I hope that cat lives a semi-charmed life. Poor thing.

Trasfixion

You just know that cats 3rd eye is blind. So sad

UnknownJpk

Great music tho. Successful cat.

Pleasant-Impress9387

How’s it gonna be?

AKfromVA

Interesting-Kiwi-109

When I don’t know you

CrepusculrPulchrtude

Not so fun fact: that song is about a meth addiction. Check the lyrics! It's so catchy you don't even notice

mriners

Especially since most radio stations I’ve heard play it bleep out “crystal meth.”

CrepusculrPulchrtude

I only found out when a friend did it at karaoke and when the explicit mention of meth came up he shouted "THAT'S RIGHT, THIS IS A SONG ABOUT METH!" at us while we sat there processing it

AlaDouche

I mean, it's more a song about quitting meth...

puppyamore

And then I bumped again and I bumped again

itscoconutsnail

I once heard an acoustic cover of that song played in a target commercial promoting their baby registry stuff 💀

MISTERPEACEMAKER

Wait, does that mean you hope the cat has a meth addiction?

RapaxMaxima

I dunno why but I was expecting that third eyeball to be in her forehead.

EscoOz

Ha! I expected them to brush aside some fur there to expose it!

[deleted]

I know, it's like "hidden 3rd eye" mf that shits out for the world to see, ain't hidden

[deleted]

Because the pineal gland is in your forehead & in some species does have, often incomplete, lenses, corneas & retina. It’s called the third eye.

I_Neo_

I hope its not painful….because that looks painful

TheSweetestEef

A kitten with a similar defect was posted go reddit not too long ago. [This article](https://www.newsweek.com/cat-kitten-three-eyes-post-photo-reddit-janus-1690060) said corrective surgery (for both the eye and a cleft palate) was too expensive and they opted to put it to sleep due to potential quality of life issues.

MahaHaro

That's depressing as fuck

Alexchii

Yeah, but perfectly fine cats get put down all the time. Putting down one that suffers and adopting one that would otherwise die is a net positive, I think.

BreeFree71

I think this line of thought would be the only way to stay sane as a vet.

leisuremann

I don't agree. I used to think euthanasia was a necessary evil and would eat their souls until I had a dog - my favorite organism ever, animal or human - who had been with me for 14 years. She was my partner in crime. Came to work with me every day. She had bladder cancer and we kept her alive and comfortable for as long as possible. One day, about a year ago, she woke up and couldn't really walk or stand and in was in significant and obvious pain. We gave it 24 hours to see if anything would improve but she was just done. She wouldn't even stand up to urinate because of the pain. At that point, the decision to euthanize was easy. That vet performed a kindness, a mercy that I will forever be grateful for. Of course I had never been sadder in my life than when she passed but I was also relieved to know that her suffering was over. I think their sanity lies in the knowledge that euthanasia, in these kinds of cases is truly a gift. Having said that, the vets that have to euthanize because of overcrowded animal shelters - that's got to be tough.

WhichSpirit

I think it's a bit of both. The vet I used to work for would be totally chill for euthanasia for some animals but pissed off for others (mostly when the family had let a pet decline to the point where euthanasia was the only option while not getting sufficient treatment). Before I started working there, a family came in to get their rabbit put down because it had maggots. My boss was like "No, fuck you. I can fix this." and stole their rabbit. Oreo went on to have a long and happy life in the hospital.

pm-me-asparagus

I hope Orea was a double stuff rabbit.

WhichSpirit

She was. She was very fluffy. When I cleaned her home it was 1/3 bedding she had thrown everywhere, 1/3 poop, and 1/3 fluff.

[deleted]

Me who has never owned a rabbit: WTF Hubs who has: No that's totally normal

Mrischief

Rabbits are the original stuffed animals, there are idioms about it! 😂

monkeying_around369

Two separate clinics I worked at had resident cats because their owner wanted to put them down because they kept peeing in the house. The vets obviously refused and we kept the cats. Both never peed anywhere in the clinic. Loved having them around though. Was great for office morale.

yrnkween

Sounds like those cats had a plan to upgrade their lives.

monkeying_around369

Their owners clearly sucked! They were the nicest sweetest little voids. They had the run of the clinic and their own spots. We called it their retirement lol.

silverwolf761

I worked at a vet clinic in University, and there was only one time I saw one the vets get angry. I forget the *exact* details, but a man brought in his dog that either needed surgery or medication that would have been about $700, which was too expensive so the owner opted for euthanasia. Once it was over the man asked how much taxidermy would cost

WhichSpirit

My boss would have literally murdered him.

secretactorian

My dad would have just eaten the cost and said cool, I'll save him and he's no longer your responsibility

Mr_Diesel13

My veterinarian did the same for a full size poodle that was 2 years old. Family brought it in because they were moving across the country and just couldn’t figure out how take their dog with them. He took the dog into the back, handed them a bill, they paid and left. It had a new home by the end of the day.

texasrigger

>because it had maggots Flystrike? That can be pretty gnarly but frequently totally treatable.

