I’d call the jump from second to third gen significant as iPads went from a mobile phone processor to a computer processor. 3rd gen to 4th gen is pretty incremental. Based on your list and needs it sounds like that maybe your best option as well.

I'm rocking an m1 iPad Pro 11". Got it at launch-ish. It's still way more powerful than I'll ever need it to be and the battery life is still insanely good. I don't have any desire to upgrade any time soon.

The newest m2 iPad Pro is not very much different than the m1. I’m still using a 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” still works great for my needs I won’t be upgrading until next year 2024!

I know this is a few months old, but I've used my 3rd gen for Procreate, large games, all of that for years now and it's AMAZING. Speedy, gorgeous display, nice to draw on (with Paperlike) and I too take it everywhere. I've put it in a medium-sized purse or a large backpack. It's went on cruises for reading and drawing. I use it to stream movies from to a TV in an RV while camping. It's so versatile. The camera, however, is VERY lackluster compared to my iPhone's camera, but it will catch a quick snap or video in a pinch. I just bought the 4th gen, but not because of any performance issues, I just needed more space. I only had 64GB (ugh!) and figured I'd go ahead and get the newest one with 512GB. So if you're looking to save money, get the 11" 3rd gen, but get one with a lot more storage space than you think you'll need.

If you want it to last long, get one that has an M series chip inside. It will ensure the iPad's longevity, cause IMO even the M1 is still overkill for the current and latest iPadOS17. So that is the 3rd Gen iPad Pro. Oh, and about the size, I first got a 12.9" cause I thought that a bigger screen is better and also the XDR, but ended up returning it for an 11" maxed cause it is so big- I would rather watch or do something with my setup if I want a bigger screen. Also, yes, the Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) is worth it, especially if you do digital notes or art.

Did you miss the 12.9 after getting the 11” ? I got the 11” for portability, like using in a vehicle while working, taking notes while standing and working, and other traveling. I do like using it outside a lot tho and editing photos. So I’m wondering how noticeable the quality difference between the two really are, as well as brightness for outside. I could return mine for the 12.9” setup but i have a 16” laptop already and wanted the portability. I also like the smaller keyboard for the 11” model. I should just go into the Apple Store and see for myself.

Definitely go to the Apple Store. depends which generation you get. Like I use my 4th gen more then the 5th gen (M1) because I’m not a fan of the blooming effect that the 12.9s have (apparently the 11’ didn’t have mini led which causes it) While I can’t compare to the 11’ if you’re using the iPad in public for the portability, I’d say go with the 11. I’ve used one briefly and it makes the difference if I’m walking/standing. However, taking notes/drawing/media consumption I would say get a 12.9, anything else easily 11’ for its portability, especially when handing to other people.

Yep. Always go and try it physically first, cause we all got different preferences. Some might have the same situation but maybe the other one can compromise on portability, and the other one might want a very portable pc-like device.

Sorry for the late reply, but yeah, sometimes I do when I am sketching and drawing something. But I always think of the pros and cons, and the Pro 11" is always much more suitable for me. When I do want a bigger screen, I just use my setup.
