How is Tennis Missing? ...Can't be less than boxing or Badminton !!!

Ayaan_Goswami

I think the football numbers are not for Indian football but for EPL and UEFA. No way that's for ISL matches. Jio doesn't even show the viewership count for those matches. And I think Badminton is really good. That is good viewership for a sport that is not that well marketed. I watch most of the Masters on JioCinema, and the quality is amazing.

Shriman_Ripley

Football numbers are for FIFA WC. Even then I am doubtful if so many people have paid channel subscription for football.

LogicalTranquility

Surprised at the popularity of volleyball

Acrobatic-Profile365

I wonder how much of this is supply vs demand driven. For instance, I am sure that Kabaddi's high numbers are mainly because the kabaddi pro league is telecast at prime time. I am sure athletics or badminton would be much higher if it was afforded the same. The numbers still look very suspect though. How are the % calculated? What is the base?

Samrao94

Wwe is not a sport, its more like reality tv

BlueLabel19

Reality?

falcon0041

How is 612 90 percent ?

sliceshot_

Common audiences. Of course those who watch cricket also watch other sports, badminton fans also watch WWE

falcon0041

Ahh that makes sense

TerrificTauras

Football would have completely surpassed cricket in popularity if we were actually good at playing it.

sliceshot_

Isn't it true for all sports not just football.

TerrificTauras

Not all sports have equal commercial value. India is within the top 5 nations of hockey in world rankings. Yet a hockey league in the style of IPL failed. Football is already watched here enthusiastically. Now imagine if India was actually good at playing football. It would leave cricket behind easily.

malnad_gowda

How are these percentages calculated?

Outside-Bear3289

Esports when?

Cute-Water9537

I'll prolly get down voted but empires should not be considered a sport , it requires nearly no physical activity and completely eliminates the reason people watch sports : watching people push their body to the extremes and competing to see who us stronger , faster , has more stamina and better reflex . E sports can claim only one of those , reflexes .

r1234ev

Then you can't consider golf a sport too, or snooker or chess too. I think a sport is any game wherein you're using your body for proficiency and your actions directly co-relate to the skill level. But I agree you're not an athlete if you play esports. So basically it is a sport but eSports players aren't athletes if that makes sense

Cute-Water9537

I don't. Chess is a game not a sport , same with snooker . Golf is debatable . Most pro golfers drive at 300 kph , you need core strength and gym work for that . So yes I agree with you , gamers , chess players etc are incredibly skilled individuals but not athletes , same with Olympic dressage , making your horse dance takes skills but if you can do it at 60 , you aren't an athlete

InternalOk3135

Kabaddi is really that popular? I’ve seen it played probably once in a local park, that too in a tier 2 city. I’m guessing it’s one of those sports that is more popular in rural than urban centres.

MuscleEarly1237

I have seen more people watching pkl than isl

TerrificTauras

Pro-Kabaddi is the 2nd most popular league in india after IPL.

AverageBrownGuy01

I guessed more for Kabaddi. Also, it'll be a good idea to remember that 60% of our population lives in rural settings. Kabaddi is immensely popular. Pro-Kabaddi made it popular in urban areas as well.

AntiLoge

WWE can't really be called a sport

Chunnilal03

Hamare india me uncle log ko pata nahi ki wwe storyline scripted hota hai

livelifereal

Not just uncle log, there are kids in YouTube comment section swearing it's real

Downtown_Commission4

Basketball needs to be promoted more in India.

karenproletaren

Agree. But we in the Indian basketball world are already running into the same problems as Indian football. Complete lack of responsible leadership from the governing body BFI.

jokfgj

Very true, only option for Indian players wishing to make basketball a career is to go overseas. That is a real shame imo, india should capitalise on this opportunity and make a Indian league where players from other countries and Indians can play. But this will never happen cause all the officials are only interested in filling their pockets.

PuzzleheadedMode7517

Surprisingly football has such a decent amount of viewers We're slowly running out of the excuse of 'cricket is the popular sport'

desperate_singh

Football always had a decent viewership in India but not for Indian clubs or national team.

AverageBrownGuy01

I doubt 300mil is the number for Indian football. There are millions, who don't follow national, but only club football. They're more passionate about a British Football club :P (which is understandable given our performance)

Shriman_Ripley

I think most of that number would be from world cup. I have seen so many people who don’t follow football at all making plans to watch world cup knockout games. Number of people following European clubs is big but not that big. And number of people following Indian national team is almost non existent.

Cute-Water9537

I'm bengali so I have always been an avid footballer and football watcher , I love my east bengal, but our players play like they are high on Crack, it's just way easier to watch , for example vini Jr run at express pace down the flank , or a harry kane scoring from his own half , or a Halland having godly positional awareness than watching nishoo kumar run with the ball despite having four open men , not passing and then losing possession in his own half , then challenging in a manner that makes Harry maguire look like the bastard son of maldi and Beckenbauer. And conceding a goal despite having 3 other players in the box . Though watching chelsea play does make it easier for me to watch east bengal

NavdeepGusain

Hockey and Badminton deserves more viewership.

[deleted]

Kabaddi needs participation from more countries and maybe a 2nd tier of pkl to include more states

Salty-Apricot9853

bro there are more nations playing kabbadi than 90% of the sports. kabbadi has nations from all over the world and they are not some indian living in those nations but proper native teams

waveradium

Kabaddi has real potential to be a world-class sport.

TerrificTauras

Both kho-Kho and Kabaddi deserve to be an Olympic sport.