WhichSpirit

I think so but it's been years since I worked there so I'm not 100% sure.

Commercial-Rush755

I worked at an animal shelter and euthanasia was part of the job. I’ve never drank so much to cope in my life. I hated that job, I hated people so much who just dumped their animals or let them breed over and over and then dumped the offspring on us bc “someone would adopt them” wrong! It was a high kill shelter, we put down up to 100 animals a day. I still have PTSD from that awful job.

Asuyu

I saw a post from a veterinarian here on reddit and the thing that really got them during euthanasia was when the owner left. They fucking left. And it wasn’t one owner it was many owners. That killed me.

holy-reddit-batman

I knew a woman who left the hospital minutes before her husband died "because she just couldn't be there." He was her best friend and they had been married about 62 years. I couldn't believe it. The man was unconscious and heavily medicated since they knew it was coming, so he wouldn't have known if she had stayed. Still. I can't imagine not being there in case one of those deathbed miracles occurred like he became conscious for a moment to say goodbye...or just in general! Everyone processes differently though.

Too_Bad_Peanutbutter

I could never ever leave my pets at the vet to be euthanized. I understand it's fucking hard to stay with them when they pass, but it's just as fucking hard for the animal to be alone with people they don't know. And at the last moments of their lives. It breaks my heart just to think about it. Some vets where I live don't even allow the owners to be with their pets when they get euthanized, which pisses me off as well.

xJIllIIllk

> "No, fuck you. I can fix this." and stole their rabbit. Oreo went on to have a long and happy life in the hospital. I think a big problem is that people do not adopt with the mindset of paying *a lot* of money for the vet. Not an easy decision to make..

Kyro0098

A lot of my friends in college always asked why I didn't adopt an animal when I loved them so much. I could not afford more than food, water, and prevention treatment if I took a few extra shifts. That is not enough for a pet. I need to afford their insurance or their vet bills outright. I found two tiny kittens during the time I was there. I kept one for 4 days until a slot opened up. She was the cutest and so friendly, but she was covered in fleas. Did 3 baths while she was with me. Two with dawn dish soap and one with proper flea bath. She ended up getting adopted almost as soon as she was back to a healthy weight which was really good to see. She was malnourished when I found her, but she had just enough strength to come out and try to say hi. The second kitten was a lot better off, but it took almost a week to find a place with room. Hour and a half drive for her. Both were super sweet, but it just wasn't meant to be. No matter what my friends said. I couldn't bear it if I got attached and couldn't afford treatment.

labretirementhome

From what I understand from vets the first time you have to euthanize a dog it's common to wait until it's incredibly obvious the dog is suffering. Every succeeding dog after that owners tend to make the decision much more quickly once the signs point that direction. It's basically a shift in empathy.

leisuremann

I made the decision on time and that will actually be my guide when I have to do it again. I 100% believe that I didn't wait too long. That dog had a great 14 years right up until the day before she died. If her quality of life had deteriorated sooner, we would have euthanized sooner.

true_gunman

It may sound morbid but I wish we could do this for people. I for one don't want to suffer for years as my family watches me deteriorate. My grandma is currently stuck in a nursing home and it's obvious how absolutely depressed she is and her quality of life is very low despite living in a good facility. It's just so sad and I feel if it were up to her, she would like to just go out peacefully with her family around to say goodbye but she doesn't get that option.

tiredofmyownself

It’s called dying with dignity, and I truly hope it gains more traction in the coming decades. It’s crazy to me that we do not allow people to make those decisions for themselves. It is currently a legal practice in some places but there’s still a lot of red tape. You have to prove you’re dying basically already and there’s no cure.

bashno

It is morbid, but it is also very true. I watched my mom die a very slow and painful death over 17 years. She was obviously done very much earlier, and as hard and weird as it is to say, it would have been much better for her if she went a lot of years sooner.

rabidjellyfish

I 100% agree. Animals get the short end of the stick a lot of the time. But when it comes to euthanasia they're the lucky ones. I euthanized my kitty cat last April. I can't imagine just giving him some pain meds and waiting for him to die by himself as his kidneys failed. I'm sorry about your grandma. I hope she finds a peaceful end.

Helmett-13

You don't want to be cruel and you don't want to be selfish. Finding that balance is sheer torture. It's the worst part of having a pet but they rely on us.

jointheredditarmy

Yet we keep humans who don’t even recognize their own face in the mirror alive. We can keep brain dead humans alive for years. We force elderly humans in constant pain alive. If I’m in a position like that please kill me

leisuremann

Couldn't agree more. In the same way I don't think the state has a right to take a life, I also don't think the state has a right to preserve a, let's call it a non viable life. The sooner we get away from "judeo christian" paradigms the better off we'll be as a species.

