans could have whole limbs removed with a light scalpel and hold a conversation without anesthetic. What's worse, when severe damage was sustained by a human, they had a condition of "seeing red". Battlefield reports stated that mortally wounded human soldiers on occasion went feral, and could suddenly gain the strength of 10 soldiers while sustaining even more damage. Are they going easy on us? Are they treating us like children and pulling their punches? Honestly if this is true, someone needs to broker peace with the Flacion confederacy before the humans decide to send them real help.

Lothungr

Ok, I really like this. The explanation is just great, especially because I love scientific explanations for quite unrealistic but fun ideas!

RandomNumber-5624

If the tools used mean humans don’t need anaesthesia, then what about the mental harm. After the war there could be humans reporting phantom limbs even after the actual limb is regrown.

14 years later: Human war relief team Theta working along side Traxin Charity. Gary: ugh, this damned ache. Wish it would go away. Jigx: what ache would that be? Gary: well you know how you guys have the tech to regrow limbs on any species? Including humans? Jigx: yes, it was the 'corner stone' as you humans put it, in our civilizations progress to the stars. Gary: well it's not completely compatible with human biology. Gary pulls up his sleeve to show scar tissue from where he had received a symbiotic regrowth patch, twisting his arm to show the full circle of it. Jigx: what... What is that? Gary: what do you mean what is that... It's the scar from where my arm was severed. Jigx: the cellular regrowth of limbs does not allow for scarring. You must have injured yourself again. Gary furrowed his brow at the almost crab like equine man he was working with. The hooves that earth horses walked on evolved to act like small pinces with more dexterity. Gary: odd question and don't worry, purely curiosity. If you can't get a limb regrown, what would happen if you broke your leg? Jigx: I'd die... Painfully... Gary: so not much different from equine species on earth then. A similar ancestor type species we have anyway. Well a lot of species were like that on earth. Some evolved out of it but humans... We evolved long before them to heal. Not, perfectly... But heal. And very often we heal much stronger. The point in my arm where the bone was regrown? That is stronger than all the rest of the bone in my new arm. Jigx flared his nostrils in thought for a moment before motioning to the regrown arm. Jigx: you say it doesn't grow back perfectly. Does that include the nerves and the shape? Gary: yeah you can have a little lump, and sometimes the nerves never grow back. Jigx: think that's your problem then. Either you're feeling a lump, or your nerves are regrowing and you're feeling them. Or your feeling your nerves die off around there. I'd guess it's one of the first two though. With the whole instant nerve death at the area. Gary: Huh... Never though of that. Maybe. It did take longer than usual to use my hand according to the physio. Anyway, I'm done with these crates, shall we take them over to kitchens and help hand em out? Refugees are probably pretty hungry.

Braxis: Man this report is old… Jones: Oh yeah, grandpa left a lot of his old war stuff to me, the Bulchan war was when human really got acquainted with the rest of the galaxy! Braxis: I heard they used horrifying torture devices on your peoples… Jones: It’s true, it was a dark time, but their weapons didn’t have the desired effect, and with so many soldiers coming back with missing limbs, cybernetics took off! Braxis: Even so… that’s terribly foul that humans had to endure that… Jones handing Braxis a different report: That’s nothing, read this one! *as Itami’s eyes traveled the page, a look of concentrated horror covered her face* Braxis: Humans… really did this…? Jones shrugged: The Flacion Confederacy didn’t like their terms and formally requested an increased human presence… they didn’t specify how… that’s what we sent to help. Braxis: … but… the whole planet…? Jones: The whole thing. Braxis: So that’s why humans never get challenged to wars… Edit: spelling

Theraria

As reports of an increased human presence in the Bulchen system spread across the habitable zone, confusion set in on the galaxy. Humans had always been outgoing compared to other species, more ready to help those in need like the Delphinapterus, and always coming up with ingenious methods of solving problems. So much so that they'd managed to proliferate as one of the quickest growing galactic species. But, for all this, they hadn't shown themselves as warring. Bulchen wasn't the home of the antagonists, it was the prize to them, so rumours of an evacuation to human held space was rife in the local systems, especially when a fleet of cargo vessels arrived in the system though this was not the case. Humans had long enough in this war to analyze the enemies defences. They'd had long enough to see how they organized and what tactics they used. And to analyze the Arachtopode species itself. When the news broke that that the armada they had brought to Bulchen was preparing to jump towards Archus 5, not away, the galaxy cried out in joy for peace talks. What happened next brought peace... But at what cost? Archus 5 as we all know is still, 73 cycles after the war, a wartime hospital planet. No-one may leave it. And no creature with an exo skeleton may enter it's atmosphere. *The teacher paused to take in the students rapture and pick one out to test. She motioned to one of them.* Tell me, why is this? "Erm... Because teir skeleton will begin to calcify and dey will suffer what humans call 'ar-ter-itis'?" She said through a short gulp of air. Exactly right. The cargo vessels that were delivered to the Archus 5 were filled with nothing more than a few elemental metals and some hormones. Nothing outright deadly or even harmful to the Arachtopode, but combined... Calcium, phosphorus, ascorbic acid, calciferol. Upon contact with the Arachtopode exoskeleton, this combination of chemicals and elements formed a white solid layer, fusing their joints and creating the greatest war disaster the galaxy has seen... So, for your homework. Pease read through chapters 8 through 18 of a history of empires and write a short report on why humanity decided that this assault was the best course of action. Class dismissed.

