Quick question out of curiosity and abundant ignorance. To program this, is it just a math problem they solve for and input or is there a lot of takes to get it right by trial and error on the details ?
The machine needs to know EXACTLY at what angle the rotating bits are, meaning it has to be extremely percise and have a high detection rate. And both motors need to be in perfect sync. Everything else is as simple as giving machine the commands to move wherever you want. As for how they slot into each other while rotating, i assume they gave one rotor angle offset relative to the other. I am more impressed by the machines ability to keep up, than math.
I don't work with these machines (not yet at least, in the future who knows), but I am a programmer.
I believe they give instructions to each machine how they should move and those instructions are thoroughly thought out and calculated before hand, so it should work on the first try.