BolotaJT

My boy passed at 14yo too. He was very sick (cancer) and he was feeling so much pain that no medication was helping at home. (I wanted give whatever he needs to pass at peace in home with no pain, but the drugs the vet prescribed wasn’t working anymore). So I made the hard decision. And let me tell you, when the process started and he gave the first sedation, I saw my boy have the first relief in weeks. He slept so peacefully. That’s when Ik it was the right thing. I stayed there during the whole process telling he that I loved him so much and he could Rest In Peace. Still miss my good boy every day. He was with me from childhood till my adulthood. Love you, Spike.

RelevantMetaUsername

I volunteered as a dog walker at a shelter for a few years. Occasionally I’d see one of the vets step outside the “kill room”, light up a cigarette and break down into tears. Sometimes the kennel staff were tasked with loading the truck that took the dead animals away. It’s was especially hard on them since that wasn’t a normal part of their job duties.

DashLeJoker

It's why vets have one of the highest suicide rate of any career

Squat-Walker

It's a big reason yes. But there are far worse things in this field. Performing a euthanasia (or assisting in my case) then immediately going to take a call where the client screams at you for not getting their dog in to be seen sooner then proceeds to tell you that you are only in it for the money and don't really love animals, as you are trying to compose yourself from the euth you were just a part of, is a much bigger reason. Seeing animals suffer in pain and recommending euthanasia but they refuse and there is nothing you can do and have to sit and watch this dog die in terrible pain. I always thought euthanasia would be my potential downfall from the field. But it's the clients and the endless suffering. That's where you lose sleep at night.

[deleted]

Yeah I mean I'm sure it's not fun but vets aren't killing themselves solely because they had to put some pets to sleep. Veterinary school is expensive as fuck and super competitive. Then you graduate, as a doctor, and go work at the Banfield in the back of a PetSmart for 60k a year while some ignorant cunt screams at you for telling them that their parakeet is fat.

SUDDENLY_VIRGIN

:(

Borkvar

I used to volunteer with a vet, and you're more right than you think. I heard him once tell someone who asked him how he could stand to put down dogs just because of aggression something along the lines of: "Why would anyone choose to save dangerous, bad dogs when there are so many good, loving dogs out there to save instead?" Maybe it's a hot take, particularly to those who rescue fighting dogs, but I would like them have to personally put down the wonderful sweet boi who spent one day too long in the pound just to make room for the dog who keeps busting through fences to kill cats.

RenuisanceMan

On an entirety separate note, vets have one the highest suicide rates among professions.

Alpacamum

That’s partly because they have access to the meds to suicide. Most people don’t and don’t want a painful death, and therefore usually find there way to mental health treatment after a while or the immediate wish to die (crisis moment ends). However the US also has a high suicide rate from guns, it’s seen as another painless death (except for those who survive).

Tangled2

I think the top four are Doctors, Dentists, Cops, and then Vets. Pharmacists are up there, too. So your theory may be right.

gregsting

And in the meantime people suffering like crazy with no chance to recover are kept alive

Alexchii

My mother is a nurse. I hear stories. Many people would be better of dead and would actually probably prefer it that way. If you're really old and sick, living and dying at home after a few weeks or months would be much better than being kept alive at a hospital for longer.

Cocoa186

Should be noted that this kitten might be alright though, I'm no expert but it's almost definitely the cleft pallete that resulted in the euthanasia of the other kitten. I have a friend who does a lot of fostering and cleft pallete is basically invariably fatal for kittens, it requires quick and expensive surgery.

[deleted]

[deleted]

The article said that the procedure would have been around $10,000 and the owner would have had to take extended time off from work to shove a tube down its throat every 2 hours since it could not feed. Many people can’t ball out $10,000 AND take extended time off work

Isadragon9

Add on any potential complications following the surgery that might require additional treatment and/or hospitalisation…. My dumbass rabbit chewed his neutering stitches and needed a second emergency surgery as well as 2 night hospitalisation… a $300-400 procedure turned into $1k 🥲

Zapiel_

I've spent $3-4k on my dog trying to get his seizures under control. After two years, we've finally found the right med mix and he's been seizure free for 6 months. It's crazy to spend that but pets are family.

chrisagiddings

Savage. But same.

vergina_luntz

I adopted a 3 yo dog whose owners could no longer keep her due to housing. (I asked to pet her one day after losing my other dog and she was SO sweet I offhandedly said if you ever need to give her up let me know! A couple weeks later, they flagged me down and I had a new dog). Anyway, I asked what her name was when I first met her, and they told me "Misty", because of her eyes...I didn't even know what entropian was, but the first thing I did, that week, was bring her to a vet and ask if they could help her. Surgery that week and in another week she must 'smiled' for the first time. They were not bad people they just could not afford the surgery. But man my poor Misty living like that for 3 years:(

FreshYardPimp

Did the same for my cat spent $3000 just to save the fucker and he’s still here and loving life, I don’t regret any of it!

anniecet

Same. I had 2 cats with an extra set of inward growing eyelashes. They actually leaked bloody tears until we were able to afford the surgery when they were 2 yrs old. Actually… we couldn’t afford the surgery. I rehomed them to people who could.

