Until you have a modron cores with a good good boost it can be helpful to have a few to open up when you have zero favor at the beginning of an event or time gate to get a little gold boost. Though I have a few thousand just sitting around cause I'm just too lazy to open them often enough to keep the number down.
Just to be clear, you won't get gear for freely from normal silver chests. just from freely silver chests. The normal silver/gold chests just give gear for the starting champions and those unlocked by playing campaigns and hitch. Though electrum chests will give gear up to blue for event champions.
Oh sorry, I meant because freely is part of the next event I will need the extra event tokens for farming silver freely chests. Tokens I would get from the contracts in the chests I already have. Thank you.
I usually open silver chests at the end of a deep run to get some bonus to favor earned. When you open 4k of them, the amount of gold they drop is quite significant. They are also a stable source of shinies for evergreen champions.
they don't give any favour at the end of a run if you have been doing runs "properly", as in azaka, etc.
eg.. if you've been using krull, for example, a run might end with say e100 gold and opening silvers will give maybe e80, e90.. ie. makes no difference.
best used at the beginning of a new gate/event/campaign/trial (ie 0 favour starts), unless of course none of that gold spiking stuff apply to the champs you have, in which case end of runs could work. a bit.
I don't do it "properly" yet due to self-imposed restrictions, specifically no CDB, no Orkira stacking, and no Jimothy (and no Azaka farming by extension). I dabbled into CDB today. For ten areas. In A Tale of Two Champions (Zariel).
Favor runs are done with standard Asharra team, by nuking enemies with Penelope and Blooshi.
well bosses have a low percent chance of dropping chests, once you unlock your first modron core you can set it to auto restart a mission after beating a target level. Since cores level based on areas cleared I set mine to go to 100 and restart with 1 clicker leveling the click damage 1 leveling a champ and 1 doing the attacking. it runs all the time and in roughly the last month I've made about 800 chests and 150k in gems.

Okay, then I think my best plan is to open them up when the next event starts because I also need to gear out freely after I get them.

You won't get any event tokens from silver chests, you need to buy gold chests. Silvers will only give you potions and ilevels

If you are doing favor runs without an azaka farm at the end, you are not doing a favor run. So agreed, you are not doing it properly.

I tend to open mine at the start of events of timegates just to get that intial boost
