[Yes, we do](https://www.rorygallagherfestival.com/index.html)

Kyltemnestra

damnnn it looks incredible I really want to join now thanks for the info

Niexh

Go next year, it's great.

jumptouchfall

Kyltemnestra

I really like to get to know people who are fans of Rory. You guys are very chill and love the music .Its really good to see the people’s comments on this thread.Appreciate it!

jumptouchfall

honestly, i dont know your age but figure as you say youre on a student visa , im guessing early ish 20s. i swear bro, if ya like the tunes, get yourself over next year :) even if its on your own, ya will meet so many folk, from everywhere not just Ireland. its a super experience :) anyways, super a new person knows rory now :) keep spreading the word bro :)

Kyltemnestra

im 21! if i can figure out this visa(i think i can) will do it and share my experience in this subreddit.I listen different kinda of music mostly classical and blues, jazz. It's an incredible feeling to share the same feelings with people whose taste in music matches.

jumptouchfall

ah bro, love it :) whole life ahead of ya, endless possibilities for ya :) enjoy the the fuck outta it man :) if ya manage to get over for the festival next year or in future years dont worry about recording or shit, just enjoy the vibe, buzz (chat, be friendly , have fun) with everyone. every one is there for the good vibes and super musicians :) dont plan, just go :)

KenEarlysHonda50

Never been myself, but it would be a great crowd.

purplegreendave

It's so much fun. Highly recommend.

SnooblesIRL

I have brought friends from a good few countries in Europe to it, it's unlike any festival you can imagine. It's hardly even comparable to a smelly festival - book tickets and make a post when your going, the bais will definitely meet up with you

Kyltemnestra

Will do thanks

Kyltemnestra

Will do thanks

Financial_Change_183

It's a lot of fun, but it's less about the music, and more about people camping and getting drunk.

flim_flam_jim_jam

Some of the best musicians/guitarists from Ireland and beyond play at the festival, weather its on the streets, in bars, or big stages and vast majority of it is free. Its definitely more about the music then anything. Most festivals in Ireland are a complete rip off.

PaddySmallBalls

I go for the music. I don’t drink at it.

SeldomSleeper

i’ve been every year since i could walk as it takes place in my hometown. Highly recommend

BigDrummerGorilla

He’s fairly famous here. There’s a Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon. It’s his birth place.

Kyltemnestra

omg he also has his own statue in there!

FrugalVerbage

Yep. I drove through Ballyshannon last year. When I saw the statue I had to stop, wander the 2 streets, buy some lunch and a small present for someone. If it wasn't there I'd have kept driving and the town's merchants wouldn't have the €20 I spent.

NormanskillEire

Statue in Dublin, too.

Rodonite

Don't expect him to show up though, such a diva

D-Ghoul162

I met him in Stephen’s Green when I was 14. Me and my friends were randomly waving at people and he stopped to talk to us. He was very sweet and very handsome. He was telling us how he loved to play music and how we could do anything we wanted in life if we are passionate about it. We found him really down to earth and inspirational. Not everyone takes the time to talk to a bunch of kids. I never forgot him for it.

Kyltemnestra

It’s really special for me that you told your story in here. thanks for this beautiful memory.🙏

fullmetalfeminist

That's a brilliant story. Everyone always seems to speak so highly of Rory, like it seems like he was genuinely a decent lad who just wanted to play music, not someone who wanted to be famous above all else

Lonely_Eggplant_4990

He's buried a mile away from me.

TeletextPear

Where are you buried?

Lonely_Eggplant_4990

Down the road from Rory

Plane-Ad2328

😂😂😂

Decky86

Coincidentally on the weekend they held the festival 2023 I was standing at his grave. I'm from Donegal and my wife's from cork . Was visiting her grandparents graves near his. They have a lovely shrine to him there.

Meisce

Couple of plots over from my grandad.

2012NYCnyc

Where in Cork is this grave?

Meisce

St. Oliver’s. Ballincollig.

r0thar

Background-Ring9637

Rory is also well known / respected in Northern Ireland as he continued to play in Belfast throughout the troubles when no one else would come. There is an annual Rory Gallagher event as part of Belfast blues festival and there was a documentary about him on BBC ni last week if you have any way to access iPlayer.