Working_Travel9561

Is the third eye functional though? Does it share a retina?

Lust4Me

The brain will learn to ignore an eye that doesn't contribute to vision. For example, [loss of binocular vision](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4174748/) in strabismus. I would expect something similar here.

Working_Travel9561

I clicked the link - but it's clearly written in some archaic language because I understood nothing - thank you though, it makes sense (like the fact that your eyes always sees your nose but your brain deletes it)

wildcard1992

I realised halfway through my undergrad in biochemistry that I was just learning a new language I speak biology now

ftrade44456

And that's what is interesting about any field of study. It is another language. It has its own abbreviations, its own numbers that have specific meanings, and words that mean absolutely nothing to other people who don't know that language. Things like medicine, law, psychology, economics, finance. They all have their own language that require interpreters so that others can understand what is being conveyed by that language.

Wilfredbrimly1

Can confirm lost 90% sight in one eye (thank you ms) looks like crap if I close good eye but with both open my brain ignores what the bad eye sees

project100

What did Microsoft do to your eye?

Lust4Me

The brain is an amazing thing. Here's a more general story of how you can adapt to changes in sight: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2012/nov/12/improbable-research-seeing-upside-down

[deleted]

You only see color at the very center of your vision, but your brain fills in color everywhere else based on what it either remembers or expects the color to be. It also "backfills" the state of objects in time when you rapidly change views. If you suddenly look at a clock and focus on the seconds hand, the first tick will always seem like it takes longer than the following ones, because your brain didn't originally know that it was moving. It saw a stationary clock hand and assumed that it was always stationary, and so that's what you see until the hand moves a second time.

Yeah! I knew about people, but didn't know that also applied to animals! (I thought it had a different term when referring to animals, but interesting that it applies to everything) You say "in the past", do they not still do that (and assign a sex to them)? Or do they now only correct any urinary tract deformities and leave the genitals alone until the child is old enough to decide what they want for themselves?

Defiant_apricot

Unfortunately doctors will still sometimes fuck with the babies genitals, sometimes without the parents consent. It still happens and it’s fucked up.

BrZepp

Veterinaries of Reddit, how is this possible?

Sad_Anything8145

Random mutations happen all the time. Most of them get corrected or the cell gets eliminated before it multiplies. Of the ones that get to stay, most of them are irrelevant, in a non-coding part of the DNA. But very few actually get through and cause an interesting change like this. Other examples of such mutations are polydactyly, albinism, heterochromia and so on

TerribleIdea27

It doesn't even have to be a mutation! Congenital defects are very often not a genetic mutation, but just a biological process that went awry during (early) development. Sometimes proteins are fully functional and in their normal shape but transcribed at a moment when they should not be and that can also cause multiplications of limbs, digits or organs.

squilliam777

In our local museum there's actually a cow that was born with three heads and lived for a pretty decent while. Back in the early 1900s. They have it on display with a full writeup from a then veterinarian

KapteeniJ

A proto-Brahmin.

BrZepp

Ok, mutation. I should know that from biology class lol

Sad_Anything8145

But extremely rarely, some mutations actually confer an advantage to the individual, giving it a better chance of reproducing and passing down that mutation to its offsprings. An example is how albino bears thrived in polar regions because of their natural camouflage, thus eliminating their non-albino competitors in those areas

Dinlek

Are you sure polar bears share a common ancestor with albinism? They have black skin and pigmented eyes, which means their color derives from some other process, or they spontaneously recovered the ability to produce pigmented tissue, afaik.

Sad_Anything8145

Like the evolution of every other species, that of polar bears wasn’t a single event. But that is how it started and what gave them a head start

BrZepp

Interesting, I didn't know that

Sad_Anything8145

The entire evolution is a long chain of random but beneficial mutations

Federal_Ninja_2847

is this lil guy gonna have to be put down because of the eye? do u think its in pain?

avboden

Veterinarian here (legitimately) Weird congenital malformations/mutations can happen just about anywhere in the body. The main problem with this though is there's not usually just one, I would bet good money this cat has some other internal issues. The cat needs a CT scan of the head to make sure there's not any dramatic issues with the skull, plus likely imaging of the rest of the body to see if there's any life-limiting issues. If all that checks out i'd then remove both eyes on that side to eliminate the inevitable issues because obviously there's not really room there for those long-term.
