I did not do crossfit, but I did have an abdominal hysterectomy and I am a surfer. I also worked out nearly every day of the week prior to my surgery. I got the all clear at 7 weeks post op to resume my normal life but my surgeon said to really ease into it workouts and listen to my body. I actually didn't really think I was ready so I waited a couple of more weeks but I did start doing some core stretching just to make sure that muscle memory was waking up! Once I started back, I'd do a very short list of exercises or movements in one workout and only do a couple of sets of each. Then, I'd kind of wait a day in between Often when something is too much or we're not quite ready for it, it can hurt later on and not in the moment and that for me was the trickiest part of resuming workouts. So, I just kind of cautiously did my workouts and then gave myself time to see if anything hurt. The one thing I had some issues with was planks (caused cramping later in the evening that lasted for about a day.) I think being really specific and deliberate about what I was doing helped me figure that out right away so I could avoid them for another week or so. I'd say I was back to my normal routine plus surfing within about 3 weeks from the time I started back.

I had laparoscopic and did HIIT, not crossfit. I'm also at 6 weeks next week. I can just tell you what my plan is. My doctor said limit to 25# for a while, and honestly I feel like going from nothing to any more than that is just going to injure my back or a knee anyway. My plan is to work one on one with a trainer and do mostly body weight movements and ridiculously light weights for a while. I'm also going to skip the really "jerky" movements for a while and see how it goes. I feel like in classes there can be a competitiveness that sometimes pushes me to use heavier weights just for the optics, so I'm going to remove myself from that dynamic for a while. If your gym has a beginner class or a class for older/injured people, putting yourself in that one for a bit is probably a good idea. Also if you're good friends with everyone and they know you had surgery, that will probably help keep you out of the competitive mindset.

I’m 7 weeks from LAVH and I’m hoping to get released to workout today at my “6 week appt”. I’ve done CrossFit for over 5 years so I’m excited to get back. However I did read somewhere that is no hops, jumps or abs for at least 12 weeks. I’ll see what my doc says today.

What did your doc say?

He said to ramp up slowly, like at 25% of my norm, and to make sure to listen to my body and if I need to stop, do so. Also no jumping or abs until at least 12 weeks and then ramp that slowly too.