ScaramouchScaramouch

I only saw him play once, at the RTC in Cork around '93. I only found out much later that it was the last gig he ever played in Ireland. He was brilliant.

Practical_Trash_6478

Rory was voted irelands greatest musical artist, and in 1972 was voted by melody maker as the no 1 guitarist

glennize

If you haven't already, I'd really recommend checking out his band 'Taste' from before he went solo.

xlogo65

https://www.ticketmaster.ie/band-of-friends-tickets/artist/1795885 Gerry McAvoy formed Band of friends in 2012. Gerry played with Rory Gallagher for 20 years. He has played on every record with Rory from 1971 to 1991. He also wrote his Biography “Riding shotgun” which was published in 2005. The band now consists of Brendan Oneill drums (Rory Gallagher 1981-1991 Paul Rose, guitar. Paul was chosen from 1000 guitarists by Rory in a Fender sponsored competition Jim Kirkpatrick grew up listening to Rory’s music

Kyltemnestra

thanks for the information.I'm checking out rn![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|thumbs_up)

unfixingdock

paul and jim are no longer in band of friends sadly because gerry stole close to or just over 5k from them by getting an advance on a record deal they did not telling them which is sad to see but ya, still great to check out rory on yt so many good videos

katsumodo47

Yeah the Rory Gallagher festival was on a few weeks ago in Ballyshannon. It's always a good time if your into classic rock. Brings thousands of people to the town

RabbitOld5783

Really good recent documentary about him on rte player I think you can watch it abroad even if not in Ireland. Think you can download the app

Snorefezzzz

Savage guitarist. See some tributes from visitors left beside his grave from time to time.

AdeptMongoloid

Unfortunately you just missed the Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon, but both there and in cork there'll be plenty of history about him and a lot of places playing his music.

MaelduinTamhlacht

BBC has this documentary - you have to be in the UK to watch it, but I gather there's some way to pretend you are; dunno what it is, though [https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00206t5/the-rory-gallagher-story](https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m00206t5/the-rory-gallagher-story) Here's another, also "unavailable to watch in your location" [https://www.primevideo.com/detail/Rory-Gallagher-Ghost-Blues---The-Story-Of-Rory-Gallagher/7I4HT41ZZZWI1K7MUL9W4SBM5V](https://www.primevideo.com/detail/Rory-Gallagher-Ghost-Blues---The-Story-Of-Rory-Gallagher/7I4HT41ZZZWI1K7MUL9W4SBM5V)

fullmetalfeminist

I realise the BBC paid for that with English people's money, but there's a special irony in not letting us watch it. Especially if they're still taking licence fees off people in NI and not letting them watch iPlayer

Tasty_epic

Really is a forgotten legend. Most people have never heard of him.

Kyltemnestra

definitely a national treasure

ColinCookie

Still considered a legend in Greece. Constantly have his music on the radio.

Tasty_epic

Amazing too when you think, ive never heard him on irish radio and yet he is played abroad.

SeldomSleeper

yep. the rory gallagher festival takes place annually in his birthplace Ballyshannon, co. Donegal

eatmyshorts21

He is incredibly famous, especially so in guitar circles.. some of the people who rate him as the best guitar player ever include Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Brian May… https://lifestyle.livemint.com/amp/how-to-lounge/art-culture/rory-gallagher-the-forgotten-guitar-god-111633084990406.html

No_Juggernaut4673

My first concert ever was Rory. Saw him live 3 times, in Belfast. Brilliant live performer. RIP gone too soon.

prettyvacantbutwise

Saw a great Rory tribute band in mcgings in Westport last night. Paddy Ward band ( iirc), used to be called fresh evidence. Check them out for Rory Gallagher music around the west.

mmciv

He is a legend. Ballshannon have an annual festival. He still has a very dedicated following. We have Dutch friends who come over most years for it. There is a new doc on BBC iPlayer that looks good.

