I accidentally updated mine to 17 and it’s basically unusable. I wish I could go back to 16.

I would stay on 16. Your iPad only have 2 GB RAM and new stuff will be directed towards iPads with M.. processors.

I rely on a heavy program that uses power I need to use that app on my 6th gen iPad I will probably not update it to iOS 17 I will stay on 16, until that iPad becomes obsolete! I blocked all updates using TVOS profile!

Fabulinius

I do the same with our older iPads. They work perfectly without some iPadOS 17 features they never have had (or needed).

I use a ipad 6th gen 2018 on ios 17.0.2 and i haven’t noticed any performance issues or higher battery usage. I have the 32gb version and iOS takes 8.47gb and system data 5.08gb. The lock screen customization might stutter at first but then its smooth. Might be placebo effect but I think it runs smoother on iOS 17

I think the iPad 6 last update will be iOS 17, the iPad 5 from 2017 didn’t get iOS 17! So I think this will be last update it gets. I don’t think I will be updating my ipad 6 past iOS 16, because it works great!

Droidenwarrior

If the 6th gen 2018 has the iOS 17 update how long will the pro 2018 be supported

Extreme-Tap9543

The 5th gen iPad 2017 does not have iOS 17 support so I think it will get dropped next year iPad 6 last update will be iOS 17 I don’t think it will get iOS 18!

I haven't noticed any general performance, stuttering, or battery issues with iPadOS 17 vs 16 on my 6th gen iPad (iPad7,5 - 128 GB), though I can't say that I run anything that pushes it too hard. Mostly web browsing, Zoom, MS Office including Teams, and a magazine reader. When I run Office, I use a third party Bluetooth keyboard. If you are running into stuttering or other performance issues, check your available storage and your battery health. If your local storage is nearly full, or if your battery capacity is getting low, you definitely can run into issues. (FWIW, coconutBattery says my iPad's battery is at 90% of original factory capacity.) If iPadOS 18 supports it, I probably will upgrade. However, since September 2024 will mark five years since Apple stopped selling the 6th Gen iPad, I would not be surprised if Apple drops support for it in iPadOS 18.
