I used to cycle to work years ago. Every morning I’d meet the same motorbike coming toward me and we’d exchange head nods. This went on for ages. Eventually my bicycle was upgraded to a 50cc scooter, the head nods and salutes got bigger and more elaborate. Then one day I applied, interviewed and got a job in, as coincidence would have it, the same factory he worked. We became best mates for years. Good times.

It's not about knowing the person, it's simply camaraderie based on shared experience with an uncommon vehicle. Motorcyclists do it too, and have special salutes like using one of their legs if they can't free up a hand. Landrover Defender drivers also do it, specifically the vintage ones. Probably classic cars generally. Etc.

In Australia in the 90s, a popular hatchback was the Ford Barina, which had an ad with the catchphrase "beep beep Barina" with people driving in Barinas beep beeping each other. This soon caught on in real life and you'd constantly see Barina owners giving the little beep beeps at other Barinas.

OceanOfAnother55

Yep, my dad drives a truck and they do this.

WickerMan111

Bentley drivers do it too.

WolfOfWexford

You mean the chauffeurs?

WickerMan111

I drive my own Bentley. I'm not that bad.

DarwintheDonkey

I was stopped at a bus stop in town last week and saw one driver beep and when the other driver looked up he gave him the finger…the other driver responded with the blowjob motion. Cute af.

AllezLesPrimrose

Tell us you’re not a culchie without telling us you’re not a culchie

vennxd

Fuckin townies, noticing our secrets. It's a disgrace Joe.

Thisisnotevenamane

I advised my driver to do a little wave every time we pass another Rolls Royce.

railer201

No fear of sustaining a repetitive strain injury with that one !

Lil_Fridget

I get similar from fellow 8th gen Civic drivers, all united behind the same goal of 400km on the odometer.

Dazzling_Detective79

I always thought it was interesting when they dont acknowledge one another, like whats the tea gurl

It's more common between drivers in the same garage, less so if they are from different garages. You always get one scorpy cunt though who won't acknowledge you.  They also have a unspoken rule of different tables for different garages in the canteen.

TheRealPaj

Bikers do it too.

MammothAd8886

People on motorbikes give a little low hand wave as we pass each other…a general acknowledgment of a fellow traveler. Not an answer, but there you go

Archamasse

Ha, I never paid much remarks to them doing this, but now you point it out, it's very sweet, yes.

thats_pure_cat_hai

As others have said, camaraderie but yes it is nice, I like it.

RJMC5696

I think it’s so cute and wholesome

Aggravating-Fun7486

Motorcyclists do the ‘nod’

TheRealPaj

Or the leg.

RubDue9412

Everyone salutes everyone in rural Ireland wheather we know eachother or not, its probably just an extension of that. If we meet someone on the road after passing a garda checkpoint or speed camra we flash our lights at the drivers coming the opposite direction.

TheRealPaj

I don't. If someone is driving like an idiot, let them get caught - better that, than they slow down for a minute, then mow down a kid or something.

micar11

Beats doing a blow job motion that I saw a bus driver doing while passing another bus driver when I was in Japan.

LomaSpeedling

Begun the bus wars have.

SitDownKawada

I always thought that when they slow down and have a quick word to each other that it's like when two dogs meet and start sniffing each other

chortlingabacus

What is the gesture? how does a little light come into it?

Acrobatic-Energy4644

I find many BE drivers so ignorant towards customers, a sure sign they hate their jobs. Why are their no toilets on their inter- city services?

PremiumTempus

I don’t think this comment section is the time or place to be complaining about BE drivers

Acrobatic-Energy4644

You work for BE.