Other-Implement-75

One of my favorite Rory songs, guitar solo will make you weep: https://youtu.be/T19sDvVoAvk?feature=shared

Kyltemnestra

Yep that’s the good one I love going to my hometown and Ghost Blues

Agitated_Vegetable25

Brian May and Eric Clapton both highly rated RG…Hendrix died in 1970 so I think the Hendrix quote that Rory was the best guitar in the world probably isn’t a true quote…but to many he was and still is an absolute legend

corkbai1234

Rory was well known before 1970. Taste were very well known on the festival circuit. So Jimi would have been aware who he was at least but hard to know about the quote. Rory also auditioned for the Rolling Stones but Ronnie Wood ultimately ended up joining instead of him.

The3rdbaboon

There's a whole fucking festival dedicated to him up in Donegal, I've never been but it looks good. Flights from Vienna probably not that expensive?

Kyltemnestra

i do not have citizenship in any EU country might need a visa also.I guess i can't enter with student visa since i have turkish [citizenship.flights](http://citizenship.flights) are not that expensive actually

tinglingoxbow

You'll need a separate visa since Ireland is not part of the Schengen zone. I don't think it's particularly expensive or hard to get for a Turkish person though, to come as a tourist.

Kyltemnestra

I will try my best to go [there.Im](http://there.Im) hoping that I will be able to go to Ireland.Since i have schengen it might be easier for me to get tourist visa maybe

Kyltemnestra

I will give it a shot

erouz

I'm not Irish but living here. It was my second year I had pleasure to spend weekend at Rory Gallagher festival and already can't wait for next year. Atmosphere in town is impossible to describe you have to live it. Mix of people from around the world makes it even better. Just book fly for next year tak tend and enjoy.

Kyltemnestra

Will do definitely

Electronic_Term6428

Yes , festival in ballyshannon donegal , June Bank Holiday weekend every year. This year was my 16th year attending. Loads of fans make the trip from europe

OkAge4185

He's a legend!

AulMoanBag

He's so good we made two of them.

Natural-Upstairs-681

The Rory Gallagher festival in ballyshannon is brilliant, I have been going to it since 2007

2012NYCnyc

The music library in the Cork city library is called after him https://www.corkcitylibraries.ie/en/locations/city-library/rory-gallagher-music-library/

jumptouchfall

one of the few things r/ireland can agree on :) Rory Gallagher is class and so is the festival for him :)

BoruIsMyKing

"Walk on Hot Coals" is one of my favourite songs of all time...glad you've found Rory 🤘

IsolatedFrequency101

There is also a wonderful Turkish Rory Gallagher tribute band called Cork, led by the great Ali Altman https://www.facebook.com/share/v/zSs7UygQeEFyA7Hf/

MadeInBelfast

https://youtu.be/qvFoo4bVRJU?si=BouSZlA4MUSUBlNX the Rory Gallagher documentary...

finnlizzy

This looks like some sort of guerrilla marketing for Rory G fest. Hello, my name is Mr. Snrub, and I come from.... some place FAR away. I was wondering if there were some sort of festival celebrating Rory Gallagher. Preferably not in Cork, which is not actually his home town as is commonly believed, but somewhere in Donegal. And not in a field, as I would much prefer a whole town be filled with old hippies and townies on Buckfast and yokes.

finnlizzy

Was only taking the piss. You asked if there was a festival, and I used to go to it religiously every year (start of June which is when school/university breaks for the summer) before moving abroad. It's just up the road from me, and it's serious craic.

PapaSmurif

Yeah, get the feeling the town has tried to milk the 'birth place' thing for all it's worth.

Kyltemnestra

no guys im really a student in vienna and turkish i just sincerely wondered

finnlizzy

He's joking about the fact that Rory is from Cork, but actually he was born in Ballyshannon, and since Ballyshannon is a small wee town, they have an annual festival for the only famous person born there (he left when he was 1). It's a great festival and it's great for the town, but Rory had basically no connection to the town. He was only born there because his dad worked on building the dam.

