You'll be fine. Use the stool for comfort if needed. My doc's instructions were: Do not scrub incisions. Let water and soapy water run over them, but don't scrub or put them in direct (hard) stream of the shower. After the shower, pat dry with a clean towel. Let air dry for a few minutes to make sure the incisions are fully dry. My doc recommended keeping a layer of aquaphor on my incisions to promote better scar healing. Also to let the strips fall off in their own.

Thank you!! My anxiety definitely plays a major part in me worrying so I appreciate the support x

No problem! Wash your hair as usual - you should be just fine. I was pleasantly surprised how easy bathibg was. I did have my husband stay in the bathroom with me the first couple of times, just in case but never needed help. I also have a shower stool that I put in the shower but never needed it.

I’m definitely making my boyfriend stay with me as a safety precaution lol I am also very excited to wash my hair!! It’s been 6 days…. I feel terrible

Do you have anyone to help you shower? Do you live with anyone? My surgeon warned about fainting, so if there is someone you trust, let them know you're showering, so that they can hear you, in case you do fall/faint. For my first two showers, I was really cautious. I kept my bathroom door open a little so that those in my house could hear me yell or fall if I were to faint. I have a stepping stool that I used as a shower chair and sat on that when it was time to wash my hair and scrub my legs and feet. My first shower, I just rinsed the abdomen having the steristrips. I did not rub or scrub that area! I spent more time washing my hair, while seated on the stepping stool.

My first couple showers I called my sister on FaceTime and was like will you make sure I’m safe? 😂

fckyeahitssara

Yes I live with my boyfriend! We left the door completely opened on Thursday when I showered and I kneeled in our shower. I do have a plastic stool I could use to sit comfortably though, I think i’ll try that :) thank you

chronicpainprincess

You’ll be fine, babe! Just avoid touching them, they don’t need to be washed. The water running over them is enough. Pat dry gently and make sure nothing stays wet. If there are any tapes or dressings that aren’t waterproof left, make sure to change them so your wound doesn’t stay damp, or pat them dry as best you can if it isn’t long til you have them removed. If you have a partner or fam member you’re comfortable with, let them help you drying your legs so you don’t have to bend.

Thank you 💖 Idk why but you calling me babe made me feel so safe hahaha I’ve been overthinking everything all week but from everyone’s response, I can see it’s just my anxiety scaring me. I’ll definitely ask my boyfriend to keep helping me out x

Do not remove your steri strips until your doctor tells you it’s ok. I think that’s what this person is telling you but that is awful and wrong advice. You can remove the bandages but do NOT remove the strips outside of the instructions from the surgeon.

fckyeahitssara

Yes no worries on that!! Those instructions were clear from my surgeon: let the strips fall off on their own or remove them after a week

MeowGirly

My friend is a nurse. I was worried about taking care of my husband after his shoulder surgery. But I was fine. Only advice she gave me was to snip the ends of the steri strips off as they became loose to avoid them snagging on clothing

CelebrationDue1884

Perfect! Just wanted to make sure. I see a lot of bad advice on this sub and it gets kind of scary. :-(

chronicpainprincess

Yes my bad, I mean TAPE, not strips. I did write tape, I just added the wrong word after it. I appreciate you correcting me but steri strips are waterproof, I wouldn’t advocate removing those.

Brain fog whoops — I was not visualising steri strips when I wrote steri tape, I was thinking of micropore or whatever the name is. Thanks for the correction — I definitely didn’t mean steri strips!

Careless_Block8179

I don’t know what kind of incision you have. I had a LH and small incisions covered with a glue coating. My doctor said to shower and just let the suds run down my stomach, I didn’t need to wash them directly at first.  What are you scared will happen?

fckyeahitssara

I had a laparascopic procedure, 4 very small incisions and at the moment they’re covered with strips. I’m just scared i’ll do something wrong and hinder my healing process

CelebrationDue1884

You will be ok. I was also afraid. I had 2 ports and 1 small incision. I opted to use hibiclens on my abdomen for the first 2 weeks until the strips came off. That just made me feel better about keeping them sterile. And I mostly faced away from the shower so that water wasn’t jetting at them. And I didn’t linger. I did what I needed to do and got out. That worked for me and all was good.

fckyeahitssara

Thank you 🙏🏼 I faced away from the stream the past 2 showers, i’ll definitely keep doing that

Blue_Delphinium77

I had tape on mine that fell off over time so not sure about bandages. But have someone nearby when you do the first and second showers as it took a lot of energy and I was kind of woozy getting out. Didn’t realize how much that first shower would take out of me. But we just had major surgery and the body knows it. Be careful and wishing you the best.

Tasty_Avocado17

I was SO scared to shower. I’m not sure what exactly I was scared of but I waited as long as I could and then I just took a shower and it was okay. Nothing bad happened. Good luck!

amdaly10

I had an abdominal and was told to wash the incision twice a day with soap and water. The easiest way to do that was in the shower so I was taking two showers a day although I didn't wash my hair every time.
