Sorry *your* ipad is a buggy mess, but I also don't have any of these problems.

Xirtameth

iPad user since the first one. I’m working with an iPad Pro 12,9’ first gen at the moment. Using the files app everyday with none of the issues you are describing. Try resetting the iPad and reinstalling everything. If it’s not fixed you might have a hardware problem(memory?).

bidhopper

Using the same 1st gen iPad Pro with no issues. Course we’re struck on iPadOS 16.7.7. Mainly use Dropbox and other than a lag in syncing between desktop and iPad everything works like it should.

char_limit_reached

I’ve had literally none of these issues.

ItsColorNotColour

You know what you experience is not representative of what others experience, right?

thestrawbarian

They’re just stating that it’s not a universal problem. I also haven’t dealt with any of these issues. This just means that OP having these issues is also not representative of what others experience. It’s called having a discussion.

char_limit_reached

My point exactly.

IcyIceGuardian

You know that OP’s experience isn’t representative of others experience, right? Stupid fucking argument, it applies to everyone

taha_simsek

Worst part is most bugs aren’t universal, and it seems like it just randomly happens on some people and doesn’t on others. But since it’s a closed OS there is really nothing you can do to troubleshoot unlike on Windows for example. Which means you just have to live with a seemingly niche bug without being able to do anything about it and hope Apple actually fixes it, most of the time bugs won’t even get acknowledged.

anton966

Very true, for example, I have my light and sound cursor in the control centre disappearing from time to time. I was kind of surprised to not see it mentioned here. As it is a pure view/displaying thing, I thought it would be very generic. I had this since iPad os 16 and it never got resolved.

sparksdls

I haven't seen this crash issue at all, whether with local data, attached external storage, cloud, or SMB-accessed devices - M1 12.9, Mini 6.

National-Library9458

Yup, bugs are here and there. I'm too fed up .

ZeBuc3ta

I have been using iPad since iPad OS 15, and stability wise, iPad OS 17 and 18 have been the worse. The files app it’s unreliable at best, drawing in a big PDF or moving files repeatedly is a guaranteed crash. Sometimes the Keyboard randomly stops working and a have to restart the iPad. External monitor support still is underbaked. Try using Xcloud in a external monitor, you can crash the whole UI just by trying to make it go full screen. I think Apple tried to add to much this past iterations of iOS, both iPad and iPhone, and things haven’t been as polished as it used to be

Dirus

I had the same issue until recently and thought I just "didn't get it". The amount of times files and other things that uses file management fucking up was significant in the last week or two. So I backed up everything and reformatted it. Now it runs smooth, crossing my fingers it continues.

Series_X_Pro

I advise you to back up your ipad by just transferring all important files as well as gallery or whatever and hard reset your ipad and manually import all the files and important stuff you need again. Don't make a copy of your data for the whole ipad by using 3rd party apps or iTunes because there might be something wrong within the load of system stuff you back up. Just do it the long and safe way by only backing up as little stuff as possible then transferring the stuff back after setting it up as "new ipad/device" and 9 times out of 10 this solves most of the software issues.

242vuu

This typically fixes weird gremlins for me. Just set it up as a new device and spend 30 minutes getting it right.

Series_X_Pro

Yep that's right

CourseSuccessful6372

Seems like it could be your iPad

BarnacleBoi

The other day I was using a few different apps in Stage Manager and Numbers started glitching out (keyboard icons appearing and disappearing; I tried disconnecting the Magic Keyboard, but it persisted). I had to close Numbers and reopen the file and then it was fine for about 10 minutes before it started again. I don’t normally use the iPad in this way, but I’m traveling and decided to leave the MacBook at home.

DylanSpaceBean

The latest build of iOS fixes all the issues my iPhone has been having ever since iOS 17 released. Maybe the latest build for the iPad helps that too

Bobby-Lemon

I also find iPad os quit buggy. Connecting external monitor with stage manager is a complete mess. A lot of times everything crashes and "floating windows" disappear. I'm also annoyed that everything is locked down. APPLE GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER

Bumble072

This seems like a you problem. Or maybe a I did stuff I shouldn’t have done and I could have gotten away with it on Windows but not iOS kind of mistake.