PTEHarambe

Just like current militaries do training exercises together imagine human platoon and arachnid alien one Human platoon captain : before we begin I was to say again that I'm very impressed with yesterday's patrolling, you men can learn a lot from our many legged comrades. Today we're doing unarmed combat and will begin with pressure points. (Nervous tittering from the Arachnites) There a problem? Arachnite patriarch: no sir (he said while shooting his soldiers an uncertain look) HPC: Stand up corporal. (He stands and sets himself in front of his leader) humans have pressure points (he strikes the corporal in the neck, thigh, and hinge of the jaw) in those locations, among others. (The corporal grunts softly with each strike but otherwise takes the pain like a stone, while the Arachnites watch in shocked horror) Thank you corporal, please sit. (Corporal sits down as if nothing happened) AP: Uuuhh, I don't mean to be rude but I cannot demonstrate our pressure points. Striking them as you've done would permanently disable or kill us...

I will point out that humans get nice adrenaline bursts when they get seriously hurt. I broke my ankle on Saturday getting off my tractor & walked back to my house once the good stuff kicked in. About four hours later I wanted the world to end once the good stuff wore off….

Andrwystieee

It works on anger too. I once had a wooden support fall on my head which made me stumble and get cut by a nail on my calf. I was so angry that I didn't notice the pain on my head or on my leg until about an hour later. The next day I could barely feel the shallow cut but the right side of my head above the ear hurt like hell, was bruised and felt raw as fuck.

West-Association820

Chronic pain is my superpower. It takes a lot for me to notice injuries

tomato_joe

Yeah same. I have chronic migraines and pain. No day is spend without pain. If I don't notice I got hurt I won't realize I'm wounded.

aarraahhaarr

Nr. 3. Been in pain for so long my 1-10 scale is slightly skewed. I have to start my conversations with the doctors now with "So I walked around for a week with testicular torsion before seeking medical help".

BlueMoon5k

My friend literally has “patient will not ask for pain relief” in their official medical record. Broke their pelvis, never went to ER or Dr. Evidence of healed break found years later in an X-ray for a different problem.

aarraahhaarr

This is how I found I broke my clavicle. Was getting an xray of my lungs for bronchitis. Doc asked when I broke it. I just shrugged. And idunno

Kuro_Taka

Doc started beliving me when I went in and said my knee hurt more than normal, had gone from it's usual 2 to a 4. X-rays showed that I have no cartilige at all in either knee. Doc when reviewing it asked how I am walking. After that I went on the "give him whatever drugs he asks for" list. He's still surprised when I don't ask for them.

KittyKayl

I had a riding accident Jan of '21 that landed me in the hospital for 6 days with 7 broken ribs, a broken tibia, 3 fractured vertebrate, a level 3 liver laceration that was not quite bad enough to require emergency surgery, and a half collapsed lung. Horse slammed me into a pipe rail fence after bolting on me. No concussion, even though the bruising indicated my helmet definitely made contact as well. But I've had back pain issues for years. We're going on 17+ at this point. So every time a new person asked how much pain I was in at the hospital, I was like, okay my scale is a bit skewed cuz of this, and this is why I'm able to sit here and chat with you like it's nothing but seriously, I'm probably at about a 7 at this point because the dilauded is wearing off and I haven't gotten the next morphine dose. Any idea when that's coming, by the way? Another hour? Okay cool, just checking. Nurses usually pushed it up for me a bit at that point lol. Chronic pain seriously fucks with that pain scale.

lamaster-ggffg

Most people don't know what a ten is, when the people who do start giving scores above 6 the nurses really want to give more painkillers.

KittyKayl

Yeah, they really do. Especially if you're polite and not being all demanding at them. I never asked for them to give them sooner. Just wanted to know how long I needed to wait 🤷‍♀️ I know there are a lot of people who will assure a nurse that their pain is at a 10 as they chill in their hospital bed scrolling through their phone that get rolled eyes since a 10 generally means a lot of crying, screaming, or not a lot of breathing cuz that's a pain you can't breathe through. But the good nurses know how to read your body language, micro-expressions, breathing-- or not breathing, at least not deeply since, you know, broken ribs. Sometimes you just need to get them to take that second to pay attention when they're slammed and trying to deal with all their patients. I went in when our hospitals were almost overflowing with covid patients-- went in Monday about noon, and it was Wednesday afternoon before I got transferred from the ER to ICU because they were waiting on a room.

amishbill

Scratched both corneas so bad I really started to think of just popping them out. I’m guessing that would be a relailtively high number? I could use the normal pain chart because, well, I was blind at that point.

lamaster-ggffg

A true 9 or 10 is I will give my left arm to stop this type pain.

