I’ve had a mini and a standard size. I had some extra money at work so I got a big one and it’s great for drawing and consuming, but too big to type on. You almost have to get a keyboard unless you have giant hands.
I’d get the standard size if I could do it over.
No way it’s straight up macOS, but I’d settle for a macOS app where it mostly turns off touch and requires keyboard and mouse.
Feels like they could do this at any time but choose not to.
Well yeah lol why limit purchases to just an ipad when you could force the purchase of an ipad AND a macbook? This is the most greedy tech company in the world, I would be extremely surprised if macOS ever made it to ipads. It'd be awesome, but I doubt it.
Not likely. The expected screen on time of the iPad battery has been roughly 8-10 hours since the first gen iPad. It is what they aim for. And every year, battery tech gets a little better, and iPads get a little smaller, so the two things offset. And they can’t use a bigger battery, because people complain about weight, and the battery is the heaviest component. So, until there is a huge breakthrough in battery tech, 8-10 hours is what we get.
That isn’t a problem, that is by design. The "8-10" number is based on optimal conditions, of which using your device at max brightness is not. Do you have a phone? How long can your phone go with max brightness turned up? Max brightness is a battery drainer on all devices.
Ipads have no practical and significant improvements anymore. You know why? Bc of the damn OS. That is the Achilles heel of the whole gadget and apple things in general, and as long as it has it, you won’t be able to really take the full advantage of an ipad.
I still don’t think we’re getting macOS on the iPad. All I’m expecting is new hardware to distract people from the software limitations of iPadOS. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Does this mean we can expect a cost reduction on IPad Air M1 stock?
The ‘22 iPad non air is £379 in the uk, the air is £599/649.
Whilst the Air is nicer to use / look at that is a hell of a cost differential.
Hence waiting/hoping/praying for an Air reduction.
Am I being naively optimistic?
My husband picked one up for $400 at Best Buy on a flash sale 2 weeks ago. I’m sure we will see more of those sales but I would not hesitate if that’s the one you want and you see it that low.
The new hardware will cost more.
The software is where the biggest marginal gains are to be had in all discussions of the iPad (at least until on-board AI releases).
>Meanwhile, [there have been hints](https://www.techradar.com/tablets/ipad-pro/ios-174-hints-that-apple-might-finally-put-a-landscape-face-id-camera-on-an-ipad-pro) that Apple will solve one of our biggest iPad bugbears and move the front-facing camera to the landscape edge of the Pro, [as it did](https://www.engadget.com/apple-ipad-10th-generation-review-160014897.html) with the entry-level iPad in late 2022. That means the camera will be more optimally placed for those who use a Magic Keyboard or folks who simply prefer a landscape orientation.
I use my iPad in portrait mode 85% of the time during normal use, and 100% of the time in FaceTime. I don’t know that I’ve ever used my camera and my Magic Keyboard at the same time.
Obviously you’re in the minority. A lot of people complain about current camera placement, and apple obviously can see usage statistics so this decision was probably based on the data telling them that indeed most people use their iPads horizontally when using the camera.
Could be, but what other people do doesn’t affect my usage. Even when my iPad is in landscape orientation, that’s most often on a stand because I’m watching a video. The Magic Keyboard is an “only when needed” accessory for me. I put it on when I need to type something more than a couple sentences (like this reply), then take it off when I’m done. The fact that it’s so effortless to do that is why I chose the Magic Keyboard over models from different brands.
Ok cool, but as a mass produced product the iPad will be designed according to the demands and usage of the masses, which is why the camera is being moved.
You are a minority case. I use my iPad in landscape mode 99.9% of time and I use it for work for probably 80% of its use as my zoom meeting camera split screen taking notes.
This is not correct. There’s a reason the camera is at the top in portrait orientation. There’s a reason the Home button is on the bottom and the power button is on the top in portrait orientation. There’s a reason all the text on the back is in portrait orientation. There’s a reason the logo on every case is in portrait orientation. There’s a reason you weren’t able to have a separate customizaton for the screen in landscape view for the first 12 years. It’s a portrait orientation device that you only turn to landscape when you have a specific need.
>There’s a reason you weren’t able to have a separate customizaton for the screen in landscape view for the first 12 years.
Well, this one here is certainly a matter of perspective.
Even so, iPad was made for vertical. But I’m also one who loves the old design with the Home Button because I’m a classic and everyone hates that but whatever.
How can you say the iPad was made for verticals when all cases and most apps are designed for horizontal use. What app do you use that is for vertical?
>How can you say the iPad was made for verticals
* The camera is at the top, not on the side.
* The volume buttons are on the side, not on the top.
* The Apple logo and word “iPad” on the back are in vertical orientation.
* The brand logo on every case that doesn’t have a keyboard is in vertical orientation.
