I might just have the IQ points for the "shake the carriage with your own weight" job. any open positions anywhere?

NurdIO

Bouncy bouncy bouncy

9ND79

That would be the special effects department, usually requires some journeyman trade certificate, some of the most brilliant fabricators, welders and machinists can be found within said department.

oagc

i just shake stuff, okay?

Least_or_Greatest1

When they said filming a train scene I expected at least two dudes and one chick…

masonmax100

Tf is this music with the video lol

Noffensexpected

He’s the log guy for a reason.

Valestrazia

FUCK YOU! HAAAARUUUUYOOOO

Cardborg

Always the ♂️ right version ♂️

bigchatswithbigali

anyone know what the tune is? I kinda like it

b1kbishop

Song is called haruyo koi

571e_1115

Me: I worked in filmmaking. They: Wow! What was your contribution? Me: The train log bouncing guy.

Obstacle616

I want to see how this is worded in a CV Aug 20 - Dec 20: Executive manager of transport simulation activities.

blkdiamondskier

Nah, you got to describe achievements not roles: "deployed innovative special effects techniques, reducing production costs 372% from traditional methods."

just2quixotic

I thought they called him a grip

9ND79

Usually special effects takes care of pmp work such as rocking a train or other vehicles.

[deleted]

They rather want to know what you have experience in or what you achieved?

ZroFckGvn

Team work makes the dream work

daz1987

Easy money.

dorian_white1

You have got to dress it up. Assistant set mechanics advisor.

Mr_onion_fella

My mate worked on the movie Brooklyn. In the boat scenes he told me they had to rock the boat something similar to this. I just couldn’t stop laughing watching it knowing he was there rocking the boat.

MrBuffaluffagus

Well now Polar Express has been ruined for me.

Randall-Flagg22

WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE INTERESTING IF THEY SHOWED WHAT THE FILM LOOKED LIKE

tylersky100

Why are you SHOUTING? lmao.

LucyRiversinker

Train noise. Choo choo.

SuperMalarioBros

Hotdogbrain

I wonder if this is how they did super 8

trendz19

There is so much that goes behind the scenes in making those exact scenes happen! Brilliant

Former_Balance8473

I filmed a music video set on a train once, and this is exactly the way it went.

The_Observatory_

Did you get the opportunity to bounce on the log?

-Rens

*Plank

The_Observatory_

Listed as Plank Grip in the credits

Kellerhouse

Was it "Spotlight" by Jessie Ware? That's what I thought this clip was from at first but I don't think the lights were that fast, and I don't think the train bounced.

Fanculo_Cazzo

I always loved talking to the FX guys. They are masters in the low-tech, ingenious methods of making shit happen. On one show there was someone opening fire on us in a scene, and all these dust puffs pop around our feet. I run up to the dude after and say "how the hell did you do that?" and he shows me the paintball gun loaded with dust balls. The sounds of gunfire is all added in post anyway, but it was wonderfully low-tech and worked great. On another show I asked the FX guy (Frank Pope, I think his name was) how he made the campfires smolder and smoke for so long, and he showed me charcoal briquettes he had dipped in mineral oil. Regular ones for the fire, a couple of oil-soaked ones for the smoke. Brilliant.

scooterbus

Ive said it for years but the real artists on a movie set are the rank and file crew. SPFX, Construction, Scenic, Props, Electric, Grip, etc. Its amazing what some of these folks come up with to make something innocuous look so real.

Fanculo_Cazzo

Speaking of which, if you haven't seen [Light & Magic](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt19896784/), you really need to. It's a mix between documentary and love letter to ILM.

svenjamminbutton

“Uh, Sir, why don't you just use real cows?” “Cows don't look like cows on film. You gotta use horses.” “What do you do if you want something that looks like a horse?” “Ehh, usually we just tape a bunch of cats together.”

watehno

Show the results, damn.

Plasticious

This is literally how trains work in Russia.

RealJonathanBronco

Wow this is a boring scene. It's just a bunch of guys with mirrors and other guy with a wildly unbalance seesaw.

Salt_Response540

Looks like more effort than just running a train

Searchingforgoodnews

I wish I could see the results

groopy1

I’m surprised that guy can make the train bounce. Is this a fake train?

bee-sting

It has suspension, and that suspension is to smooth out tiny bumps in the track. So yeah I'm pretty sure a guy standing on a lever can replicate a tiny track bump.

groopy1

Obviously the suspension is necessary when actually moving at a good speed. Something on this train has been modified is all I’m saying

Kataphractoi_

nah just find a good wedge spot on the suspension and go ham once you find resonance

yadadsbrother

Ahhhhh…….Call me dull but, why not just film on a normal scheduled train? Like the 6:15 to bondi, cld get a lot of handy incidental footage as well 🤔

[deleted]

Sound, light and air flow are not carefully controlled in a regular train car for good audio capture, camera work and keep their hair nice and well coiffed and also keep balance.

marwinpk

Also you can retake any scene many times, you have consistent lighting and you are not in a need to put all day to shoot a couple short scenes if your movie just have a couple minutes happening on the train.

Illustrious_Crab1060

I thought everything on film was folley and voiced over, another time I'm wrong

Alesi42

I'm no expert but renting a whole wagon is expensive and the biggest advantage of a set is you can control any detail. You'll need consistency while shooting.

anincompoop25

Also, the scenery outside the windows. An actual train changes direction relative to the sun, passes by different scenery, goes through tunnels etc. You have much less control over the lighting. Here you can see they taped diffusion screens over all the windows. They have complete control over the consistency and shape of light

workaholiker

Fake Wagon

Kittykatkvnt

His ass is legit what u on about?

gbobeck

A good number of movie and tv productions film train related scenes at the Illinois Railway Museum.

rde42

There was an episode of the original Mission Impossible where this was part of the plot.

Anut__

Thats actually ingenious

FoilHattiest

Honestly seems like it would be easier to just film it on an actual moving train.

Gundamu0079

What's the song called?