Kyltemnestra

Damn missed the joke :(

corkbai1234

He only lived in Ballyshannon for a year before moving to Derry until he was 8. He then moved with his mother and brother to Cork. He regularly referred to Cork as his hometown. His birthplace was in Donegal but his hometown is Cork. Edit: Sorry didn't realise you were being sarcastic 🤣 Cork people are very possessive over Rory 🤣

Jaded_Variation9111

He had a nice place on the water in Kinsale https://preview.redd.it/wkrcdtuzza8d1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=969c86f2f948be5f4ac2ba7eb0b7c3324014f469 [https://www.independent.ie/life/home-garden/homes/rockers-retreat-legendary-guitarist-rory-gallaghers-former-home-in-kinsale-on-the-market-for-995000/41644820.html](https://www.independent.ie/life/home-garden/homes/rockers-retreat-legendary-guitarist-rory-gallaghers-former-home-in-kinsale-on-the-market-for-995000/41644820.html)

corkbai1234

Beautiful house

baboito5177

I lost all respect once I heard he was baiting his wife.

roenaid

You're getting people mixed up.

Lazy-Information8893

The gaa player is bating his wife, the prick....but Rory Gallagher, the legendary guitarist, was a lifelong bachelor.

KenEarlysHonda50

Fuck sake lad.

fartingbeagle

Oh lord, how embarrassing!

baboito5177

Ah lads I know.. I was just making a joke.

InfectedAztec

Most people wouldn't have got that and that's a bad rumour to start

baboito5177

Wept, the downVoting is real, I guess you're right, boss, tbf I would have thought there being only 2 famous Rory Gallaghers in existence and both from Ireland, and one being known for baiting his wife that most would have got the reference. On that note, I disagree that I'm starting any rumours cos those that know well... Know, and those that don't probably googled it and found out that there is two of them and the GAA one is a bastard.

MaelduinTamhlacht

Joke? Really? You find that funny?

baboito5177

What? What are you suggesting I find funny?

MaelduinTamhlacht

Wife-beating

baboito5177

Ah come on now, don't be acting the maggot, You honestly don't believe the "joke" is about DA, you absolutely couldn't. There are two people of note that have that name. One is a legendary musician, all round good guy the other a bastard. The joke was that in absolute contextual confidence of this being related to one, someone referencing the other. It's very telling that you want to Pearl clutch about this, I cannot see how anyone would joke about DA, it's abhorrent. And furthermore why your first assumption is that anyone would. Unless you are one of those can't wait to be offended at every turn types, and manufacture an offense of the highest order in everything they see.

MaelduinTamhlacht

"I lost all respect once I heard he was baiting his wife." That's the joke. Yeah, I think it's about domestic abuse. And the fact that you turn aggressive - talking about pearl-clutching - is not a good sign.

baboito5177

This is one of the weirdest interactions I've ever had on here. I actually can't believe you're doubling down on this. Literally been told by the author you are mistaken and n the intent of the statement and still pushing back. Genuinely, for a few moments there I thought you were a spoof account and you were having me on. I was actually going to reluctantly put up my hands and say fair dues, hook line and sinker, you got me... That was before I checked your previous comments and posts. It seems that's not the case, and the impression I'm getting is you do infact mean what you say, I could see a similar trend of commentary on your part trying to manufacture outrage in other things, I saw one post whereby you were accusing people having a conversation (that you weren't a part of, and were eavesdropping on) , of a form of classism, using coded language to denigrate the poor, by using the term "anti-social behaviour". Luckily for society the overwhelming response to that post inferred you were outraged at nothing. But what was really bizarre on a post about classism.. you did it while simultaneously outing them as being D4. And then did a damo and Ivor esq impression of their accents.... So you are obviously a very particular person with a very particular mind. Which is fine I suppose, each of us being entitled to our own opinions and that. I digress, look a chara, I'll save us both some time, let's stop engaging the other, we don't have any chance of middle ground here. So let's go and leave it that you think I'm a terrible person of the lowest, worst, most reprehensible, scummy moral character, and I think you're an attention seeking, wannabe SJW, hypocrite with a victim complex.... And we can enrich each others lives by never talking again! Agreed?