* The charger is bottom center just like the phone.
* They are in vertical orientation in most places on Apple’s website.
* They are in vertical orientation in the Apple stores
* The physical measurements in the device specifications are 11” tall and 8” wide, not 11” wide and 8” tall.
>when all cases and most apps are designed for horizontal use.
The only cases designed for horizontal use are ones with keyboards attached. All other cases are in portrait orientation.
>What app do you use that is for vertical?
All music apps. All reading apps. All banking apps. All social media apps. Reminders. Safari. Photos. Weather. Reddit. I use Pages, Numbers, Notes in horizontal orientation when I’m typing with a keyboard attached, but invertical orientation when I’m reading something that I’ve already typed. The only apps that I always use in horizontal orientation are AppleTV, Max, Hulu, and other video streaming apps.
reading or annotating pdfs or books or websites. Very common. We mostly use our phone in vertical just like the oversized iPhone aka the iPad
Id use vertical even more on my iPad if we can split screen in portrait mode so I can have. Source video on top while reading or writing notes at the bottom. It’s so stupid why Apple doesn’t allow this while android tablets have it
I use most of my apps in vertical position. Some are not even possible to turn but most I prefer the other way. Games and a couple other apps here and there I have to use in horizontal and if I want my iPad propped up then I do have to do horizontal, but otherwise, if I’m honing my iPad, vertical. u/0000GKP made all the points I was going to but yesterday I was very busy and didn’t find time to respond right away.
What does kodi on an iPad get you? I was a hard core kodi user dating to the original XBMC on modded Xboxes - loved it as a tinkerer, last device I used it on was a shield pro and damn was it ever annoying having to update all the time and fix broken links/skins. I now use IPTV and have never had to tinker again and can view on iPad, phone, ATV in 4K with tracking.
Procreate is an iOS-exclusive app that’s older than a decade and has a loyal fan base. Apple developing their own would be a waste of resources for them AND would leave a bad public impression of them as Procreate is already one of the big reasons to get an iPad over an Android tablet if you’re a creative.
Procreate was one of the huge selling points for me getting an iPad again, over an android tablet or a surface tablet. I had procreate before, and missed it. I never realize how much I enjoyed the app until I didn't have it anymore.
I just got an iPad again at the beginning of April and it's been so nice.
New iPads
Big if true
Delayed until June
wait what?
WHAT? IMPOSSIBLE! Why would they release new ipads in an event meant to be for ipad??
Kinda looks like it's meant for digital artists or the "new pencil"
artists are a very niche market for apple
And this event is targeted towards that group. If the logo and the phrase "let loose" is not a big giveaway, nothing i can say will tell you otherwise
I think you’re being sarcastic
Looks like not everyone gets it
We all are acoustic so it’s hard for us to understand it
I just want an iPad mini pro, is that so much to ask?
it will come but it will be even more expensive than the 13" iPad pro OLED. It will be call iPhone fold.
I know it’s an unpopular opinion but the moment they announce that imma let big daddy Timmy ravish me and my wallet for the thing
get $1999 ready
My wallets spread eagle for it
Is this really that unpopular? I too am going to let daddy Timmy ravish you.
I’ve definitely been downvoted for the idea on r/apple but I think people are slowly starting to come around to the idea
Same. Would be soooo sick to have a foldable iPad mini.
That’s just 2 iPhones with a hinge.
Screw that, I want two 8“ iPad minis on a hinge and be able to make it a ~12“ one.
I’ve had a mini and a standard size. I had some extra money at work so I got a big one and it’s great for drawing and consuming, but too big to type on. You almost have to get a keyboard unless you have giant hands. I’d get the standard size if I could do it over.
Can't you do the split keyboard?
Good suggestion, I’m not sure I’ve tried it. Cheers.
Strangely it isn’t supported on the 12.9
Man I hate ipadOS limitations
iPad mini pro and an iPhone pro mini is literally my dream iOS setup
Same friend same. It doesn’t even really need to be Pro in terms of specs. I just want a proper OLED screen and Face ID.
Without the pro price tag
1 years ago : “ i just want a iphone14 mini pro , is that so much to ask?”
And with rounded edges so its nicer to hold. Please is it too hard to make rounded corners
Do you mean edges instead of corners?
Yes edges!
Ahh yeah my iphone 11 pro was nicer to hold for extended periods of time compared to my 15 pro, I can imagine it's much worse on a heavier ipad.
Its horrible
Mac OS, 512gb/16gb ram, M3 Max , Usb-c thunderbolt 5, anti-glare screen, starting at $499.
Outrageous. I won’t pay a penny more than $449. And throw in a Magic Keyboard for getting me so riled up.
Hopefully better battery life. That’s all I want.
I don't think battery tech is improving. The hardware is getting more energy efficient.
Problem is, actual usage time is reducing. My M1 air is lucky to get 4 hours use with full brightness. Same for the one I had before that.
That isn’t a problem, that is by design. The "8-10" number is based on optimal conditions, of which using your device at max brightness is not. Do you have a phone? How long can your phone go with max brightness turned up? Max brightness is a battery drainer on all devices.