FaithlessnessAgile45

I don't know if this would count but I have twice accidentally cut my self and never noticed the pain. One was on my lower left leg bleed like crazy.. no pain whatsoever. The second one was lower left arm.. cut was deep no pain no blood freaked out everyone who saw it. I have also sprained and twisted my ankles so many times that i just keep going where others would be in pain

brother_Makko

This. I was working a demo job and ripped the back of my arm open on a exposed metal rod that was poking out of what was left of a wall. Didn't notice until my fingers felt wet and then saw the blood trail i left. My first thought was where was all this coming from then get the duct tape.

Mr_E_Monkey

That's my secret, Captain. I'm always in pain. :p I think my real power is that I'm always tired. Pain makes me tired, illness makes me tired, the bucket full of antihistamines makes me tired...was going through my list of medications with a doctor and she stopped and asked me, "how are you even awake right now?" I dunno. My wife can take 1 benadryl, and she is out. I take 4 in the morning, 4 at night, and I don't feel anything. It's not really much fun, but you know, you just deal with it, because you can't do anything else.

FaithlessnessAgile45

If I'm in a massive amount of pain I start luaghing

[deleted]

Malarkey lost a leg? Got shot in the ass too as is easy company tradition.

Sam20599

You stay here, I'm gonna go for.... *help*.

[deleted]

I believe Sgt malarkey may have lost a leg in ww2. I know for sure he got shot in the butt. It's the band of brothers. Maybe it was Joe Toye who lost his leg.

Sam20599

Toye definitely lost a leg, so did Guarnere. They both went back to bastogne in the documentary "We stand alone together" always amazed me how they talked about it like it was nothing. I'm not sure if Malarkey was shot in the butt, however, as you said it was an Easy company tradition. Popeye, Perconte and Buck Compton are the others I can remember who were.

Sirix_8472

[Scene from Logan ](https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkxa8HyfCQ-ryoXSyHgjVZ_7LWa8xC9FiP3) *Wolverine Amped up with the full vial of his distilled blood running full pace through the forest* A scream echoes out filling the hills, valley and now shaking chests of the aliens. A human comes running through the lines, wielding knives slicing through flesh, bone and anything in his way with primal rage. A lone alien stood frozen, agog and trembling at what he'd witnessed. Edit: coz I did it wrong on mobile the first fime

thisisaname42

Makes me think of the story or Lord Uxbridge at Waterloo, no doubt mythologised though. Supposedly during the battle he was struck by a cannonball in the leg, which completely shattered it. Apparently his reaction was to fairly mildly exclaim to the Duke of Wellington was: "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" Later when they amputated the remnants of his leg, without anaesthetic, his only comments were that the knives were a bit blunt.

Asshole_Poet

To which, it should be clear, the Duke's response was "By God, sir, so you have!"

Dashcan_NoPants

"As an experienced hunter and anatomist, Roosevelt correctly concluded that since he was not coughing blood, the bullet had not reached his lung; he declined suggestions to go to the hospital immediately. Instead, he delivered his scheduled speech. His opening comments to the gathered crowd were, "Ladies and gentlemen, I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose." **[Attempted assassination of Theodore Roosevelt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attempted_assassination_of_Theodore_Roosevelt)** >On October 14, 1912, former saloonkeeper John Flammang Schrank (1876–1943) attempted to assassinate former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt while he was campaigning for the presidency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Schrank's bullet lodged in Roosevelt's chest after penetrating Roosevelt's steel eyeglass case and passing through a thick (50 pages) single-folded copy of the speech titled "Progressive Cause Greater Than Any Individual", which he was carrying in his jacket. Schrank was immediately disarmed (by Czech immigrant Frank Bukovsky) and captured; he might have been lynched had Roosevelt not shouted for Schrank to remain unharmed. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/humansarespaceorcs/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Human females especially. . . As a cis male, I have considered trying one of those period-pain simulators. I haven't because I am a coward. 🙃

unknownpoltroon

Fun alterntive: Larry Nivens Kizin wars (Humanity vs sentient space faring warrior tigers basically) has a note in one of the stories about how gentle the Kizin interrogators have to be with torture because humans tend to die so easily of shock.

TechpriestFawkes

Honestly with humans it's all or nothing. We are so fragile *and* so resilient at the same time.

Robosium

the sharper the knife the less it hurts and magnetic light sound pretty damn sharp

TwinTreesForge

Imagine these aliens reacting to human tattoos

MissDesperado

I once put up with the pain and discomfort of a twisted hip for months, only seeking medical treatment to un-twist my hip once I got too annoyed by wobbling every time I walked uphill or downhill. I hate USA insurance.
