Interesting. I always associate pistachio with Italians.

stinkyhooch

Ohhhh!!! šŸ¤Œ

SpideyWhiplash

Not on subject. But, Orange Pineapple sounds delicious. Now I need to find this...soon. It's Ice Cream after all!šŸØ

xnekocroutonx

Same, orange pineapple sounds like something Iā€™d definitely love!

SpideyWhiplash

I'm currently looking in the West Tampa Bay Area. Not finding anything šŸ˜•

ReggieAmelia

Might find Dole Whip at Menchies every now and then, and they do make orange pineapple flavor. Whether that specific flavor is sold outside Disney, not sure but I know as of my last visit a few years ago, it was available as a swirl at Pineapple Lanai

SpideyWhiplash

Never heard of Menchies. Will definitely look into their selection of yummies. Thanks!

FancyErection

I own an ice cream business, itā€™s not just Latino folks with differing tastes! Iā€™ve noticed over the years the preferences of many demographics! For instance, Indians gravitate to Mango, Rose, Honey and Pistachio, while white women go for salted caramel, coconut and coffee

KickBallFever

Maybe Iā€™m secretly Indian because those are the flavors I gravitate towards. Iā€™m from a tropical climate, so maybe thatā€™s why.

FancyErection

There, of course, are exceptions

tehbigsmelly

Depending on which part of India they're from, it would make sense with desserts like gulab jamun (rose) and rasmalai (many flavors, including rose, mango, cardamom, pistachio). I wonder if a cashew-flavored one would do decently; I like kaju pista occasionally. Y'know, I wish Three Twins was still around. I liked their cardamom ice cream.

SpankAPlankton

What about senior citizens? My grandma likes butter pecan, butter brickle, and Ozark black walnut. Do your older customers gravitate towards flavors like that?

FancyErection

Maple nut, and anything with pralines and/or booze as well as what you mentioned

AbsoluteBossman

Yes! Butter Pecan is definitely one, Grapenut and Frozen pudding are other famous ones for the older customers. Maple walnut is another one that comes to mind, sometimes chocolate walnut fudge

SpankAPlankton

Iā€™ve never heard of frozen pudding ice cream. I looked it up, and it sounds good!

kave1790

Latino ice cream fiend here, I was raised in El Salvador, rum raisin and pistachio are the go to flavors there now and when I was growing up. Add to it bubble gum but that's not something that's common here in the US, which is weird cause it's delicious .

stinkyhooch

I remember eating lots of bubblegum ice cream in the states as a kid, but havenā€™t seen it since. Screwballs were the bomb.

09percent

Haha I donā€™t know why but you are right on the pistachio one at least in my experience. Iā€™m Mexican and Iā€™m not aware of any pistachio desserts or dishes my family ate but I have tons of memories of various family members enjoying pistachio ice cream. I think itā€™s just a good flavor but I also made your observation when I was younger but there never seemed to be an actual reason behind it.

not_impressive

Yeah lol I laughed when I read the thing about pistachio because my dad is Puerto Rican and he loves pistachio.Ā

ReggieAmelia

Who makes orange pineapple besides Dole Whip? If your assertion holds true on any kind of general level, it's probably because many Hispanics are coming from the Caribbean, especially in Florida where you might find the orange pineapple Dole Whip flavor. Rum raisin is a very popular flavor in the Caribbean because many of those countries make rum since they have a history of growing sugarcane. They are also tropical climates so they often grow pineapples and citrus fruits very easily and therefore many people eat them from the time they are children. Furthermore, most of these countries are intimately linked to European countries either by cultural history or by political affiliation, and one of Europe's favorite ice cream flavors is pistachio. The nuts were introduced to Europe as an exotic flavor from Syria and other regions along the silk road and became very popular. The pistachio ice cream at Berthillon in France, imo, is the best in the world, but I haven't been to the middle east and they too make killer pistachio ice cream, having had some middle eastern ice cream in Los Angeles. It's possible somewhere out there can beat France's pistachio game. Source: I am Caribbean-Hispanic and eat ice cream all over the planet. Bonus: The Rum Raisin at Armstrong's ice cream on St. Croix is the best I've had.

AbsoluteBossman

So the place I work at has an Orange Pineapple flavor (orange base with pineapple bits in it), but we also serve Dole Whip in a soft serve machine as well. It's actually really cool, we buy the powder mixture straight from Dole and mix it together ourselves and serve it! We always have pineapple dole but we tend to rotate the other flavor. Right now it is Raspberry Dole, but we've had mango, strawberry, and pomegranate dole whip as well.

ReggieAmelia

Yeah I knew I had seen a machine out in the world that had multiple Dole Whip flavors besides Menchies but it was probably 8+ years ago so I thought maybe Disney had largely subsumed their business outside the parks by now. Are you in FL? Because I know I was there when I saw that machine.

AbsoluteBossman

We are not in Florida, I don't believe Disney actually owns the Dole Whip trademark so I presume Dole sells it on their own. We use ours from a machine that actually used to serve the typical vanilla and chocolate soft serve, but after we got a new machine we didn't want to get rid of the old one so we transformed it into a Dole one. Definitely a great move and has really helped business!

ReggieAmelia

Yeah that stuff is legit. I knew Disney didn't own it, but it's so intimately associated with the parks that I assumed they might have thrown some big money at it to buy a degree of exclusivity. I certainly don't see those machines *enough* out there that it makes me wonder to what extent Disney has locked down some hegemony over it. But yeah, orange and pineapple next to each other = orange pineapple swirl. Good stuff. One time, I took an orange pineapple swirl over from Pineapple Lanai to Trader Sam's next door and poured a tiki drink into the cup to make a tasty spiked float. Excellent. I don't drink, so my wife enjoyed it, but I took a couple sips and it was great.