Luna259

iOS 17 is as well iPadOS 17 has been the more stable and bug free of the two in my experience

21Shells

Strange, i’ve had some buggyness on the newest releases like on iPadOS 17.0 but overall has been consistently pretty bug free compared to Windows for me. Could be an issue with your specific iPad because I do the same things without encountering any bugs.

Alert-Reception6453

Are you on the latest version? Also try a DFU restore with Apple Configurator if you have a Mac or use iTunes if you use a PC(this will erase your iPad so make a backup first). I’m using an iPad Air 2 which is literally ancient and I’ve never experienced any of the issues regarding apps crashing and other stuff

SoulJahSon

Go Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra and never look back! I have an iPad Pro and the S9 Ultra and it blows the iPad away. Android is super functional and Dex mode is unreal! Sorry just saying.

jlharter

I’m of a mind that people saying that because they don’t have these issues there is somehow no issue at all, ever. Similarly, the unhelpful “wipe it and start over” or “call Apple” is absurd. There are almost certain bugs. I’ve been using my iPad more heavily lately and I find Files crashes whenever it has to download a file first. This happens when copying/moving files, either in iCloud or Dropbox, and whenever it has to download the file that was offloaded. I’m also learning some apps, like the Affinity apps and several of Adobe’s, do not work well at all when connected to an external monitor. There are bugs in these apps that seem hard to tell if they’re Apple’s fault or Serif’s or Adobe’s. For instance, Affinity Publisher has some kind of z-index bug on the menus when you create a new file then toggle to the margin/bleed options. Every time, full stop. I have no idea and so desperately wish someone could tell me why clicking a file to open it in QuickLook \_sometimes\_ puts a “Open in Photoshop” label in the top right, but most of the time it does nothing. How is it possible that when I click an obvious .psd it has no way to \_actually\_ open it? Every time I end up having to go to Photoshop and navigating for that file all over again, only for that import to fail, too. Which is probably a Photoshop issue, but the Files app can’t seem to figure out what to do with it, either. I still don’t understand how the Share Sheet menu of apps and options seems to be different almost every time I look at it. I don’t understand why the apps aren’t in alphabetical or some other logical order. Screenshotting on an iPad with a monitor connected results in the screenshots frequently not being saved nowhere, even when I just submit and say, “Add to photo roll”, which ought to be the safest place to handle. Yesterday I found my iPad unable to launch an on-screen keyboard. No button, no gestures to activate it, no ability to tap or Scribble with the Pencil. Just no input at all, which required a restart. Last week pulling down on the screen to launch Spotlight refused to do anything. It just faded the screen a little and stayed that way with no prompt. The number of times I restart my iPad lately when I use it all day every day is bordering on “old time Windows“ levels of restarting. I so desperately want one unified device in my life, and I wish it had pen support, so that means the iPad. But it’s always lagging. I know I’m pushing the boundaries here, but I think it’s fair if Apple says “what’s a computer?” and it can “replace your laptop”, then by gum it’d better be able to handle things like copying files.

mazeking

Getting downloads to work with other browsers than safari is a mess when it comes to the files app. Seems like many apps has its own storage container instead of using a common download folder in the Files App.

InternationalRush423

A tale as old as time…

Erakko

Are you sure that your iPads storage isnt broken? Files app surely does not crash that often. I have never seen it crash on my own use.

m0n0L1th1c

12.9" M1 iPad Pro. I use it with an Apple Magic Keyboard and also connected to my ultrawide display via a CalDigit T3+ dock. I've literally never had any of the issues OP has described. Is OP a paid agitator or rep of a competing company, posting misinformation?

Diormybodyyy

Bro, back everything up on a computer and reinstall iPadOS or call Apple. Stop acting like a child

Naevx

This is why I stick with macOS for the time being. iPadOS just ain’t ready. And it’s 100% artificial from Apple themselves.

m1_weaboo

iPadOS in general is the buggiest software from Apple imo

Bryanmsi89

Huh. I think Stage Manager is probably the worst possible design for iPad multitasking, but I wouldn't say iPadOS is 'buggy.' Its been fine for me across a number of ipads. Maybe you just need to wipe and start fresh?

DoubleOwl7777

the issues with the file system all stem from the fact that this was an afterthought, and not a part of the system like it is on android/windows/pretty much any other os.