2018 m1 ipad owners have the godman most futureproof purchase
Thinking about this makes me feel glad I didn’t sell mine’s time ago
I hate to be that guy but m1 ipads came in 2021, although not blaming you, the ipad pro is basically the same since 2018 lmao
apologies then ! i forget the difference of speed considering they both seem alike to normal user !
I’m holding my M1 iPad Pro for eternity lol. Maybe someday this blasted OS will get an overhaul so I can do actual work without Remote Desktop.
I want OLED, new camera placement and not huge price increase.
I still don’t think we’re getting macOS on the iPad. All I’m expecting is new hardware to distract people from the software limitations of iPadOS. Hopefully I’m wrong.
i sleep. with my m1 pro and my mini

I seen the Air 5 go as low as $399.99 at BJs/Costco type of stores. $449.99 at other stores. I don't think it'll get much lower than those prices.
My husband picked one up for $400 at Best Buy on a flash sale 2 weeks ago. I’m sure we will see more of those sales but I would not hesitate if that’s the one you want and you see it that low.
Hosted by Loosey Laduca. 🤞
I SAID LET LOOSE!!!!!!!
Will there be a new mini?
I hope so. I’ve been holding off on a mini for a long time now in hopes of a new one.
The current model isn't bad tho
It’s not, but it’s almost 3 years old at this point, so if I’m going to spend the money, I’d like to buy the latest and greatest.
True.
The new hardware will cost more. The software is where the biggest marginal gains are to be had in all discussions of the iPad (at least until on-board AI releases).
Based on the image: Pencil 2 support for all iPads.
higher prices
Hopefully always on display? It’s never been in leaks but if OLED and promotion is there I see the possibility
Finally! So i can buy older models in lower price
Will they drop the price of previous iPads? I'm planning to buy an iPad air 5th Gen or iPad 10th Gen.

I think people using an iPad for work instead of a full size computer are the minority case.
Students need to take notes on a pad and have a MacBook and have a iPhone and have the tilting stand and accessory keyboard.
Work or personal, doesn’t matter, the primary use is in landscape and it’s not even close.
This is not correct. There’s a reason the camera is at the top in portrait orientation. There’s a reason the Home button is on the bottom and the power button is on the top in portrait orientation. I strongly dislike the horizontal camera placement, it’s so wrong to me. I’ll never like it.
Well you need to think of the iPad as a landscape device as a majority of people use it in.
Even so, iPad was made for vertical. But I’m also one who loves the old design with the Home Button because I’m a classic and everyone hates that but whatever.

Ya just made my response so much sooner than I had time to.

Yup, I annotate my PDFs and read in vertical. And I do a lot of both since I can only read on my iPads with my bad vision.
I use most of my apps in vertical position. Some are not even possible to turn but most I prefer the other way. I’ll do you one better, I’ve never used the camera on my iPad even once for anything haha
I’ve had an iPad since 2017 and have never used the rear camera. I do FaceTime with family though.
What’s the expected price for the 11 inch air?
Usually for these announcement events, when is the release date of the new Apple products?
Xcode support????
Can't come soon enough. I've been down to my kitchen iPad Air 2 ever since my 2020 Air died.
Reddit: “hi everyone, i’m getting my friend the iPad M2 on May 6th. Any thoughts?”
New pad same as the old pad
Mini update please Tim Apple!
What changes are planned for the pencil?
M4 chip
M7 chip likely
Just give me an iPad I can use Kodi on you twats.

I bought an iPad Pro and I’ve never used it
It can be a complete laptop replacement, perfect for traveling and on the couch and I remote desktop into my Mac mini via Jump if needed
I want new airpods pro. Help
It looks like they planning their own integrated procreate type app
Procreate is an iOS-exclusive app that’s older than a decade and has a loyal fan base. Apple developing their own would be a waste of resources for them AND would leave a bad public impression of them as Procreate is already one of the big reasons to get an iPad over an Android tablet if you’re a creative.

I'm literally buying an ipad just for procreate lol
Like all stock Apple apps, they suck on purpose so you can buy 3rd party apps that are better and so Apple can take a 30% cut