HarvardCricket

Great info!!

KickBallFever

Omgā€¦shout out to Armstrongā€™s ice cream! Iā€™m from STX and thatā€™s our little local spot. Iā€™m going down there this summer and will have to try their rum raisin. Do you know if they make it with Cruzan rum?

ReggieAmelia

I think they do, but if they don't they absolutely should.

General-Heart4787

YES! To the rum raisin at Armstrongā€™s! So rich and decadent- and made me a bit tipsy, too! (Though honestly, I was pretty much tipsy the whole time I was in St. Croix, lol.

Damnshesfunny

I think Dole whips are WDW exclusive unfortunately.šŸ™ƒ

ReggieAmelia

I think the Menchies in Florida carry it too. Maybe outside of Florida as well, not sure. I think it's an occasional option that they rotate in.

Damnshesfunny

Wow thanx!

Bosston2YYZ

Lifelong Latina here. Iā€™ve never had rum raisin in my life šŸ˜ƒ

razz-p-berrie

recent Latina here! rum raisin sounds foul

Historical-Bat-3251

I'm Latina and the only one I would like are orange pineappleā€” but I also like mango

Zestyclose-Durian-24

This is cracking me up because Latinos are not a monolith (like Chile is way different from El Salvador or the DR). That said, I am Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, and I love dates, pistachios, and rose anything, so I know what you mean.

HarvardCricket

Not sure if thereā€™s any connection here, but my family is Indian, but Anglo-Indian of Portuguese descent. A lot of the desserts they eat are things I think youā€™d get in more European or Latin cultures - like custards, fruit cakes/Christmas cakes, bread puddings, trifles. A lot of focus on nuts too, and sometimes on fruit and raisins. My family lives in FL now and thereā€™s heavy emphasis on Latin American desserts too, and you can see some crossover, even from this side of the world (Iā€™m guessing the Spanish influence going back). We have a lot of good Latin and Cuban grocery stores. Anyway, since the desserts are not really heavy on cakes/chocolate/cookies/peanut butter/etc., much like American desserts are, I wonder if the ice cream flavors are patterned after/reflect some of the desserts? The choices you listed are 100% flavors my dad liked. His favorite was pistachio almond from Baskin Robbins! (And he didnā€™t like any ice cream or dessert if it didnā€™t have nuts!)

voteblue18

Well rum is big in Puerto Rico (and the Caribbean in general) so maybe that has something to do with it? Orange pineapple sounds kind of tropical as well. No idea on the pistachio.

CellNo7422

My husbands from Jamaica and recently visiting his cousin, also from there, I was introduced to grape nut ice cream. Which they both swear by, and is incredibly odd and not my thing at all. Funniest part is his cousin randomly ended up in Maine, thatā€™s where we were visiting. And itā€™s this big thing there too (says cuz wife whoā€™s from Maine) So they had it in Jamaica and in Maine! But Iā€™d never heard of it? Is anyone from either place who knows about it? Or from anywhere else. I was surprised hahahah

IceCreamVariety

I am always on this sub and joined reddit because on it! This is my first comment. I grew up in Maine and can confirm that grape nut ice cream is definitely a thing and is delicious, but I have no idea why it is such a thing. All my family is from Mass and we always grew up with something called grape nut pudding at every holiday for dessert as well.

NintendoLove

Grape Nut as in the cereal?

CellNo7422

Yess.and itā€™s like. Why? Why not cinnamon toast crunch or Reeseā€™s cereal. You know? But yes itā€™s grape nuts cereal and it gets this kind of chewy texture thing with the little granules and the cream. So ppl who like it think itā€™s the this great choice for a cereal add in. But it too weird for me.

CellNo7422

Can I ask is the pudding like vanilla with grape nuts mixed in?

CellNo7422

And ahhaha honored to be part of your first comment. Thanks for sharing. I was surprised there was this shared grape nuts ice cream thing from two such distinct farflung cultures but they said they grow up having it in Jamaica too and yeah itā€™s a Maine thing. From Hudson valley suburbs, love Carvel, donā€™t know grape nuts.

nightwolves

Yess!!! Iā€™m a Mainer and when I visit my parents I always get some Grape Nuts ice cream!

ReasonedBeing

My Walmart has a brand of ice cream called Helados Mexico, and the flavors are strawberry, mango, coconut, and rompope (egg nog).

bensassesass

Helados Mexico are excellent! I've also on occasion seen a great value mango habanero coconut ice cream that really blew me away for walmart brand

ReasonedBeing

Oh wow, I have seen Great Value mango, but not with habanero and coconut! I just bought a watermelon jalapeno sorbet from a local ice cream maker, I am digging the spicy, icy flavor!

S4ntos19

I love Rum Raisin because my adoptive parents introduced it to me. Pistachio is horrible, and citrus should really only be reserved for sherbert. My favorite flavors are Black Raspberry and Cotton Candy. (I am Mayan, just for reference).

nightwolves

I spent some months in Honduras and rum raisin ice cream was very popular and easy to find

Southern_Second521

i am latino and those sound gross to me except orange pineapple which iā€™m sure most people would probably like. as a latino also never in my life have i heard someone say i would love a rum raisin ice cream. pistachio iā€™ve heard but my white fiancĆ© also likes pistachio so anyways dont make assumptions. except that we like horchata flavoredā€¦. that may be true

EverJoyed

I always noticed Hispanic people choosing strawberry over other flavors
